Couldn't help but notice that Ms. Duckboots mentioned Dr. Bronner's soap in the "String Cleaning" thread. (What's she doin' messing in a picker's thread anyway?) Being a child of the sixties (and just as child-like in the nineties) I well remember Dr. Bronner's. If you aren't familiar with the product, put on your sandals and peace jewelry and I'll tell you about it. A plastic bottle about 10 inches high full of soap....and with hundreds of thousands of words in the tiniest printing imaginable all over the label. Absolutely EVERY possible space was filled with the most bizarre pseudo-religious babblings. Now I'm not trying to be sacriligious. It's just that nothing made any sense. Interspersed with the judaic/new-age/christian/mystical stuff were instructions on how to use Dr. Bronner's for absolutely everything from: mouthwash(ugh!) to floor cleaning to upholstery de-odorizing.

One day while visiting Sandy and Caroline at Folk-Legacy, we met Ralph Bronner, son of the extremely eccentric Dr. himself. Ralph travels the country selling soap and singing songs to kids, and is a charmer. He explained that his father didn't have a great command of English, hence that's why nothing on the bottles made any sense. He sang us a couple of songs, I gave him a copy of "Lifeline" and he gave us 4 bottles of soap (including the cherished "Eucalyptus"). The soap lasts forever, or at least it seems that way, I just finished the last drop of "Wintergreen" last week.

Anyone else "get nekkid" with Dr. Bronner's.

Rick

I remember Dr. Bronner's in Green Label and Blue Label. Smelled great. Made my body feel clean. In extreme situations used it for toothbrushing (bleah) and clothes washing (improved the smell). It's still available at my food coop and a health food store near here. I think I'll pick up a bottle for old time's sake... But, Blue Label or Green Label????

Yeah.........So did the good Doctor die at Christmastime when someone sliced him up as a FRUITCAKE!!!! Oh man do I love that label.....and here I was, just this morning, practicing on the E-Mail/Cookie Thread for the 34th Annual James Joyce Bullshit Writing Contest....and there on a soap bottle, words of greatness!!! WOW---All for One, One For All, 3 for a quarter, and Cleanliness is Next to the Good Humor Man and the UPS guy. How demeaning to say he didn't have a good grasp of the language!!!! It's perfectly clear!!! Obviously he had no grasp on reality but what the hell...........The soap's a real whiffer and scrubber huh? Clean the smegma off a bull's tool at 30 paces you say?

HIYIYIYI..........but lookit here Jobu, since you're digging away....Art and I were recalling that Redd Foxx used to peddle a soap named FUGG. That's right, if it needs cleaned...FUGG It. You've tried all the other cleaners and you can't get off that Dago wine barf? FUGG It. Your house needs a complete top to bottom cleaning? FUGG It. If it will help your search Joe, FUGG was made by one of America's Foremost Manufacturers. They've been making Foremost for years and are now manufacturing the big, new, Fivemost. FUGG came with a written, moneyback guarantee. If you return the unused portion of the product, they'll return the unused portion of your money. Now if all this is too "dirty" for your computer Joe....See it comin' doncha'? Sure.........FUGG It.

Used the mint stuff to wash in a cool clear mountain stream on a once-upon-a-time camping trip. Quite the rush.

'Spaw, the word "dago" would have got you beat up in my South Jersey hometown.

Dr. Bronner's soap was the only Castille soap I've ever seen. And James Joyce has a character pun about Castille being a song--"cast steel" as in the rows of trolley ("Rose of Tralee"). {Did you ever think one could mix up Dr. Bronner and James Joyce and bring this thread around to a song?]

Hey Paisan!
Now that I look at your photo again, the resemblance to a hippie John Denver completely disappears. Where have I seen that face? On a movie poster? In a post office? On a street corner singing doo-wop? Wait a minute, weren't you the young Italian waiter that Joe Peschi shot in the foot (and then all over) in Good Fellas? Oh well, now I know where your hot blood comes from.

