Subject: Acoustic Pickup From: GUEST,Tim Kane Date: 22 Nov 00 - 05:38 PM Hi All, I'm going to pasture my old Bill Lawrence pickup and am considering the new Dimarzio Reference pickup as a replacement. Does anyone have any experience with it. Thanks in advance. Tim |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: GUEST,folkcensor Date: 22 Nov 00 - 07:12 PM That's the kind Mooh uses. One of his is a DiMarzio, I know that much. You out there, man? |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: Mooh Date: 22 Nov 00 - 08:19 PM Folkcensor. Mine's not a Reference, just a humbucker with a volume slider on it. Sounds very good. I also have a Barcus Berry single coil, and used to use a Dean Markley. My money, should I ever have some, will be on the Rare Earth by Fishman. I also use mics. Hey Tim, what kind of guitar are you using? Peace. Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: GUEST,Tim Kane Date: 25 Nov 00 - 02:13 PM Thanks for the input, all. I use a Larrivee VCOM-09 Mooh, and sometimes I add a Shure SM 58 mic when I need to acoustic things up. I would like to go with just a pickup if I can find one that sounds natural enough. I've tried a Sunrise and found it a little too electric for me and will check into that Fishman Rare Earth. Regards, Tim |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: Whistle Stop Date: 28 Nov 00 - 01:27 PM I'll add another endorsement to the Fishman Rare Earth. I have the Rare Earth Blend Model (humbucking pickup with internal condenser mike and onboard blend control) installed in both my Larrivee and Lowden guitars. Of all the onboard systems I've used, this is the best so far. It's even better when sent through a SansAmp Acoustic DI, which removes a little of the harshness (it's not as harsh to begin with as an under-saddle piezo pickup, but the DI still smooths it out some). As others will undoubtedly tell you, you'll get a more natural tone by playing into a microphone. But onboard, feedback-resistant pickup systems have a lot of advantages. For my money, this is the best that's come along yet. |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: BlueJay Date: 29 Nov 00 - 01:53 AM Tim- Before making a final decision, you may want to check out If you're going for a natural sound, this pickup can't be beat, even with studio microphones. A growing number of recording studios are using them to record instruments from guitar to violin family instruments. Installation is fairly easy- it sticks on with double sided tape like a band-aid with a wire coming off of it. Mine works great on the outside of my guitars, right behind the bridge, but a more permanent internal application is recommended. Finding the "sweet spot", either internally or externally may require some experimentation, as bracing, top thickness etc. can affect the tone. The company is anxious to help with such issues, I think the Customer Service is unsurpassed be it pickups, cameras, cars, or software. Check it out. thanks, BlueJay |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: BlueJay Date: 29 Nov 00 - 01:58 AM Whoops, I must have screwed up the HTML somehow. That is the longest "Blue Clicky" I've ever seen. My apologies, BlueJay |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: AKS Date: 29 Nov 00 - 03:47 AM Or perhaps the B-Band electret film pickup? That also gives a far more natural sound than the ordinary piezos do. AKS |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: GUEST,Tim Kane Date: 29 Nov 00 - 07:41 PM I'll try to check out all these, if possible and no need to apologise BlueJay, that clicky made a nice, easy target. Thanks, Tim |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: death by whisky Date: 29 Nov 00 - 08:38 PM I put a Fishman in my Yamaha.Very happy with it. |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: tradsteve Date: 29 Nov 00 - 11:43 PM Pick-ups? on an acoustic guitar? Whoever thought of such a crime? |
Subject: RE: Acoustic Pickup From: GUEST,Marty Date: 30 Nov 00 - 01:45 AM When I need to be loud, (but not Strat loud) I've been pretty happy with a DiMarzio Virtual Acoustic (humbucker with volume slider) and a Crate C60 amp reinforcing my Hummingbird. "Tradsteve" notwithstanding, even when there's room for them, I find mics to be a pain and this outfit lets my ears coexist with my wallet. |
