Well it's not really post-Llanstock yet because they're all still at it! I'm sorry I couldn't make it back today Bron, but I want to be the first on the forum to say thanks for getting the event together. All the Bishops Castle regulars had a great time last night, and you're right, what a lot of talent (especially female singers in my humble opinion). I've got to get the lyrics to the alternative 'Streets of Laredo', ditto and chords to 'Vincent 52' (I used to have one - they don't have keys!). Hope you have/had a blast tonight, and thanks again. Trevor (and Jackie, Keith, Terry, Jude, Glynn, Ann and Chris - yes they were all there on Friday.) PS Come to BC on Friday 27th and I'll buy you and Jim a pint of Big Nev's - each!

(a)They were all arrested and are being held in solitary confinement.
(b) Their fingers were broken by neighbours.
(c) A flash flood came and washed them all away.
(d) Ashamed of their behaviour, they have all gone into a monastery and taken a vow of silence.
(e)?????

(e) They're having too much fun to post messages.

...er, that one's no fun. How about:

(e) They're still trying to remember the words to the 47th verse of Tam Lin.
(f) Jon bit 'em all on the neck and their waiting until nightfall to come out again.
(g) Someone started playing "The Butterfly" and no one can figure out how to stop.

I intend to start a thread on the festival here when it's over. Amazing concert last night with only about 100 people in attendance. :-( Great party afterwards. I hope to run into Naemanson and maybe Uncle Jacques today. Look for someone with a lot of hair and a brand new cold wearing a Mudcat T-shirt.

There will definitely be another gathering next autumn.

Well, I had a great time, even if I could only be there on the Friday night. Well done Bronwen!!! I too want the alternative words to Streets of Laredo ... and am awaiting Patrish's posting. I've also got my Water Feature sorted, thanks to Micca, and know more about Whiskey than I may ever need to know (again thanks to Micca). I also know not to believe Bill Sables when he says to meet him for breakfast at 9.00 a.m. Thought it was a bit 'sus' when he said it!

The singing in the bar was great ... but it was even better in the Women's Loos. Great accoustics! Hope Bill got over his stage fright (honest! but only in terms of his debut as a Caller for Sat. night. ) I await a full report of how the second night went!

Again thanks to Bron. but also to all the Landladies concerned. Looking forward to Bill's charter flight in 2006 ... 300 'Catters to America eh? Where'll we all stay???

Awaiting details ...

sian, west wales

That's IT??? Geez bron....What? Are you waiting to see what they have to say or what? Just a few details or something? Who made it and who didn't....some story or song or something? Hell, this is as pathetic as the guy who wrote of Methusala in the bible....The only info there is that he "lived 969 years and he died." Boring SOB I guess........ How about a little more ... HUH????

FLAMIN' 'ECK!!!!

That was SOME do!!

Very soon there will be millions of photographs flooding the Net!

As Sam commented, the Ceilidh rocked! Sam and the band were mostly responsible for that - we were all knackered after a very lively Drops of Brandy!
Those not at the Ceilidh were in the Red Lion, raising the roof - we joined them, carrying on the noise until around 1:30am...

Some people (mad fools!) continued until very late (early?) in the infamous caravan, but I'll let them confess...

After a late breakfast, festivities continued in the Red Lion, until people started drifting off mid afternoon, and I was one of the last to leave around 4:00pm.

The photographs will convey more than mere words - I'm going to log off shortly, and work on the large collection I have!!

Thanks, Bron (and everyone else!) - brilliant idea, well organised and 'executed'!!

Let's do it again next week!!!

There's a bright scarlet haze on my eyeballs
My throat is as dry as a skeleton's thigh

Oh what a hideous morning
Oh what a hideous day
I've got a horrible feeling......
Everyone out of my way!!

Gomez and I, and our hangovers, wish to report that we had a wonderful time, have arrived safely home and are willing to keep our mouths shut ( you know who you are, Patrish) for a small fee.

It was a very staid affair, mostly quiet singing with a group of friends and a small glass of shandy or lemonade. Though the hours were long and the mixture of people dwindled to a smaller group of harmonious but well intened singers, with the occaisional steady guitar piece thrown in,the evening passed without incident or over the top merriment.

As Saturday approached and the sun began to shine, the visitors silently walked the length and breadth of the village lost in their own thoughts. A small audience gathered at the village institute and sang a round or two, followed by some psalms for the more laid back.

