Subject: FSGW Getaway 2002
From: Charlie Baum
Date: 01 Sep 02 - 12:20 AM

38th Annual Getaway

Friday October 18, 2002 through Sunday October 20, 2002
(and even into Monday morning, October 21, 2002)
Camp Ramblewood (Darlington, MD)

Get away from it all, at the height of the autumn color season, and make music together with your neighbors and musicians from all over the world. (Last year, people came in from as far away as California and England.) Camp Ramblewood is a lovely spot with lots of inviting places to jam or sing, from first light to the wee hours. There is plenty of beautiful land for walking and hiking and for kids to run around in

FOOD, HOUSING, FEES AND OTHER LOGISTICS

Camp Ramblewood is on the banks of the Susquehanna River just a few miles upriver from Havre de Grace, Maryland. Friday evening is our usual potluck dinner, with foods that change as each successive party arrives. Your registration fee covers lodging in cabins with real mattresses and hot showers, as well as all meals on Saturday and Sunday (and even a breakfast on Monday, if you choose to linger). Or you may come for the day if you are unable to get away for the whole weekend. Daytrippers are offered two meals--lunch and dinner--each day. (But you MUST register in advance if you wish to dine!)

While the cabins have no central heat, we are permitted to bring electric space heaters (as long as we don't overload the fuses for any individual cabin!) Smoking is prohibited in any camp building.

There are handicapped accessible cabins, and arrangements can be made to help people who need help negotiate the slopes of the site, but please let us know your needs when you register, or call the Getaway chair for details. A limited number of vehicles will be permitted to shuttle up and down the hill. And for those who are early-to-bed types (or have small children), a few cabins will be designated as quiet areas, with no singing after 10 pm.

Getaway fees depend on whether you're an FSGW member or not, and whether you're an adult or a child. See the registration form for the fee that applies to you. Fees are determined by our actual costs to run this event--food, camp rental, etc. If you're not yet a member of the FSGW, but you join now, you will pay the lower member rates for the Getaway. They've gone up ever so slightly since last year, but we limited the increase to the minimum necessary to try to break even on this year's event. We've also changed the fee structure to allow full-time students to attend at the same fee-rate as teenagers, to encourage attendance by college-age folks.

Scholarships are Available

We especially encourage families to come, and if the fees seem too steep, some scholarship money is available for those who need help in affording the Getaway, thanks to the Linda Lieberman/David Olive Memorial Fund . If you need assistance, contact the Getaway chair, Charlie Baum at chbaum@earthlink.net or 301-587-2286.

On the other hand, if you can afford to contribute to the scholarship fund, you'll help to interest the next generation in folk music. Remember that we hold a silent auction at the Getaway to help replenish the Lieberman/Olive fund--you may wish to bring items to auction off to help others who can't afford the whole cost of the weekend.

For Children, a Kid-Friendly Environment

Activities for kids will include interactive games and stories and an evening campfire complete with singing, stories and marshmallows. If any parent would like to provide materials for a do-it-yourself crafts table or a toy chest (contributions of out-grown toys) please call Rita Ferrara at 301-946-2161.

Volunteers Are Needed to Help with Some Tasks

We'll also need some volunteers to help out with some chores:

  • We need a few volunteers to help set up the camp on Friday afternoon.
  • We need volunteers to welcome guests and register them and make ID buttons.
  • We need to make sure the dining hall is cleaned up after the Friday night potluck.
  • We need to coordinate and provide shuttle service between workshop locations up and down the hill.
  • We need help to make sure everything is in order when we check out.
Call Rita at 301-946-2161 or Charlie at 301-587-2286 if you'd like to help.

What is the Getaway Like?

