well I don't like the idea of killing people, whoever they are.

Its a sensual thing. Its like you're in the cinema, and the guy puts his hand on your knee. You know whether you're up for it - you know what your sexual orientation is.

I'm not up for capital punishment. From all the voyeuristic programmes about the death pernalty on the information tv channels - its pretty damned obvious that some people are getting off on the idea of killing people.

That's not to equate gay sex with killing people. But some people, man or women repel you; and that's the sort of visceral repulsion I feel about killing people.

Teribus - If 911 had not happened, GW would not have had the excuse to invade Iraq. Therefore, to trade Saddam for Osama would seemingly serve U.S. interests. Of course its not logical to assume that it would satisfy the Iraqi people but I don't think Bush or Saddam care about the people of Iraq.

Lets put it this way. What would the Iraqi people want? Choose one:

1. Saddam's execution

2. Bushs' execution

3. The execution of both Saddam and Bush

Now ask the same thing of the people of the U.S. but substitute the name Saddam for Osama.

They (the US) could have had Osama during the Afghanistan 'war'. Instead, they chose to announce to the entire world that they knew where he was and were following him by monitoring his mobile phone messages. Duh! I don't believe that even a yank can be that stoopid. Makes you wonder if they ever wanted him at all and, if not, why not? Was it because, despite the claims he made, they knew he had no involvement whatsoever in the events of 9/11?

The last two posts to this thread:

Peace, 10 Nov 06 - 02:23 AM:
"It would be apt to offer Saddam Hussein in trade for Osama bin Laden."

To which dianavan responded:
"Thats way to logical, Peace. It will never happen."

Now if those posts are to be taken seriously, do they illustrate accurately the grasp that both parties have of the situation and events leading up that situation.

It shows that dianavan has no take on logic at all, she is however correct in stating that "Peace's" proposed swap will never happen.

Maybe Peace can expand a bit on why the Iraqi Authorities would want to "trade" their erstwhile dictator and tormentor for some renegade Saudi national who has been on the run for the last four years, but who has yet to perpetrate any crimes against the people of Iraq.

Saddam Hussein's crimes on the other hand were largely committed against the Iraqi people and depending on what source is referenced, throughout Saddam's tenure of office (July 1979 to March 2003) on average 154 to 282 Iraqi citizens lost their lives each day to this man's regime.

Now having been caught, charged, tried and convicted in accordance with Iraqi Law, I'd say let the Iraqi Judicial process take care of the matter - Osama bin Laden doesn't enter the equation, since he scrambled for caves of Afghan/Pakistan border four years ago Osama bin Laden has rendered himself totally irrelevant.

I'm very much in favour of the Ceaucescu solution when a tyrant is brought down. My reasoning is simple: It usually saves a lot of lives.

After the Ceaucescu moment is gone I'm in favour of a trial without the possibility of death penalty as hard as it is for the survivors.

I disagree with the argument that killing him makes him a martyr for a simple reason: A life penalty in jail may have the same result but only stronger so. I can hear already the chants: Free Saddam. And the monthly reports from his lawyers that he is not treated well. That may be a lie or not, it will have the intentioned effect:

FREE SADDAM HUSSEIN (one could even (ab)use the well known Mandela tune)

Three and twenty years in a lonely prison cell
no one to love no one to talk, his life a living Hell...
(you'd hear your children whistling that tune)

"The fact remains that killing Saddam can only be considered an act of revenge"

Yup. What's wrong with revenge? Tastes very, very sweet. If he'd raped and killed your five year-old daughter, would you pat him on the head and say "I forgive you"? Of course not, you'd want his balls on a plate - i.e. revenge!

Ordinarily, I'd say "hang the bastard", but not on this occasion. My objection to hanging him has nothing to do with disliking revenge - it's simply that, by hanging him, another martyr will be created for Muslim loonies to use as an excuse to kill and maim innocent people. And throwing him in the nick to 'think about what he's done' won't make him change his ideas one iota - he **knows** he's done nothing wrong - but it will keep him from harming anyone else.

The entire trial should be done in a Shakespereian style.

In fact much of the events are taken from the Bard's own words
such as "first kill all the lawyers!"

Well they did kill at least 5 that I know of.

aside from the issue of whether he deserves it (which he does)
by all accounts it was a kangaroo court.
(the cbc radio journal 'as it happens' interviewed one of his defense lawyers and
many of their motions were just rejected out of hand with no legal reasons- ie. 'the judge does not want your papers' Imagine that happening in the US. This is the democracy the US imposed on IRaq?

and of course they only picked some relatively small issue to try him on. Otherwise too many embarrasing facts for the US might arise.

Manuel Noriega of Panama was only put in an Indiana prison.
W needs to outdo his dad.

Is it too much to ask to get the live Iraqi/US contractor feed of the hanging?

I can editorialize the death penalty we put upon foreign leaders in animation but it is a long list we are dealing with here.

Hanging?

From a cartoonist point of view there should be a punishment to fit the crime.

How about a wood chipper with the vent pointed at the crowd.
How cool for Bush and Cheney to be splattered in Victory.

Maybe a televised torture to death mini series. OR a realty game show where Saddam has to answer multiple choice questions to avoid certain tortures.

A good old fashioned Czar execution with every family member included in the carnage seems rash but we already have a good start with his sons already dead.

