Subject: Maybe Song Ssn Stoke N Kent Sun 28 Dec?
From: Richard Bridge
Date: 18 Oct 08 - 01:35 PM

This is to see how many people might be interested in an afternoon song session in the Nags Head Lower Stoke ME3 9RD (UK) on Sunday the 28th December - might become a monthly session at least till the festival season starts.

The original pub on this site is mentioned in Hogarth's diaries but this building is late 1800s. Wood floor, good acoustics. Plenty parking - pub carpark and public carpark (free) immediately over the road. Public transport not a useful option but believe there might be a bus from Chatham that takes well over an hour 'cos it goes through all the villages on the peninsular and runs on the 32nd of months with a "Q" in the name. No football on the TV that Sunday.

I count 18 suitable session seats/stools for people swinging guitars or other instruments, and a good amount of other space/benches.

Landlord offering to put some real beer on - the previous incumbents let the beer engines and pipes go to rack and ruin so it is likely to be a small barrel or couple of large boxes served under gravity. It's a Sheps pub but he may be allowed/able to have non-Sheps guest beer. Probably some food like roast spuds or something too.

I think the plan is really to run afternoon, but if enough people want to play on into the evening I don't think there would be any objection.

It is a matter of whether we would reach critical mass - if not enough people are going to want to do it it will not happen 'cos it's not worth doing if only three or four people turn up, but my guess is that by then people will be going stir-crazy from Xmas and gagging to get out and folk!

Richard This will gladden your heart I'm sure. TDL are up for this, maybe even a cub or two. Have to check it out. If this one is half as much fun as the Ship sessions it should be brilliant !

Great news, Richard!

Ruff 'n' Reddy'll be there. You've already got more than three or four people; and in the twinkling of an eye!

I'm delighted to say the Graham Anstee, Bishop Gundulfs Morriss's banjo player has also indicated his intention to attend - I'm sure his stuff will please the audient.

NB it being a Sunday and Monday being workday I will NOT be offering overnight accommodation, we will not go back to my house and carry on until 3 am, and I will NOT be providing compulsory chili vegetable stoo.

Sue and Tony Urwin from BG will also come. Tony does not often sing but Sue does some very nice Geordie songs - she is from up there.

Will try to make it, as you so rightly say people will have had enough of Xmas Fayre and a return to some form of normality will be good. I might even do a new song or two

Chris and I can probably make it. We might be knackered. Christmas eve and day and all or part of boxing day in Sratford upon Avon. Still we plan to be there.

I'd love to venture into the deep wilds of Stoke after the Christmas mayhem. Anybody from my area going? I will pay for petrol!
Eye of a fish or dipping debs maybe

Well, Woodsie, aren't the pride of leopards near you, and if my memory serves me that clatter-on they ride is a 5-seater with a huge boot for guitars...

We might be able to squeeze Woodsie in, depends on how many turkey kebabs he'll have had over the festive season.

A huge boot for guitars!
That would depend on how well they were played, and on how big the player was.

Are the ferrets good workers? If so they might get stolen. I'm not sure the landlord lets them in the pub, I haven't seen any dogs in there for a while, in fact since the last tenant left.

I'll try to find out if I get a mo.

I have spoken to the pub and sorry Romany Man but Treacle and Obvious cannot come into the pub - the landlord's staff bitch will try to eat anything else with fur on and usually succeeds.

He is now proposing that I venture nearly a mile down the road from Upper Coke to visit said establishment.

The current tenant does not approve of mind-altering chemicals (save for licensed alcohol) and despite the tattoos is (apart from the accent) quite a reasonable bloke. He is finding Lower Coke harder going than the back streets of Strood (!) He wants to run a business but does not want excessive disorder.

As for the eye - the yoof wot did it apparently has been saying "Oh shit what did I do" and wishes to pour oil on troubled waters but does not know what to say. I suspect his father who knows of my profession and abilities to be influencing him! The appearance of the eye is only mildly alarming now - but one of the others in the fracas has a fractured cheek bone. No, I didn't do it.

Others in pub say "He only dares to do it to old men" which is mildly annoying.

Oddly, since I ran out of the pub door streaming blood after said yooof yelling "You are a dead man" local people seem
(a) to regard my street cred as enhanced and
(b) to buy me drinks.

Funny that. I would not use my influence with villains I have helped in this scenario, by way of payback.

Would I?

Actually DH... The plan is to move to Rochester or near vicinity when Chris retires. 7 years to go. Well, that is if I can get a comparable job to the one I currently hold.

