I've started a new thread so the folks around the Fort Worth area might notice and decide to converge on the Main Street Arts Festival from April 19 - 22, 2007. I stated in another thread that I usually don't attend because of the crowds and cost, but I would love to meet some of the other area Mudcatters, so I will add this into my weekend plans. (I was *that* close to seeing Jed Marum again last week, but he cut off his pony tail and I didn't recognize him in the audience!) I'll wear my Mudcat t-shirt when I'm there to make it easier to be spotted in the crowd.

I'm not a musician or a performer*, so I won't try to pull together a musical evening, but I'm sure if others are interested, we can find space in the living room (or maybe someone else who isn't remodeling a house they're living in has space?). PM and we can work something out.

Maggie (Stilly River Sage)

*I have my father's music collection, which amounts to a lot of really interesting and in some cases, fairly obscure music, so if there is something you're wanting to look up, just say the word.

Thanks Stilly River Sage

However, currently I'm a tourist (not a traveller), I'm allowed to do touristy things when I'm on holiday!

I guess if I lived here all the time I'd soon get the measure of what to do and what not to do.

Main Street will give you a view of a lot of stuff--since we have artists coming in from far-flung places like Indiana I can't claim that it is Texas arts. . .

The Water Garden reopened a couple of months ago in the south end of downtown south of the convention center. That's a nice place to visit while in the area. It's a spot where films and television programs have been filmed, so it might look familiar.

What all are you planning as a tourist, Toobusybee? If you have the feet for it, we have a fantastic collection of museums in the cultural district, west of downtown. There are the usual tourist spots of the Stockyards and the Fort Worth Zoo. There are interesting things in the region, and because it isn't too hot yet and it is still green and wildflowers are out in profusion, there are some great drives. Let me know what you're interested in and I can recommend a couple of pretty drives (based on the time you have, the kind of destination or sights you want to see, etc.)

Hey, thanks!

This will be my first time doing this show -- a show I'm told is absotively HUGE (GI-NORMOUS?). It promises to be long days -- 10AM-10PM each of the four days, but I'd love to meet any of you if you stop by and introduce yourself. I'm hoping to bring along a guitar and I've been known to have been talked into playing hooky from the booth (my wife is very helpful and forgiving of my music habit -- a valued enabler) to share a tune or two.

If you stop by the show, don't look for John Hardly. Look for a booth that looks like this.

Maybe I'll see you there!

I put your name in the other thread, but should have done it here as well.

Yes, it is a very large festival. I've always wondered how so many people get so much stuff out of the way when our famous spring thunderstorms plow over the top of it. Something you might want to be thinking about also. . . four days is a long time to go without thunderstorms down here. We had one pop up last night out of the blue.

John - I'll do my best to pop by your booth and say hello. And if you have a chance to slip out - some of the musical performers will be Asleep at the Wheel, Mavis Staples and Brave Combo. So depending on your musical tastes there should be someone worth listening to.

Let me first say, "Sorry" for hitting the wrong button leading to an empty box. Now - Silly River Sage, please take note (and I know this is a music thread, but...) "Fort Worth" is now and ever more to be referred to as "Hockeytown South." It's my fault, I know, but I'm a transplanted yank (almost 30 years now) who still simply loves his
DETROIT RED WINGS - I hope you understand. Oh, yes, don't forget to
send folks to the new MacHenry's now in the Hockeytown South hospital district - nice little americana/folk/sometimes celtic bar. Cheers.

I think "Hockeytown" must be code used by a rather exclusive set of fans. ;-) I've never heard it (but then, I don't read the sports page or bother to watch the sports on the local news). And I grew up not in a "Yankee" clime but in a Northwestern one where there is hockey also. Just never cared for it.

I went back and looked at the Toobusybee entry in the other thread--the cultural district is a good area to end up. What brings you here? You're in time to get into the Amon Carter before they close for several months to do some repairs on the sprinkler system. And the Modern, what a wonderful place. Kimball, Science, Cowgirl, lots of interesting museums over there. Have you visited anything else in the region? And have you found some of the better restaurants?