The evening passed quietly with a small group of musicains playing melencholy tunes for a seated and respectable group of visitors and local people from the village who had come to laug*** (Sorry) Marvel at the spectacle.

After the odd waltz, the crowd returned to the local pub inorder to rest their voices and obtain some light refreshment, which included bisciuts and fruit juice. There, they quietly sang some music of solemn resolution and resolved that as the hour was approaching ten thirty at night, an early bed would help to offset the rigours of the day.

On Sunday, all bright and early like young spring chickens on a May day,all awoke with a feeling of joy in their hearts. Then after pleasant conversation and fond farewells, they left as quietly as they had come, leaving only a memory. Bye.

It was a gentle and relaxing weekend.

Eric.

Well... I arived late having overslept, etc got to Welshpool expecting to taxi into Llanfiar Cerinion and found someone (Bron and sister) shouting me as the had worked the train timetables out and wanted to save me that journey.

I got to the do and I was made to feel more welcome than I could belive possible... had a great lunchtime today and was driven back to Chester to help me with trian times by Noreen and Catrin (they left me and then came back and joined me for a drink on the station).

In the middle of it all, I met a delghtful Micca, a wonderful Bill Sables, Bron and Jim were the perfect hosts, then there was Eric the Viking, Sam Pirt, the lovely Patrish ( I had a very enjoyable conversation with her), King Brilliant, Bernard, Terry K, Morticia, Liz the Squeak, etc.

I know I am not talking about the music but I simply could not get over how nice the people were and I guess if I have a memory from this on, it was the parting hugs and kisses. Sorry to ramble on but that was how it was to me - my memory is the people...

Damn! I take it that the Patrish story involves that which she was keeping more or less hidden in her melodeon case? Didn't think she'd actually go through with it ...

And double damn - if you went on that late on Sunday I coulda got back for at least the last throws.

Oh well... I await ALL the Saturday night details...

No, sian, Patrish's story involves absolutely nothing at all except a smile! *:0) We didn't get round to what was (I imagine) hidden in her melodeon case: that was timetabled for Day 4 of Llanstock.

I'm finding it hard to read this thread, and certainly not up to posting anything coherent. Not because of alcohol poisoning, but because my brain is so full of all the wonderful experiences of the weekend, it's close to overflowing. I'm not alone in this, judging by the earlier contributions to this thread (and spillover into other threads!)

Sorry, other 'catters, for the lack of gory details- more will be forthcoming when I've got my thoughts in order. You were not forgotten amidst the celebrations. We were very aware that the Llanstock contingent is just a part of the whole Mudcat family, and many photographs were taken, to share the weekend with you.

I played with a phenomenal scratch Mudcat ceili band,
danced at the ceili,
sang to and with appreciative others,
heard lots of great music and songs (lots of which I want to learn),
and most of all, met a large number of new close friends.

Thank you all, and especially Bron.

Noreen
xx

Has anyone seen my voice? I had one when I got there, barely able to squeak now.....

The shark is better, he wasn't well enough to do anything much Saturday night - he says it is flu, but the fact that his cough medicine is 7.7% by volume, could have something to do with it..... Phoebe loved it, and says she enjoyed the pub best. I don't know what I enjoyed most, the company, the music, the singing or the countryside - all of it is fantastic, and is being immortalised as soon as I can think of a suitable rhyme for side, bank or flows, that has nothing to do with weddings, masturbation or snows.....

Thanks Bron, we'll be back next year!!

It looks like everyone reached their home safely, except Linda, of course, who is still on her holidays! I have to thank everyone for making the FIRST mudcat UK gathering such a resounding success. I can't shake off the impression that the people whom I have spent the weekend with are old friends that I've known for years. We all were able to pick up conversations and discussions that we were all a part of, and talk about absent friends, affectionately, as though they hadn't been able to be with us, but were not far away, and would be here next time we met.
We are all in agreement that the music was first-class, even in the middle of the night, when the traditionalists were singing a cappella in the lounge bar, and the folk rockers were strutting their stuff in the public bar.
Now, 'Spaw, the questions you need to be asking are about the forty-foot trailer, the stone circle and it's significance during the full moon, and the legend of Taliesin. If you can get straight answers about these, then you will have a small understanding of the event that was Llanstock.
Love, Bron.

