Bathos!
The Met Office are predicting a storm for Thursday in the UK. Flying debris kind of level. Storm Doris.

Some are dubbing Thursday as Doris Day.

Oh my aching sides.............

A hurricane is a mass of hot air that behaves erratically and destroys much of what's in its path. Naming one "Donald" would be a bit redundant.

In a particularly busy hurricane season, if they were running out of alphabet, they could have used 'p' twice, Storm Pliny The Elder and Storm Pliny The Younger.

Doris could not have been re-named either Donald, or Demosthenes. The naming of storms is done (UK) by alternating gender. So the storm could have been Doris, Dorothy, or Desdemona, but not Donald, nor Demosthenes.

You joke, but it's time to get serious.

"The Met Office also warned there would be a threat of injury from flying debris. "Watch out for falling trees or tiles, secure garden furniture and move vehicles to a safe place," it said.

Getting hit by debris doing 80 is no joke. Think of your kids and grandkids, elderly neighbors. Do they know what's going on?
=========
One day I called my aunt (three miles away) with news of a tornado threat. She had no idea - hadn't had the TV or radio on. The tornado passed one mile from her and killed a woman. Thanks to my thinking of her, my aunt was safely in her basement.

I thought we had Storm Doris a couple of weeks ago. There were certainly high winds forecast and they were calling it Doris, and while we didn't get a storm where we live, we did get one very strong gust which brought down a ridge tile off our roof, so it must have been the strongest for a while.

So as far as I'm concerned, we're up to 'E' already.

Doris could have been Daphne or Demeter. An advantage of classical Greek names is that one wouldn't be stuck for X, as there's a plethora of those from which to choose.

My pupils often had difficulty pronouncing those ancient names. Euripides was frequently read as Yoory Pides. (to rhyme with tides)
And one delightful child told me she'd been reading about the Amazing Basin, through which ran the Amazing River.

A puzzle here - I just I looked up a site listing all the names given to Hurricanes in recent years, and tge names allocated for this year
here , and the sequence for the first few ones this year is Arlene, Brett, Cindy and Don.

So there really should be a hurricane Don, it appears. What's going on?

I think you may find those are names for Caribbean hurricanes Mr Red. The UK ones are different. (and the next one will be Ewan, then Fleur, Gabriel and Holly) I know this is correct because a recent storm was called Barbara, not Brett. Barbara is my sister's name, and I told her she was always raising a storm!

I had a strange recorded message phone call today about the possibility of electricity power cuts due to storm damage tomorrow, and a number to ring if we need help. It rather put the wind up me (sorry, couldn't resist that) Does everyone get these advisory/warning recorded messages, or is it only for the decrepit and elderly like me?
I'm getting a bit worried about this storm; we get quite strong winds anyway in Norfolk, but 70-80mph is going to be awful.

Do you rely on medical equipment which requires electricity? If so, you should be worried. If not, merely be alert and cautious. This would include:

bringing outdoor furniture in from the yard
charge the cell phone and similar devices
make sure you have food and some drinking water
staying home during the storm
never drive into running water

if you have to go outside, watch for downed power lines

But probably the best thing to do is to pack up some clothes and travel to a place not in the path of the storm.

We don't get 'em that bad, leeneia. Well we got one one that bad in1987 but we were told hours before not to worry. 😂

This one will blow for a couple of hours then we will just get back to good old ordinary bad weather. It's the British way.

Well it IS bad here Steve! The wind is fearful (11am) and there are wheelie bins flying about outside (not ours, we had the sense to put them in the garage) I'm worried about our fences, and some of our double-glazing panes aren't too firmly fixed and they keep creaking. There's a strange bright yellow light outside and the sky looks like a Turner painting. My daft husband has gone out to Asda to get more Scotch bonnet chillies. I just hope he doesn't end up with a Norfolk oak tree across his car.
The gusts are getting stronger by the minute. I'm really quite scared to be honest.
Think I'll watch some Border Morris dancing on Youtube. That always cheers me up!

A bit of a breeze in Sussex this morning, with clouds and lots of sun - also quite warm, and I've just walked up to the paper shop in nice sunshine.

The wheelie bins - out for the waste collectors - were in the road this morning, so there must have been some wind during the night.

But that's not unusual in our bedroom...

Total thread drift I know, but I'm trying to distract myself from Doris:-

Go on Youtube and find 'Blue Ridge Mountain Dancers with Pete Seeger'.
It's a very short black and white video filmed in the sixties of an absolutely fabulous group of clog dancers, performing in Rhode Island. Every time I watch it, I'm there with them dancing too. It's mesmerising. My goodness those North Carolina youngsters were out of this world.
A person who actually danced with them on the video has written a commentary underneath, and says how wonderful it was that many of the spectators had brought musical instruments with them and played along with the official band!

