From Frank Rich:

"Tomorrow night is the fourth anniversary of President Bush's prime-time address declaring the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the broad sweep of history, four years is a nanosecond, but in America, where memories are congenitally short, it's an eternity. That's why a revisionist history of the White House's rush to war, much of it written by its initial cheerleaders, has already taken hold. In this exonerating fictionalization of the story, nearly every politician and pundit in Washington was duped by the same "bad intelligence" before the war, and few imagined that the administration would so botch the invasion's aftermath or that the occupation would go on so long. "If only I had known then what I know now ..." has been the persistent refrain of the war supporters who subsequently disowned the fiasco. But the embarrassing reality is that much of the damning truth about the administration's case for war and its hubristic expectations for a cakewalk were publicly available before the war, hiding in plain sight, to be seen by anyone who wanted to look..."

The rest

I see this revisionism on TV and radio, here on Mudcat, and from some of my dearest relatives with whom I had these very arguments four years ago tonight sitting in this same vacation condo.

Not a happy occasion.

Ahhhhh, what happened to the "Shock 'n Awe"??? No, forget that one, what happened to "Mission Accomplished"???

But now we have a bunch or moronis Bishite parrots going 'round sayin' that if we don't fight 'um there then we're gonna have to fight 'um here... Problem is that intllegence folks and independent analysts say this ain't true... They say that the AlQeada folks in Iraq are homegrown and all they want to do is get the Americans out and then defend themselves against the Sheiites... Not exactly bin Ladens....

But yet the US trudges ahead into what now even the DoD folks are callin' a "civil war" with no clwear "mission" other than "victory", whatever the Hell that means in a "civil war" unless the US wants to take sides and participate in some ethnic cleansing of it's own...

This is the stupidist foriegn policy blunder perhaps in US history because we had Vietnam as a model of not gettin' in the middle of or creating and then gettin' in the middle of another country's "civil war"...

I just wish the Bushite brownshirts would speak some real common sense here rather then keep inventing more bull*** to cover the last obsolete bull***...

And, personally, I'm mad as Hell at people who continue to support this mission-less venture... Quit moving the goal posts and talk straight... Our side hasn't changed it's story since Day 1 while each day we have to listen to the Lie-de-jour...

If the C-in-C said to kill all male children under the age of two, Bush supporters would get right on it. I wish the fuckers would go to Iraq instead of sending someone else's kid. Piss on the gutless bastards.

The regrets of the man who brought down Saddam -

The Iraqi with a sledgehammer who led the crowd in toppling that Saddam statue now wishes Saddam was back.

"There were lots of people from my tribe who were also put in prison or hanged. It became my dream ever since I saw them building that statue to one day topple it."

Yet he now says he would prefer to be living under Saddam than under US occupation. He said: "The devil you know [is] better than the devil you don't. We no longer know friend from foe. The situation is becoming more dangerous. It's not getting better at all. People are poor and the prices are going higher and higher."

Saddam, he says, "was like Stalin. But the occupation is proving to be worse".

This may be a bit off the thread intent. I read Rich's column (as I do each week). Always brilliant and incisive.

What bothers me is something that never seems to be brought up.   People are always bemoaning the sad plight of the vets, the injuries, the supporting of troops, and all other things relating to this war. The thing that never really gets much "ink" is how this nation was led into a totally unnecessary conflict becase it was a war of choice by a totally corrupt administration. This makes LBJ's Gulf of Tonkin representation seem like an honest belief in promulgating actions he inherited. Wrong as that was.

Comedians may joke about GWB and Cheney. Humor, unfortunately, is not getting them out of office.    People are dying because of these two---and their "gang" of incompetent and agreeing cohorts.

We can only hope that the Democrats will hold them in check now, the next election (if GWB cannot think of a way of avoiding it) will elect someone of stature---and, dare I say, intelligence.

You can go to Yale because of wealth and connection. Does not make you bright.

Here is a bumper sticker slogan to aid in thinking of this war:

Don't Trust Reformed Drinkers and Fanatics.

The fourth anniversary eh? How long did any of you think it was going to last? Please don't quote the then Secretary of Defence, Donald Rumsfeld on the period and time estimate that it would take to defeat Saddam Hussein's forces, the MNF were well inside the predicted time frame for that.

My own prediction from before the thing kicked off was that the US would be involved for about as long as it took UK forces in Malaya. Its a long haul thing chaps if you want it to end up right, get used to it.

Unfortunately because of your Presidential electoral system and recent election results politically at the moment your entire system could be described as "Lame Duck", completely useless and incapable of providing any direction or leadership.

- A President and Administration hamstrung whenever they try to do anything;
- A bunch of so-called politicians who wish to run for the Presidency in 2008, who are absolutely scared stiff to take any position on any subject at the moment for fear of tripping themselves up in their race for self advancement;
- Political parties trying to pander to every-which sort of voter group in the run up to the 2008 elections.

Absolutely ridiculous state of affairs, your country is at war, your country is fighting a foe that selected you as its victims about twenty years ago, they are not going to give up irrespective of who you vote for in 2008. Wake up to the fact and collectively do something about it - believe me its a war you've got to win, you have no choice, forget your lame-assed comparisons to Vietnam, that was never going to follow you home, this one will if you do your usual, give up at the first sign of trouble and haul-ass back to the good-old US of A.

Your professional armed forces are fully capable and willing to see this through, all they need is your support, not arguements about funding or troop levels at your highest level of government.
