I'm curious to know what music we play with Mudcat. You might think of this as a bit like a "Come as you are" sort of party, but with better taste. What music are you playing (CD, tape, vinyl, ...), if any, while you read this?

I'll admit that I've got a Clash compilation "Super Black Market Clash" on, along with the Tiger's game.

You caught me in an unusual situation, Will. Right now, I'm listening to near-silence, the sound of the blower on my computer. I almost always have music playing. On the top of my stack of music to listen to is the "Money for Nothing" CD by Dire Straits, since Alison happened to mention them the other day.
Come to think of it, I wish this computer were a litter closer to silent. Wouldn't it be nice to have a computer that didn't make noise?

Glad you asked. I am listening to a fourty+ year old recording of Brendan Behan singing the folksongs of Ireland a cappella. He has obviously been into the crather as he was making the recording, and he sings "The Aul Triangle" on the tape. It is over an hour of him telling stories and singing songs. Very unstructured. The poor quality of the recording adds to the charm. Which reminds me of a story about the Behan's, if you would all be so kind as to indulge me.

I heard the story from Liam Tiernan (one of the founders of Barleycorn) when he was last in my precincts. Apparently he was very close to the Behan's. He tells the story of how Stephen Behan, who believe or not really enjoyed a proper jar of the old dark stuff, was cautioned by his lovely wife, Aul Katch (Old Kate for my english speaking friends), not to spend the day in the pub as she wanted him to dig the garden for planting. Then off she went to work. She wasn't gone 15 minutes, and Stephen was in the Public House enjoying a jar of the heavy. Next thing he knew, most of the day was gone by and he hadn't put the spade to the first shovel of dirt. Now Aul Katch's temper was legendary and he did not want to face her after her warning him that very morning. So he hit on the following idea. He placed an anonymous call to the RIC barracks and informed them that the IRA had a cache of arms buried behind a house in the neighborhood. Then he gave them his address. The lore is that within 20 minutes they pulled up and dug ferociously for the arms, found nothing and left. When the good woman got home, she was pleasantly surprised to find Stephen putting the finishing touches on the sod.

That's Tiernan's story, and in the tradition of my people, You tell it and I'll swear to it.

I don't know whether you really want to know what I've been listening to lately, but here goes.

The last one was Skunk Anansie: Stoosh (a sort of punky gutsy rock band with attitude and a sense of social justice), Kavisha Mazzella: Mermaids in the Well (an Australian/Italian/Bulgarian(?) woman with an amazing voice and a wonderful mix of ethnic styles), some African music, some Moroccan music, some flamenco music, some classical music (Bobby McFerrin: Paper Music, Vivaldi: Four Seasons) and to top it all off a really incredible techno-percussion group called Leftfield, which my boyfriend won't even listen to because it's techno.

Tenterhooks - Jez Lowe & the Bad Pennies. Some great songs by Jez on this album.
By Land And Sea - Tom McConville & Pauline Cato. Tom McConville is just so different.
Anything by Les Barker/Mrs Ackroyd Band.

I'm at work now, but as soon as I reach my Home Sweet Home I will undoubtly listen to Old Blind Dogs and Tannas, then I think it will be Vopli Vidoplyasova last album and a wee bit of Georgian folk by Merabi Kashiya. And fall asleep with Erin the Goddess theme from Lord of the Dance Soundtrack. By the way, does anybody know the words for it :-) There are some like "I wish, I wish, I wish ..." :-)

I am listening to a terrific CD...Ancient Voices,, an album of Medieval Russian Music.. Glorious Stuff. I was listening to the new June Tabor album which I don"t like at all. Is it just me or is June Tabor getting to be a bit of a bore these days. Saw her in St. Ives last Spring and was disappointed then as well. I also like to listen to Mary Jane Lammond while I"m typing away.

Having a computer that makes CDs I sometimes make compilations of my favourite tracks. The one I have on now has > 70 mins of Celtic music, the track playing now is "The Five Pound Flute / Donald McLennan’s Exercise / What Pain I Have Endured Since Last Year" by the Old Blind Dogs. (And the original CDs are all my own!)