I have some of Dr. Bronner's Almond Soap upstairs in the bath. The smell is worth the soap.

Catspaw, you missed half or the routine. For extremely difficult jobs, the same manufacturer produced SUGG. The advertising of course was "If you can't FUGG it, SUGG it". Or maybe that was reversed, who knows? It was a long time ago.

And I can't believe I have fallen to this low level of puerile humor just to make a point. Catspaw, you're going to be the ruination of all of us.

Recently Ralph Bronner sent me a fan letter and an entire case of soap---the regular scent--peppermint--almond scent---just amazing stuff. Along with it came a 3 X 2 FOOT poster (suitable for framing) of THE LABEL. Our son, Chris, took it home. It DOES make sense in a delightfully balmy sort of way. It's sort of a Wobbly idea for "one big church" instead of union---all under one roof and everyone getting along. Tonight I'm really grubby and will be using my last bottle of PEPPERMINT before retiring. Then I'll break out the Almond bottle (only got one o' those) which I've not used any of. We just open it and smell it every once in a while.

And folks, you can bet your sweet bippy that I sent Mr. Ralph Bronner a couple of my recent CDs.---And I've not heard from him since... Wonder why?

I didn't intend to impune Mr. Ralph Bronner at all. Didn't think I had. He is a fine fellow. The soap is a pure castille soap--bottle are filled by real people with a hose who screw on the caps themselves. A great roots operation. No advertising at all---just word-of-mouth promotion. And we're doing that right now I guess. And they are perfectly happy doing it "small" and not being typical. As Bob Franke said in a song once, "As long as sentimental super-salesmen tell it wrong and make it big, I will malke it small and tell it right." There's my career in folk music in a nutshell.

Actually this goes way back to catspaw's using a four letter word (Dago). My dad came over from Italy when he was 12, moved to the DC area with his family, found he was being really hassled about his accent etc. He was a tall skinny guy (He still only weighed 135 pounds when he was 27) and looked like a pushover, but he got lots and lots of practice in fighting because he would fight like a tiger if anyone called him a Dago or a Wop. Fairly soon, he was winning most of the fights.

By the time he was 18 or 20, it finally dawned on him that the only people left who were calling him Dago were his friends. They couldn't resist teasing him, because he would invariably light into whoever had said it. Once he realized what they were doing, he lightened up, and his good friends called him a Dago all his life (with no more repercussions.)

Ah, the educational value of the Mudcat. I just learned about a wonderful product with a label worthy of reading during breakfast, and a new response to my wife if she complains that the sink if full of dirty dishes. Of course, if one of your friends has problems with body odor, you can tell him to go Fugg himself (or herself, as the case may be).

Sometime in the future, if I stay here, I'll earn my MM degree (Master of Mudscatology). Of course Catspaw was able to challenge all the academic work, and he can put together The Collected Postings of Catspaw as his dissertation--the coveted DM degree. And who said there's no gain without pain?

I keep Dr. Bonner's in my gym bag. The other day, there was no soap in any of the dispensers in the shower. I passed out some Dr. B to everyone. Not only did the place smell good for the first time ever, everybody actually started talking to each other - not a common occurance among men in a gang shower. Obviously Dr. Bonner's is meant to be used by more than one person at a time. When that happens, the label suddenly starts to make sense.

By complete (and coincidental) coincidence, a customer introduced me to Dr. Bronner's soap and I will be carrying it in my little store. I was thinking that stories like this, of people who make things and make it work, this way, might be worth a BS thread. Just for the word of mouth, you know?

And Art, thanks for the quote. That's a philosophy I've been trying to articulate for a while.

Having just returned from the wilds of Michigan (does that wash off with Dr Bronner's?) I was wondering if any of you gifted 'Catters would care to write us a song about Dr. Bronners? It certainly cries out for one.

And, at the risk of dropping this into Catspaw's hands, am I the only one who has applied this soap to a sensitive area and suffered the consequences? Wowie owwie! I don't do that no more.