Bill Sables, Llanfair, Jon Freeman, Bernard, Sam Pirt Gomez, Skipjack K8 TerryK, Linda Matson, Patrish, KingBrilliant, Catrin, Noreen Morticia, Eric the Viking, Micca, sian, west wales, dalek, Liz the Squeak, Manitas. I will post pics. to Pene Azul asap.

Well, what can I say, from the moment we walked into the Red Lion on Friday afternnon and met Bron, Bill Sables Patrish and Sam Pirt, until the moment we walked out of the Red Lion this afternoon at, co-incidentally, almost exactly the same time to come home, it is just a kaleidoscope of images sounds and impressions.
It has been said that it was like re-meeting friends after a short break, is SO TRUE.. there was no moment of hesitation, we KNEW each other straight away, the intros, were, necessary to fix names only, We knew each other already
Some of the highlights; Sam Pirts "show off piece" on the melodeon; Bill Sables Bron is TALL; the finest Scratch Celeidh band ever collected; the wonderful singing of everyone; Daleks playing and singing; and the Blues player;,who played and sang late Friday night!!!!! Bron singing and playing and Jim her SO playing Bass a lot..The Moment when Catrin realised how KingBrilliants name came about; Jon Freemans arrival like the Demon King wet and bedraggled out of the night clutching a banjo case and a camera; Sian west wales WONDERFUL cake and Cookiesand the beer was BEAUTIFUL…and all the people..…,.. and the terrible shock of meeting Bernard, who looks enough like me to be a blood relation and we know a lot of the same songs!!! SPOOKY,
I will draw a veil over the reported events in the caravan as I was not present and anything I say would be hearsay and Gossip.
Bron very craftily drafted me to be moderator in the singaround in the pub and in the hall to marshall the singing order and that materially contributed to me being less drunk then I might otherwise have achieved: Thus contributing to my general health and wellbeing in one fell swoop.
My sincere thanks to Bron and the locals at Llanfair Caereinon, to Buff, the landlady of the Red Lion for a truly memorable weekend.
I have provisionally booked my room for next October.

I've been to festivals - at a festival you can stand in the audience and hardly talk to anyone. I've been to pubs where a session broke out and you may talk to one or two people but are not necessarily part of the crowd (especially as a non-player/singer).

And I went to Llanstock.

Micca said it entirely, that we were all instant mates. I really felt that I knew everyone, that I could talk to anyone at all. And Jon said it too, the parting hugs and kisses, the memories are of the people. I'd only met one the group before (Bill) and I find it amazing how this Mudcat bond works.

Oh and the music. These people are so talented, so enthusiastic. I don't think you could have stage-managed an event more pleasurable, more diverse - full of little pearls of natural music.

I'm overwhelmed really. And I have digital video footage including, wait for it Bron ............ you doing Tarriers which is NOT ON the official video!!

And I promise I won't say how much I enjoyed the nights, curled up in Bron's duvet.

Thanks to all for everything.

Cheers, Terry

Terry, it's funny the instant mates bit. I will admit that I was very apprehensive about going to this do as I was worried about meeting all these people for the first time. I had chatted to several on Hearme but meeting in real life is different. My fears dissappeared straight away and I can honestly say that I have never met a more friendly group of people.

I just wish it didn't have to end - sort of reminded me of the times when I used to go over to Dublin and when the time came to catch the boat, I just wished someone would kidnap me...

I don't know about others but I suspect that it is going to take me a few days to get back to reality after this do. I remeber Alice commenting on the climbig down after meeting 'catters earier this year. I'm feeling a little that way at the moment - oh well, there is always next year...

Micca, so the Feeling Foul went down all right, did it? What about the Owain Glyn Dwr?? Haven't actually wrapped m' lips round that one ...yet, but the Cwrw Haf (the one Thomas Watkins Brewery did over the summer) was a treat.

Noreen, glad that the cake was consumed! The cookies were a recipe from Mudcat ... one of Caitrin's, but I can't seem to find it so here they are as originally posted, with some notes from me at the end...

