The new house in NC... 8 steps and a landing then 7 steps up to the 2nd floor... Oh, 16 stepd from my bed to the bathroom... Am I a nut, 'er what??? Serious responses appreciated... B~ |

I have been estimating time since I was in 7th grade, and I needed to know how long it took to get between various classes, so I knew if I had time to stop at locker. Now I have a VERY good idea of elapsed time..from seconds to hours. I know how long it takes to get ready to leave for a drive, and can guess quite close to what delays there will be at various times of the day.........so I am the guy who arrives ON TIME at your party, like it said on the invitation, instead of a fashionable 20-30 minutes late. Bobert will be in good shape if he ever goes blind and needs to stop before he walks into the barn door.... |

So, it's 482 steps from your front door to the nearest store, start walking while counting 482, 481, 480... and so on. Do this enough times and your OCD will become normal and then slowly move to becoming CDO. If you're really lucky, you'll get confused halfway through and won't know whether your counting backwards or forwards. For example, count backwards until you get to, say, 110 - and then forget and start counting forwards again. You'll have walked 372 steps, leaving you 110 to count backwards. But when you count forwards, you'll end by counting up to 220 - and your step count from door to store will be totally fucked up. Do this for several weeks until every count you know makes no sense whatsoever. Then play the banjo. Result. |

Most light changes are between 20 - 40 seconds but I always count 40 just to make sure. Crazy but true. Unless it is a temporary light of course which can seem to take forever and throws me completely out of kilter. The other thing is I like to woosh past automatic doors and count how many paces past I get before they close themselves. So you think you're mad? |

Oftentimes obsessive behavior patterns are the result of someone trying to repress overwhelming subterranean emotions/feelings that they are not capable of currently consciously integrating. Therefore if this pattern is controlling you and causing you anxiety and it seems to be growing, counseling with a professional may be advisable. On the other hand, maybe it's not this serious. |

Like biff said, if it doesn't interfer with your life or cause significant anxiety it is no big deal. (It can be very incapacitating.) Having a mild obsession or compulsion that does not cause significant distress or interference with social, work or school functioning does not warrant a diagnosis of OCD. Some of us have mild obsessions and/or compulsions that are persistent but really don't matter. Many more of us will experience recurrent but mild obsessions and/or compulsions triggered during times of stress. My 2 OCD things are crooked pictures and untied shoe laces. The crooked picture one only emerges during times of stress, and I can resist the urge to straighten pictures without too much problem, but find them very distracting. There is a corridor at the hospital that is lined with the portraits of the first Board of Directors. They are all as cattywhomped as can be. Recently went through a very stressful couple of months, and during that time, that crooked line made me want to scream. I actually tried once to straighten them, but they are big and heavy and it soon became clear that there was a risk of damage, and I wasn't about to embarrass myself by calling Maintenance to request they rehang them. Things have settled down, and the pictures rarely even register as there now, much less that they are crooked. Shoelaces are harder. They always get my attention. Sometimes, usually during periods when I am experiencing a good bit of stress and distress, I can not control the impulse to call attention to it, usually to a latency age kid, or the parents of a younger child, when I am pretty certain it is not a style choice. I don't ever say anything to teens, (my own son excepted, ) but it is hard. I get little obsessional images of the kid tripping and banging their teeth or nose on the sidewalk. I think it comes from a classic mean prank I played on a kid in Junior High. He fell asleep in class. I wasn't much of a prankster - a real goody-two-shoes - and felt very brave and "cool" when I did it. I noticed the untied shoelace and tied it to his chair leg. When the bell rang, he did trip rather spectacularly. Instead of him being amused, he was angry and he obviously felt very embarrassed and humiliated. I still feel shame when I recall that incident. OCD is not caused by psychodynamics - it is caused by brain chemistry, and there is a strong hereditary tendency. The content of the obsessions or compulsions, however, may be determined or influenced by psychodynamic issues. |

Today booze, tomorrow the Democrats!..but if you stop the booze, then you may be, what is called a 'dry alcoholic'...which means, even though you may stop drinking, you need to address the behavior that gives one an excuse to..and that is programming a 'failure'...which is the reason to feel sorry for one's self, so they can feel 'justified' to pick up the ol' bottle! It becomes a viscous cycle..and often people substitute 'other things' for the booze.(like political stubbornness, to the point of OCD. After 'forgiving' everyone for 'making you want to drink'(?), and asking forgiveness for all those you have 'offended', it can be a REALLY good idea to re-direct those energies into something more beneficial.....perhaps a more serious study of your instrument. Then any obstacle can be worked out through a serious practice, and boundaries that were limitations can be worked though......HOWEVER, as I've noted on here before, "Art for therapy may be great therapy, but it might not be great art!" Almost Every time I look at a guitar I count the tuners, even my own and the 12 string especially. I always count the spokes in wheel covers and the holes in between. I try to count the windows in the Law & Order set but never get them all. I think it's more boredom than anything, and I can stop in mid count and say, why am I wasting my time doing this? |

It can be caused by organic brain disease, and that gets more likely the later it starts. The OCD may not be very serious but what's causing it might be. It's not a problem from an OCD standpoint unless you can't stop counting when you need to. I always just figured it was how my brain occupies itself when there aren't other specific thoughts going on, although I'm almost as good at background counting while thinking of other things as I am at background music while my brain is otherwise busy. I started life as a percussionist. Maybe there's a relationship. |