For more than 37 years, FSGW has held its Getaway weekend so that members and friends can share music, stories, crafts and dance in a relaxed camp setting. The Getaway is:

  • Music-making under the trees, on the lawn, by the pond, or by the pool;
  • Group singing and jamming at its best;
  • Informal workshops on singing, dancing, crafts and storytelling led by FSGW members and friends;
  • Trying a craft--quilting, basket-making, puppets, and mask-making have been highlights of past years;
  • Great food;
  • A wonderful weekend for the whole family, with lots of special children's activities;
  • A chance to renew old friendships and make new ones;
  • A beautiful camp with modern facilities in scenic rolling hills adjacent to the Susquehanna River;
  • A wonderful chance for parents to introduce their kids to the magic of group singing and dancing--or to discover that magic for the first time themselves.
The weekend starts Friday evening with a potluck dinner. If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three wonderful meals and a midnight snack both days on Saturday and Sunday. Three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast on Monday morning.

Schedule

A schedule of organized events at the 2001 Getaway may be viewed by clicking here. The 2002 Getaway promises equally wonderful programming. On-line versions will be posted as the program develops.

Special Guests

We've invited a few special guests to make sure interesting music happens. This year's guests include Sandy and Caroline Paton, Kendall Morse, Rick Fielding, and the Missing Person Soup Kitchen Gospel Quartet (Bill and Becky Kimmons and Will Fanning).

Fees

Getaway fees depend on whether you're an FSGW member or not, and whether you're an adult or a child. Fees are determined by our actual costs to run this event--food, camp rental, etc. The fees for 2002 can be found on the registration form, downloadable here in .pdf form.

Registration

A registration form can be found in the FSGW newsletter, or downloaded here. It's in .pdf format, which can be read with Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded here, if you don't already have it. You can print it out on your own printer, and mail it in with the appropriate fees.

Facilities

The dining hall, several common rooms, the pub, the drama barn, the dance barn (with a hardwood sprung floor), and the outdoor pavilion offer all-weather spaces for music making and dancing. NO SMOKING is allowed in any of the camp buildings.

If you choose to go to bed, there are more than 50 rooms, mostly in modern cabins. They feature indoor flush plumbing and hot showers; comfortable beds with box-spring mattresses (bring your own linens and bedding). There are handicapped-accessible cabins with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms for those who need them; please indicate any special needs when you register. Cabins are not usually heated (bring warm clothes!), although we will be permitted to bring low-wattage space heaters, providing they don't overwhelm the camp's electrical system (check with the organizers for details). You may also bring electric blankets and the like, and there are electical outlets in every cabin. If you prefer to bring a tent or your own RV, you may do so, and camp on the grounds (no discounts, but you get guaranteed privacy!). If you don't want to sing, there's a pond with boats (and stocked with fish), tennis courts, ball fields, and a trail through the woods to the banks of the Susquehanna. The immediate area offers antiques, history and horse farms. (See more of Camp Ramblewood at its website: www.ramblewood.com.)

Handicapped Accessibility

Camp Ramblewood is on a hillside. Many buildings are wheelchair accessible, though some are not. With advanced notice, we will try to avoid scheduling things you might want to attend in those inaccessibile spaces. For folks who cannot manage the hill, a limited number of vehicles will be permitted to drive about the camp. Please contact the organixer, Charlie Baum at 301-587-2286 if you have mobility problems and would like a Ramblewood handicapped access pass, allowing you to drive up and down the hill.

For further information, please contact the Program coordinator: Charlie Baum at getaway@fsgw.org or 301-587-2286 or via a Mudcat Private Message.

Whooo HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it too early to get this excited?! I've been too busy this year to sing more than twice, possibly three times, but I'm coming anyway to join in on the choruses.

We've already got plane tickets too. Can anyone suggest the best way to get from the airport to the getaway? Is a rental car the only option?

Hey Bill, I was hoping that "rides could be arranged" in some manner. Or at least a carpool or something. I didn't want to put out too much information until I knew there was some kind of opportunity tho. *g* We're getting into Baltimore around 2:30.

well, I know at least one family pitched a tent last year...it is not set up for LOTS of camping, but they seem to be pretty loose about it.

