Subject: BS: What would you do on the Holodeck?
From: Little Hawk
Date: 21 Aug 06 - 09:06 PM

On Star Trek Next Generation they had various episodes which involved the Holodeck....a simulation room where you could experience any alternative reality or situation you could imagine...with or without various forms of physically realistic effects. This proved very handy for creating some unusual storylines.

What would you choose to do on the Holodeck?

I'd recreate 1980's San Francisco, complete with the Bridge, Golden Gate Park, docks, Hospital, Marine Wildlife Park, etc...*G*

I wouldnt bother with any kind of 'mission' or plotline or whatever though, cos that would be crap....*G*

Ha! Ha! Ha! OOk! OOk! Not a bad scene ya got in mind, Catspaw! I can see it myself, in technicolor.

I would conjure up a nice piece of African jungle. Along comes none other than Tarzan, Lord of the Apes! Together he and I join forces to fight evil gomangani, evil tarmangani, and just plain managani after that. We clean out all the bad guys between Mombasa and Algiers. Lotsa gunfights too, and some lion-wrasslin' for Tarzan. While he's busy with the lions I go visit his treehouse and show Jane a couple of brand new moves she ain't seen before! OOk! OOk!

What WOULDN'T I do on the Holodeck? ;)

Well, if you'd asked me that in high school, I probably would've answered "Make out with Wesley Crusher, of course!"

I was a hopeless geek...but, I like to think, in a good way. There's something to be said for the fact that, when my friends and I wanted to have fun on a Saturday night, rather than get piss-drunk and expose ourselves to all kind of hazardous behavior, our idea of fun was a wedge of Brie, some Earl Grey (hot, just like Picard likes it!) and either some TNG or possibly a Ken'n'Emma flick like "Dead Again".

Anyway, to actually answer the question...I'd probably travel to all the places in the world I've always wanted to visit, or see again. I'd also love to "meet" my favorite fictional and historical characters.

And if I could sneak on late at ship's night when there was no one likely to interrupt, I'd also like to "meet" Ewan MacGregor. Spend some quality time, as it were. Maybe re-enact a few scenes from Moulin Rouge ("He's got a HUGE talent!!!")

OK, enough outta me.

I would make it Newport in 1964 with me on stage with Son House, or, Philadelphia, 1972, with me on stage with Tom Rush and David Bromberg.

Or, hang out in Washington Square Park with Dave van Ronk in 1960-61.

Dream on

Robo - there is no guarantee that 7 of 9 had sisters... being the Borg, they could have been almost anything... The only guarantee is that they would NOT be put together in the same way as 7 was!

I think I'd try Worf's battle training programme... with Worf as the prize.

(Yes, I'm weird.)

I just hope the Holodeck is waterproof so they can hose it down after you lot...

Given that the Holodeck is a finite size, I'd be interested to know what the people in there would look like to someone not involved. The Red Dwarf episode "Back to reality" springs to mind, where they think they're in a getaway car, and they're actually sat on four chairs in the control room.

There are really so many possibilities. I'd go for a night out with Winona Ryder, a re-enactment of the battle of Waterloo, a look at some dinosaurs, some Dylan concerts in 63-66, some early Baez concerts, an interview with Cleopatra...

It's a damn good thing holodecks do not really exist, because if they did people would totally lose touch with normal reality after awhile.

It would be worse than personal computers!

Well, now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars

A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

... from Bruce Springsteen's 57 channels (and nothing's on)

Lately I've been reading a couple of books by Michio Kaku (Beyond Einstein, Hyperspace, Parallel Worlds) and articles by Lisa Randall (both theoretical physicists). This leads me to an interesting bit of speculation.

It is conceivable that we are all living in a holodeck.

My husband and I went to Maui with 3 other couple in 1996 and stayed together in a science fiction writer's condo. (he was not with us - would that he was, he's a funny guy) The other couples were all related to science fiction, comics and film somehow and my husband and I were both the youngest people there. We were 30 and 32 and every one else was 40 or older. Well, there we were on tropical island of immense beauty for heavens sake and saturday night rolls around. What do they all want to do? Watch ST: Deep Space 9 and that godawful ST wannabee Babylon 5.