Well, the old CD player currently has two by Ian and Sylvia ~~ Northern Journey and Four Strong Winds, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, the Buckhannon Brothers of St. Louis, and Songs of the Civil War in it. Clean Living is (or rather was) on the turntable, and the cassette player has Karen Kraft and The Dixie Darlin's of Mt. View, AR in it. But really, lately I have been listening mostly to old time music on the internet from Phil and Gaye Johnson, especially the show with David Holt.

I have a CD player that holds 150 CDs. It contains folk and rock recordings from the 50's through the 90's and country and blues form the 20's on. There's a little bit of bluegrass, some Australian bushbands, some maritime, Edith Piaf's greatest hits, and a recording of Scott Joplin rags. I most often set it for random play so I don't know what is coming next. It's like a radio station with an infinite playlist and no disk jockey.

I just tapped into this computer/radio site. It is pretty good. A lot of ancient "humor" pieces from the time of the great folkscare and a few more recent. All in all, a pretty good mix of new and old folk and folkstyle music.

The last tape I listened to was The Deseret String Band (local, but I believe they are known somewhat outside of Utah) and Smoky Mountain Hymns, a compilation of hymns performed on hand crafted instruments: banjo, dulcimers (both kinds), mandolin, guitar, etc. The next tape is one Murray sent me to test my lyric-interpreting ear: Charley Patton, King of the Delta Blues. (thanks, Murray). I guess he was the king before Robert Johnson was.

P.S. Big Mick, great story. I've seen it before in other contexts, must be folklore;-) I recognize the word 'crather' from the song "Finnegan's Wake". Could you tell us what it means?

I'm on my lunch hour, so nothing playing in the background. However, I just added a new song to my family songbook from an unusual (for me) source.

Heard Randy Travis on Good Morning America the other day, singing a GREAT song called The Hole. Finally found it on tape, so this one song cost me $10, but it makes a great bluegrass number. (My first/only Randy Travis album). You can listen to it at http://www.randy-travis.com/you.htm

How funny! It sounds like some of us are probably listening to the same things. I want to check out the Ancient Voices Cd that aldus mentions.

In my CD changer I have Greg Brown's Slant 6 Mind, one of the Sandy Denny Retrospective volumes, Leonard Cohen's more best of collection, Tom Waits The Early Years Vol 2, and Kate and Anna McGarrigle's Matapedia. All I need to do now is hit play. I've been sitting here listening to the traffic noises.

I've been looking at those 150+ CD changers Earl mentions. I like the idea of putting everything in there and hitting random play.

The last things on the CD player were Jean Redpath's "Songs of Robert Burns" and "Old Time Banjo" by Reed Martin, a Wash DC area fellow who seems to have won every clawhammer banjo award and contest known..he is UNBELIEVABLE! (and all the tunes have a real story of how he learned them and such!)

The last 33 1/3's were "Yehudi Menuhin meets Ravi Shankar" and "Ballads of Alaska" by 'Uncle Bob' Pavitt, featuring a sterling rendition of "When the Iceworms Nest Again"

next in line are "Introducing the Beers Family" which I found in a 2nd hand store, and four 10" LP's of Richard Dyer-Bennet!!..

Hi Jon, "The crather" is a way to say "the creature" which refers to whiskey, and most likely John Jamesons very finest Irish (is there any other) Whiskey. Oops, my bias is showing. I believe it comes from the West of Ireland, as my Grandda, who was a Galway man, used it all the time.

At the moment I'm dubbing my "Mind Games" mix - I put together a mix of Celtic/Folk and Classic Rock and am going to drop it off in the mailboxes of a few teachers at my school with a note saying "Let me know if you like the music" and an Email address.. just for fun, to see who responds. The song currently playing is "Reinventing the Wheel", a beautiful little folk song by a local group. Anyone want the lyrics? The song right before it was "Wilderness" by Clannad, the one right after is "Time In a Bottle" by Jim Croce

Joe, Wish I could tell ya when it might be out! Andrew Calhoun (Waterbug Records)wants it to be out by the Fox River Valley Festival (Labor Day) but I kind o' doubt that. Got much to do and need to go to Mayo Cl. for a few weeks first--then maybe a voiceover for a docu-thing on Civil War reinactors---so stuff's on hold.