In the meantime, we will visit as often as possible and not just because of the highly entertaining reports of Mr. Bridge's experiences. (Did he really get into bar brawl?)

Looking out from Rochester over the Medway, reminds me of the James River in parts of Virginia. Kent on the whole reminds me of central and south east Virginia. It feels like home in more ways than just geology. Can't explain it. Love the folk too, the folkie folk.

Parts of Rochester are very pricey (mostly the parts with the nice buildings of which there are quite a lot) but you need to like cathedral bells! Regrettably it has a conservative club.

The parts anywhere near Aaron Stone's nightclub and casino are dangerous after dark and frequently feature on the programs about the police dealing with doobed-up drunks. In fact, if you have one of the nice vertical houses on the High Street, secure your front door at night like Fort Knox, and someone from the night club will still have pissed in your letterbox in the morning.

Chatham is the pits (but there are some nice buildings ont he outskirts) and St Mary's Island glows in the dark and the roses grown there have walk (I'm not joking) on parts in "Alien". Some of thehouses on Madstone Road are nice - but on a main-ish road and pricey.

Strood is best described in Paul Carr (folksinger54)'s song

"My living nightmare I'm in Strood again"

It is without redemption apart from the largely unused temple of the Knight's Templar - alas in the middle of an industrial estate. But it is cheap.

On the peninsular, avoid Chattenden and Hoo like the plague. High Halstow alas got "developed". The pb, the Dead (sorry, Red) Dog now tries to be a (bad) restaurant but the building is nice. Cliffe Woods is mostly 30s to 80s developments. Without charm.

Old Cliffe would be nice - but for a huge council estate so now it is the land where men are men and sheep are nervous. The sheep may be brighter than some of the inbreds. It has a biker pub, the Evening Star.

Cooling has a nice church, a nice (alas converted) rectory, and of course Jools Holland. Otherwise agricultural underclass.

Spendiff has charm and prices, and you need to drive round in ever-diminishing cirles from Cooling to get there.

Upper Dogsbottom (oops, Stoke), where Dilligaff lives, and Kev the gopher (sorry, Clogs) visits, could be nice if one of the parents of the people who live there had taught their children how to speak. It has a proper village pub (White Horse) at least until the landlord can sell it for housing and retire. There is one very nice farmhouse.

Middle Stoke is bleaahh.

Lower Coke could have been nice until the council filled it with sink estates in the 60s. I like it as a mixed village. Prices are low low low but check addresses with me!

All Hallows has a nice church, and a pub that I fear is beyond redemption - and more council and similar housing.

All Hallows on Sea is mostly trailer park and similar - and a chalet holiday camp. Lots of people with tattoos and large outboard motors - on a flat sea with 4 100 horse mercs you can be in Amsterdam intwo hours. Nuff said?

That leaves Grain. St James's Church is nice, and the Hogarth Arms would be, apart from the denizens. It has more explosives per square foor (gas hortonspheres and oil tanks) per square foot than any other part of the UK, is only a small overshoot from a Navy firing range, and was developed to house workers from the now defunct BP oil refinery there - ie those who could not afford a car to go home in or were too stupid to learn to drive.

That'll be because it's full of prison officers and ex-prison officers, being next door to the nick, and you may find their politics - well - a fraction retributive.

It's also about a stone's throw from (a)the M2 (within droning hearing) and (b) a truly amazing Chatham urban estate

I think Mr Curmudgeon Bridge is describing the entire country in miniature.
There are good places and there are bad places, all within a few streets of each other.
I live in a nice part of Strood, but the bad part is just a couple of streets away.
Keep visiting and you will soon find awhich is which.
Sorry to hear about your Rectal Adhesion. Quite rare in yanks, but all too common in the Scots I hear. Well known as "tight arses".
As for the SADS, it has become an English trait,(see Mr Bridge) and you will soon find yourself fitting in anywhere.
Anywhere that cricket, football or international tennis is played at any rate.

It depends on your budget. If you can afford £400,000 upwards Shorne has its charm.

Rochester, best cobmination of charm peace and price, probably WELL out on Maidstone Road Rochester (NOT Maidstone Road Chatham)

You could try Lower Higham, right out beyond the Chequers pub towards the Thames.

Or Lower Coke, lots of bangs per buck - but check the address with me first.

Have you spent much time in Oban - last time I was there it was full of scousers kicking over dustbins for fun (and education)?

