Now that I'm retired, I won't be working this Christmas. It's going to seem kind of strange. And for those of you who do have to work, especially the emergency people - hopefully I won't need you, but thanks for being there, anyway. I hope your Christmas will be quiet, and have a merry one.

When I was a child Christmas was not made a fuss of in Scotland. If you were religeous(even if you wern't) you went to a midnight mass or watchnight service on Christmas eve. Christmas day even had one postal delivery I lost count of the number of wee boys who tried out their trusty new sixshooter on my dad, he would always stager round and drop to the ground a la the best western fashion :).

To all those who work Christmas and New Year Thank you and may you be safe.

more thanks here - especially to emergency services, & public transport workers. I intend not to need the first lot, but would not be able to get to lunch at JennyO's place without the second lot!

I used to love working Xmas day. It was a slow day at double time rate. What can beat that?

Mack, that's why I'm here at work this morning. I'll be spending the afternoon with my family but it's nice and quiet here now and I can get loads done. And double time doesn't suck!

Well, I'm pleased not to be working Christmas Day this year, even at double time. However, a lot of my colleagues will be working at UK airports because the airport authorities and the airlines like to make that bit of extra money, even on such an important Christian festival as Christmas day - aren't we supposed to be a Christian country after all? Bet the directors and senior managers are at home celebrating with their families whilst the poor old workers are keeping the wheels oiled as per usual. And next year, I could well be one of them if the roster throws up my number!! Ah well, I shall enjoy today in the bosom of my family and worry about next year when it comes around. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone.

It's quite small in the Grand Scheme of things, but I just spent almost 3 hours prepping frozen pizza dough for tomorrow. I didn't mind really, not much else to do. Home alone as usual.

My father was a clergyman, and even after he retired he still did lots of assistant work. The Advent and Christmas period always seemed extra busy, not entirely because of the extra service and music, but because of the extra seasonal counselling, charity, and homecare work. He worked tirelessly for others and by St. Stephen's Day he was bushed, though fulfilled. There was no doubt to the family that he was on the job and working, some of it we were also heavily involved with, but since it was the only life we knew, we didn't know any different. The luxury of not working at Christmas is something we have treasured because our father never had it off entirely.

Being self-employed, I give myself the school holidays so that there's more time with the kids and wife, more time to visit, and more time to recharge my personal batteries. It costs me money, but I'll never get rich teaching private music lessons anyway, and I'd be poorer by loosing the time with family.

To those folks clearing the snow, tending the police, fire, coastguard, and ambulance stations, in the armed forces, in the hospitals, and everything else, I have the highest admiration and respect for. Merry Christmas.

Peace, Mooh.

It's not Christmas Day anymore, but it's one of the two days after the holiday Hardi which traditionally tries to take as time off, and it's also our 15th anniversary. Tray glam-- I just got the ignored dishes loaded in the DW and I have some laundry to run because Hardi's out visiting a failing patient at a nursing home. He agreed to "pastor" her several years ago when she was moved here from somewhere else; she was without a local priest unless he signed up. Well, he's gone to see her regularly, and they just called to say, "It's time soon," so......

It's hard for people to understand why this doesn't piss me off, but I love our life and I fully support his emergency absences. Like Carmela Soprano says to Tony when he's about to lam outta town for a couple of days on the quick, "I know the drill."

Well, that's it... we've logged nearly 3,000 accounts this week, averaging a thousand a day between a maximum of 10 people. I'm not looking forward to next week, when we have to capture them all!

Tax returns may not be as important as fire, ambulance or police crews, but we have our place in the world. Our logging these returns now, means that 3,000 people won't get threatening letters in the post next month.

Happy New Year folks.

LTS - who is out of here and back to a house full of crap that has to be shifted before Monday!

Dave...I'd love to take you up on the pizza...but free delivery? Well, OK, no delivery charges but there will be the standard S&H stuff.

first thing I heard this morning before I turned on the radio & made brekkie was a plane flying off to somewhere.

Today I'll be catching several buses & maybe a taxi. Living in Sydney's entertainment/accomodation/backpackers centre I know lots of shops will be open. I wonder if the Video shop will be open as it was a few years ago, along with the usual food & small grocery shops.

& I still don't intend to use emergency services!

I should have been on nights on Christmas eve and Chtristmas day but I told them if I did not go to bed on Christmas eve Santa would not bring me any pressies - so they ley me take my night shifts off:-)

I am working days on the 30th and 31st and nights on the 1st and 2nd so it works quite well - I can still go to a new years eve party!

Cheers and thanks to those who do a REAL job (unlike me;-) )