Homeless...2:30 Friday at BWI?...sounds like a distinct possibility..*smile*...I know of several folks who will be going from DC area to Ramblewood Fri. afternoon...including me...... and (Rita) Ferrara & I 'tend' to be early, as she does the workshop schedule, and I just like to be early..*grin*...We have a large van. Ongoing discussions as time approaches (we need to see how many others are flying in and need rides and coordinate)....PMs if you wish..

Vixen & Reynaud usually set up a tent. I'm thinking of doing it this year. There would be a lot less snoring in my own tent.

a few devlish souls debated a "snoring workshop" a few years ago...we imagined going around on Friday night and Saturday night with a tape recorder and taping snores...then playing it back on Sunday and asking attendees to guess the snorers...*grin*....

(I slept stayed in a cabin once with 3 world-class snorers...all with different rhythms and registers..'twas interesting)

Ramblewood may be East of Yuma, but there are good travel bargains available to Baltimore (BWI) on Southwest Airlines.

maybe we can do a satellite link from Sunnycamp....just joking although we probably could..we got some honker something at the WSU station. Someone will have a cell phone and we'll call and we'll see how you are all faring. And Amos and Amergin, within your geographical area that very same weekend is a brand new camp that you can attend for only $50 if you register right now, and you don't have to fly to get there..just a beautiful drive on a guaranteed sunny day. How much is FSGW? I couldn't get the pdf file on my computer. How many people usually go? Do you all cook or have a cook there? (How do you, or do you, handle the blue book question?) mg

Mary, the cost for the entire weekend is US$161.00. That is three nights lodging, meals and all the workshops, singarounds, and miniconcerts you can stand. If you want to come in Saturday and Sunday only, it is about $150.00. Or you can day camp it, but I forget what the cost is. It seems like there are about 200 to 250 attendees. It is an amazing gathering. The FSGW folks are wonderful hosts. Speaking for myself, I have been made to feel very welcome at this event from the beginning.

One thing I would strongly encourage is that Mudcatters that come to this event mix freely. When we do our singaround in the cabin, let us invite our FSGW hosts to jump right in.

And anyone passing through our area on the way there or back is welcome to crash space here with us-- between Williamsport PA and Corning/Elmira NY.

Reynaud and I will be camping again (we can't wait, we can't wait!)

No campfires, and we pitch our tent in the middle of the lawn between the dining hall and the cabins--not a "campsite" and definitely not in the woods. However, by the time the snoring has muffled through the cabin walls, 30 yards of the great outdoors, and the tent fabric, it's sort of like the sound of very large cats purring loudly at some distance, and is not too sleep-disrupting!

Registration going out tomorrow morning!

I've just sent in my money, and since I will be coming from Shepherdstown WV (Cultural Hub of the Western World). I will be passing by Baltimore and BWI prior to the turn North to Ramblewood. Since I frequently do the sound for Scottish Weekend at Ramblewood (which this year is over the Sept 27-29 weekend) I am quite familiar with the location. Depending on what CarolC and JtS decide (see related threads), I may have room for one or two more in my car.

As for those who know me, I have (of course) requested sleeping arrangements on the right side of the cabin line.. ;} ("Right" is subjective in this case, and is determined by the position of the ladies cabins, and (of course) my position with the ladies...)

mg, last year we had about 140 people, I think. It only seems like 250.... Cause we are all in a state of bliss that boggles the mind....

The camp cooks for us. They insist on it. Charlie Baum has done a great job of overseeing the menus and making sure there will be plenty of salads, fresh fruit, and generally tasty, good food.

Yes, there's one campfire area, and an early evening campfire sing for kids on Saturday.

I agree with Mick, I hope Mudcatters who are coming for the first time will be open to meeting and making music with ALL the people who are there, whether Mudcat or not. We do what we can to help everyone get acqainted. It's cosier that way.

Susan/Wysiwyg, Boo Hoo right back, I sure would love it if you could get here one of these days (either that, or if Bill and I could get up there.)

Karen K, I am SO happy to hear that you're planning to be there. Loved seeing you at Mystic.

Has anyone heard if Joe Offer is likely to get here?

Now, I think I'll start a thread about the Getaway program. We need suggestions! -- Don't write 'em here, I'll go now and start another thread.