Do you need to be urban for transport?

Further down the North Kent line are some good bargains - beyond Faversham.

Or maybe Wouldham etc? I think Burham is dearer.

Regrettably the nicer places to live cost more.

Nice and warm - West country. I think Totnes is still a time warp living in the 70s.

Mid-Wales (if you like rain)?

Deal?

Uurrgghhh! £400,000?    We have seen some in Rochester and Strood that are affordable.

Mr. Bridge... you are hired!

How about stumbling home distance from pub with at least twice a month folk sessions? That is first and foremost requisite. Largish lounge same for kitchen/diner (enough room to entertain at least 4 extra people). Minimum 2 bedrooms with bath on same floor as bedroom. Loft or cellar we can finish for the train set (for Chris) and craft studio (for me). In fact we don't mind doing up out of date bath, kitchen, general decor so long as not too expensive. Tiny bit of garden with at least one mature tree and parking for one car and small caravan. BTW we love church bells.

Uhhmmm! What is your fee?

Anyway thanks for the encouragement DH. I am sure when the time comes we will find something safe, lovely and affordable. We will keep checking things out in the mean time and gleaning everyone's knowledge, though I think we have already had all of RB's.

The only pub matching the requirement is the Good Intent. Alas it is in Troytown. The nearest human life is out of town from the King's School, or behind the Watts Almshouses - an area of outstanding natural property values. But I think there may be some small squares in that area with unrestored houses that might fit your bill (probably no trees).

Try Ridley Road, The Close, Watts Ave, Roebuck Rd, King Edward Rd, Ahbert Rd, Albany Rd, Baker St. I thnk most of the houses will be too big. The cloisters, love lane, etc are nice but very dear.

Don't take Dead Horse seriously, there is no nice part of Strood. There are also no folk sessions in Strood.

How about Lower Rainham? I think there are still some sessions there.

You could always find some place WAY out in the sticks where no sane person would venture to go,
right next door to two pubs that are magnets for the socially and mentally deprived.
Then you could invite all your favourite folkies round once in a while to view the Asbo's waiting
on street corners/derelict bus shelters/car parks etc.
You could make the offer seem more attractive by providing sleeping space on floor and supplying
the obligatory minced meat & pasta stew for overnighters.
Wait, this all sounds so familiar.
Where have I heard all this before..........
It'll come to me in time :-)

oh expired equine is so negative, probably comes from political bias and leanings toward disposing of those with a different way of life, needs, social standing, (see travelling laws and stopping rights) sadly kent is slowly being concreted over, up here on the edges, 10 mins to dartford tunnel, only a small area is now left to green space, seeda plans show concrete all along the thames and medway corridor to dover from london, however there are some lovely places, sadly only those with buckets of cash can afford them, i have been trying for six years to get a place for me trailer and horses all to no avail, should i get loadsa money i would have no prob giving the right man the custoary back hander and be in straight away, my advice is keep looking, we all have different views on where is nice and we could be happy, me id be happy in the field at knockholt, mud and all.

Snerk! I gather DH is commenting upon RB's digs as well as its position.

I did live way out in BFE (bum fuk egypt aka Fluvanna County Virginia) once upon a time and absolutely loved it. Being stranded for days due to blizards, ice storms, floods, power outages, COWS!. Was lovely. We had two fireplaces and a woodstove so made it nice and cozy save for the 3 bored children and one spawn of satan (now ex) spouse.

I figured we could not afford a little house out in the boondocks in the UK. Thought they were considered prime real estate. I would be willing to risk life and limb (everyone else's included) and Chris' sanity and learn to drive in UK for a house out in the country. Then we would not need to be within walking distance of pub. Chris could drink and I will drive. Actually I was quite a good driver in US, if bit of a speed demon. I just hate how narrow the roads are here.

Where was I???? Ummm How did I get here? Sorry, neuron derailment. I would also love Watts Avenue, but sure we cannot afford it.

I have purchased a brand spanking new Boston flatback Mandolin and had now,t but trouble with it. The E string keeps breaking. Its broke in the shop when the chap tuned it and he restrung it and it was fine.

By the time I got to Crayford it was outa tune because I had been learning two fingered chords all night on new strings so a friend tuned it for me and woo and behold it broke again. so I did not play Mandolin at Crayford at all.
I fear I may have to take the plate off and file down the string loop hooks? Or shall I wait for a Mandolin Knockholt workshop or give it to the ferrets to sort out? Second hand ?brand new Problems Problems Problems,

Pubic transport to Lower Coke is not. I think there might be a bus once a fortnight from Catam (the home of the catamites) bus station, and Catam bus station is not too far from Catam train station. But I suspect it does not on Sundays, nor take you home again. The bus might be a number 136. Dead Horse might know.

