Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: michaelr Date: 21 Sep 05 - 09:02 PM Letty -- what sort of activities do you propose for this weekend, and where do you see them taking place? I'd love to see Cork again, and to meet Catters, but it's all a bit vague so far... Slan, Michael |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 22 Sep 05 - 04:22 AM Advice for newcomers (same procedure as every year): Date is NOT negotiable! This is called tradition :-) [Excerpt from the opening post] So if there are several events on the same weekend (such is life, very very hard) it is for you to choose. If you like it small, homely and familiar with a lot of music and laughter: come to us. If you prefer the bigger events: go there (or enhance your saintly accomplishment of bilocation). Tertium non datur [third alternative not given]. Come, sing and enjoy! |

Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 22 Sep 05 - 05:22 AM The reason the programme's still vague is because it is still 8 months away! MichaelR: there won't be a festival programme as such. What mainly happens on these Eurogatherings (the 6th so far!) is that we gather for a big session, usually have dinner somewhere, have another session, sometimes go sightseeing (although it is up to the individual whether he/she wants a tour/boat trip, etc.), go to bed far too late, have breakfast, then another session. It's all very informal; a gathering of people who happen to like folk. Things that have been done on previous gatherings:
At this point, I'm not sure yet what pub will be victimised, or if people want a city tour (Cork is not extremely pretty, but has a lot of history), or if we're all going to Blarney to kiss the stone (French kissing not appreciated), or... One thing that is indeed still running is the Cork Singers' Club in the Spailpin on Sunday nights, so people can also go their own way. If the prices are reasonable, I may book the top floor of the Spailpin for the big session on Saturday night. Another pub that may be sympathetic to us is the Abbey Tavern, I'll enquire there as well. If the numbers aren't too high, we may visit another session on Sunday (though I'd be loathe to 'invade') in the Phoenix or Charlie's. The session I play in is on Friday in the Grange Bar, which is out of the centre and therefore not my first choice, but we'll see! There should be plenty of opportunity to get a venue. Letty |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Susanne (skw) Date: 22 Sep 05 - 04:58 PM I'd like to see Michael Collins' birthplace, please! As well as the Cobh of Cork and anything else worth seeing. Guided tours are an essential part of the Mudgatherings - there's nothing to make you learn more about your fellow Mudcatters ... |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 22 Sep 05 - 05:07 PM Michael Collins was born in Clonakilty, which is about an hour from Cork. Cobh is an old harbour town, last place visited by the Titanic before she sank. Both are outside the city! We may have to rent a bus ;-) It definitely is worth getting out of Cork, as the coast is very pretty. West Cork deserves at least a week. Letty |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 22 Sep 05 - 05:12 PM Are people interested in a tour of the Beamish brewery? This has to be applied for in advance, so I'd have to know whether people want to come. Alternatively, the Jameson distillery in Midleton is interesting too, and open every day. |

Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 29 Sep 05 - 04:01 AM And now what the chimneysweep told me this week: The chimney of my old house is in bad condition and has to be repaired (partly torn down and brought up again) next week and equipped with new stand and steps before the chimneysweep might fall down. Reading the calculation I nearly lost my hair. My meagre savings for Cork will literally go up the chimney, and I'm almost sure I won't make it next year. So sad to to miss a demonstration of The Fiddler's Progress, by Letty Bunyan. |

And if Skarpi takes this to Iceland in 2007, I might try and bring it to Denmark in 2008. Just so you're warned. ;) |

The out of town one looks nice, but a bit far from the action, especially as there is a slight chance I might indulge in a 'drop o' the craythur' making pedestrian progress proscribed. Or could we fit Greg's Aerophone with wheels? Giok |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 04 Oct 05 - 05:22 AM John: I've heard bad stories about hygiene in the city camping, but having your own motor home helps then. It is, unfortunately, the only one in town... Could you park the motor home in front of my house? I'm not sure what the Irish laws say about that, but I promise I won't give you away :-) Failing that, taxis will most definitely go to Togher and Blarney. From the city centre to Togher should cost about 7 euros, to Blarney probably more. Wilfried: Sorry to hear that, hope you can make it in the end! Letty |

Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Skipjack K8 Date: 09 Oct 05 - 07:55 AM You have missed nothing, Susanne, my darling. Tollesbury is my spiritual home in the Essex marshes that I am keeping up my sleeve for a year when noone else can be arsed to organise the Eurogather. I'm looking forward to my first visit to Munich in 2008. Never been to Bavaria before, and it's fairer on our founder, Wolfgang, not to have to drag his ass so far that far. |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Oct 05 - 08:17 AM Gutes bayerisches Bier welches gutes bayerisches Bier? Ist der der Grund, den Sie durch jedes zufällige Greg gehen möchten? Giok ☺ |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: MudGuard Date: 09 Oct 05 - 03:31 PM Greg, as Wolfgang lives in North Germany (Münster/Hannover), it is a far shorter travel for him to Kiel than it would be to Munich ==> 2008 Kiel Giok, no good beer in Bavaria, I agree! "Ist der der Grund, den Sie durch jedes zufällige Greg gehen möchten?" does not make any sense to me - could you give the English original of that sentence? |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Oct 05 - 05:26 PM It makes even less sense to me Andy, I'm only doing what BabelFish told me to do. I asked it to say "Could the good beer in Bavaria be why he wants to go there" or words a bit like that. Giok ☺ |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Susanne (skw) Date: 09 Oct 05 - 06:25 PM Okay, 2009 it is - and, by the way, Kiel has its very own brewery still going strong. As to the beer quality, people tell me it's quite drinkable. On the other hand, there hasn't been much in the way of sightseeing opportunities since Kiel was - to borrow a phrase from Harvey Andrews - redeveloped by the British in the early 1940s. However, Icould perhaps arrange a boat trip on the world-famous Kiel Canal, aka Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, with on-board session, perhaps? |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Skipjack K8 Date: 09 Oct 05 - 06:31 PM Kiel Canal!! You be Davies and I'll be Carruthers. That'll be brilliant, Iceland 2007, Munich 2008, Kiel 2009, Canterbury 2010! Sorted. |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Susanne (skw) Date: 09 Oct 05 - 07:00 PM Greg, is Davies the one without any sailing experience? That would be just up my street! Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Susanne (skw) Date: 12 Oct 05 - 08:02 PM Wolfgang, we're not quite as backwards as that any more! (Though I must admit I'd be hard pressed to name a place where both the session and beer AND the food are of good quality...) Giok, you're welcome! Wurst is definitely better here than in Scotland, and there are loads of parking spaces. |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Snuffy Date: 13 Oct 05 - 08:15 AM There were two breweries in Kiel (Holsten and Eiche) when I was there in 1967/68. Which one has closed? |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Susanne (skw) Date: 13 Oct 05 - 07:33 PM Both, Snuffy. Both areas have been turned into agreeable living quarters. But the 'Kloster-Brauerei' (Alter Markt) was reopened a few years back. It doubles as a pub, and you can even go downstairs and look at the cauldrons. I doubt they'd let us have a session there, though, and it's too loud to talk even without music. |

Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: GUEST,Greycap Date: 19 Oct 05 - 04:59 AM Just got back from a week in Cork. I selflessly worked quality assurance on Beamish & Murphy's stouts. The pints were beautifully kept and poured. All I had to do was drink 'em and ask for another. The city is impeccable and ready for us to visit. Car hire at the airport was 99 euros per week for a Corsa. Visted Macroom, Killarney, Skibbareen, Clonakity (De Barras Folk Club in the main street), Tralee, Bantry, Youghal & Kinsale. The South-West awaits you. |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 19 Oct 05 - 11:43 AM € 99 for a Corsa? Good grief! What will they demand then for a bicycle? € 57, for each wheel? |