Johnnie---GREAT TASTE! All are grand! Cindy is the only other voice that EVER was on any recording with me. She sang harmony on a version of the Texas Rivers song that was re-written for IL & WI. (other than that one cut it was just me and my instrument.

"Master Of The Sheepfold" , as I was told, was found in Maine by Bill Bonyun. He sang it to Susan Richardson who took it to the New York Pinewoods folk camp in Massachusetts. Jerry Epstein, at Pinewoods, taught it to me. Driving back to Chicago after Pinewoods that summer I stopped to hang out with my old Chicago friend, Cindy Mangsen, who then lived near Albany, New York. I showed that to her then for the first time. Later I changed the language of the song from the very heavy Afrom-American dialect I'd learned it in----"Massa Ob De Sheepfold" became "Master Of The Sheepfold". I think it's now twice as beautiful as it was before. And Cindy & Anne make it sound like an angel chorus! To make this fit into this thread I ought to let you know I'm listening to Cindy & Anne's CD right NOW!

I have heard James Keelaghan live several times and will go put the CD on in a minute, just as soon as Richard Thompson You Me Us is over.

I heard his record on the radio in Northern Minnesota, and then saw him live at the Winnipeg Folk Festival a few years back. I was really looking forward to his mainstage performance -- sort of the grand ending to a glorious festival -- following his set, he was to lead the assembled crowd in a bunch of tunes, including my favorite, Mary Ellen Carter. However, the nasty weather that had been threatening finally broke and he cut his set short and sent us all scurrying back to our campsites. Thunderstorms and tornadoes in Manitoba are not to be trifled with. One of the sound towers was knocked over.

I saw him most recently in North Carolina at a Holiday Inn (!) on stage with a bar on the far side of the stage with NASCAR racing playing audibly throughout. He was a good sport about it.

I haven't cranked up the old CD player since getting home, but I checked out what I was listening to most recently. There is Chuck Brodsky's "A Fingerpainter's Mural." He's a current singer/songwriter with a sense of humor and also an affection for baseball. I plan to learn his song "Blow 'Em Away," a song about roadrage that is politically incorrect. "I rolled down the window, took out my pistol, and I blew 'em away."

I listen to many current singer/songwriter's, the troubadours of today who create the folksongs of tomorrow.

Next to that on the carousel is Robert Johnson's "The Complete Recordings." Maybe I'll learn something by aural osmosis. I am too embarassed by my guitar playing to try to take on any of these classics.

"Wake Up Dead Man," a collection of 'Black convict work songs from Texas Prisons." Again, a renewed interest of mine. Perhaps I will learn one of these as well.

And finally, my 21 year-old son has left a copy of Everclear's self-named CD. I know I wasn't listening to that.

Just back from Pittsburgh with a treasure trove from Dave's Dungeon on 4th (or some such, I was paying more attention to the music than the name). I've got Jez Lowe's Tenterhooks playing, with the Who (Face Dances), Tannahill Weavers, DiFranco (Not so soft), the Farina's, Buffy Sainte Marie (Coincidence), the Rankins (North Country), Patti Smith (Waves), and Pete Townsend (PsycoDerilict) lined up. I'm not sure I'll get to bed tonight!

Is someone keeping tabs on the responses? A statistical analysis would be interesting. We could sort by performer, composer, genre, input (many CDs and a few LPs), day of the week, etc.

Just got back from a lunchtime concert by a local Celtic band, Shanahy. Nice stuff on fiddle, guitar, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, whistle, pipes (possibly Scottish smallpipes?), bohran. Nice Celtic weather, also - cloudy, breezy, cold, threatening rain.

Next up: a tape of Tenpenny, another local band that plays Irish/Celtic trad music.

