Dom in ikka?

I think it comes from the name the French colonists gave it - Dominique.
It gets confused with the larger Dominican Republic, which is the western half of the island that also contains Haiti (which I pronounce Ha-EEty, but which some (Americans?) tend to pronounce Heighty.
There can also be confusion between Granada (Graneyda) in the Caribbean and Granada (Granahda) in Spain; and in England between Gillingham in Dorset and Gillingham (Jillingham) in Kent.

I have always had a stammer and went along to a speech therapy course with some half a dozen others when I lived in Gillingham, Kent. In the introduction the therapist got everyone to say who they were and what they hoped to gain from the course. It was, as you might imagine, a somewhat painful exercise. Just about the last person didn't have a stammer at all, but had been sent by his wife because he sometimes mixed up the two Gillingham pronunciations.

For some reason, he never came back after the first session.

there can be a problemo with pronunciation of Ceilidh, which when asked I usually reply "Barn Dance"
And getting receipts from local printers for publicity material, spelling goes the same way.

Now anyone care to pronounce Bodhran? Even Irish speakers differ but an average approximation would be:

Bow (as in bough) ron (as in da doo ron ron) Yea my heart stood still.........

Ok, I know it's French, but what is really so difficult about:
D?j? vu (already seen) - pron: dayjah vyu (near enough)
So often mis-pronounced as dayjah voo (vous) (already you)!

I always pronounced Ceilidh as KAY-lee. As for Bodhran, I've heard someone pronounce the d, but I always said Boe-Rawn.

Other pronunciations that I use:
I often say GAR-idge rather than Ga-RAWGE for Garage, as well as Haych rather than Aych for the letter H and tree for the number 3. (I often say my "T-h's" as a "t".) Program, I sometimes pronounce as Pro-grum.

My iPad keyboard refuses to let me put in apostrophes or speech marks, inserting question marks instead. I can?t edit out the mistakes either. They just come back in the posted version. I think I need that same doctor...

There are three apostrophes in Unicode (at least!); the old fashioned straight up and down that was always in ASCII and two more for an opening quotation and a closing quotation. In addition many things that display or process text replace "I don't recognised that character" by a question mark.

Odds on, that's where your problem.lies, Steve.

How many e-mails have you seen with two character (non) apostrophes? And Apple evangelists can't understand why when the send an email everyone else can't open .page files - they didn't send them as attachments.

I once had a houseguest who is a noted singer from Ireland, and she pronounced bodhran as BOW-run. You trill the r a little bit.

The BOW is the same sound as in "You did great! Take a BOW."

My old iPad, which I have still to update to the latest IOS version, behaves perfectly (I'm doing this post on it). My updated iPad mini even does it for apostrophes that the helpful little word predictor has put in, so it isn't me using the wrong apostrophes.

Ah, it seems iOS 11 includes smart quotes, so all your simple quotation marks are being changes into a closing quotation mark. As with most "smart" stuff, it is only smart enough to stop people doing what they want ...

It doesn't matter whether the smart thingie put in the apostrophe (as it just did there with "doesn't") or whether I put it in. When I type into this box all looks well but, when I post, the apostrophes and speech marks (single or double) have all been changed. If I hit the preview button, the same. If I edit after the preview my intended marks come back, but they still won't post. I've tried enlarging the text to see what the marks look like. They always lean the appropriate way. But post them I cannot!

This was done on my old, un-updated iPad, by the way.
