Subject: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 09:03 AM Have you seen, heard, or read about any witty, funny, thoughtful, or downright raunchy billboard signs? In addition to advertising billboards, churche marquees often have thoughtful, and witty signs that make use of play on words. Share your finds here, if you have a mind to! ;o) |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 09:04 AM Btw, before starting this thead I did a Mudcat Supersearch using the key words "billboard signs', funny billboard signs, witty billboard signs, and marquee messages". The first key words resulted in this link only: Detail.CFM?messages__Message_ID=1404167 All the other Mudcat searches resulted in no messages. I'm sure there must be other Mudcat messages on this topic, and perhaps there's previous threads. If so, I'd love to read them. If you know of any Mudcat threads or examples from other websites, and if the spirit moves you, please posts links to them here. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 09:06 AM A sign from a Pentacostal church marquee: "An open enemy is better than a false friend". |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Wesley S Date: 20 Jul 06 - 09:11 AM There was a church here in town that said "We preach from the King James translation of the bible - the one that God uses". |

Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: JohnInKansas Date: 20 Jul 06 - 10:29 AM I may have posted it elsewhere, but the butcher shop in South Haven Kansas, about 8 or 9 miles from the OK border on US81, has a marquee sign on the front of the shop with the ever popular: "NOBODY BEATS OUR MEAT" I've been meaning to get a "proof of" photo for years, but never seem to go through there in daylight. Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Jim Dixon Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:13 AM There's a bar in northeast Minneapolis called Mayslack's that is famous for its roast-beef sandwiches. For years they have used the slogan "Nobody beats Mayslack's meat." (See the crawling message on the web site.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Jim Dixon Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:16 AM Mayslack's also has T-shirts with the slogan. |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Wesley S Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:45 AM There is a BBQ place across from the Alamo that uses it too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Jul 06 - 12:00 PM Personally, I like travelling down I-75 between Cincy and Lexington where a huge sign invites you to Big Bone Lick State Park. The county to the north of us is Licking County and the Masonic Lodge there chose the unfortunate name of Licking Lodge. Probably some real interesting meetings there............... Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Bill D Date: 20 Jul 06 - 12:37 PM somewhere, I have a slide I personally took while heading south from Kansas City on the highway parallelling the Missouri border. There was a simple local business with the simple billboard above it..."69 Motel" |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 Jul 06 - 05:17 PM There's one near us in east London over a dry cleaners, dating from the 1930's... 'Don't beat your wife, let us do it'... LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Kaleea Date: 20 Jul 06 - 08:05 PM Bill, that's not the only 69 Motel. There's one in Oklahoma where I spent my honeymoon, many many moons ago. It was, of course, on Highway 69. Back then, one would occasionally come across some old Burma Shave signs. Some of them were funny. |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 08:37 PM Give Us Back/Our Burma Shave "Remember the one that went, HENRY THE EIGHTH / SURE HAD / TROUBLE / SHORT TERM WIVES / LONG TERM STUBBLE? And who could forget this one? CAUTIOUS RIDER / TO HER/RECKLESS DEAR / LET'S HAVE LESS BULL / AND LOST MORE STEER. If you were born before 1955, you grew up with Burma-Shave signs. Perhaps you never actually shaved with the stuff, but chances are good you cracked a smile as the red-and-white signs whizzed past on your family's vacation to the mountains or along your route to the nearest town... Whiskers, safe driving, and romantic humor continued as the hallmarks of the Burma-Shave ad campaigns, with road safety edging out as a favorite theme by the early 1940's. PAST / SCHOOLHOUSES / TAKE IT SLOW / LET THE LITTLE SHAVERS GROW / BURMA-SHAVE succinctly managed to deliver a public service message, delight carloads, and advertise simultaneously.... One study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania claimed that the Burma-Shave signs were a singularly successful means of slowing speeders. This 1955 series captures the unique ability of the ads to both gently admonish drivers and pitch their product in the final sign: SLOW DOWN, PA / SAKES ALIVE / MA MISSED SIGNS FOUR/ AND FIVE / BURMA SHAVE." |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 08:39 PM So...I'm not the only one who makes typos. Isn't that sentence supposed to read "LET'S HAVE LESS BULL / AND LOTS MORE STEER." ? |

Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: JohnInKansas Date: 20 Jul 06 - 10:37 PM As they're all phony, these might be called thread drift; but one never knows when one of these Scary Signs might pop up in front of you. [Note that there appear to be about 5 separate "series" at the site if you click the "related" button. Some of them seem to disappear if traffic gets heavy.] John |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:01 PM Bruce, when I clicked that last link you provided, the heading said "access prohibited" and there's a message from www.beautifulbritain.co.uk Am I the only one who has gotten that "access denied" message? **** JohninKansas, those signs were a hoot! What? They're phony? Naw, say it aint so. :o) |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Peace Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:03 PM It says, "If you are reading this sign, the pub is behind you." |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:19 PM Well, obviously we have two different computers. That's strange. I don't get that message at all from that link. And as for "If you are reading this sign, the pub is behind you.", I don't get it. I guess you have to have been there, or seen the visuals. What's the punch line? |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Peace Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:21 PM I would take that to mean that if one is drunk enough to be reading the sign, one is likely too drunk to know where the pub is. |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:26 PM Okay. I liked your earlier links in this thread better. And I still don't understand why my access is denied. |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:27 PM But it's not the end of the world if I don't get it or not. Hmmmm. I hasten to say that "it" doesn't mean "it". |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Peace Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:28 PM http://www.beautifulbritain.co.uk/images/OutAndAbout/sign_language/turn_round.jpg Try a google of that, Azizi. |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:35 PM That worked. Finally. Not that this is a contest or anything, but I still say I liked the other links you posted better particularly the first one. |

Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:48 PM Um, Bruce. Those last two links you provided didn't have anything to do with religion. Not that the last one said it did [have something to do with religion] but you sort of implied it by that caption. And while it's true that people's view of what religion can differ, I think you might want to change the captions on your links. Just a thought. Not a directive. |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:52 PM Amos. Thanks, I got it. But I have to say that I wasn't that impressed with it. "It" being that link. [Less anyone think that my mind is on anything else but these billboard or marquee signs]. |

Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Peace Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:58 PM Dang. OK. It's like this: Some folks say God made it all. Therefore, everything's religion. Anyway. I didn't know how to spell aethist, aethiest, etheist--well, anyway . . . . |
Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 06 - 11:59 PM Btw-those last couple of posts were called "Thread Drift" aka "going off topic". |
