From: GUEST,Pied piper Date: 06 Feb 02 - 08:45 AM The bomdards made in Pakistan and sold by Hobgoblin are usualy playable if the original reed is used but don't seem to want to play in the second octave.I have got one of these down to A using 3/4 sized bagpipe reeds from FCN, and tape over the holes to tune it. good luck |

It's revenge for years of subtle flute playing. Actually in all seriousness I play an oboe and so reckoned a bombarde would be a good progression. The really mean thing is that ultimately I'm not looking for one but two as another member of the band thinks bombarde duets would sound good for the branles and bourees we play. Trouble is we don't want to play in Bb and I just wondered if you could get hold of the animals in D at a sensible price in case this experiment into French haute culture doesn't work Sarah |

They had a band of 12 in a procession we were in, with our Giant,in Catalonia and I could not get my friend to understand instructions tho' I was yelling at the top of my voice( and I am LOUD)from a foot away, they produced temporary deafness.. |

I also have a bombarde in high D but they are very hard to play (perhaps not if you ar an oboeist). If you looking to play historical music as well have you considered a musette? They come in D (low) and are similar to an oboe. I think they can be played with or without windcaps and blend in with other instruments more easily. I think bombardes are great but they are really outdoor instruments and sound best (IMO)in pairs (kan han diskan?)or in bands (bagads). Another possibility is to look outside European culture. There are Indian instruments which are similar so you could try Jas Musicals (I think) in West London and who have a website. I once bought a Chinese shawm from Ray Man's. He has a shop in Chalk Farm Road and used to have one in Covent Garden. I don't know if he has a website. Chinese shawms come in several sizes. You may have to mess about with the tunings on the Indian and Chinese instruments but they are probably far the cheaper option. |

I have a friend who built one - just a steady hand with a drill and a bit of time - you have to fit about 12' of space into a 1' chunk of wood. Now there's a challenge! I took the easy instrument and just made a tabor. Sounds rather wonderful, a good, deep furry vibration. Elaine.

I've now learnt a lot more about the possibilities of pseudo bombardes as well. The Spanish things sound a good alternative in particular - can you buy them from anywhere? Manitas we were thinking along the lines of using them in Kan har diskan with maybe just a drum beat behind but then we thought it might be good to add in other instruments half way along and therefore easier in a key other than Bb. The C looks a possibility but they seem to be dearer than the Bb. Might saunter down to Hobgoblin shop and have a go if they'll let me. I am mortified by GUESTs comments and hope everyone doesnt think I,m being offensive. I really am very grateful for all your ideas.