They all watched bad TV while my husand and I went on the Lanai and had Chi Chis (which is not to say we had sex - chi chis are a form of alcoholic libation involving pineapple juice I believe)

Well, not all that surprising. When people are around any place for awhile, no matter how great it is, they start taking things for granted and just don't notice them much anymore. Besides, those 2 shows only came on when they came on....the island is there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ;-)

Here is a puzzle: I heard Deana Troi (whatever her real name is, Marina Sirtis, I think) talk a few days ago, and it turns out that she has a lovely voice, British accent, and all. On Star Trek she talks like a rubber fish.

The curious thing about Star Trek: TNG is that the only person on the entire spaceship with any sexual charisma was Patrick Stewart (well, Whoopie Goldberg had her moments). Was this a deliberate plot, or some Romulan scheme (the decharismifier?)

Back to the question: eviscerating Wesley Crusher.

Peter T.

Patrick Stewart had plenty of sexual charisma. It's a commonly known fact. Whoopi Goldberg, as Peter says, had her moments here and there. Marina Sirtis was quite appealing in a low key sort of way, though I agree that her speaking style was a little odd. Hardly a "rubber fish" though! That was not fair at all, Peter. Some people found Worf sexy too. Then there were those women who longed for some time alone with Data. There's someone for everyone...

Oh, and a few people found Riker sexy, specially after he grew the beard.

Oh... that's right... you like that... It keeps your head company.

Sasha Tar - blonde and burly - like she could wrassle me and almost win - but she doesn't fight that hard, and I - oh, sorry. Top of the trailer road, on a moon, with dead silence. You can see three hundred yards on the moon and you can walk up to moose... if you know how and when.

Hell... if I am wishing, I will not only take the stunningly beautiful dusks, sunrises, moons at midnight, stars on the new moon so close and so many you could swish them with a wave, the Northern Lights dancing like green chiffon on a ballerina... I'll take a driving rain on a high wind with the temperature just above freezing as I pick my way thorugh a cedar swamp just to get close enough to see the big fellah's flag waving goodbye.

How many plays for a quarter?

Gnu, I'm sorry, but its nore than a little discomfiting that you start that post by wrassling Tasha Yar, & finish it by sneaking up on a moose....

*G* Just joking... though a Wildbeest by any other name is still bound to get a bit 'wilde' on occasion eh? *G*

No, the hottest thing by far on Star Trek of the female persuasion was Famke (The Gift), now an X-Woman (and curiously enough, there is Patrick Stewart again!!! is this a plot?).

Hmmm...

Hottest thing on Trek....

Thats either 'Ezri Dax' (who replaced Jedzia Dax) even though she was whingy & insecure, but cute as hell, OR,

'Jedzia Dax', in the short skirt tunic of the original 60's series, in the episode where they went back to the Tribbles incident...

Something to be said for 'Janice Rand' in the short tunic too (& lets be honest, she wasnt bad 20 years later in the film/episodes either).

Tash Yar didn't do a thing for me. Too masculine or something. Maybe it was the butch haircut. I don't know. I believe she had a fling with Data one time. That tells you a lot right there. ;-) I think what she really needed was just a machine with a good steady beat...

Jadzia Dax was a fine-looking woman, but DS9 was not a very good show. They abandoned the thought-provoking, imaginative scripts that had made Star Trek what it was and turned more to plain old conventional TV melodrama, as far as I could see...meaning: episodes were basically built on heated personality clashes and not a whole lot else. A soap opera, in other words, rather than a good science fiction tale.

LH... "Tash Yar didn't do a thing for me. Too masculine or something. Maybe it was the butch haircut."

You mean, I might be gay? This could be a monumental breakthrough in my life. This might explain why my marriage failed and why I have not been able to bring myself to seek another woman for companionship for these ten years plus.

On second thought, no, I do like pussy and she was a bitch. Damn. I thought it was solved. Oh well, back to celibacy.

I can see what you mean, LH, abot it being a bit 'soap-opera'm though I found it did get a little better later on, perhaps as the chars were more solidly established to base that 'melodrama' on.

Maybe thats purely MY perception though, as it took me a while to gt into DS9, I think because over here, they started showing Babylon 5 at around the same time (not that I mean LITERALLY the same time, in that the 'schedulings' clashed) & 2 space station-based sci-fi...
well...

