Stagolee - The Crime Report

The hangman put the mask on,
tied his hands behind his back
sprung the trap on Stagolee
but his neck refused to crack

Japanese graphic novels are being translated into English and published in the United States and Canada (post above by JWOB); some are very good.
Graphic novels are an important development in current art and literature.

I discovered, much to my to my amazement, that our local library branch actually has this particular graphic novel. So you see librairies are fonts of great discoveries and culture.

There's a similar one on Robert Johnson, called Me and the Devil Blues: The Unreal Life of Robert Johnson, Volume 1 by Akira Hiramoto. A fictionalized account of his life.

The modern graphic novel is a combination of visual art and text that has been crowned by a special Pulitizer Prize in 1992 and exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Art Spigelman won a special Pulitzer Prize for literature with his two-volume "Maus- A Survivor's Tale," and "In the Shadow of No Towers" was listed by the NY Times as a Notable book of 2004.

"Stagger Lee" by McCulloch and Hendrix has won prizes for its literary and artistic merit. No comic book, it presents both the history and the legend.

The New York Times has printed a full page review of the graphic novel, "Asterios Polyp," by David Mazzucchelli, certain to be one of the best books of the year (NT Times Book Review, July 26, 2009). This is the latest of the graphic non-fiction and fiction books to be reviewed by NY Times literary reviewers.

Graphic novel is just a politically correct term for comic book....

"Stagger Lee," 2003, Derek McCulloch and Sheppard Hendrix.

This prize-winning graphic novel was carefully researched. The images are very good. Copies available from several booksellers, $10.00-13.00 US.

I don't know much about graphic novels, but I've heard that they can be a real art form. There is a famous one about the Holocaust by a comics artist named Art Spiegelman which actually won a Pulitzer Prize. Personally, I think that a well-researched visual presentation of the legend could be quite interesting.

When I first read this post, I thought that "graphic" meant X rated sex & violence.

Then I clicked on the link you provided, and it seems that "graphic" as used for this book means presented with comic book type pictures & script written inside balloons.

I don't know if I'm relieved or disappointed.

****

graphic -definition #1
adj-clear, explicit

graphic- definition #2

In the June 2006 issue of Interview magazine, music critic Greil Marcus makes some glowing comments about a new graphic novel by Derek McCulloch and Shepherd Hendrix dealing with the legend of Stagger Lee and the music related to it.