It is not walkable. It is over another 7 miles from Upnor.

I told you to buy a 2nd hand mando. Brian Rodgers from Walderslade will be able to fix it.

Sorry to hear that Mrs Leopard, give the old bugger my fondest best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Mr Hat sir, dont even THINK of walking. That road aint for walkers unless they have suicidal tendencies. Its bad enough driving on it.
Buses are rather more frequent than Herr Bridge seems to realise, but not frequent enough to be a viable option. Last I heard it was a 2hourly service - last one back about 10:30pm. Every other day it runs to a Sunday timetable. Folks out there need the religeon, you know.
I am positive that some poor fool (try DeadHorse) would be willing to pick you up from St Roods Station, (or Catam / Row Chester) but check nearer the day, as my social secretary is apt to wisk me off to sundry other events at very little notice.

Trev coming home in surprisingly rude health tomorrow. He now has a healthy glow rather than the somewhat pale complexion. I have a feeling that this has been brewing for years (possibly since childhood). Glad he's coming home. He'll be with me full time for at least a month. No fags, no driving, and he can't pick up a guitar. Cue for some unkind person.....

Whatever he chooses we wish him a speedy and full recovery.

I'm worried about Trev... he asked me to cut up a carrot and put it in the fridge so he could eat some when he fancied a cigarette. He's not had a "virtual fag"... or has he.... whilst he hasn't touched the carrot, he sits chewing the end of a match... no, not the head. Song is being written. I will suggest the mandola idea. Thanks RB.... loved the sheep beauty contests on the Knockholt thread!

And back to the subject matter of the thread.

No dropouts et? Anymore subscribers?

Landlord will this week be bringing me the list of what he can get from Sheps in the way of proper beer to put on the counter in a big box - will a big box be enough?   It depens on numbers... Preferences? I don't much like MasterBrew, nor indeed Shitfire (which is too strong for a session beer too)

Landlady has offered to do us a casserole or stew or something too (I expect with bread dippies), so again numbers are important.

You know you will be stir-crazy after Xmas!

Oh, yes, Romany man, Treacle and Obvious are welcome, the landlord will put his staffie bitch upstairs.

I'd have thought that anything by Shepherd Neame (with the possible exception of Canterbury Jack!) would be good.

Porter would get my vote, and it's suitable for the season, although it may have minority appeal.

Vikings disembarking from longboats to raid a village. In the text balloon over the leaders head

Right men, this time pillage and rape first! Then burn!

Peter the landlord has just shown me the beer list - I ahve asked him to go away and get details of teh "seasonal special" (which I expect will be the Sheps winter warmer or Xmas Ale) and teh "microbrewery special ale" which MIGHT be something form the Nelson Brewery.

Now our attendance list (of beer drinkers) might be

Me
Melodeonboy
Growler
Carrie (if you think the film was scary, watch her drink)
Maybe her oppo Clive
Little Legs (aka Wee Jock)
Essex Girl
Kev the Clogs
The Barden of England (on shandy)
Brian Rodgers
Mumblin Len (if fit) and Girl Friday and maybe a Leopard Cub.
Graham "plunk" Anstee
Sue and Tony Urwin
Virginia and her Tams
Possibly MGAS and Richard Atkins
Woodsie
Naughty 40 (and that is only her bra size)
Romany Man
Dipsodeb and Pat (wonderful harp player)
Dead Horse (shame he sings) and maybe Mrs Dead Horse
Folksinger 54 (if we are lucky)
PTH
Fisheye and George

Allow a quarter for no-shows, that makes 21 folking drinkers at 3 pints each makes 63 pints of real ale = nearly 8 gallons = a small barrel, not just a box.

Shall I tell Peter the landlord that - as planned consumption - or more, or less? And given the above do we have a view as to the preferred nature of the brew or what?

Yes, that was the pub before it burnt down, and Hogarth did indeed spend a very debauched weekend there back in 1600 and frozen to death. The new building is the age I stated above.

If you are into Hogarth, while you are here it may be worth visiting the Hogarth Arms on the Isle of Grain a few miles down the road (overshoot, landfall is Zeebrugge) and the church there too.

