Subject: RE: BS: Size zreo, get a life From: Peace Date: 06 Feb 07 - 06:36 PM "REMEMBER when women aspired to be a perfect size 10? Well, forget that notion because these days a size 10 is seen as positively obese... at least in Hollywood. A disturbing new phenomenon is heading across the Atlantic that deems the new ideal size an astonishing size zero - that's a teensy UK size 4. For girls that means fitting into a pair of jeans with a 22-inch waist - that of an average British eight-year-old. Yet spurred on by a growing legion of super-skinny celebs including reality show star Nicole Richie, Superman actress Kate Bosworth and our own "skinny icon" Victoria Beckham, size 0 is now touted not only as an attainable, but a must-get goal by dedicated followers of fashion." |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zreo, get a life From: Richard Bridge Date: 06 Feb 07 - 07:16 PM The shock factor of the numbers is actually due to the fatting up of sizes, like the dumbing down of exams. The relatively voluptuous beauties of the 50s were 36 24 36, remember, so a 22 inch waist on a woman is hardly anorectic. Some of the heroin chic catwalk beauties certainly are unhealthy, but get the facts straight. A 22 inch waist ona woman is not unhealthy in itself. A 22 inch waist on the average 8 year old female in the UK is a step too far in the opposite direction. By the way, I'm fat, but I know I'd be healthier if I was thin. |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zreo, get a life From: Scrump Date: 07 Feb 07 - 10:38 AM Size zero means a person has disappeared completely. I can think of a few of these airhead 'supermodels' and 'celebrities' of both genders who I'd like to see do that. :D Bring it on Kate, Pete, Posh, Becks, Jade, ...! |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zreo, get a life From: GUEST,Scoville Date: 07 Feb 07 - 02:20 PM I run between a size 16 and size 18 in 1950's pattern sizes (34-26-37 to 36-28-39, basically), and I can do it without the 1950's Girdle that Ate Chicago, too. Sadly, modern clothes are not made for that kind of measurement ratio and I basically had to stop wearing pants because none of them fit both at the waist and the hips. This says Bettie Page was 36-23-35. Why, oh, why did curves go out of style?? Oddly, I'm not sure what size I am in modern clothes--I just wear what fits and ignore the number. |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zreo, get a life From: Alec Date: 07 Feb 07 - 02:41 PM From a male point of view I admire the physiques of both Darcey Bussell & Dawn French. I am also aware that the era of Marilyn Monroe was also the era of Audrey Hepburn.Darcey & Audrey were not skin & bone, both have/had excellent muscle tone,I think this crucial fact is disregarded by advocates of size zero.Thin does not equal beauty.Beauty comes in all shapes & sizes. Those designers who imply otherwise stand to profit from doing so. |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zero, get a life From: Tinker Date: 07 Feb 07 - 04:34 PM Sizes have changes dramatically over the last thirty years. With some real exercise a couple of years ago I dropped some of the extra pounds on my 5'2" frame and suddenly found myself fitting in a size 4. When I reached to the back of the closet and pulled out some BC clothing (before children) I discovered that my old size 6 were about 3 sizes too small!!! (They are probably the same as a 0 now) If my weight ever went down to where the doctor would like to see it, I probably would be about a 2... but it seems remote at this point...BG |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zero, get a life From: Linda Goodman Zebooker Date: 07 Feb 07 - 05:45 PM The rule used to be that the more expensive clothes were sized with smaller numbers than the cheaper clothes. About 25 years ago, the most expensive dress I had was a size 2. It was exactly the same size as the much less costly 6's that made up the rest of my dress wardrobe. (sigh - now I'd be real happy with a 10). Linda |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zero, get a life From: Scrump Date: 07 Feb 07 - 05:50 PM The point is, most women look better at their natural weight, whether that happens to be slim or not so slim. What looks awful are these women who starve themselves unnaturally thin. |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zero, get a life From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 08 Feb 07 - 08:47 AM Do you think that a woman who starves herself to death in order to be fashionable is eligible for one of those 'Darwin Awards'? |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zero, get a life From: JeremyC Date: 08 Feb 07 - 09:12 AM The thing some women need to understand is that women don't look good because they're curvy or skinny or whatever, they look good because they're women. Being a fan of women myself, I don't like the way women are encouraged to either "accept themselves" if they're obese or starve themselves to fit some artificial standard and look like a typical anorexic model. Any woman I find attractive looks best at the weight that's right for her, and that varies based on the individual woman. Wasn't there a study done on body types some years ago that highlighted the differences between the way men and women see their bodies (and the opposite sex's bodies)? The result was something like: men thought they looked about the way they should, figured that women liked that body type in a man, and they generally picked a female body type that's around average as what they considered an "attractive woman," while women consistently thought they should look several sizes below where they were at, thought that this was what men liked, and yet they chose an "average" male body as "attractive." I remember hearing about that in Psychology class way back when, and I thought it was pretty interesting. Why is it that there's no way you can talk a woman into thinking she's attractive when she gets fixated on being "too fat"? It's so frustrating. |

Subject: RE: BS: Size zero, get a life From: Richard Bridge Date: 08 Feb 07 - 02:27 PM Well, I've always fancied skinny women. But it is definitely the case that the ones who look best in clothes could use a little more covering when the clothes come off. I formed that view after an evening's intensive study at the Casino de Paris. |
