New thread for exercise goals, etc. for the month of August. I don't have much to report at the moment as I've hurt my foot, but I hope to be back at it, soon. Have fun!

Hi Kat, Hope foot injury not too serious.

I am back home to the IOW tomorrow for my son's wedding on Saturday. Then to Bideford Folk Festival on the Sunday. The town is about 30min walk from camp site, I may not walk back at night but hope (weather permitting) to walk into town each day.

Thanks, Jillie. Soft tissue damage which hurts like a son-of-a-gun BUT is much better! Just takes time. So...I am going on a two week sabbatical, here at home. I'll be a bit scarce for the non. Keep up the good work, folks!

Just back from a long weekend in Munich, Germany, where I walked for flipping miles in hot sun!

However.... the scales tell me that the German diet of strudel, fresh rolls and sausage, is not good for me. The housebrick sized slice of lasagne I had in Salzburg didn't help either. I have 4lbs to lose again, plus another 3lbs that they've found behind the sofa.

Ho hum.... this means WAR! I'm off to join a friend at her slimming club tomorrow.

I blame MudGuard's Krummelkuchen... it's incredible and entirely edible and came in cherry or apricot.... mmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Back on the yoghurt and bird food today. I may even make it to dressed by midday, but I'm cutting it fine.....

Bert, I lost three pounds when he was here, too! But, I also ate a lot...maybe it was the type of food? LOL!

Liz, good for you. I decided I have to get back to tracking what I eat, so I went back to www.sparkpeople.com and filled in my nutrition log for today.

Becca, that's great! According to my doc's scales, I have lost a total of 21, but I think since I last saw him, last week, I have added 1 or 2 at least.

Tomorrow I am calling a gal who does personal training and nutrition.

Thanks, folks!

WHEW! I am glad to see this thread! I thought about starting it but decided this was Kat's idea and if she wanted to keep it up, she would. I've had a busy August. Here goes:

8/1: 2 hours of yoga

8/2: 3 hours of yoga & 3 hours of kayaking (I was on a yoga and kayaking adventure August 1-3)

8/3: 20 minutes of Qigong just as the sun was peeking out and then a 3 hour paddle (rough water/strong headwinds...but FUN), small amount of hiking and breakfast on the Appalachian Trail

8/5: 60 Minutes Yoga

8/8: 60 Minutes Yoga

8/11: 60 Minutes Yoga (Power Vinyasa)

8/12: 60 Minutes Yoga (On the Ball)

8/14: 60 Minutes Yoga and a new pedometer today so I'll be tracking steps starting tomorrow.

Strength training to resume next week!

Michelle

I suppose I should get back to the Pilates, if only to strengthen my shoulder muscles - I laid off it last year when I acquired a frozen shoulder and any movement was screaming, burning agony. I did the pyshio and it's about 98% fine now, but I forgot to take up the Pilates again. It would be useful to resume to try and get that remaining 2% back and get the rest of my muscles going.

Thinks: If I did it whilst eating a chocolate substitute, would it be Pilates of the carob bean?

I'll get me coat.

In the meantime, I have rediscovered a liking for the occasional plum.

Counting the positives...I'm digging on that. How's this?

Last year at this time I was taking insulin twice a day, was morbidly obese (still have a ways to go but I am no longer int he morbidly obese category...not by a stretch!)and had yet to be introduced to parts of my body.

Just today I received the results of some lab work I had done. My A1C (3 month average of blood sugar readings) was significantly into the healthy zone which means I am doing just fine without the insulin. My cholesterol levels are within the healthy range! My triglycerides are still a little high but not like before when I was 250 points above the healthy range.
I have made friends with my body over this past year. I have visible collar bones which I have been wanting to have for what seems like forever, I have felt my hip bones (far from seeing them....but I don't want that anyway!) and I now know about my sternum. The first time I saw it poking up (I was laying in bed), I thought it was a tumor!!! NO KIDDING!