"The camp cooks for us"..

this is a change from what we have had the most of the last 20 years or so....We had usually had a general overseer and cook, and all adults had to give an hour or two to kitchen duty, but we had some pretty creative menus!!!...This camp does NOT allow outsiders to use their kitchen, so we get MORE freedom (no jockying for best work slots), but more standard menus ..still, it is decently done, and some like it a lot!

I think that I prefer this arrangement 'slightly', as it lets me go to any workshop I can stay awake for and know that tolerable food will just appear!

If we ever went back to the other way, it would be a shock to the system!

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2002

Yep...Friday is potluck...but since we do NOT have kitchen access here, we need to plan stuff that can be cleaned up mostly by simple disposal in trash. That is, we cannot leave lots of dirty pans and such, since the camp does not want to do a big clean up before they do Sat breakfast.

It's ok to bring a pot..but YOU need to rinse and remove it before bedtime Friday...(moving to disposable aluminium, fast food and such may suit some ....and remember if you are arriving 'late', bringing a bit complex dish may be overkill.

Another good idea is having your own plastic mugs for coffee & such...the camp provides, but it is often handy to have YOUR mug to take to workshops and to reduce bouth clutter and confusion over which is which as you move around...

As it turns out, Caroline and I are going to have to miss all the music and madness (what's this shower prancing??) this year. We'll ask Big Mick to pass around replicated hugs to all, while we stay at home with our noses to the grindstone, so to speak. Life is real, and reality often bites.

Micca, awfully sorry you can't make it this year.... But still glad you got here in '01.

Thanks for the kind words about the food, Jed. Charlie Baum is responsible for the availability of lots of fresh fruit and veggies, rather than the usual camp food menu of starch with starch on starch....

Sandy and Caroline, you already know how sad I feel that you can't be there....

I'm reprinting a piece from Charlie's original post WAAAYYYY up there at the top, for context:

Scholarships are Available We especially encourage families to come, and if the fees seem too steep, some scholarship money is available for those who need help in affording the Getaway, thanks to the Linda Lieberman/David Olive Memorial Fund .

===============================

So, since I apparently did a good job of coordinating the Silent Auction last year (note to self: stop doing such a damn good job when you volunteer foolishly for something) I've volunteered to do it again. SHEESH -- some people are just gluttons for punishment!! :-)

What this means: I will be the person who collects stuff that other people transport to the Getaway to be auctioned off. If you want to donate something, live in the DC metropolitan area, but WON'T be going to the Getaway, I can transport whatever you're donating for you (unless it's a tuba).

If you need more information on this, I guess you can PM me or phone me at (301) 589-4008 in Maryland, USA.

As ever, the Getaway is one of my very favorite weekends, even if all I do is sit and bask in the deliciousness of the other people attending.

Peace,

JudyO

Hoorayyyy!!!! It's done (almost, well, somewhat, that is, it will be upon receiving confirmation from all the folks who have to be consulted about the final definition of what they are leading, that is).

Many thanks to Nancy King, who worked with me for several hours this evening. Nancy, I still can hardly believe how much we accomplished.
I have to tell you, we made quite a number of "executive decisions". For this reason, I can't put much of the schedule on-line until folks confirm that they're OK with the changes we made in their workshops.

I already know one probable change: We scheduled Fortunato & Suzette to lead "Old Time Country Music" on Sunday at 2:30. Fortunato, this is due to my rotten memory, I got the days reversed (I do this to at least one person every year....) Will move you to Saturday and move C & W to Sunday if need be.

I sent out a bunch of e-mails and PM's tonight to various workshop leaders, will put up all workshops that have been confirmed tomorrow and will update as frequently as I can.

If you didn't get an e-mail or PM, we have already agreed on what you're leading and there are no changes in your schedule that I know of.

Once the grid is up, you all get to yell about it for about 3 days before it gets cast in concrete so don't panic if we have put you in two workshops at the same time, just give us a gentle hint and we'll fix it, OK?

