The area I do have problems with is the M62 between Manchester where I live and Bradford where I work. Normally about 1.25 hours each way. Down to 55 minutes on bank holidays and, at worse, 5 hours :-( More and more it is getting to be 2 - 2.5 hours and, to be honest, I've had enough. So, the house is under offer and, at last, we have found somewhere we both like and can afford. Not quite in the Yorkshire Dales but near enough. About 3 miles south of Skipton and 17 miles to work. Moving date predicted to be Feb 15. Keeping our fingers and all else crossed that it goes smoothly. I'll be sad to leave Swinton but I have only been going to the club spasmodically for months now. When you get up at 5:30am a late night at the pub is not really on the cards. Where we are going seems to have a pub with live music as well as countryside and clean air. Hopefuly no gangland shootings either but how do I know what these sheep-farmers get up to... Anyroads. Wish us luck. I'll keep you posted. Cheers DtG |

Skipton town can be a bit wild and woolly on a Saturday night (as we found when we moored our boat there once), but out beyond Snaygill you should be peaceful enough. Drive by shootings can be rare in the countryside, we haven't had one for weeks here, so you'll have to make your own entertainment, but do watch out for the weather in winter (thats September to August up there). |

You can moor up outside our house in Penkridge, Staffs, in about a week! Check out Google Earth: start at Skipton then fly south a little to Bradley. Just to the west of the legend "Bradley" there's photo of the canal taken from a narrowboat named "Adventues of Kara" (24.6.11). Then head all the way south to Penkridge. In the extreme SE corner of the village there's a marina. At the northern end there's a photograph of a bridge taken by - you've guessed it - "Adventures of Kara" (9.7.12). That bridge is about 300 yards south of my house! Hope all goes well, Pete |

From: JohnInKansas Date: 17 Dec 12 - 10:40 PM About a decade and a half ago, I ran the numbers on commuting costs vs real estate costs and was able to inform my realtor that it was worth $1,384 more in house price for each mile closer to work where she found me an acceptable house. (One thing I didn't include in the equations was my time on the road.) Of course that was some time ago, with fairly significant differences in fuel prices and even greater differences in vehicle costs (call it depreciation and maintenance?. Mortgage interest rates now are also quite different. Any recalculation would be significantly affected by location, but I'd wonder what the tradeoff would be now - if I still had to (or could) go to work every day. John |

I don't want to speak too soon but the suggested date for completion is the 15th of Feb and still looking very promising. In the meanwhile I have been diagnosed with quite severe obstructive sleep apnea. Hopefully - In just under 2 weeks - I will be supplied with a CPAP device to help me get my first decent nights sleep in, probably, over 20 years! So, come late Feb, a sleepy Gnome with an 80 mile drive each day will no longer be a danger to the traffic on the M62 :-) I am looking forward to not just one but 2 life changing experiences within a couple of weeks of each other. Since my surgery, sleeping is actually restful. It was turbinate reduction. i think it was a result of high blood pressure - a guess. But, if you have to spend THAT much time in traffic... MAYbe? |

They tend not to operate for apnea here nowadays as the success rate with a CPAP machine is far higher. He also reckons that once I start to sleep better my metabolism should increase and I may find exercise and weight loss easier - So the condition should improve with that. We will just have to see! Glad to hear it worked for you. Oddly enough - even with my weight and other issues I don't seem to suffer from either high blood pressure or high cholesterol. The only vascular issues I have are in my legs where I have had varicous veins stripped out - But they still ache occasionally :-( Answer to that? Yep, you have guessed it. Weight loss again! The new house is right in the middle of some lovely walks. So I will have even less excuse to sit on my bum all weekend! Cheers DtG |