'Next Gen' was a VERY hard act to follow though, as the Orig. series had been (though for different reasons) they couldnt cast another 'Captain' in the mould that Picard had formed, & had to do something different. Also there was a growing female audience for sci-fi, & film & TV media seem to believe that that soap-opera style is what women want, I think.

hey Peter T - Famke Jansson and her little dog Licorice go walking in the park with my dog a lot. My dog, a white Alsatian had a big crush on her dog for a few months and Licorice used to let him carry her stick. (she has a big thing for sticks and likes to hoild unto one with her teeth while her mamma swings her around in a circle)

They have, however, broken up recently. i don't know who did what to whom and they're not telling. I think Famke goes there with the same guy all the time but we only ever notice her dog who is extremely cute, very playful and quite the little heartbreaker with the boy dogs.

My dog is in love with a rottweiler mix now named Ilssa who he has been having an on and off thing with for 3 years. Ilssa is a very baaaaaad girl and tries to get him to go off the dog path with her to roll in coyote dung. She's like the tough gang girl who chews gum at your kids junior highschool. She has a little gang of smaller ddogs who worship her. She's asically troublke with a capital T. Licorice Jansson on the other hand is dainitier and much more ladylike. She's the kind of girl a dog can bring home to his master.

I am not a dog person -- hate the beasts actually -- but would buy a dog if you gave me the park coordinates.

The usual problem with Star Trek and its children is that the things that seemingly delight the scriptwriters bore the audience who seek PLOT! Q for example: when everything is possible, nothing matters. The Ferengi: can anything be less interesting than the Ferengi? And -- referrring to the ostensible theme of this thread -- anything to do with the Holodeck, especially when it goes wrong (oh, yawn).

And Wesley Crusher. Although the lying students episode was pretty good.

yours,

Peter T.

Let me rephrase that...

Is there ANYTHING WORTHWHILE that you do like?

(Not that I am putting up anything I have listed above as being particularly worthwhile, I suppose it was just for entertainment value)

What, other than the obvious, entertains you?

"Clinton, is there ANYTHING you DO like?"
The new "Battlestar Galactica" is the BEST Sci-Fi ever run on TV to date...

"Lucky Louie" is the funniest Sit-com in 20 years, by a damn long shot....

"Family Business" is the only entertaining docu regularly run on TV.....

Penn & Tellers:Bullshit is the BEST 'reality' TV show by a LONG neck.....

" Is there ANYTHING WORTHWHILE"
Define 'worthwild' you arrogant, condescending asshole! Come'on... I dare you!

" What, other than the obvious, entertains you?"
So there's no need to mention your mother?

So, you just called ME an arrogant condescending arsehole?

& I guess the last was meant to be an insult to my Mother...hmm.

Overall, a pretty extreme reaction, I'd have to say, what do others think?

I must have hit a pretty raw nerve there somehow.

"you just called ME an arrogant condescending arsehole"
No... I called you an "arrogant, condescending asshole"... ass... arse.... see the difference.... in the spelling at least...

"an insult to my Mother..."
Who'd insult a pro like her?

"what do others think"
Can't think for yourself? In need of validation? Too bad

"I must have hit a pretty raw nerve"
Not in the least....

Clinton is absolutely right about Battlestar Galactica. I fear for its life in multiple seasons, but the first few episodes were certainly among the best things I have ever seen on television period. Unbelievable. Blew all Spaceship television before it away forever.

Peter T - Famke and Licorice as well as my husband and our Alsatian can be found walking the the big hill of the Runyon Canyon Dog park in the Hollywood Hills just north of Franklin. Most people enter on Vista. Licorice can usually be found swinging from a stick weekends between 4 and 6 PM. Good luck. Wanna borrow my dog some weekend? He can introduce you to Licorice. They are still on speaking terms despite having fallen out of puppy love.

Woof, woof (down Licorice, down!!)

The only thing keeping me from hopping on a plane to take up this delightful invitation is that when I got to security at the American border they would not believe my reason for going into the United States, and I would be arrested. I may have to work on a different, more plausible story, involving bombs and exploding shoes.

Let me get back to you on this.....