Death by a thousand cuts, Lines of Iraqis all get a turn to cut him with a teeny shick razor blade on a long stick.

Death by Ann Coulter. Let her go crazy on his ass.

Death at the hands of George W Bush himself.

other possibilities are too shocking for print.

Judicial murder is just that, whoever is handing out the sentence.

The fact is, the US is involved in this trial right up to it's hairy little nuts.

We now know that Donald Rumsfeld, the hawkish, squinting playground bully of GWB's gang offered Saddam the chance to avoid trial if the went on TV and asked all his buddies to stop fighting and make life easier for US forces occupying Iraq. Unsuprisingly, Saddam refused and the trial was allowed to go ahead by the US. Although the exact details of this story are vague, it is clear some sort of deal was being brokered by the US with various insurgent factions to arrange a ceasefire and allow Saddam leniency when sentenced - which doesn't give much credence to the notion of an independent Iraqi court putting Saddam on trial.

Of course, the fact the sentence was passed a couple of days before important elections in the US is just coincidence. The fact the television feed is supplied by a US contractor who routinely edits the sound and video means nothing.

The real problem here is the people in charge (the US) always wanted to execute Saddam, and so that's what was always going to happen. Unfortuately, as we know the US's own record on the death penalty is somewhat marked by the fact they have killed minors and mentally ill people in their own execution chambers previously and that GWB himself killed many people whilst Govenor of Texas - no case there for moral leadership then.

U.S. Had Key Role in Iraq Buildup
Trade in Chemical Arms Allowed Despite Their Use on Iranians, Kurds

By Michael Dobbs
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, December 30, 2002; Page A01

"A review of thousands of declassified government documents and interviews with former policymakers shows that U.S. intelligence and logistical support played a crucial role in shoring up Iraqi defenses against the "human wave" attacks by suicidal Iranian troops. The administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush authorized the sale to Iraq of numerous items that had both military and civilian applications, including poisonous chemicals and deadly biological viruses, such as anthrax and bubonic plague."

"Atta boy, T-Bird. What about 1980-1988?"

Teribus - US sale of military hardware (using that term in its broadest context) amounted to less than 0.41% of total arms sold to Iraq. Iraq's largest supplier of military hardware was Russia (61%) followed by France (19%) in the period between the Iran/Iraq War and Desert Storm.

Apologies if that is not clear enough the period described includes the Iran/Iraq War. In the period 1980 to 1990 Iraq was the largest importer of military hardware, less than one half of one percent of what Iraq bought/traded/were given was supplied by the United States of America, hardly what could be described as a substantial contribution, compared to what Russia and France gave Iraq for favourable oil concessions.

I do agree that the West should not be involved & that his trail should've been held in the country where the cime took place be the citizens of that nation & be held when the people of that country finally & truely are in position to rule themselves. I'm against the death penatly no matter what. The UN (I believe it was the UN) in the past has used prisons that are manned, operated & guarded by an international presence to contain people carrying a life sentence for crimes against humanity. If it were to be held in this nation as it was then the present US administration should also be on trail as co-conspirators as well as any others involved in knowingly selling the weapons used & knowing what they were being used for, unless they objected & tried to prevent this crime against humanity from happening. If they knew & weren't activily involved they should be summoned as key witnesses & the world should be privy to the whole of the trial. With the death of the Sadman away goes any futher chance of linking any officals to what really happened & it all goes under the rug & will be looked upon as a 'CLEAN & DEAD' issue which it's not. This whole issue is part of our present war & history shouldn't be written so quickly while it's still in the making. Let's write history when it finally becomes history & not put the cart before the Ass.

It's a lose/lose situation. If he's in jail it's motivation for terrorists to spring him by holding others hostage. If executed he becomes a martyr and others may try to avenge his death.

"Yes, Saddam is a beast but Saddam got his power from the U.S."

No HE did not! Saddam Hussein took over control of the B'aathist Party and the Presidency of Iraq in a coup in 1979. The cleansing of the Party faithful was extreme and barbaric. 1979 dianavan was about 12 years after Iraq had severed diplomatic relations with the US as a result of US support for Israel during the "Six-Day" War

"They (The US) gave him the chemicals and the military might."

No THEY did not! US sale of military hardware (using that term in its broadest context) amounted to less than 0.41% of total arms sold to Iraq. Iraq's largest supplier of military hardware was Russia (61%) followed by France (19%)in the period between the Iran/Iraq War and Desert Storm.

"The present government may not be a U.S. puppet government but, in fact, they are the enemies of Saddam. If he had been tried by a jury of his peers, would they condemn him?"

I would love to know what you would consider to be "a jury of his peers".

"To be fair, Saddam should have been tried by an international court for crimes against humanity."

Saddam's crimes were committed against his own people, therefore it was up to them to try him. They have and found him "Guilty" and they have sentenced him to hang. The reason he MUST die at the hands of due Iraqi legal process is to assure the Iraqi people that after his execution there is absolutely no prospect of him returning to power - He must die and he must be seen to die.

What they should with him:-

One day you serve him up a couple of hot steaming turds on a plate.

You say eat those, and if you do that every day for five years - you can go free.

Trust me on this one, I had a job with exactly those terms and conditions - and I promise you - he won't like it. After about two years, you wake up every morning wondering if today's the day you'll do yourself in.

After five years, you say well done! We extended your contract.