I find it amusing that you have said the same (nearly) and that VT has blown a fuse this time. This site is just the same as Text messages - the English is correct (in the main) and common to all - it's just the translation that sometimes gets confused and then causes some sparks.

By the way, talking of sparks Hoff - your list is missing an important person - Dilligaf!!! I won't tell her that you missed her off the list (well, maybe I will), but I'm sure someone else will!!!!

Beer sounds good, it all sounds good.

Carrie - You MUST turn up on said day, as I want to plead with you to join Bishop Gundulf's Morris as a fully accomplished and able and capable Fiddle player!!!!!! Please!!!! You DID say during the summer that would think about it!!!!

RB just doesn't get the American humours of sense.

I did not get the allusion to band name thing which is quite surprising as I was addicted to the whole Motown thing in the early 70s when I was a tender 12 to 14 year of age.

I did assume, albeit erroneously it was something untoward but I was not really upset by it. I was just goofing. It's that sarcasm thing we Yanks do so well. We think sarcasm is funny but really it is passive aggressive. I will try to rein it in in future.

Is it a full moon?

p.s. I noticed Dilli wasn't on the list too, but was in a hurry this morning before work to post my little play... err play my little post... you know what I mean.

Quite right Growler - Dilligaf drinks whatever, especially real ale (Tut tut Hoff, you should know this by now) Ps, hope you are heartened by my last PM - we will succeed!!

RM - if you DARE ring margarine, both Hoff and I will have your sweetbreads removed, toasted and distributed amongst the assembled guests on the very afternoon that we plan to meet - get my drift dear boy!!! :-)))) If L is away with the outlaws at that time, then it will do you good to be with us - WE who are responsible and caring and will guide you suitably during such times - (thinking about it, you're probably better off going to the sales!!!! - only kidding!)

Anyone got any CONCRETE dates for Deal and Tenterden 2009 as I am putting together our programme - tried surfing and not had much/any luck with these two!!!

If I was to remove 4 of the Mandolin strings and keep the remaining four on.
1.E.1.A 1D,1G.
I have been told this will improve my chord changing ability in reguards to the more difficult chords, (which is any chord but a two fingered one.)

Has anyone heard the likes of this ?

But it won't be a mandolin. It will probably be a Uke. The whole point is to learn the chords with the correct strings on the instrument. You only need to learn 3 or 4 chords to get going.

Not everyone gets to pull a cracker in a folk setting, RM, some of us pull dogs (or ferrets).

And so to the serious matter: beer.

I have spoken again to Peter the licensee today. Sheps have been mucking him about and he has not been able to find out what session/seasonal beers he will be able to get in small barrel or large box for serving under gravity.

I will check again tomorrow evening, Monday.

I'm not a mad fan of Masterbrew - but it is the weakest (3.8, I think) so perhaps a choice for the drivers.

If it is still available, Kent's Best (which I prefer) is I think 4.1.

I quite like the Late Red (not sure of the strength offhand) and the Oyster Stout (quite strong I think).

Sheps also do some Xmas beers in bottles - but they are IMHO too strong to drink as session beers. They are WAY stronger than Shitfire (Spitfire) and Nun's Pleasure (Bishop's Finger)- but they are well reviewed. Shall I suggest Peter gets a few bottles in and leaves them on the shelf unrefrigerated?

Tonight he was awake. Sheps have been playing their cards close to their chest. He doesn't know what they will be offering him but tomorrow is the last order date - so he will have to take what they offer. I have said that if he gets the choice he should go (in order of preference: -

1. A "seasonal special" - if it is not too strong.
2. Kent's Best.
3. Late Red.
4. Masterbrew.

It has indeed been such a palaver that I decided not to offer to guarantee him his money back on the second mini-barrel, so if there is only one mini-barrel and it runs out you will have to drink something else.

Still no sign of the new grate for the log burner in teh saloon end. THe little Victorian fireplace (alas no vintage surround) at the end we will be at does fairly well though, so we will be all right even if the punters chill.

Romany man - if you have a spare storm grating and two bricks in the yard, we could pop them into the logburner with no grate and improvise - I have chainsaw and some logs over the road!

If all else fails we'll have to bring some of my Calor fires over - but it is alleged to be getting warmer, innit?

Or we could snuggle up to Dilligaf, one side at a time.

Or the ferrets.

Or Seamus.

Off to practise Sir Patrick Spens - but don't worry, I probably won't have it learned by the 28th.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Maybe Song Ssn Stoke N Kent Sun 28 Dec?