Caitrin's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:
3 eggs
1 lb. light brown sugar
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 tbs. vanilla
1 lb. butter, softened
6 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
2 12 oz. packages Ghirardelli choc chips (one bag semi-sweet, one bag milk chocolate)I use Ghirardelli because the chips are bigger, but that's really just a personal preference)
5 cups walnut chunks
1/2 cup Kahlua

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350. In one bowl, beat eggs until frothy. Pour into large mixing bowl. Really large. This makes a lot of batter. Add softened butter to eggs. Add sugars and vanilla and mix to combine. Add 1/4 cup of Kahlua and mix in well. Now measure out the six cups of flour, Sifting each cup into a yet another bowl as you measure. Once all six cups are measured and sifted, add salt, baking soda, and baking powder. Mix well with a fork or whisk. Now add the dry ingredients slowly (about one cup at a time) to the egg mixture. Periodically mix in the remaining 1/4 cup of Kahlua. Once batter is done, fold chocolate chips and nuts into mixture. (Be sure to use a sturdy spoon...a friend of mine broke the handle off of a wooden spoon in this batter!)

Line a cookie sheet with wax paper and use an ice cream scoop to drop batter onto paper. (I can usually fit about 6 cookies on a cookie sheet.) Bake the cookies for 15 minutes and let them cool for at least 5 before attempting to move them. Makes about 50 cookies.

Sian's notes: as I was going to test these on my P.A. at work and she's allergic to walnuts, I had a brilliant idea to use hazelnuts instead. I shall think twice about that next time: little b*gg*rs shoot off all directions when yer tryin' to chop 'em. Also, as we don't have any outstanding chocolate chips on this side of the Atlantic, I chopped up Bourneville chocolate bars (semi-sweet dark choc. for you guys Over There). Basically it took me a whole evening just to get the stuff chopped and ready! But, OK, seriously worthwhile in the end.

And Caitrin is NOT lying when she says it makes A LOT! A real lunchbox recipe, or family picnic! Quantity and Quality!

Which one of the trailer trash is going to crack first? I have one mother of a Monday morning depression, inevitable from crashing to earth from such a great height. Patrish doing exotic dances in the nunga punga, and I end up sleeping with an accordion!

At the risk of being boring for the casual reader, magic was there.

Hi

That is true, I did leave the session for half an hour and wrote a tune called The Mudcat gathering, just to be certain we would not forget about it, not that anyone will!!!

I called it 'The Lainfair Gathering', When I got home I put it onto my computer in cakewalk or midi, so anyone that wants it just e-mail me or say in this thread. Do say if you want it in midi or cakewalk.

Obiously it does not sound as good as it did on my accordion partly because I wrote the tune on my accordion.

Cheers, Sam

Sian, Thanks for putting up the recipe for those cookies as rewquested by Noreen.....I know what I'm making tonight! I'm terribly jealous about not being there, but family problems stopped me from even getting out of the door this weekend. Bernard phoned me last night to tell me all about it, I think it's going to be some time before he gets back down to ground level! I'm pleased you all had such a good time, it really sounded wonderful. Best wishes to you all, John

Hi all.

First of all thanks, huge enormous thanks, to Bron for organising the whole thing. The mark of a good organiser is that it flowed naturally & everyone had a great time. So that's you lumbered with the job forever then! And thanks for the offer of accomodation. If only we'd taken you up on it we might never have had to enter the ... the ... trailer ... of .... of .... doom.

Just got into work - but for once I was looking forward to it so that I could read the threads. It was a wonderful weekend & just proved that Mudcat is a huge extended family. Everyone were instant mates & such a lovely bunch of individual eccentrics. Micca & Bernard are indeed spookily similar (as you will see in the photos) - but I don't think Micca dances quite so well!! Amoret was EXTREMELY impressed with your dancing Bernard. One of the biggest surprises of the weekend was that Micca is a man & Patrish & I are women (OK - I knew about me, but lots of people didn't). Liz the Squeak - yes it does become obvious how you got your name - infectious or what!!! I owe un undying debt of gratitude to Patrish for letting us have her room (and making her sleep in with the three men!!) Of course, had we not taken the room 'that incident' need never have happened. But my lips are sealed & I'll not tell anyone what I know...... I do however know what was concealed in the melodeon case (not the melodeon) - I can confirm that it suited Mark very well & he shook it quite nicely actually. I knew he had a talent somewhere. Catrin had me in fits of laughter when she showed Linda what 'being pissed at someone' would mean to the English. I was in danger of loosing control on the way back to the trailer on Sat night, the conversation went like this: Amoret: "There's going to be some people coming back, and we're going to carry on in the trailer" Me : "Oh, we can't be too noisy though, because people are trying to sleep " (that's the responsible mother bit) Amoret: "No, its OK. Skipjack is thinking of doing something quiet and instrumental" Me (choking) : "Amoret, he's an ACCORDIANIST!". It was that night that I heard the sheep bleating up on the hills as I made my way to the secret discrete toilet (I didn't dare use the trailer toilet after what it did to Catrin!). Eric was out there, up on the hills, pillaging the sheep. Enticing them with his wellies. Were they pretty sheep? Did you care, Eric? Did you respect them in the morning? They spoke very highly of you.... I've got loads more to say, but I have to get on & do some work now (grrrr). Mark & Amoret are eagerly awaiting printouts tonight. Thanks everyone for being such great people, and especially for being so accepting of Amoret the MudKitten. She's got her confidence back for singing (it had been trampled by an unfortunate encounter with a school microphone) - and did indeed 'ditch the partner' on Saturday night & sing solo. Now she's eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Uke Banjo which we will be buying from Bill. She was unconvinced by the fiddler idea, Bill - but then give it 7 years or so.... Sorry I didn't do the all-round-the-room hugs thing - but I'm not by nature a big hugger & goodbyes get me all flustered anyway. Its the thought that counts, and I was thinking a big all-encompassing hug. See-ya