Or, if we've set you up against one of the sessions you really were hoping to attend, let me know and we'll TRY to fix it.

Thanks again to Nancy for all the help; she's wonderful to work with, she knows almost everyone on the program whether they're from FSGW or Mudcat, she has great ideas and understands the problems of setting up the program -- we are all going to benefit from her input into the program.

Cheers all, will give an update tomorrow,
Rita

Jeri ... Objections duly noted ... I share your objection to the Hill.... Don't know what if anything I can do except maybe you could just stay for the 1st half hour of the Meet'n'Greet then run out on us? Nancy has also threatened to do so.... :-)

There will have to be some shuffling according to a couple of e-mails I've received anyway. But the more I look at it, the fewer opportunities for shuffling meet the eye. Sigh.....

Will do what I can but then some other poor person is going to get their schedule messed up no doubt.

Very glad that people seem to like it over all. now REGISTER, if you haven't already, and be quick about it! :-) It's exactly a week away right about now....

Rita, I woke up thinking about this! 3 workshops all scheduled at the same time include:
1) Who's Here This Year - basically an open sing (or "Meet, Greet and Tweet")
2) Open Sing and Jam
3) Jams and Accompaniment

I'm whining about the one I want to go to, but the latter two are a real conflict. (Maybe not. Maybe all the folks who already feel comfortable jamming and accompanying won't want to go to #3) I don't know that there's any non-jamming thing you could swap into the White House for that time period.

I may conspire with Nancy if I won't get into too much trouble. Joe will be there and <suckup>you and Joe know EVERYBODY!</suckup> (Well, you do.) I guess we'll see how it goes and how redundant I'll be.

What Rita said about registering - JUST DO IT!
There's time enough for everything else but the Getaway is only this one weekend - even though we'll be talking about it for the rest of the year.

Well, Jeri, I agree and sympathize with you. Actually Nancy King doesn't much like having to lead a workshop opposite her son Dan Schatz either, especially since she has a song she wants to do in his workshop.

So we're possibly due for a bit of reshuffling. As to my own preferences -- I can hardly stand it every year, I set up all this luscious stuff and then miss so much of it, either because of schedule conflicts or because I just wear out....

Anyway I'm going to be comparing advantages and disadvantages of shuffling the schedule, versus changing the format of the Meet'n'Greet a little. Here's the picture in my mind:

First, shorten "Who's Here" to an official hour and a half but leave half an hour of free time afterwards so it can continue if it's going strong.

Second, with so many people scheduled to facilitate it, we can be very flexible and let our leaders catch some other music during the morning. How about if we all show up for the first half hour, sort of "Guest Appearances" by the leaders, then you and Nancy can each go to the one session you most want to see? Joe and I will play it by ear....

I can't possibly move the Open Jam from its position because I asked David and Lucy to do it at that time Specifically to give folks a chance to sing in a less structured situation than the meet'n'greet. However I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to move Jams & Accompaniments if I can find a space. Might have to shorten it to an hour.

And we may have another sing-around we could switch with Dan Schatz' "Farmers, Field Hands & Fishermen." Mind you -- I won't want to miss any of the alternative sessions either! Sigh....

What'ever's opposite the Meet'n'Greet needs to be of general interest. We can have three or four "specialty" sessions in the same time slot and be pretty sure there won't be too many conflicts, but Meet'n'Greet is general and there are just two categories at that time period: People who would like to be at the Meet'n'Greet, and people who would rather go sing or play something. Have to give 'em all a place to go.

I hope all you Mudcatters are taking notes. This year Jeri, Nancy and Lorraine helped with the program. The above paragraph gives you a little view of the kind of work we do to keep the program balanced and interesting all day long.

Next year we'll again need help on the program -- one person can't keep it to this level for years on end, I promise you. We could sure use some public spirited folks to provide input and maybe make a few phone calls next year or do some of the e-mailing....

End of commercial.

I'm going to take the rest of the day off to tune my zither and harp and get my glad rags together, because this afternoon and evening Bill and I are going to help celebrate the wedding of CarolC and Jack the Sailor. *BG* Is this not a fine thing to be looking forward to?

