Subject: RE: BS: Cartoon Riots Spread to U.S. From: JohnInKansas Date: 22 Feb 06 - 03:14 PM Bill D - The onyuns wasn't a ref to the site, if that's how it struck you. While in Milwaukee I faced an angry mob one night when I announced the menu for an upcoming league party, and did not include RAW GROUND BEEF, with buns and onions. (It was a pistol league and they were armed.) They call them Cannibalburgers. Very popular, with beer and brandy boilermakers. The burgers ain't too bad, if you've had enough boilermakers. John |

Subject: RE: BS: Cartoon Riots Spread to U.S. From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Feb 06 - 05:57 PM Steak tartare, my ass. Nobody in Milwaukee eats anything with a French name. Boilermakers aren't too common in Milwaukee, either - usually, it's "a beer and a bump" - but it IS a Boilermaker if you float your shotglass of brandy in the beer. The "bump" is usually brandy, but can be any kind of schnapps. When I lived in Wisconsin, I learned that Wisconsin consumed as much brandy as the rest of the United States combined. And a cannibal sandwich is usually served on pumpernickel, with lots of onions and black pepper - and beer on the side, with or without the "bump." Ah, it brings back good memories. -Joe, who left Milwaukee in 1970 but constantly looks back- |

Subject: RE: BS: Cartoon Riots Spread to U.S. From: Bill D Date: 22 Feb 06 - 08:41 PM steak tartare is not a safe thing to eat in the USA anymore...too much E Coli about. I gather in some European countries it is still ok...but I wonder. (Nope, John, I didn't reply to YOUR Onyuns...I just noted the basic similarity to 'that other site' ..*grin*) |

Subject: RE: BS: Cartoon Riots Spread to U.S. From: bobad Date: 22 Feb 06 - 09:19 PM It can be rendered safe by gamma irradiation - a peaceful use of nuclear energy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cartoon Riots Spread to U.S. From: Bill D Date: 22 Feb 06 - 09:40 PM righto, then! I'll just slip my snack into my handy nuclear reactor what I keep next to the microwave.... (yes, yes...I know ☺....but buying it ready-zapped requires some serious looking, not to mention price. Eat purple-rare regular steak, and COOK that ground beef!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Cartoon Riots Spread to U.S. From: JohnInKansas Date: 23 Feb 06 - 06:56 PM The newest flap in my local rag is that some people are demanding an investigation on the use of carbon monoxide by meat packers. It seems it turns the meat "permanently pink." The CO is used in such small amounts that it's apparently not a significant(?) hazard, and nobody seems to be questioning the "as shipped" safety, but preventing the meat from exhibing the color changes normally associated with spoilage means you're probably unable to detect spoilage if it does occur.
