Subject: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: katlaughing Date: 01 Jul 08 - 10:38 AM Previous thread is HERE. Please post your exercise and other personal goals as they are related to your overall fitness, and, remember, we are focussing on when we are successful with a goal, though it is fine to post for support, etc. when needed.:-) My goals: Treadmill - 10-20 minutes per day Qi Gong - 2-3 times per week Hand Weights - 4-5 times per week Mini-Trampoline - 5 minutes per day to start with Today: T-6 (I am pleased. Yesterday the sharp edge of a very heavy piece of equipment fell right across the top of my foot. I wasn't sure I'd be able to walk today. RICE did the trick along with some Chinese tincture. My foot is sore, but not swollen and no problem walking!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: LilyFestre Date: 01 Jul 08 - 11:01 AM Goals for this month: 1. Getting to the gym at least twice a week for strength training with my personal trainer. 2. Yoga: 3 times a week, always once for Power Yoga 3. Kayaking: Minimum of once a week, more time on rivers paddling upstream. 4. Archery: Use the recurve bow a few times a week just for the fun of it and to help tone my upper arms. 5. Be active every day whether it's a scheduled thing like the gym or the yoga studio....might include swimming, biking, walking, DVDs at home...whatever...just keep moving! Michelle who is off to the gym and then a new yoga class |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! A great workout! |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 01 Jul 08 - 01:50 PM My sort of goal was to lose and keep off half a stone (English half stone, 7lbs) in weight. Turns out that not only have I not lost it, it's gained another half a stone to be its friend. It's so disheartening when you've been trying really hard not to eat the wrong things and it all ends up apple shaped (it would be pear shaped but the middle is rounding out)... I'm sort of hoping there's a medical reason for it... having some blood tests tomorrow due to an abnormal result in my last lot in May. I'm not a happy bunny. LTS |

I can pinpoint exactly why I might not lose for a week or even add some on...it all has to do with what little "extra" I might have eaten and/or whether I walked for it or not!:-) T-5 - so total for the day of 11 |

Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: GUEST,John Gray in Oz Date: 04 Jul 08 - 07:36 PM Good luck all of you. I had the self discipline to give up smoking, about 20 small cigars a day, and moderate/heavy drinking problem ( a bottle of scotch and gin per week plus a few beers in between ) but do you think I can find some to loose weight - no bloody way. So - I've made an appointment with a surgeon to see if I'm suitable for having a lapband fitted. A female friend with one has lost 35 kg in 18 months ( 77 lbs ). $15,000 Oz dollars ( approx USD $17,000 ). My private health cover will pick up $11,000 of that. The good points are, that they are adjustable from outside the body and that the operation is reversible. Another critical factor is that my Type II diabetes will begin to dissipate, almost from day 1 and, over time, be erradicated altogether. The down side is that I'll be able to bring home the weeks food supply in a shoe box. In restaurants its entree size only. If they give me the nod for this op I'll let you know how I go. JG / FME |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: katlaughing Date: 05 Jul 08 - 12:58 AM Good luck to you, JOhn and congrats on letting go of the cigars and drinks. My Rog had his last ciggie about four months ago and has now got a belly, though not too bad. I am encouraging him to give a few things, i.e. white bread and I think he could easily lose about 10-15 lbs. I still have a lot more to go, but it is going, slowly.:-) I had some other walking to post today. |

Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Jul 08 - 03:40 AM A bit of encouraging news today.... I've lost 4lbs since last week. BUT.... the discouraging news is that it is looking more and more like I lost it due to a health problem. I had an abnormal liver function test back last month, which resulted in more tests last week and this. The biggest contenders are one of the Hepatitis strains or coelliac disease. I'm still confused as to why I haven't shown any other symptoms before... I'm not yellow, I'm not losing weight - in fact, I've gained it - I'm not overly fatigued, although there are odd days that I put down to me only sleeping 5-6 hours a night.... I'm not having mood swings or stomach pains... Ho hum. Maybe the ultrasound scan on Friday will confirm what it is. I think my goal this week is to remain sensible and sane and not start fearing the worst. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: katlaughing Date: 17 Jul 08 - 10:17 PM Well I was all discombobulated(sp) this morning as I had to take my Rog to the doc after a night of no sleep. He'll be fine...bronchitis is hanging on. Anyway...I didn't get anything done, today, though I did happen upon an ad for a personal trainer/certified nutritionist. I called her and will be meeting with her after next week. We will make out a plan for reasonable, doable exercise and more on what I am eating. That feels good! |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: GUEST,LTS pretending to work Date: 18 Jul 08 - 04:34 AM That's bad news about Rog, but good news about the nutritionist. I'm still decreasing slowly, due to panic pooping... but I called my doctor to accountability this morning. He told me yesterday (Thursday) that they hadn't had the results and to ring back next Wednesday, so today I phoned the people who actually did the scan. Turns out they faxed the results to the doc on Wednesday THIS week, the day before I called. So now I have an appointment for Monday morning and I'll hopefully find out what's going on. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: LilyFestre Date: 21 Jul 08 - 08:11 AM July 20, 2008: 8 Mile kayak adventure, white water included WOO HOO! LTS, I don't include those things in my normal life very often, when I do have rice, it's brown rice and maybe a cup of it per month. I occassionally have a tortilla wrap or pasta but then they are whole wheat. It took my body a week or two to get used to this adjustment and it sent me some pretty powerful cravings but now it's not a big deal. About sugar....it's everywhere. You can use sugar substitutes but keep in mind that unless you are eating protein, your body turns everything into sugar. Watch for products that say sugar free instead of no sugar added as many foods we eat have natural sugar (of course fruit)...one that surprised me was milk. Even yogurt with a sugar substitute has a fairly high amount of sugar in it due to the milk. Look up diabetic recipes to help you out and give you more hints about lowering your sugar intake. Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: GUEST,LTS pretending to work Date: 21 Jul 08 - 11:20 AM Thanks guys. It's a big change to my life again... as a family we eat a whole lot of rice and pasta - and as a family we spend an awful lot of money on food. Paying extra for the brown stuff isn't always an option when I can get white rice and pasta in bulk for half the price. The annoying thing is, my diet isn't all that high in fat anyway. so I could do with less sugar, but when it gets added to everything without your knowledge, it's very very difficult to keep a tight control and stay within a family budget. The price of food and fuel has rocketed but our wages haven't. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: katlaughing Date: 21 Jul 08 - 12:16 PM We have the same problem with salt; it is added to EVERYTHING. There are foods which are salt free. We buy tomato puree and make our own pasta sauce, salt-free, as we do with a lot of other things. Think whole foods, i.e. oatmeal, shredded wheat, etc. what about vegetable pastas, can you have those? |

Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: jacqui.c Date: 21 Jul 08 - 03:51 PM Liz I'm on similar dietary restrictions - when doing rice or pasta for Kendall I'll do veggies such as broad beans for me. The only way to really cut the sugar is to prepare meals from scratch - it's harder, particularly when you are working, but you can monitor exactly what goes into your food. |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 Jul 08 - 04:18 PM I mostly do that anyway.... trouble is, there are vegetables that only I like, some that only Manitas likes and some that only Limpit and I like... we all have carrots, sweetcorn, green beans, brocolli and potatoes in common. Life gets a bit boring after that. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: LilyFestre Date: 21 Jul 08 - 04:42 PM Do you have a given range of amount of sugar that is okay for you to have? Meals don't have to be boring at all, herbs can alter the flavor intensely and now is the season for fresh....get it while you can, freeze any extras if you can...it really does ease the boredom, which can happen to anyone if they eat the same things over and over and over. I hear you about the groceries, they are ridiculous here too. DH and I have huge gardens this year, are canning/freezing lots and raising chickens (eggs/meat) and pigs for butchering. We do the chickens but the pigs go to the butcher. I know it's not the life for everyone but I love the gardening and animals...there's a certain satisfaction that goes along with it...not to mention WORK. :) Anyway, I'm off on a tangent....any idea how much sugar is ok? Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: katlaughing Date: 21 Jul 08 - 05:48 PM My acupuncturist has just told me to reduce all grains and fruits, even give them up for a short spell. I've got too many carbs going on. I am to do mostly dark green leafy stuff (have to watch the coumadin levels) and some smaller amts. of other veggies; protein 3X per day in amts. no larger then my palm; 1/4 cup nuts and seeds for snacks as well as cottage cheese and low fat yoghurt, whey or soy protein shakes. Berries are okay. OH! And, I can have a small piece of 70% dark chocolate! Everything in moderation except the greens.:-) So, I will be changing from rice milk to almond milk; make my breakfast smoothie with blueberries only, leaving out the 1/4 banana and 3 figs and the slice of raisin Ezekiel bread. Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: GUEST,pattyClink Date: 25 Jul 08 - 09:30 PM Hi Liz, sorry you are having such a hard time of it. I was just checking in to get some inspiration from this little band, and saw it was rough going. I have managed to get 24 lbs off since January (what is that, 4 stone?). Its now very slow going at this juncture but that's probably due to backsliding. We have done very well with a low-carb program at our house, after reading in Gary Taubes book about how these days we are just getting WAY too many carbohydrates. Our poor bodies think it is perpetual harvest time and they are busily packing away stores for winter. The low-fat plans just seem to make it harder on a lot of us. Anyway, as far as nitty-gritty ideas, we are trying to build meals like this: breakfasts are either a serving of meat (butcher-made sausage or leftover ham) and high-fiber low-carb toast (actually tastes like normal whole wheat); or a round of sugar-free yogurt with fruit and Fiber One and maybe a few nuts (we call this dish Nuts and Twigs) Lunches are salads or low-carb sandwiches or wraps, with veggie sticks dipped in ranch dressing or whatever, maybe a small tomato. Fruit we limit to only berries or melons, they are bona fide low-carb. Dinners we do normal meats, with a salad in summer or homemade soup in the winter; and a non-starchy vegetable like broccoli, squash, greens, carrots, okra, ratatouille. A good reliable is steamed broccoli and sliced carrots, buttered with lemon-pepper. And we've expanded our repertoire of dinner salads. For pasta craving, we either use a tiny amount in a casserole or have found ways to work shredded zucchini or chopped sauteed summer squash into the dishes we used to use pasta in, I'll post a recipe if anybody cares. Started making homemade bran crackers to go with cheese; snacks need to be cheese and nuts mostly, and there are a few low-carb granola bars and fiber cookies out there, hard to find. Sugar free yogurts and ice-creams and jellos when necessary, and berries and whipped cream are legal. Anyway, whatever you do, hang in there and hope things start breaking your way in a hurry. |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Jul 08 - 12:52 AM I've done a bit of walking the past two days with Micca here. It's been a hoot. Liz, my acupuncturist gave me a great list to go by which cuts down on certain kinds of carbs and allows a small piece of 70% dark chocolate per day. If you PM me your email addy, I'll send you a scan of it to print out. I am finding it quite helpful...no grains or fruit, except for berries, for awhile, then I can add in tiny bits, but you could adapt it easily, I think. |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Jul 08 - 11:29 PM Must be doing more physical walking, etc. than I thought, as I have dropped a couple of pounds; side effect is my foot hurts like hell and I've had it up on a chair a lot of today!:-( |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 27 Jul 08 - 04:21 PM Patty, sorry to make it sound so little, but in the UK 28lbs is only 2 stones (14lbs to the stone, 16 oz to the lb). I've been so damned tired this last few days... don't know whether it's a by-product of the change in diet, the change in excercise or a sypmtom of what I've got (Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease or NAFLD) but it's a complete pain in the ass when I get home from work and miss my favourite programme because I've fallen asleep in the chair. Thank heaven for digital box recording is all I can say! Bit more walking today, lots more walking next weekend. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: maire-aine Date: 27 Jul 08 - 07:10 PM I finally can say that I'm permanently below 200. I was stuck around 205 for the longest time. That makes the total loss so far at almost 50 lbs. It seems like I lose weight better in the summer than winter. My diet has been based on counting carbs; 45g for breakfast, 60g for lunch, 45g for supper, and 30g for an evening snack. Breakfast is usually oatmeal with 1t brown sugar & 2 T sugar-free maple syrup & a little bit of real butter. Lunch is the big meal of the day, usually a Stouffer's frozen entree, because I'm not much of a cook. Supper is a big salad with turkey (or ham) and cheese (and hard-boiled egg, if I've planned ahead). And then I can have something before bed. If my cat wakes me up too early in the morning, I can have a sugar-free yogurt. With the improved nutrition labels on things, and a website called calorieking.com, it's a lot easier to stick to. Regards, Maryanne |
Subject: RE: BS: Accountability goals - 7th month-wow! From: maire-aine Date: 27 Jul 08 - 07:22 PM A note about chocolate: my favorite is Ghirardelli Intense Dark Citrus Sunset (60% cacao) with orange bits and caramel crunch. According to the label on the back, 3 squares = 21g of carbs. I can usually settle for 2 squares, which only cost me 14g. And actually, according to the dietician at the hospital (my doctor sent me to a nutrition class), you can subtract the "dietary fiber" carbs to bring the total down even further. So I can squeeze in some, a couple times a week. Maryanne |
