Silly me! Got whisky in it now. Much better, takes the horrid taste away. Do you know Jeff Johnson? He's a mathy lecturer, might even be a prof, there. Yes, there's probably hundreds of staff members, but he's been there years and is likely to hang out in folky places. Also, knowing your propensity for phonofiddles have you come across the Boodle Um Jug Stompers in that area? Don't know if they're still going or not. Off topic? No, we've still got lots of words.
Jo

My brand new OU phone book has him down as Johnson, Jeffrey,S Res Fell, but I haven't met the gentleman. I'd be happy if you'd like to make the introductions. 'Stompers? Rings a bell, but I haven't seen 'em.

Actually Jo, if you like words per se, have a look here: http://www.quinion.com/words/

Steve

Funny, no jokes in this post ... must be the water ...

The circle closes: I got into this place via a recommendation from someone on the OU alumni site. Hardly been there since.

Another OU Alumnus? We should start our own thread - maybe our own Website!

Jo, I haven't got a propensity for phonofiddles - I'd just stand 'em on my leg, like everybody else.

What a lot of lovely words! I liked this one: The symptoms of Information Fatigue Syndrome include "a hyper-aroused psychological condition", "paralysis of analytical capacity", and "anxiety and self-doubt", leading to "foolish decisions and flawed conclusions".
Sounds familiar.
Say hello to Jeff if you meet him.
The Boodle-Ums were led by a chap called Smot, at least that's what his brother called him. Smot ( a certain Mr Toms)(it's a palindrome!!) was later heard to be playing in an English ceilidh band with a certain Mr Powell, unbeknownst to their respective brothers, curiously enough also known as Mr Toms and Mr Powell, in Devon! (with whom I was playing at the time).

Actually, did you know, (I start to talk like this in the pub around 9.30 - 10 o'clock, to complete strangers) there are more words in the English language than in any other? And where we don't just happen to have the mot just we'll happily pinch somebody else's, unlike some languages (no names, no pack drill!). I have to say, though, I rather enjoy the way the Germans won't invent a new word when four or five old ones will do the job just as well: why call something a tank when you can call it an armoured warfare vehicle? And where else would they have a word for attempt on the life of the aunt of a Hottentot potententate?

Steve

What? Oh, sorry: Hottentotenpotentatentantentotenattenten. I'm grateful to Fritz Spiegel for enriching my life with that one. (But I don't know if it's die der or das.)

Ah, AndyG, you must be talking about the Coneygeare in St Neots. It's not too hard to find once you've been there a couple of times.

Hitchin Folk Club have some good people on - and if you like sessions, there's a very good one at the Greyhound pub in St Ippolyts (just outside Hitchin) on the 4th Wednesday of every month.

You're dead right about the Coneygeare, Sue; the problem is, it's impossible to find the first time! And why are all the roads around Cambridge only signposted in the direction you've just come? You can only find the right road after you realise you've taken a wrong turn.

Hi Susanna,

Welcome to Mudcat.

First of all, try doing a search in the DT (Digital Tradition database) which has a search box at the top of this page. Keep both the DT and the Forum ticked because you may also find some good discussions in the Forum on the song you are after.

If you still don't find what you want then you can start a new thread.
And it works a lot better if you start a new thread with your request, using some info in the thread title, e.g.

Dubliners song: Montreux Monto

Do you mean this MONTO. The Dubliners have recorded this.

You'll find more verses and a history of the song here Lyr Req: Monto
