Date: 27 Oct 05 - 06:59 PM I come to join the wanderful people Who come from near and far away To share their music and their knowledge And share their love both night and day. I'm goin' there to sing my heart out, Play until my fingers bleed Until my voice begins to fail me And someone else must sing the lead. |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: SINSULL Date: 27 Oct 05 - 05:10 PM Colin left this morning =- I can finally muse over this year's Getaway. It was the best ever. So many new friends; so many "old" ones; great music and laughter. A few tears. This year's "I wish I could take home" award goes to Geoff the Duck. Even without the banjo, the man is a treasure. Beautiful wife. Beautiful children; beautiful soul. Resting now. SINS |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Tinker Date: 27 Oct 05 - 06:48 AM Well, this year's been a little different since my first Getaway guest came in on the 12th and they'll be back tonight for a couple more nights. The grounding influences of everyday life seem to get pushed aside when Getaway comes home. Maybe I'll just have to open a home for wayfaring folkies..... Kathy |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: KT Date: 27 Oct 05 - 01:19 AM Great thought, Dani. I suspect that you (kind soul that you are) do that sort of thing all the time, not just in the after Getaway high! |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ebbie Date: 27 Oct 05 - 12:41 AM Great thought, Dani. The thought kept recurring to me at the Getaway that we were seeing and being seen in our true colors. The people in the car next to you and the one next to them and the next one- who knows? We all need a place to rest. I haven't 'seen' Mudcatters but I have had two distinct dreams about Camp Ramblewood. In last night's dream it was chilly! Oh- I just remembered the first one- I'm outdoors by a red building -lying on the grass, would you believe - playing a CD of the Getaway. Up the roadway below the knoll where I was comes a straggly row of Getaway-ers, cheerful and noisy. Just as they passed, Janie looked up at me and smiled and waved. (Hi, Janie!) |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ferrara Date: 26 Oct 05 - 11:42 PM No, Bobert, Tannywheeler (Cynthia) and Bob live in Austin. He makes great home made sausage, too, she says; I told her he should bring that for the Friday potluck next year. Lorraine, I'm still glowing. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Amos Date: 26 Oct 05 - 10:18 PM I suspect you're having a telepathic period, KT, which can be confusing if you don't notice it!! Just keep on being you and let the flow proceed and all will be well!! A |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: KT Date: 26 Oct 05 - 10:16 PM Oh, me too, Janie!!! What a grand time we'd have!! |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Dani Date: 26 Oct 05 - 10:15 PM I have a similar experience, but it happens when I look at people in a car next to me in traffic, or waiting in line somewhere, and I see a tired face, or a stressed-out face, just a plain-ol-face, and think, "I don't know you. I don't know a blessed thing about you. But who knows? You just MIGHT be the type that piles into a car once a year to sing your heart out with like-minded weirdo-folkie types. Who the hell knows?!! My God, you might do it every Tuesday night!" And then I have to smile at them. And they smile back. And then, I think, maybe I DO know you ; ) Dani |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Janie Date: 26 Oct 05 - 10:07 PM Oh, but KT, I DID see you today-as I gazed at the Getaway pictures. Wish I was looking at you right now, sitting across from me in the living room, with Ebbie and Dani....talking, laughing, sharing ourselves, singing and trading songs. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: KT Date: 26 Oct 05 - 09:39 PM Is anyone else having this experience? I'll be walking down the street, and see some of my new Getaway pals. Just yesterday I "saw" LEJ and Tannywheeler, and the day before I "saw" Jacqui and Janie. Of course it wasn't really them, but they sure looked like them and made me do a double take!! |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Maryrrf Date: 26 Oct 05 - 09:17 PM I'm really amazed at how much good this weekend did me, and my friend Maria says the same thing. I work in a very corporate environment - have to for the time being mainly because my son needs the insurance coverage and I need to be in a big company. Sometimes I feel so drained, and it seems like the big impersonal corporation just overwhelms me. I come home and don't even feel like singing a song or picking up an instrument. But at the Getaway I found myself coming back to life - everything seemed so "real". The great thing about folk music is that it's plain and simple and very human. At work everything seems complicated and abstract. It was good to get a dose of humanity and simplicity. Now I feel like singing again. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: GUEST,Lorraine Date: 26 Oct 05 - 09:06 PM There were lots of special moments for me too. In Kathy's workshop for Helen, the big full choruses were wonderful. Jeri's song that she'd sung for Helen touched me- I want to hear it again please. Meeting Justine at dinner and discussing Dungeons and Dragons (almost introducing her to Barry because I hadn't figured it out). George Ward's workshoop (he's such a good singer) especially his song you can't build a barn without friends (I don't know the real title) Has he recorded that anywhere? Becoming buddies with Sandy LaPrell. Watching Ken and Barry sing and interact, listening to Mary Smith sing, enjoying Tom and Liz singing behind me during the sunday concert, and Scarpis singing the Elvis song with no accent, Mary Js's song in the Ballads session of the Ghost Ship, George and Mary's whole set, Getting a hug from Mick, rubbing KarenK's back and Ebbie rubbing mine! Watching Rita Glow and Bill grin. Watching the youngsters show off their treasures that George had made or hidden for them, sitting by the pond with Pete and Will watching the ducks....There were times that I felt out of place or just too self conscious to be comfortable,I am grunpy with myself for not singing in the concert-maybe next year, but it was a wonderful Getaway. Thanks to all. Lorraine |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Bobert Date: 26 Oct 05 - 08:43 PM Ahhhh, this ain't the same Bob who has been down to Archie Edwards Barber Shop in D.C. with the bodhrans, is it, Rita???... |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ferrara Date: 26 Oct 05 - 06:29 PM I was just talking to Tannywheeler and she told me her husband, Bob, makes (and plays) bodhrans, as well as sets of bones. Let's hope both of them can come next year, huh? |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ebbie Date: 26 Oct 05 - 06:13 PM Yes, I do, Rita- and it's a good one. Last year most of the recording I did was sub standard, I didn't have an external mike so too much extraneous stuff was picked up. This year's is much better- (except for what appears to be an incipient case of asthma on my part! I'll have to have that checked out.) Next year I want to see about acquiring a lightweight mike stand- every time I moved the mike, it made noise. Irritating as can be. But there are a lot of really good recordings. My plan is to take the minidiscs to a tech shop and have them make master CDs from them- I suspect there will be 7 or so - only about 80 minutes goes onto each CD and I think I will have something like 500 minutes. Haven't finished the clean up process yet so new firm figures yet. Before I do that, I will start a thread on the identities of singers and songs. That will give each person one last chance to say 'NO WAY'!! After that I'll finish the process and burn a copy for everyone who wants one- or follow through on whatever better ideas people have. Maybe donate a copy to the Mudcat? In any case, there are a ton of songs there that I want to learn. Y'all have BEAUTIFUL voices and you know many, many songs that I had never heard. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ferrara Date: 26 Oct 05 - 05:28 PM Ebbie, do you have a recording of Skarpi's cowboy song? Oh, I hope so! Skarpi, what a wonderful moment that was. |

From: skarpi Date: 26 Oct 05 - 04:21 PM Bodhráns songs workshop , yes there are many songs that can be used and I think that those who play bodhrán would like take part in that kind of workshop. I would like to do that workshop. bomm taki bomm bommm All the best Skarpi Iceland. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: MMario Date: 26 Oct 05 - 04:11 PM hmmm- a workshop on bodrhan songs? 'Brian the King' almost *demands* bodrhans - wouldn't mind trying it with a massed bodrhan choir. Get enough of them and maybe I could even stay on beat! To our shy friend - I am almost pathologically afraid of new situations, entering new places, mneeting new people, etc. My first Getaway I almost turned the car around and drove away.and this was despite having met a number of people previously at Old Songs, and knowing them from the mudcat. So I can sympathise. I missed a good section of Sunday nights concert because I had to go outside until the shaking stopped after my turn. (My stage fright tends to hit AFTER performance rather then before). But the music is worth it. But that doesn't mean you have to perform if you don't want to - you can always request a tune or song when it's your turn. (This backfired on me once when I requested one from a much more seasoned performer - and when his turn came he requested one he knew I did.) |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Jeri Date: 25 Oct 05 - 11:59 PM Perhaps I can send mine to Jeff if I can get them off the data card tomorrow. I was supposed to do computer stuff today, but the power went out at 11:30 and didn't come on until 6-something, when I was on my way to a house concert. Miserable day, good ending. Pauline and others, the "What is this?" is a guitar. LEJ was playing it for a while. It didn't sound bad, but it was quiet. It's an attractive 6-string arm rest. Pauline, I'm glad you took the picture because I've tried to describe it without much success. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ferrara Date: 25 Oct 05 - 11:53 PM Wahhhhh!!!! I can only hope that whatever is slowing down my system will get fixed quickly! (Can hardly get Mudcat, either, I'm walking away from the computer and working on my woodburning while I wait, every time I click on a new link.) |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Bill D Date: 25 Oct 05 - 08:28 PM about those pics: as some of you know, I have touted the Opera browser a lot....now it has become free, and as a bonus, I found that they give you free space to post images. "How many pictures can I upload? As many as you want. Each user has a disk quota limit of 300MB, so go crazy." I have 23 MB of Getaway 2005, so I guess I will try it there! |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Pauline L Date: 25 Oct 05 - 08:25 PM Tinker, thanks for your instructions. My photos are now on the Flickr Mudcat photo pool. I've added names of most of the people, but I'd appreciate some help with the others' names. Also, I apologize for any mistakes I've made in names or spellings. I've posted under the pseudonym Julia_Longwing (name of a species of butterfly) to get around the limits Flickr placed on me. I'm enjoying everyone else's photos, and I hope you enjoy mine. |