My God, my body has changed SO MUCH and I am lost in happy tears of thankfulness.....I just had to share.

I NEED A HUG!!!!!! DAAAMMMMITT!!!

Thanks Guys!

I do Weight Watchers. I find it to be a healthy, well balanced plan that easily fits my life. So, Weight Watchers (I've done both Flex and Core, right now I'm back to Flex) & some kind of body movement almost every day. For me, I love yoga, kayaking, walking and biking. I also do strength training with an awesome trainer who keeps things hopping by never doing the same routines twice...she likes to shake things up and while I don't always love it, I ALWAYS love how I feel afterwards. Things that work for me include doing things I love (otherwise I know it won't last long), maintaining a blog of thoughts, happenings and activities logs, having the support of friends and family, and being patient with myself. I am enjoying this adventure as much as possible as I only intend to pass this way once!

Michelle :)

I've been informed that pootling around the shops for an hour does not count towards my 'walking for 15 mins'... I'm annoyed and relieved. Annoyed that I have to find another way of walking for 15 mins, and relieved that my purse will remain at its' present weight!

Well done Michelle, support is a great help.

LilyFestre,
I just read your post of the 15th! WOW! SO proud of you, that is a very big deal! Congratulations!

Liz,
I don't know what 'pootling' involves, but once I wore a pedometer through a couple hours of browsing and searching in big-box stores and part of a mall, and it was 12,000 steps. Which certainly COUNTS! We have ton of people who mall-walk around here, they window-shop and keep moving.
Did you make up 'pootling' or is that a real word? I love it.

As for me, doing okay, weight plateaus and then drops 1 or 2 if I remain 'good'. Gotta get in more walks in a week. Back exercises starting to pay off.

I just watched and started on This new exercise routine, BUT it is far from just for beginners! I could feel the "burn" as soon as I started, but it was a no go when he wanted me face down on the floor. I will have to modify this to do it on the bed where I know I can get up, easily. Our bed is a select comfort type so I can make it as hard as the floor. I KNOW this exercise will help and it fits in better with what a physical therapist recommended for me when she diagnosed me as hypermobile. About ten minutes, today...it's a start back on track.

'pootling' - to pootle or wander aimlessly around at a sedate pace, carefully gauged to annoy people who walk fast or have long legs.

I don't know where it came from really, but I liked it and adopted it as my own.

It goes with fossicking - to mess about, to rootle round as in a bag of potatoes to try to locate the carrot, and not actually achieve anything useful.

Rootle - to rumage pointlessly in a bag or box, making the maximum of effort to get to the very bottom corners in order to get nothing much at all.

Apparently it only counts as excercise if you get breathless and sweaty. I do that watching Sean Connery films so that's what I'm off to do now.

Got a crate full of fruit and veggies to take camping with me, and hopefully some good friends who will discourage me from licking chip wrappers and sucking on kids lollies.

I put on my other shoes for the first time in about two months and went to the store with Rog. I pushed the cart and walked the aisles and really felt it in all parts of my bawd...not quite limped to the car. Put on my regular shoes and felt more "movable" by the time we got home. It's a start in getting back to where I was; I haven't gone to the shops or anywhere else where I walk, in about a month. Things are getting better!

I had been wearing the same huge men's shirts bought when I needed them, because they were comfy, all cotton, and expensive. Alone, or open over shells.

Camping, we buy exclusively Goodwill. I'm surprisingly able to fend off skeeters now, so evening outdoor sitting is a new toy, even IF cold.... At Goodwill, a men's size MUCH smaller looked good enough to wear for the upcoming cold evening, long-sleeve.... Hardi said, when I put it on, it fit perfectly and was CUTE. Now I can't seem to stop wearing it. I got a lot svelter than I knew! Time to check the scale and measurements again to mark a new baseline. I mean, I do not know this woman, but I need to get to know her ASAP. She fits into one mirror, for one thing. When was the last time THAT was true?!?