So no Getaway schedule changes will take place before tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.... But in the meantime I'll be scheming and planning and figuring about possible reshufflings.

I need to give Ramblewood reasonable accurate figures as to how many are coming, so there will enough food for everyone. If you haven't registered yet--
you need to let us know NOW!
Check the registration form at http://fsgw.org/getreg.pdf and fill out a copy for yourself. Then e-mail the registrar immediately with ALL of the information requested on the form. Once you commit, we'll expect payment, so consider it a financial obligation.

I hope to have a reasonably accurate count by Sunday night, Oct. 13. After that, you might need to come as a daytripper (i.e., we can't guarantee enough food, so you'll have to bring your own or go down to Havre de Grace to dine.)

I have been looking forward all year to this and to the opportunity to see so many of you again. David C. will also be attending. If any attendees have a bent toward bluegrass, please get in touch with him. He'd love to jam with you.

More time for jamming, and anyone with a good scary song or story can scare the folks around the campfire with Joe Offer!!

Should I wake y'all up with a rousing rendition of "Rise Up Early In the Morning Shake the Devil Out Your Soul"?. I'm sure everyone at the Mudcat Cabin will have gone to sleep early on Friday night in order to be well rested for the fantastic schedule that Rita has lined up.

Rita,
It is probably too late for this suggestion but perhaps the Meet and Greet could be held on Fri. night say from 9-11pm or 10pm-midnight. Then Sat. would be free for the other workshops. I'm thinking that enough folk make it on Fri. night. Just a thought. We have such a great song swap on Fri. after dinner anyway.

Just a few more days. I can't wait.

Dani, It seems to me that when we were doing the original line-up of possible workshops someone asked me to include Scary Stories.

Would you like a break this year? Can drop it for now if you like. And do you remember -- Nancy asked me where it will be held -- was it in the Theater Barn last year? (Maybe it was Lorraine who said she thought it was a perfect venue. Can't remember.)

Anyway I'll be putting in about 10 revisions later today, so if you'd like to skip it this year just e-mail or PM me, or post it here. Taking things out is easy. Putting anything else in right now would be darned near impossible.... And it would free you up for the late night stuff.

Karen, It's "traditional" to have a late-night Friday sing and I wouldn't dare mess with that. Some folks really like the Meet'n'Greet and I think it's especially nice to let new attendees introduce themselves. We're cutting it back to 1 1/2 hours, with a free half hour after it so it can go on if that seems appropriate. Maybe this workshop has outlived its usefulness. If nobody comes to it this year, I guess that will tell us something.... :-)

One of the paradoxes of the Getaway is that by leading a workshop you restrict your choices. And there's always so much tempting stuff going on! -- But then, if nobody lets themselves be tied down to lead a workshop, there won't be all that tempting stuff going on, will there? Sigh....

Okay, got to go, I have to get to work revising that program grid :-)

I've gone from not having any conflicts to conflict at almost every point!!!!!

Okay - I'll admit it - some of them are because I saw stuff I didn't see the first time I went through the schedule. WOW! What an incredible amount of stuff being offered this year.

Why in HELL would someone post a scare message trying to keep people from the Getaway???.. We can't stop doing everything in life, and the Getaway is as safe as any place in the state right now.

By the way...there are some updates/changes to the schedule...check the thread

Re: the silent auction... Rob (JtS) and I will be donating a case of Sleeman Silver Creek Lager (brought by Rob's father, Skipper Bob, all the way from beautiful Guelph, Ontario). It's brewed in the proud tradition started in 1834, small batch, craft brewed to the finest of standards. Canadian beer at it's best. We'll be on the lookout for other stuff to donate as I pack up this Shepherdstown apartment for the move to Georgia.

Because of an overtaxed brain the last few weeks, I'm not certain of which days and meals we registered for. I'm pretty sure we're registered for Friday night and Saturday night. I don't think we're registered for the dinner on Friday evening, but I'm not sure. Who would be the best contact person to find out for sure what we've registered for?