Kris

Carol, I suggest a trial visit before you sign up for this asylum. How about next year?

Bill, not a prosaic man, eulogises about the worldwide friendships that have come about through Mudcat, and having Linda to represent the US 'Catters put a lovely dimension to the event, even the tea-soaked late night revelry in the trailer.

Poor, Linda. She borrowed my jallopy to drive the one mile to her digs, and ended up touring Wales for an hour and a quarter, eventually crawling into the pit about 5am! Then she dragged the back axle along the road back to Pippins with an enormous bag full of ROCKS?! And you thought we were strange? Hope to see more of Linda before we give her back.

So, Carol, you must be at least one of the US ambassadors next year. Just get yourself to the airport, and you will be processed by UK Mudcat for the duration of your stay. No ifs and buts, just do as you are bid.

Skipjack

BTW< Sam, that 422 CD is the definitive canine apendages. It is utterly superb from end to end, and I could not endorse it more strongly. Faultless musicians playing with passion. And yes, I'd like a midi of the Llanfair Gathering. That B part is a terror to learn when your mind is stuck in 4/4 time! greg@johnwyattltd.co.uk

Mudcatters; how do they get away with it? Decend en-mass on an unsuspecting, quiet community, behave outrageously, disturb the peace, perform unusual rituals in the dead of night and yet still welcome back next year!
Love to you all. Can't wait to meet you again.

First off I have to say that i had a smashing time and it was great to meet you all and terrible to have to say goodbye. A great big thank you to Bron. I also wasnt to thank the people from Llandfair for all their kindness. Now I expect you want to know the grim details.....
In a previous incarnation I was an exotic dancer. I just couldn't control myself being in the company of such manly beauty(Skipjack, Sam and Bill) So I reverted to type, got me kit off and offered the lads a bit of entertainment. I of course expected them to be gentlemen and remain quiet, how wrong was I. I must admit to being an outright slapper
Now for the truth
The lads got ready for bed and I was tired as a newt and could not face trying to undress in the toilet - no room to manoever especially for one who was not as steady on her pins as I was. So I sat patiently on the bed. When it was lights out and before their eyes became accustom to the dark, I took all my kit off and put my green tartan nightie on, I may well have staggered and this may have been interpreted as exotic movement. I would also like to inform you that I am not trying to outdo the man from sparta with the wind expertise - As I got into my sleeping bag the noise that woke that town of Llanfair did not come out of my bottom, it was the zip on my sleeping bag - OK
"the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt by the heart" All of you that I met touched me heart
Lots of love to you all
Patrish

My dear friends across the pond,

Man alive, I gotta' tell you that I am almost in tears reading this, and I mean tears of joy!!! It is so obvious from your postings that this was a gathering of friends and somehow a bit unlike the US version in that vein that Dick Greenhaus mentioned that the English emphasis is on groupsinging and shared songs as opposed to the more performance related aspects of the Americanized version. I was kinda' struck by Dick's observation, but it is clear here that all of you shared a wonderful time together no matter what you did or how you did it! The enthusiam and the friendship come through crystal clear.

Thanks so much for the photos Bernard and your resemblance to Micca is frightening! Frightens the hell out of me anyway just looking at the two of you!!! I was able to identify a lot of the folks in the group photos, but could you give us a name caption perhaps??