Well Doris just dealt us a power cut here at M11. It lasted an hour and interrupted my afternoon nap when the radio went off and then alarms started going off in nearby houses. The storm itself is more or less blown out by now.

Storm Doris might just be a high spike in a usually mild climate, or global warming might be bringing on a new era of violent and unstable weather. We'll just have to see. Meanwhile, it is foolish to say that storms like this don't happen in England.

I have just been looking at footage on the Telegraph site. It is not comforting.

"Storm Doris has also claimed its first victim after a woman died in Wolverhampton when she was hit by a piece of roof the "size of a coffee table", while a school pupil is in a serious condition after gymnasium ceiling collapses on 40 children."

Those children should not have been in a weak room like a gymnasium! People should not have been outside in that weather. In the film, I see women trying to walk in high winds while wearing high heels. Um, how unrealistic can you get?

Our power went off at 1.40pm, and it's only just come on again. Apparently a huge poplar tree fell on the overhead cable at a village near us. About 20,000 homes without power in Norfolk alone, and the latest count is 230 trees blown down. The biggest disaster is my tub of ice cream has melted in the freezer!
The wind has died down now thank goodness.
You're quite right leeneia, people take silly risks. You even get folk walking along the promenade beside a raging sea, dodging the waves. It's not long before someone gets swept in.

I notice that the Welsh Highland Railway is closed on Friday because of too much debris on the track to be cleared before trains can run.

We had a lot of rain with much surface water around this morning and I had to wear wellies to get down our track. I was held stationary on the M65 for about 20 minutes on my way to a trio practice because there was an accident, no way to tell if it was wind related though.

Walking around the town centre today, nearly being blown off my feet it was good to see that pretty well everyone I saw was clearly enjoying it. Broad grins on people's faces and cheerful exchanges between strangers.

People love a crisis they can manage to deal with. At least they do where I live. I find that very encouraging.
...........
Yes, I got that wrong about names - I'd read this thread as being about a hurricane rather than a storm. So it appears that the Americans can actually look forward to a Hurricane Donald...

"The Storm Doris death toll has risen to three after it emerged a mother was blown into path of a road-sweeper and a lorry driver crashed in high winds."

230 trees down? Each tree represents the chance to be killed or crippled.

When the weather's like that, stay home.

Cornwall was given a sideswipe by the October 1987 storm that did much more damage in the southeast. The worst blow we've had in our thirty years in Cornwall was the Burns Day Storm in 1990. I had to rescue my kids from their school after a section of the roof collapsed, but before I could set off I had to remove a large panel of my own school's music room roof that was sitting on top of my car (an old Toyota that was ripe for the knackers' yard, fortunately). Along with hundreds of other houses, our roof was badly damaged with dozens of slates blown off. There was debris all over Bude and it was hard to find a builder. An unsung storm struck on 29 March 1987, six weeks after we'd moved into our house. It wrecked a large section of our roof and guttering and demolished an 18-foot timber greenhouse that I had been really looking forward to cultivating. I still find bits of glass fifty feet away from where it was. Thank God for insurance! Country life, eh! Quite likely the worst day's weather in this area was on August 16 2004, the day Boscastle was flooded. About eight miles up the road from us at Otterham Station, 200mm of rain was recorded that day, right on the watershed that feeds the three streams that flow towards Boscastle. That's still one of the wettest single days in UK history. Starting at 4.30 that afternoon, we had a fall of 50mm in our garden in under an hour. You have to see that to believe it!

Set off this morning for our weekly supermarket shop, and I was sad to see quite a few large trees with their roots sticking up in the air. Many fairly big bits of trees, branches and so on, lying on the verges of the roads, which had obviously been dragged aside by workers.
One of our neighbours has had his entire garage roof 'removed' and he's got it tarpaulined until it can be fixed.
It's often the silver birches that get blown over,as their roots are shallow, and they like sandy soil, which gives them less stability.
You're right about Boscastle Steve. My husband told me recently that even in Ivory Coast it was on the TV News, complete with film. His old mum was worried, as she thought her son over in UK was going to be drowned!

But surely the next, Ewan, will spark the longest threads on mudcat?

The next names are Ewan, Fleur, Gabriel, Holly, Ivor, Jacqui, Kamil, Louise, Malcolm, Natalie, Oisin, Penelope, Robert, Susan, Thomas, Valerie and Wilbert.

Apparently Ewan is now blowing, but they say it's worst over Ireland.
Wind speed here in Norfolk of (gusts) 35mph. My poor neighbour has only just got his garage and shed roofs put to rights after blooming Doris!
At least my husband managed to get both lawns cut today.

A delightful group of young village children passed our house this afternoon with their great big dog, and they were so excited at the prospect of yet another storm. They'd thoroughly enjoyed the power cut last Thursday, and the little blighters told me they were fervently hoping for another one this evening! Kids eh?