Fort Worth will always be the birthplace of Western Swing, thanks to Milton Brown, leader of the first Western Swing band.

My wife and I go to the Omni theater in the science center probably once a month. I do a "strolling folkie" gig about every six weeks down at Sundance Square and that's a lot of fun - there's always something going on at Sundance with great restaurants and the
8.0 Bar with their outdoor music stage.

Don't forget the miniature railroad car ride over by the zoo off of University - some good restaurants over there, too (Hoffbrau Steaks and one of the BEST greasy spoons in all of Texas - The Old South Pancake House - best time to go there is after midnight).

Our favorite Mexican place is up on Camp Bowie a couple of miles out from the Cultural District - The Original Mexican Restaurant - great enchiladas and the best beans around. By the way, the OMR is right
across the street from a pretty good seafood restaurant, too. I spent twenty-four years in Dallas and now five in Fort Worth (better known as Hockeytown South) and Dallas can't hold a candle. Oh, yeah, can't forget the Stockyards and their restaurants and shops and stores - great stuff. Have a good time. Cheers.

A neighbor has told me about the Old South Pancake House. Sounds wonderful, but you might want to think twice about it if you have any coronary health issues. ;-)

My favorite Mexican restaurant is La Playa Maya, on Hemphill, in the heart of an at best "marginal" neighborhood. But it's wonderful food at good prices. Just south of the Travis Avenue Baptist Church annex building on Hemphill on the west side of the street. (I park in the church parking lot because my pickup is sometimes not easy to maneuver in their own smallish lot). There is a second location on the north side of town on Main Street. Both of these are in restored old Victorian-era houses.

My favorie Mexican place is still Benito's on Magnolia. It has a great breakfast served all day. Try the Migas or the Case Flamado. It's open really late on the weekends. Like 2 or 4 AM.

Hi SRS

If it was me you were asking what brought me to the Cultural District, it's because my sister, husband and two nieces live here.

Got a number of things planned. I arrived Friday evening so the first few days were spent in recovering from the flight and celebrating easter. Yesterday went to cowtown. We're planning to go to some gigs. Also a friend of mine collects toy soldiers so I've promised to keep an eye out for them at antique shops/malls. However as the visit is mainly for my family we're being fairly relaxed about it; also my youngest niece is still in school so we don't like to do too much without her - it seems mean!

I'll keep an eye out for stalls and things.

Thanks

Tobusybee

Toobusybee, if you want an easy drive out in to a more rural part of Texas and a chance to see a small historic town, a trip to Granbury (southwest of Fort Worth) fills an afternoon nicely. Your local relatives will no doubt know of the place. There is a beautiful little Courthouse square and though you might have to park on a side street and walk back it is a pretty walk and I love the Victorian houses and old limestone buildings. A few minutes further, beyond Granbury to Glen Rose, takes you to a state park with the first recorded dinosaur footprints (at least, there are enough of these footprints that scientists were able to measure stride and speed of specific types of animals). Great place for a picnic!

I believe I mentioned our spring weather? We're under a tornado watch until midnight tonight and the weather radar is showing a band of storms approaching from the west that has a core with pink and white--up into the heaviest rain levels the radar can register. This is going to be a messy storm blowing across, but at least it looks like it is running east to west. When they do the "railroad" thing, all of the parts of the storm passing along the same line so you get hit again and again, that is when flooding is more problematic. Either of these are storms you don't want to have pass over the top of Main Street. The extended outlook through next Thursday shows partly cloudy Wednesday and a few clouds on Thursday, in the high 70s. A lot can change between now and then, but at least it looks like a pleasant start to the event.

The long-range forecast is predicting nice weather for those four days--partly cloudy, up to 80 (degrees, that is, not MPH winds).

I went down to the Arts Festival this morning and spent an hour visiting with the Bauers. Very nice visit, and gorgeous pottery. If I weren't saving for a different kind of cermic soon (a half-crown for a cracked tooth) I'd be investing in art, no doubt!

Were you here for the weather on the 20th? My driveway looked like boat ramp for a while. Good thing John got out "while the getting was good!" We are now officially finished with the drought, the lakes are back up to their normal levels.
