OK, I am here and in class. I thought you were in the desert this week Amos, that's why I haven't called. I have no computer access except during class time so my updates will be limited. I'll call tonight.

By the way I have not been authorized to rent a car so I am carless. I may rent one for the weekend.

Sorry to disappoint, Charley, but I've been so busy lately I barely have time to check into the 'Cat much less go searching the internet. Last night was the first time in a long, long time that I could sit and just surf. I was looking for furniture designs that I like enough to try to build once I get my workshop set up. Found some good ones. Besides, I'm not much good at the promotion/sing with strangers thing.

Amos-

The Lynx of course was built in Rockport, Maine. Wicked good looking topsail schooner. Love to see her and the California blasting away at each other! Bet the HMS Rose could sink both of them together.

I know you're busy but can you point Brett to someone who isn't and who might have an interest in following up contacts with the Museum? I can't fly out this time around but maybe in a year or two.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

From the Maritime Museum's website:

1812 Privateer Lynx Visits the Maritime Museum in February (1/26/2004)

Visitors Will Have a Chance to Experience the Thrill of 19th Century Combat at Sea

SAN DIEGO—Lynx, a magnificent representation of an early 19th century privateer, will be visiting the Maritime Museum of San Diego on Presidents Day weekend, February 13-16, 2004. Privateers were the first ships to defend the United States when Royal Navy warships blockaded American ports during the War of 1812. She will be joined by the museum's own Californian each afternoon as they recreate 19th century naval combat on San Diego Bay. Cannon battle reenactments take place from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost is $45 for adults and $25 for children 12 and under. Lynx will be open to the public each morning for dockside tours 9:00 a.m. – Noon. Dockside tours are included with admission to the maritime museum.

Lynx is a 122-foot topsail schooner launched on July 28, 2001. She carries over 4500 square feet of sail and her main mast rises 94-feet above her deck. The privateer Lynx is operated by The Defense of Freedom Foundation of Newport Beach, CA and is busy year round with educational programs, sail training, public sails and private events. More information on Lynx can be found at: www.defenseoffreedom.org.

Advance tickets for cannon battles will be sold on-line only at www.sdmaritime.org. A limited number of tickets may be available on the morning of the event, however purchasing tickets in advance is strongly recommended as cannon battles usually sell out. Children under 6 or under 45 lbs. Are not allowed on board for cannon battles. For more information please call the Maritime Museum of San Diego at 619-234-9153 ext. 101 or check their website at: www.sdmaritime.org.

Actually, TwentyNine Palms is a huge expanse of rock and sand where the Marine Corps conducts training exercises with real tanks and howitzers and such. We aretesting some devices we are developing for using their radios to provide an integrated display of unit locations for managing the training exercises and preventing accidental death (by knowing who is where more clearly). So it's radios and computers, basically.

Charlie: we do what we can!! Brett and I will be strolling the waterfront finding out what we can. Sorry I can't invest more time in the effort; perhaps you should come out here and do the job properly -- besides, it would keep you warm! :>))

Hey, Brett, did you know that the HMS Surpise (aka HMS Rose) is currently berthed at the San Diego Maritime Museum, alongside the Star of India? The Surprise will be on exhibit for the rest of this year.

You really should do some websearching to establish some contacts as we did with the James Craig in Sydney. Too bad Amos is out of the loop but someone in San Diego must do traditional sea songs and have some contacts with the shipkeepers.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Brett-

Maybe someone can get you a useful e-mail address for the Star of India crew. I suppose they have a website. Sure worth checking out if you have the time. They actually take her for a sail now and then.

Charley Noble

I definitely want to get to the Maritine Museum. I didn't get to see much of Sydney's museum when I was there. I have the weekend to get out and see the sites. I don't know how the week nights will be. Generally a Government class is a skate time. They are set up so the dullest student can pass it so I generally slide through with staying awake through most of the class time and spend the evenings sampling the fleshpots of whatever city I am in.

This course is proving to be a different animal entirely. To start with there is six weeks of on-line work to get through before we report to class. I think there will even be homework! And a paper to write. The organizers apparently didn't get the memo that describes how a Government class should be set up.

But I am looking forward to exploring the scene with you, Amos. I hope we can get together somewhere and do some music. And I hope to see whatever sights San Diego can offer.

Star of India, previously known as the Euterpe, ran wool from New Zealand to England and emigrants to New Zealand from England. I had the rare opportunity to conduct a wedding on her quarterdeck, because the bride was the grand-daughter of a woman who had emigrated to New Zealand on her. Iron plate riveted hull, a beauty of a tall ship indeed.

I am afraid I am going to be strapped for time and won't be able to take the time to penetrate the mysteries of the Maritime Museum's organization and such, though -- I am out in Twenty Nine Palms testing hardware in the desert next week and will barely be back before Brett arrives in town!

Brett, I am PMing you my phone numbers. Call me when you arrrive and we will work out some time together.

Regards,

Amos

March 6??? Just early enough in spring that you may get snowed in until June. Welcome, Brett.

Amos-

What's your tall ship called, Star of ? You could do worse than setting up a shanty workshop with the crew and some of your regulars. Brett did a great job when we were downunder in Sydney aboard the James Craig leading shanties. Takes some organizing but the rewards are great.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well, the Folk Alliance Conference is going on Feb 26-29. See here.

It's a trade show, so you can't go to a lot of the "official" stuff without a badge, but there'll be all sorts of folkies around of every ilk. (Particularly singer-songwriters of course since they all want to be stars and a business conference is more in their line than for the traddies).

Ayuh! I'll be there from February 21 to March 5. I fly out to Maine on March 6.

What's happening in town? Any folk music going on out there?