So let's get down to the real Patrish story...........

Nice pics Jon, thanks for catching my Jabba the Hut impression!!

Phoebe is in there somewhere, in the shadows, wearing her black party dress, so she looks like a disembodied head.... I should wish.....

Now my voice has completely gone, see what exposing your chest to a load of Doubting Thomas's does for you!! Skip ~ fellow Radio 2 listener.... you left your chewing gum behind, do you want me to fish it out for you?

And Manitas - wus is spelt wus, not woos. I'm only sorry I couldn't do the dancing - just swinging Phoebe about was enough, moving me about involves written notice and an oxygen tent on standby..... And Bill insisted that he'd never called - he lied!!! He's a natural, and I think we've found a career change for him!!!

As for the accordions - on Friday night in the pub there were 2 banjos, 2 piano accordions and a melodeon - I've never seen so much good quality firewood in one room!! And me without me tinder box!!

Thank you all.

I believe the chocolate chip recipe is in the Mudcatters Just Desserts cookbook which should make an appearance soon, just got to try a few out.....

We had this discussion in a previous Llanstock thread, but it should roughly be Clanvair, but with a softer cl as in pickle, rather than click. Put your tongue tip at the back of your front teeth, where they meet the gums, and say cl without moving your tongue. The air should go around the sides of your tongue. That is the best the English speakers are ever going to get at the LL sound.

A single f is pronounced as v. Two f's are pronounced as f. Don't ask me why....

Phoebe would be written as Ffyby. I think I might adopt that spelling, it can't be as bad as some she's had!!

And it is Welsh.

From the Merriam-Webster website:

Main Entry: welsh Pronunciation: 'welsh, 'welch Function: intransitive verb Etymology: probably from Welsh, adjective Date: 1905 1 : to avoid payment -- used with on 2 : to break one's word : RENEGE - welsh·er noun

A quaint reminder of the mutual respect between the English and Welsh nations that has existed for about 1500 years.

Sounds like we definitely missed the best bits - boohoo - but a person can only take so much. And I had to follow Dalek & his 12 string - intimidating or what? Luckily most were currying when I did my bit so I got away with it.

The thing that struck me was what a smiley place the bar was on Friday, and how easy it was to be part of it. And with so many different accents around I didn't get the usual stick for being 'Black Country' (NB for friends across the water - an industrial area in the English midlands)!

Patrish, where can I get the words to 'Laredo', pretty, pretty please?

Sian, I think I'm at the meeting we talked about, and I missed the cake.

Cheers

Trevor.

Thanks for the recipe, sian, and good piccies, Jon. Love the one of Catrin giving her all! :0)

Amoret, I loved your singing and your choice of songs. Richard Thompson was well represented over the weekend (YES!) I know the feeling that you'll *burst* if you don't sing- the feeling of participating with such a wondrous company is just indescribable.

Spaw, the 'singaround' format seemed to work best in the pub, everyone taking a turn to do their bit. Saturday afternoon we had a concert format in the hall, where people could choose to perform from the stage, with electricity if required.

Noreen and I left Manchester at about 2pm and arrived in Llanfair at about 6. Llanfair itself is one of the pretties villages I have ever come across, nestled in a welsh valley like something out of a storybook. The first 'catters we met were LTS, the shark and the bratling (instantly recognisable).

Checked into the Pippins B&B – which is also storybook-esque – lace curtains and pretty cloths on the tables. (The most wonderful homemade food too – we've booked provisionally for next year!).

Made our way to The Red Lion (a two minute stagger) at 7pm (ish). Welcomes, snogs and lots of "so YOU'RE (insert mudcat name here) – you look EXACTLY LIKE/SO DIFFERENT TO how I imagined" A feeling of warmth and excitement. The night started with Bill Sables, Sam Pirt, Skipjack and Dalek playing some excellently superb jigs and reels with a few songs from Bron (also excellent singer). After that, we went round the room, each 'catter taking their turn to do their piece – either a song or a tune.

I must be a bit of a sad bastard 'cos I actually took notes – I didn't want to forget any of it – I frequently suffer from CRS and there was so much to remember!

This is what I wrote of the songs from that night – forgive me if I missed any out.