The Bob Franke song Art quotes also contains the quote about how.."poets used to hang around in poet bars,
But their hands would start to wander
And the evening would break up too soon
Till someone thought to give them all guitars."

Blessings,
Barbara

Well! I went off to the Food Coop yesterday and got not only the peppermint kind, but the *lavender* kind. No wintergreen to be seen, though they had baby, eucalyptus, and almond. The Coop carries it in bulk, so I am deprived of the labels, but it was really the soap I was after. Yes, Barbara, the stuff has to be diluted significantly for personal washing of an intimate nature. If not, you might inhale that extra 7 days of water (see the vasectomy thread). O does the smell of peppermint castille bring back memories--I can hear "the low spark of high-heeled boys" even as I write this (see the songs and memories thread). As for lyrics, I'm mulling on some, but my songwriting process is so pokey, somebody else is sure to have a finished product long before I do.

Wecome back!

Good people,

I just got off the phone with Ralph Bronner and he sends you all his heartiest salutations and good wishes for your own personal peace as well as his ardent desire that we all find real and lasting peace for our blue and green sphere. I have received his instructions to be certain to send him a printout of this entire thread (he's not much into computers)---and you can be positive that, as soon as I post this message to the thread, I will most assuradly be doing just that.

Rick & Sandy & Caroline, Mr. Bronner has fond memories of hanging out with you two that day a few years ago at Folk Legacy. He would be much pleased if you both would get in touch with him at:

Ralph Bronner
W172 N9335 Shady Lane
Menominee Falls, Wisconsin 53201

And Ralph would really like to hear from all the Mudcatters who have spoken so highly of his products. He is a humanitarian, a philanthropist, a scholar and a gentleman who can even translate his father's label and strive to explain his dad's eccentricities. (Truly, that's no mean feat.) If you do contact Ralph, I can assure you that it'll most likely be the start of an adventure of friendship, mutual growth and possibly even sweet-smelling cleanliness. THIS IS NOT SPAM! I really wouldn't do that here--and I mean that. But Mr. Bronner, who is a folksinger too, was amazed when I told him about this discussion that is taking place around his soap---and he'd like to get to know the individuals that make up this cyberfolk community. So if you feel like it, drop him a line. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised what might come of that action. Ralph isn't a computer person much; that's why I'm printing up the thread and sending it to him.

Rick, he'll be in Toronto in September I think he said.

By the way, I don't dilute the soap and neither does Ralph. I do get wet under the shower first though. Ralph's dad, Dr. Bronner, did dilute it. But Dr. Bronner was a "a little different" in just about everything he did.

Aren't we all a bit "different"? Why else would we be folksingers? ;-) As Ken Kesey said, "When the going gets tough, the weird turn pro!!"

Barbara,

I'd gladly show you any time how to gently apply the soap, after first wetting you down real good. And I can do that without any sensations on your part except extreme bliss and ultimate, total and excruciatingly enhanced waves of total satisfaction. Alas, us guys might not be as sensitive, but we do get on with the tasks at hand (so to speak) with more immediate deliberateness than the feminine folk do just like we do when, going shopping, we go after the thing we came for(so to speak) right away, and when we find it, we leave the boutique instead of mistaking the department store for a museum and wandering around for 3 hours before doing that for which we came. No, not less sensitive --- actually moreso. That's why we often have crossed home plate while the significant other might be lingering back on second or third. Personally, I like to watch as those with the feminine mystique cross home in front of me. It's a gratifying sight for sure. That's the way one must score if we're to remain within the rules of the game. Otherwise we're both out! If you're already on third a good bunt will take you home too just as well as a homer.

To quote somebody who once said it I think, "In the game of life, as in baseball, four balls is always better than two."

Art (sorry if this is thread creep. Just couldn't stop myself.)

My brother acquired a case of the liquid back in the 60's and I thought it was the best thing I had ever used. It made you tingle all over and smelled great.