And all without focusing on diet or weight loss at all. Just having too much FUN. And eating constantly. Hardi makes me do it. Every 2 hours. When the rest of the world is stuffed from lunch, I'm eating the 2nd half of mine. The total and content are the same as anyone else ate, but without splitting it in half or thirds, it's instant pounds on (instead of instant pounds off).

This has been accompanied by many spontaneous, visceral memories of my very active 20's, 30's and early 40's. It would seem that ability is coming back, as well.

~S~

Positive: Weight Watchers friend had us over for dinner tonight...food was YUMMY and healthy...it was nice to go somewhere where others are health conscious too. :)

Added Bonus: I was able to share the clothes that are now too big for me. I know they will be put to good use and appreciated....too bad she just needs the one size larger than mine as I have clothing that range in sizes that are only one size too large to 5 sizes too large....and they have been taking over my closet! Until today, that is. I spent this morning taking out everything that was just too big and now have five piles that are 3 feet high! Only one more rack to go and probably I should go through my sweaters too. I beleive, I have enough folks interested to have a plus-sized winter coat swap...I can't be the only person who has winter coats that are too big!!!

I don't know if I eat every 2 hours but I eat frequently too. The idea, at least for me, is that I try to eat BEFORE I get hungry...or perhaps it's that I don't get hungry because I keep a steady stream of fuel going in. Some days it's more than others depending upon the activity going on.....power yoga days or strength training days require a little bit more for me or my blood sugar takes a nose dive. Low blood sugar sun salutations are no fun!!!

So Jillie, yep....are you the one doing WW? I forget who else it was...but this works beautifully with the plan, whether it be Core or Flex. :)

Immeduiately after eating, one's metabolism rises temporarily to digest what has been eaten. It's called "thermogenesis." We all do it. (It's helpful to harness it.)

That means that if you get the amounts right, and the time frame right, you not only get a constant-fuel state and are never really very hungry (unless you've exercised your buns off), you ALSO burn not only what you ate, but a bit more. You burn off weight most efficiently when you can balance all of that.

It does not compute for food addicts, but if the weight did not come on as a result of addiction, it can come off with a few scientific tweaks. Absent addiction, what is hard is not doing it but learning enough about it to make it work in your favor.

The ideal mini-meal components as explained to me long ago by a diabetic friend are: a fruit, a carb, and a protein. Always. ALWAYS. The fruit will start to burn first, and then the carb will kick in, and the protein will keep it all burning slow and steady. Amounts, picture a half a tennis ball (or half a pingpong ball) for each component and adjust as needed for activity level-- for example more carb for more activity, less fruit if it's a concentrate like jam or juice, etc. Again, the trick is to balance them correctly to one's activity level and food preferences.

It's not well known, but (absent food addiction) it is not a practical necessity to undergo gastric bypass in order to reduce meal sizes significantly. One can study the nearest bariatric program, see what they are doing and eating, and simply emulate it.

The change is mental-- eat to live instead of live to eat, and eat what is needed for the actual situation at hand-- remembering always that if one is hungry in ten minutes or 2 hours, one can always eat another mini-meal.

Treating food like an enemy only reinforces the "power" the food has. We're so much smarter than that, really. The more likely real culprit-- the rationale for this thread, right?-- is the activity level. When I am doing the workouts I LIKE to do, I can easily burn 3000 calories a day, eating as much ice cream as my digestion will allow.

All this of course does not fit popular cultural ideas about food, but, "Who's shrinking?" I reply, "and who ain't?"

It's helpful to harness it. Exercise done during thermogenesis will burn more calories than exercise done at other times.

That means that if you get the amounts right, and the time frame right, and the right amount/duration of exercise-- you not only get a constant-fuel state and are never really very hungry (unless you've exercised your buns off), you ALSO burn not only most of what you ate, but a bit more.

You burn off weight most efficiently when you can balance all of that.

So-- the mini-meals alternating with activity WORK, powerfully and pretty painlessly. :~)
