Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: beardedbruce Date: 26 Jun 06 - 09:13 AM Report on the radio was that we went from a 5 inch rain deficit to a 3/4 inch overage last might- and more expected today. Anyone have a supply of gopher wood? |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Amos Date: 26 Jun 06 - 09:22 AM I am sure this is Bush's fault. It has to be. Or Cheney, or one of them guys. I just can't figure out how... A |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Paul Burke Date: 26 Jun 06 - 09:25 AM The USA doesn't have cricket, Wimbledon or morris dancing. How come it ever rains there at all? |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: RangerSteve Date: 26 Jun 06 - 10:29 AM I'm on top of a hill and my yard is flooded. My lawn, which I mowed three days ago is already in need of mowing again. Everything in my house is damp and sticky. The weather report out of Philadelphia says three more definate days of rain and then three more possible days of rain after that. |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Bobert Date: 26 Jun 06 - 10:37 AM Amos, Maybe God's tryin' to flood Bush and Cheney outta town??? I would have thought a welll aimed lightnin' bolt would have done the trick myself but like they say, "God works in mysterious ways..." Jus' funnin' but... ... it's refreshin to have something bad happen that ain't got either of their grubby finger prints all over it... Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Donuel Date: 26 Jun 06 - 12:26 PM The rain has filled my wheel barrow to the top 3 times so far. Still Hurricaine Agnes was a lot worse than this current sprinkle. The IRS shut down today due to flooding as well as the National Arhives and other Federal buildings in DC. There was continuous lightning one night that was virtually surreal. If our HAARP weather controling technolgy was involved I would not be surprised. However I am not complaining, my corn is knee high already. |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Bill D Date: 26 Jun 06 - 12:57 PM Silver Spring MD...we had a music party last night in the downstairs rec room...a dozen happy people ignoring the thunder and singing....then someone noticed water running under her chair. Two hours later, and a LOT of help piling important stuff on top of unimportant stuff, and setting 4-5 fans and 2 dehumidifiers to work and we shrugged gave up.... (sang storm & water songs too, of course) I guess it rained 4-5 inches in 2 hours. 23 years here, and I never saw anything like it. I will have to toss the downstairs carpets...as soon as I can get enough stuff moved off them to drag them out...(they were old anyway...still) It's drizzling as I type |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: RangerSteve Date: 26 Jun 06 - 06:11 PM The humidity is actually setting off my upstairs smoke alarm. The sun came out this afternoon, so I decided to go out and run some errands, but the sun only lasted for about 10 minutes, then it started pouring again, and hasn't let up. Even the air is hard to breath, it's so humid. |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Gorgeous Gary Date: 26 Jun 06 - 09:32 PM It's lookin' like I might have to replace the carpet in part of my basement too. But then, the current carpet in that part is ugly anyway, so maybe there's a silver lining to be found in the clouds... -- Gary |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Bill D Date: 26 Jun 06 - 11:35 PM Now, if there was just more silver lining my pockets, I could get GOOD carpet, and deal with the leaks too! |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 27 Jun 06 - 04:25 AM Why not lay a vinyl floor (linoleum) and get rugs? It would be easier and cheaper to replace in the long term and less likely to smell when wet. We had a rainstorm in London last week that gave us 4 inches of water in 45 minutes. The localised flooding was due to the build up of leaves and garbage in the drains blocking them. The usual regular trickle of water that washes it away hadn't happened so everything backed up. Our cellar, which has flooded in the past, was still dry and safe. Hope it all dries out soon.... in the meantime, I've got an address here for gopher wood and a cubit measure... and don't forget to pack the shovels and extra dung beetles! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Ebbie Date: 27 Jun 06 - 10:10 AM Wow. I've never seen rain like that- '4 or 5 inches in 2 hours'. Can't even imagine it. I don't know what the equivalent would be here. Good luck, everybody. |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Bill D Date: 27 Jun 06 - 11:56 AM LtS...I am seriously considering a series of area rugs once things are dried out. The floor is already tiled and in decent shape. It would take a LOT of work and money to do carpets, and I hate the idea of dealing with this again in 10 years. The morning papers are full of stories of folks who had it much worse than we did.(along with the usual batch of idiots who drove INTO deep water and had to be rescued) |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Ebbie Date: 27 Jun 06 - 07:22 PM One of the scariest things about rain-saturated gtound is the threat of mudslides. Juneau is mountainous so every now and again a slide comes down a mountainside and obliterates everything in its path. The same thing happens with snow- when the new snow has not bonded with the 'old' snow. Historically there have been some horrendous snowslides here. |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: jeffp Date: 27 Jun 06 - 09:56 PM I saw in the paper today that a bunch of bachelor partiers had to be rescued from a site where I used to play as a kid. For you locals, Candy Cane Park in Rock Creek Park - accessible by fording the creek in those days, not sure about now. |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: RangerSteve Date: 28 Jun 06 - 08:12 PM The Delaware is flooding again, this time it's expected to be worse thatn the two floods of '05, which were pretty bad. Everyone's been evacuated along the river in NJ and PA as far south as Trenton and a few of the roads along the river are already flooded. Most of the bridges are closed. I'd be out there working double shifts keeping gawkers away under normal circumstances, answering stupid questions: Me: Sorry, but the road is under 10 feet of water. Stupid person: So, like, we can't drive our car down there?" and otherwise keeping people from killing themselves. I've come to grips with my dissability retirement, but now it seems like a blessing. |

Subject: RE: BS: We needed rain, but... From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jun 06 - 09:13 PM I remember working floods on the Mississippi (Upper River) when it was in flood. And I remember the damfools who wanted to drive in and "see the flood." With the levees shaking like jello when you walked on them, these people felt that of course it was safe! That's why we had roadblocks out, because it was safe and we only wanted to frustrate them! And then...six kids, and I mean about 12 to 14 years old, came up from BEHIND the roadblock. From the river side. And they started giving us a hard time. Turns out that they'd floated down a swollen creek in a metal concrete-mixing trough!! It was their "boat" and they had tied it up against the levee. We told them that we weren't going to let them use it, but they became QUITE belligerent. And then a civilian member of the Corps of Engineer strolled up and asked what the problem was. We told him, and the kids told him about their boat. He walked up to the bank and took a look. He told them what we had: they weren't going anywhere in it anymore. Belligerency! And he quietly pulled out a .357 Magnum, fired six rounds into the bottom, and sank it. Then he walked over to us and said, "I'll radio the police and their parents can come pick them up." He was carrying the revolver because people aren't the only things that are driven from their homes by a flood. Rattlesnakes, water moccasins, skunks, and other critters can be VERY annoyed by the loss of their dens and they have and will attack people. If you ARE in a flooded area please be careful of wildlife! |