No, no tiling, he has a logburner built by someone stupid out of 1/4 inch plate, and the only air ingress is through the front doors which also hold the logs in - so when you open them to get a draught the pub burns down!

Regulating airflow would be possible but too tricky for a temporary bodge.

All that is needed as an emergency measure is a metal grid (ie firebed) that we can prop the front of up a couple of inches to let air through underneath the fire so tha tit draws, leave the front door open a bit, the tilt keeps the logs on the fire! Maybe.

A whole log basket would be grand if there was one going to scrap (dammit, I gave one away 4 years ago), but otherwise you get my drift about using a storm drain grille.

I'll pop over and measure it now.

Problem solved! The grate is installed in that burner now and is burning smokeless with a log on top and looks lovely and the whole pub is lots warmer so we will be fine at both ends!

Landlord out now but I'll pop in later and report back on the beer situation.

I've been in again tonight (oo-er Missus) and the beer on the bar will be Kent's Best - a 10 gallon barrel ordered especially for us folkies - a drinkable strength and less sulphurous than the MasterBrew.

First come, first served.

After it's gone, lagers, bottled ciders, bottled Shitfire, bottled Nun's Pleasure.

John Barden told me he had researched the busses and that it was technically possible to get here by bus on Sunday. Whether that is true on THAT Sunday may be a good question. The travel time by bus from Chatham is considerable, since the bus journey involves a circular tour of Hoo and High Halstow, I think. A bus back may be even less likely.

And if a bus fails to arrive you will be stuck.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Maybe Song Ssn Stoke N Kent Sun 28 Dec?

Ah-hah.

According to the bus-maps you can use the 191, 197, or 796. But only the 191 on Sundays (unless I have done something wrong - check it yurself!

You have in theory a 191 bus leaving the Pentagon at 11.48 am that will get you to Lower Stoke at 12.33. If it runs. Miss it and the next one is two hours later. If it runs.

There is only one bus back. It leaves Lower Stoke at 16.47 (if it runs) and arrive at the Pentagon at 17.38 The next bus is early the following morning.

There has been some talk of a group of people hiring an 8 seater taxi from Chatham. If it's full the price per head will probably be modest - maybe a fiver one way.

Otherwise car sharing would be a good option.

I bet the new guy could get the bus services running better (still a bit wet during the middle bit of the journey though!!!).

St. Rude is the nearest station. But I don't think the busses go their on Sundays.

Starting from St. Rude teh local communities en route are

Chavven DEEEEEEN (Chattenden)
Who? (Hoo)
High Arsehole (High Halstow)
Fenn Street Corner (!)
Upper Dogsbottom (Upper Stoke)
Middle Dogsbottom (Middle Stoke)
Lower Coke (Lower Stoke)
and then on to the Isle of Brain (not) in one direction and
Swanscombe on Marsh (ooops, Alhallows) in the other, where you can still see the Piltdown man winning pub quizzes (and brawls).

Deliverance has little on us!

From Strood railway station to Lower Stoke.directly down the A28.

Pete the hat, If you are anywhere near A28 then you are bleedin' miles off route mate.
Marks for homework 7/10. Must try harder.
And as for bus running times, I used to run that route regular, and on a Sunday total running time was 55mins each way and it was a two hourly service leaving Chatham at 48 mins past the hour.
Cowboy Arriva got 1hr 10mins for same journey weekdays.
See Sunday Time Table and scroll down to Grain Buses (Sundays)
Bus stop nr Strood Stn is actually the one outside Prince Of Wales pub.
Bus does not stop unless you stick yer hand out.
Bus is old and drafty/rickety.
So is driver.
Most drivers are mean an' 'ornery, wiv no sense of humour.
Some have no sense of direction either.

Pete

The offer of lift still stands from me and Chris as well. So Dude, you now have a number of potential lifts from home and from Rochester Station.
Where do you need to be back at afterwards and at what time? You might just luck out, getting door to door service from different drivers.

We had a good session with Bishop Gundulfs (without margarine) at the Fenn Bell on boxing day, looking forward to a repeat only better.

Alas Matt who did not play at the Fenn Bell will have returned to London (you remember, the brilliant guitarist who sometimes does accompaniment for Rachel) and Rachel will be on the way to York, but Royston will be down for the Nags, so if I remmber to do Ramble away in D not E his voice may survive for us to do Blood Red Roses in A rather than B!.