Bron 'Jing-a-ling'
LTS – 'Sixteen Stone'
Skipjack – 'Mcalpine's Fusiliers'

Then there was a speech by Bron telling us about plans for the weekend - ceilidhs, walks, lunchtime singarounds etc. Bron asked for a volunteer to organise a collection for the barrel of beer, which she had ordered for the Ceilidh. I offered to do this (don't know why – I think I was overcome by a wave of generosity inspired by the mood). I did not find out 'til the next day that there was no need for the collection. Someone, who asked to remain incognito, had paid for it! A great big heartfelt 'THANKYOU' to that someone…..

Next came Morticia and Gomez singing 'The Bright Lights'
Bron – 'Crazy Man Michael'
Patrish 'Cowboy Outift'
Trevor 'Polly on the Shore'
Micca 'The Hash My Father Scored'
Keith (Local?)– 'A beautiful haunting Spiritual'
Jackie – (Local?) – 'When I was In My Prime'

I went for a natter in the next room at this point, came back to hear people calling on Simon to sing another Blues number – which he did 'Highway Blues'.

Please note, I have not said so and so's rendition of 'x' was amazing. This is because it was all amazing, each contributor with their own style and unique way of performing.

I just know I've missed loads out! Also I am a singer, rather than a musician, so unfortunately I can't say names of tunes. Altogether though, that first night was a mix of slow ballads, comedy songs, chorus songs (which were accompanied by a fine 'cats chorus of enthusiastic harmonies!). An electric atmosphere!

That's just the first night – I have to go now!

Cheers,

Catrin

Highlight of the night? The atmosphere!

Flamin' 'eck! Where did you two go? I left Farnworth (North Manchester) sometime after 7:00pm, and arrived in Llanfair at around 8:30pm...

I agree wholeheartedly that it would be most llunfair to single out anyone for special mention - other than Bron for organising it, of course! - as everyone was brilliant in their own way.

Sorry my piccies are without captions - my short-term memory was messed up by antidepressants, so I avoided upsetting individuals by naming no-one! I felt confident that someone would fix it for me, and they have! I'll update the website soon.

Keep an eye on the Scottish Mudcat Gathering thread, any of you up for travelling to similar weekends. Post ideas to keep it up the ladder! Rob

Max Tone- the prospective Scottish Gathering was mentioned as we were saying our farewells at Llanstock. It would be good if there was some overlap of festival-goers between the two gatherings. I'm watching the arrangements with interest!

Max Tone, the Foel studio is still at Foel, which is 10 miles from here, as far as I know. I hadn't realised that they had such a wide reputation!!!
Cheers, Bron.

I've just got the Midi of 'The Llanfair Gathering' from Sam- playing it takes me back there... lovely. Thanks, Sam! (It sounds good on the recorder too. I tried it out on my daughter's recorder just before she left for school. Now for the concertina.) :0)

Oh Catrin, I wish I'd thought of taking notes. You've just reminded me of loads of stuff! Especially Patrish's cowboy song!!! It was all so good, wasn't it. Luckily my long term memory is better than my short - so in about 2 weeks time most of the weekend should pop back into my head, so that's something to look forward to!! Amoret has started to write a song about the weekend, so I'll probably bring her into the office at the weekend so she can see the Mudcat for herself & post her stuff. I forgot to post a thankyou to be passed on to Buff &tc at the Red Lion, and to Julia & blokie at Pippins - they were all so friendly and welcoming and helpful! And whoever it was that paid for the beer is a true gem.

See ya

Kris

Ah King Brilliant - my notes cannot be so comprehensive - one of the highlights of the weekend was Amoret's singing. For one so young, she has an amazing voice. It does us 'oldies' good to see the younger one's sing with enthusiasm. Amoret- keep up the singing - I hope you read this!

The other younger contributor was, of course, Phoebe (more famously known as the bratling). Her rendition of 'You are my Sunshine' down the microphone on the Saturday was a real treat!

Cheers,

Catrin

Amoret is fully charged with vocal enthusiasm at present. Bursting into song all over the place. She'll be at it again on Saturday at the local singaround. We were outside scoffing fish&chips when Phoebe was on - but we certainly heard her!! Its really nice to see a little'un with the confidence to get on stage and have a go, and she's such a little sweetie! Amoret was very jealous that Phoebe sang on the stage thru the mic & she didn't (oops - bad mother points again). Hey! and less of the 'oldies', we are merely the temporally-challenged. Mature would be a nice word - but it hardly fits does it?

Kris