Thanks!

CarolC, You don't have to be registered for Friday's dinner, it's a potluck. Helpful if you pick up a bucket of chicken or something on the road, though....

MMario, post the things that are conflicts for you, either her or on the other thread: Schedule changes thread. Or, any of you can PM or e-mail me about conflicts and frustrations with the schedule.

Nancy King is coming over again this evening so we can incorporate everybody's pleas, gripes and complaints into the schedule if possible. IT CAN BE DONE! (mostly....) so speak up. If you have a conflict, chances are other folks will, too.

too-scared-to-go, you're an idiot. Since when has Aberdeen, MD, been in the Washington area? There aren't any strip malls within half an hour's drive of Camp Ramblewood. That's part of its charm! ... And no sniping incidents within a 2 hour drive of it, if we don't count your post on this thread....

So holler about your scheduling conflicts, folks, that's why Nancy is donating another evening to it, because we want to make it the best most satisfying weekend we can manage, for all of us.

I don't think anyone should avoid coming because of the serial sniper, but for those coming from the South, I would make these few suggestions.

Gas up well before you get to Fredericksburg, VA (two sniper incidents, the last guy did not heed his friends who gave him this same warning) Don't stop for gas again until you have passed all of 495.

Don't make any public stops (i.e. restaurants, shopping malls) until you have left I 495. You can stop and pick up friends at their houses in relative safety.

These are not major inconveniences. As Bill D. said, you're odds at being the next victim are slim. As he also said, no one's been shot while driving their car.

Reverse the rules for your return trip. Gas up before you reach 495. Don't stop again until your well past Fredericksburg.

The sniper has taken weekends (Sat. and Sun.) off so far. He's attacking every other day, so Mon (already happened), Wed. and Fri. are the crucial days.

Roger in Baltimore

CarolC, your Silent Auction gift is generous, fantastic, wonderful -- and is going to make us a mint for the scholarship fund I have no doubt.... What a neat gift.

Speaking of neat gifts, Jed Marum is sending another one. Should be here tomorrow.

His new CD isn't out yet, so he's sending us 10 pre-release copies with special liner notes that say "2002 FSGW Getaway Release." He has signed the liner notes and Rick and Mick (!), who are also on the CD, will sign them this weekend.

Is this not fun? Unique stuff, to be sold to the 10 highest bidders....

And we'll have some copies of Jed's first CD, at $10 apiece, and also 5 copies of the first program in Jed's new radio series. It's called "INTO THE WEST: The Celts in Texas" and is a live recording of a show he did in Dallas.

Here's a helpful hint for people who can't get the on line schedule to print (only the left side prints....):

If you have a fairly recent version of MS-WORD [yes, I know, it's a swear word, like BS, but tough....] I repeat, if you have MS-WORD, you can do the following:

1. On the web page with the Saturday schedule, click on "File...Save As" and save the Saturday page on your computer. Note which directory you're putting it in! -- And note the name of the saved file.

2. Do the same for the Sunday schedule.

3. Open WORD, then open either one of the web pages you just saved.

4. Click on "File.... Save As". This time, down below the file name where it says save as Web Page, click on the drop-down menu and change the type to Word Document.

5. Now WORD will print the file correctly. Have already walked a friend through this process so we know it works.

Just a geographical correction--Darlington is a little North and quite a bit East of Washington, DC. The rest area where the snipers were apprehended, west of Frederick, is a little north and quite far West of Washington DC, and much closer to DC than to Darlington.

Fear can be a useful thing when you know exactly what to avoid, but that kind of fear is counter-productive and debilitating. If "too scared" has ever been to the Getaway before, they would know my wife, Ferrara, is never 'vindictive' about anything.
She was VERY uneasy about that sniper, especially since 6 of the incidents were withing 5 minutes of our house! but she had enought common sense to know that trip up to Darlington was 99.999% safe and that bad drivers were a FAR greater threat!

Grow up...and if you want to debate it in person , I'll bet you can find me.