Well I went to work folks the thought of having to leave you lot early while the session carried on was unbearable. Apart from that
I could not have a drink and go to work and if the session did go on and was a good sess I would have blown work out completely so common sense prevailed in the end. Thanks again to those to offered lifts.

Anyway a list of future dates?events may be handy so I can plan ahead.

still I was very constuctive I stayed at home and disconnected the Spegettti of old radiator pipes around me house. And boxed in the new ones.
I wonder if one can play the radiator pipes.drill holes in them and attach a tumpet mouth piece or better still reverse the process and attach them to a hooversave all that blowing. I,ll give it a go. I ,ll bring it to knockholt. It will give me something to mess about with after I have burned me Mandolin.

Mandolin burning will take place on the Saturday night at Knockholt.

What's the verdict?

Do we fancy doing one on Sun 25th Jan?

Can anyone who studies feetball tell me whether that day is likely to be ruined by moronball on TV?

I am ambivalent. We did in the barrel all but a couple of pints and the Kent's best was nice, and teh acoustics were good, but the TV was on (contrary to promises), the pub was a bit loud (with the landlord actively participating in that noise), the landlady did not bother to do any nibbles (and FFS roast tatoes are cheap), they only lit one fire and it was not adequately warm.

Large percentage of no-shows indicates the location is not good for all.

I'll run with the majority.

Richard I would have been there old bean, if I could have got the time off. I really enjoy these folk sessions has it involves firstly drinking secondly playing and thirdly great people.

We all have to miss sessions because of work.
distance is nothing to me. Where theres a pub there a way I say.I can drive but choose not too.

Lift or no lift. get a lift, Hitch, walk start at 6am in the morning. My Polish Girlfriends got the right hump with me she said I should have phoned in sick." She up the pole. She wanted to come and crash at mine afterwards, Which is all very well ,she dont go back to work till Jan 5th 2009.While she stays at her parents house in Chislehurst. This is not a rant this is the truth.

We all had the same Par-larva with Otford and the football. I cannot see a round way that one. The same with noisey Regualars /landlords.
in regards to food I got starving hungry at Rochester and went round the chip shop and brought the food back in the pub. within minutes overs followed suit and the terrific landlady and landlord said nothing. After all if one drinks it healthy to eat too boot. I have just checked my work rota and I am off the 23rd 24th 25th Jan 09. So yes second time round I will be there if it come,s off .
Regards Pete.

Generally, I think I'd go along with your comments, Richard, and it was a little frustrating at times trying to hear some of the quieter singers over the noise. However, I thought that the overall mood was positive and that people had a good time.

I don't know what the situation is regarding football on the telly. I'm fairly sure that there won't be a full fixture list on the 25th Jan., as there was today, but there may well be F.A. Cup matches. Whether that makes any difference, I don't know. I suspect that they have it on all the time anyway. Best to ask the landlord on that one, I think.

Provisionally, I'd be interested in another session (e.g. January) there. I shan't make any bold promises - you know, many a slip (i.e. Jumbo Gumbo gig) twixt cup and lip!

Finally, thanks for organising it, Richard. I think it was well worth doing.

Yes

Thank you Richard. Was a bit noisy on the bar side but we really enjoyed ourselves. It is a nice little pub. Good acoustics too or I should never have heard (Fisheye's friend I think Paul). Sorry I had a bit of the brain freeze and passed my singing turn a few times. Don't know if it was the cold or just the unfamiliar environment. Suspect it was latter.

re doing it again. Maybe ask the landlord if it is worth it to him to have monthly music sessions. Would have been good, if he had come over and welcomed us, showed interest. At Blackmore the pub landlord, keeps sneaking upstairs and hangs about the door of the function room to have a listen until he is called back down to the bar. So we know we are truly welcome.

As far as nibbles are concerned... if monthly session does go forward there is nothing to stop us asking for and contributing little cash towards provision of a few baskets of hot nibbles.

Many thanks to RB for organizing a very successful afternoon session. The pub and landlord could have been a little warmer, (perhaps they were more used to inebriated karaoke louts, without any senses )
It was definitely a little to loud to hear my delicate voice and from the feedback even George was difficult to hear.. So it was a wonderful to hear Kevin voice again over coming a 42" TV screen and the noise from the bar.' Welcome back Kevin'. Also VT's voice added to a wonderful session.

As for another session Yes George and myself would be interested.........Alas a Sunday would
be difficult for the Fair Maiden of Nottingham (FMN)

VT (little bit)
The Silent One (little bit)

So it is starting to look as if some of us were drinking more than our fair share!

