Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: momnopp Date: 03 Sep 00 - 10:02 PM Howdy, all. I just saw another stalwarth FSGW member and occassional Mudcatter (Jennifer, wife of Songster Bob)today at the Irish Festival in Gaithersburg, MD who wanted to make sure my son, Dylan and I would be there (of course we will be). I will have room for one or possibly two extra bodies in my car. I could either give JAB a ride or pick someone up from BWI (it's very much on the way). Of course, maybe I should just rent a minivan and drive a boatload of people :-) We'll be heading up Friday evening after I get off work and returning late Sunday afternoon. Zap me a message if you're interested. Given the number of people from this area who will be going, I don't think finding a ride from BWI will be too difficult... Cheers, JudyO |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: Charlie Baum Date: 03 Oct 00 - 09:17 AM Just a reminder that if you haven't yet registered, and you're planning to come, the time to register is NOW! The camp needs to know how many meals to prepare, and the FSGW's lodging czar needs to do rooming logistics. We can promise two-and-a-half to three days of intense music-making, good food and great company. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: GutBucketeer Date: 05 Oct 00 - 12:55 PM Hey Everyone: At long last the stars are aligned, my foot is starting to heal, there are no conflicting workt trips. I'm Coming to the GETAWAY!!!! I dropped my application off at Jennifer Woods' house yesterday (The advantage of living a mile away from "folk epicenter" with the highest concentration per square mile of folk enthusiasts on his continent!). I still can't drive legally so I am looking for someone with room for me and my stuff (duffle, washtub bass, banjo, and autoharp) that can give me a lift. I am taking Friday off and can go up anytime. However, I need to get back sometime late Sunday night. I will glady share gas costs, etc. (JudyO ?) If that doesn't work out, I may be able to use my wife's car and will need people to help drive it up and back. So if you need a ride and are willing to drive an old 91 Toyota Camry let me know too. Since I have never been before what should I bring other than my voice, other instruments, song books, a tape recorder (do people mind if others tape the workshops?), and clothes? Last year I planned to go, and then had to attend a professional conference instead. I can't wait. JAB |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: Ferrara Date: 05 Oct 00 - 01:33 PM I started a new thread for the latest program updates, but forgot to put "Getaway" in the title. New thread is here. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: GutBucketeer Date: 11 Oct 00 - 10:08 PM Refresh: I still am wondering what to bring. Do we need coffee mugs ? Lanterns ? Pillows ? Clothes ? bed lines or sleeping bags ? folding chairs ? What else ? JAB |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: Ferrara Date: 11 Oct 00 - 11:46 PM There will be a letter going out any day now (we hope) telling what to bring. If Mr. Offer or anyone else can find last year's pre-Getaway thread, it had very extensive and complete suggestions for what to bring. I tried to find it but the 'Cat is not in the mood to cooperate (just like a cat!) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: bbelle Date: 12 Oct 00 - 12:16 AM JAB ... Bed linens, blankets, pillow, towells. A coffee mug is a good idea (glad you reminded me). Folding stool is nice. Comfortable clothes. Layers are good. Colorful jammies, in case you have to traipse around the camp at night. Oh, and be prepared to drive off and forget part of what you brought. Looking forward to meeting you ... moonjen |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: Charlie Baum Date: 12 Oct 00 - 09:21 AM Flashlights useful. Most of the campus is a grassy field, with a few trees, and a last-quarter moon overhead later in the evening. Camp Ramblewood has more chairs with backs than Prince William Forest Park (last year's location). --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: bbelle Date: 12 Oct 00 - 12:49 PM Charlie ... thanks for the reminder about flashlights! BTW ... having lived in this area of Maryland, many moons ago, snakes (copperheads) can be a problem. So, if you trampling through the "grassy field" you might think about cutting a "snake" stick. Me, I'm going to find some really sturdy guy to let me ride on his shoulders ... moonjen |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: Tinker Date: 13 Oct 00 - 12:00 AM Okay Moonjen, What's a snake stick? I'm visualizing a forked walking stick. Decades in the woods and I've never seen a snake I had to worry about before. Then again there is always the shoulder ride technique..... Tinker |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: bbelle Date: 13 Oct 00 - 09:15 AM Just a big stick, with which to beat the bushes. Learned this from my father. But I would still rather ride on some big burley guy's shoulders ... moonjen |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: Tinker Date: 13 Oct 00 - 01:43 PM My South Carolinian raised husband who is so graciously covering a home weekend of insanity says boots... tall leather boots... So now you'll know how to recognize me. He keeps mumbling something about it's only three days and what do I mean big burly shoulders.... Tinker |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: Fortunato Date: 13 Oct 00 - 03:21 PM After 45 years of hiking, camping, etc in the Delmarva region I have never seen a copperhead. I have seen two rattlesnakes in that time, both in West Virginia. I don't believe anybody needs a snake stick. Now, if you are concerned with unwanted advances by over stimulated Mudcatters, then a stick might be useful to disuade unwanted admirers. (I always carry one for this purpose). regards |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: Tinker Date: 13 Oct 00 - 10:54 PM Ahhh Shucks, and I thought I'd rationalized myself a brand new pair of boots..... Tinker |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Oct 00 - 11:03 PM First, I'm not going to be there so the chances of an unwanted attack by a 'Catter are reduced by 85%. Second, most Copperheads are starting to slow down by that time an enter the initial stages of hibernation. Third, if someone says they received a call from the police and were told to detain and STRIP SEARCH you, remember what you read in the "McDonald's McStrip" thread and act accordingly. Spaw |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: GUEST,Roger in Baltimore Date: 14 Oct 00 - 12:22 PM Fortunato, When I was a youngun' (and the world has certainly changed since then) copperheads were a common experience in my area. I personally killed (here comes PETA) three before I became an adult. All were within 50 feet of our house. I have not seen one since 1970 or so. Perhaps the population has declined. But, 'Spaw is right, the cool weather that has already begun is sending them into hiding. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: bbelle Date: 14 Oct 00 - 02:36 PM I cannot believe all the stir my snake stick remark has caused. Fortunato, you sound almost indignant. I live in North Florida ... there's Eastern Diamonback Rattlers, Copperheads, Cottonmouths, Coral Snakes, and gators. I certainly don't get indignant when someone mentions this fact. Lighten up, please, it could be a long weekend. jenny |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: momnopp Date: 18 Oct 00 - 07:28 AM Actually, I was kind of looking forward to some "advances by over stimulated Mudcatters". . . See you Friday night. . . JudyO |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2000 PART DEUX From: GutBucketeer Date: 23 Oct 00 - 12:27 AM OK. The 2000 Getaway is now just memories, some pictures, and some great recordings (we hope) Go here for testimonials: See you next year! JAB |