I thought the feedback from the last one was quite positive, Richard. We could probably read into that that many who were there last time would come again, and that we'd be likely to get several who didn't turn up last time (e.g. Growler, Carrie, Pierre Le Chapeau).

If you do run another one on the 25th, I shall almost certainly be there.

Well, we did virtually all of a 72-pint barrel at £2.50 per pint, equals £180 and there were a range of us drinking other stuff - lager, Guinness, tea/coffee etc. We were surely 20 people and it takes no effort to put over a tenner over a bar..

That's gross of course (by which I mean it is not all net profit)...

There are Landlords and there are Landlords.
Some are of the "Mine host" variety, and are the backbone of many a little community, hosting, organising, and spreading bon homie throughout the land.
On the other hand, some are totally indifferent to anything outside of just being open during licensing hours.
There are lots of landlords in the "between" as well of course, and to get one from the second category up into the first should be the aim of all true pub lovers.
I guess we should try again, and if there appears to be no improvement in our welcome, then the Good Intent is well deserving of our patronage.
Perhaps the guy at the pub in Stoke is content in knowing he is now the only pub in the village?

Not only that, the Rose & Crown in All Hallows is gone and think the White Horse is going (at least, a lost builder asked me the way to it in the village, the other day). That leaves the British Pilot (where a gorilla that knew sign language could easily be the most intelligent and eloquent occupant) and the Fenn Bell as the next nearest.

Actually, I think the landlord maybe prefers karaoke and foo'ball on the plasma screen. I just can't drag myself back in there at present.

Hoff, the White Horse in Upper Stoke!!!???? Not heard anything on the grapevine - interesting!!!??

As for us (Dilligaf and I), we will NOT be at the next one as it is the Whitehall Parade in memory of King Charles I and we will be re enacting the funeral procession/route along with the rest of Sir Thomas Blackwell's Regiment of Foote et al.

With regards to the pub and the sessions - this was brought up at Essex Girl's party on Saturday night. I agree with you - it didn't feel welcoming at all. The landlord was bloody rude in not introducing himself or indicating that he was pleased. The locals didn't seem to give a toss. The barmaid tried her best to be friendly and keep locals in check. Looking back at the comments since - everyone has made positive comments, and/or negativ e comments in roughly equal ammounts. Give it the benefit of the doubt and do another one (having spoken to the landlord first) and THEN DECIDE if we are going to blow him out!!!! I thought you did a bloody good job in getting it all together!!! I was very sceptical about the whole event before it happened - some of what I thought, happened, some didn't - and I did start singing again (company, NOT the venue that did that though!!!! (thanks for the nice comments VT, KTSM, FE and RM)

Give it a go in Jan. If it goes Pete Tong, then there other venues that we can use and would be HAPPY for us to be there.

Kev

We just started singing out again on Friday. Easing ourselves into travelling and performing. Fab Club on Sunday was further than M Len has ever driven since his attack. He needed to use his spray on arrival and sat in the first available chair, But we managed 2 songs in the first half and one at the end. Will therefore probably go to Essex on 25th. Have a good one!

Oh well, in that case if one of you would like to invest in some nutcrackers you can do some songs in one of the other Kevin's keys, since he will be in Whitehall-doncher-know.

Can you get Fiddlebird and her significant other there as well?

Sorry about that computer froze. bloody Par-larva

Re Funeral of King Charlas 1st.

now do not forget Mr Clogs that Charlas 1st was buried wearing the SAME two identical shirts that he was wearing prior to being beheaded.

Why was he wearing TWO shirts. Well on Jan 30th 1649 it was Snowing and bloody freezing cold so he wore two low necked identical shirts to keep him warm and stop him shivering because he thought the crowd at the scaffold might think he was shivering with fear so thats why he wore two shirts.

also in 1649 the new year did not start untill March so to be correct charlas 1st was not executed in 1649 he was indeed executed on the 30th Jan. 1648. I hope this account of this true historical fact does not bugger up your day in question Mr Clogs.

In regards to the present venue at lower stoke on the 25th I will most deffinately be there with out fail.

For those folk who suffer from High blood pressure.

According to a scaffold account the blood from Charlas severed neck shot up some 6ft up in the air. Now that whats you call High Blood pressure.

VT why not chop off your ex colleague,s Head the party will be
cancelled then you can come stright on to The Nags Head. Sorted