First thanks everyone, my list of music to buy has grown, I completely forgot about James Keelagan. The Grace Family cover his mine song, and it's one of my favorite.

I went to put on Outright Bold Face Lies, but ended up with "That's the Ticket" We should start a thread of the singing takes me back... Whenever I hear the record I go back to the North Country Folk Festival in Ironwood. A short lived but awesome festival. Camping on Little Girls Point in July in a tent with temperatures in the 40's and Lake Superior churning iron red. But Art, why did you perform the Craig Johnson songs backwards on the record?

I am listening to: Doug Geeting "Between Flights" Unplugged and Grounded Acoustic Guitar

Doug is an Alaska bush pilot who has obiously put in many long hours working out the intricacies of the picking of Mississippi John Hurt. Doug does his fine picking and singing between flights to Mt. McKinley and other targets near Talkeeta. Since he flew me onto McKinley and we later played at the Fairview Inn 'til the wee hours, I have listened to his CD many times in the past three years. Yes, Frankie Armstrong is wonderful in person. I recall seeing her at the Vancouver Folk Festival about 15 years ago, doing a workshop of Brecht and Weill songs with Dave van Ronk. Truly wonderful.

Hey Will, I was there too, do you remember Frankie and Martin Carthy and the WAtersons and, I think, Leon Rosselson and Roy Bailey all singing Azekatarle on one of the small stages?
Or the bellydancer at the party the first night?
One of the friends I went with worked the festival and his job was to keep Dave vR supplied with boose, way he tells it he didn't see much of the festival....
Also have an indelible memory of Frankie striding out to the end of the floating dock at Sweetsmill and jumping off into the lake, by herself. Thought to myself that I'd like to have that much courage if I were blind...

At the moment I'm listening to a King's Singers album .. they do all-vocal arrangements of everything under the sun, from madrigals to jazz to pop to sacred.. the song I'm on right now is "Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon. The song right after is my favorite of the album, "That Lonesome Road" by James Taylor and John Groinick. And by the way, anyone know where I can find an original Taylor version of that?

Well, the good news is my ll year old daughter not only listens to the Beatles a lot now, but also has for about 5 years, and loves them.
The bad news is she also swiped my Dazed and Confused CD with oh, such wonderful groups on it as Alice Cooper, Foghat, Lyrnyd Skyrnrd and Black Sabbath. Hey, what can I say? I wanted some DANCE music, and now she's checked out the video of it which is full of casual kid cruelty (to each other), drugs and **** words.
But yes, the early Beatles in particular seem to be very popular with the young teen set today.
She's got my anniversary compilation Beatles CDs in her room and I have to keep asking for them back.
And since we don't have TV, she's still only getting a miniscule dose compared to what most kids get. I don't like it, but I think she's got a right to know about this stuff.

Barbara, yes, I remember Roy Bailey and Leon Rosselsohn as part of a small-stage workshop with Armstrong. Bailey's voice was especially powerful.

I also recall thinking that Dave Van R was well into his cups, especially by the time of the main stage show that night -- your friend did his job well. (Out of curiousity, who was your friend? I used to know a few of the people who hung around the the Folk Festival crowd).

Just dug out my "Songs of Bertolt Brecht" tape, which is playing now. Armstrong and Van Ronk singing (separately), with Rosselson also playing on Armstrong's songs. They recorded it in Vancouver, I think originally produced by Festival Records.

Great straight-forward singing and basic accompaniment. Armstrong and Van Ronk's voices and styles suit Brecht.

Van Ronk: " ... and if someone gets kicked, that will be you."

Armstrong: "...my son, if you think I brought you into the world so painfully to have you lie under it so meekly and ask for more ..."

Van Ronk's version of Mack the Knife doesn't sound much like Bobby Darrin, or whoever it was did the top-40 version in the 60s.

Seeing your name reminded once I put together a challenge cassette theme tape for 45 minutes of music on fruits and vegetables. The woman I gave it to had a blast, everything from Vegematic, to Strawberry Fields, but I did slip in Oats and Beans... Beans are a vegetable aren't they?

Listening to Len Wallace, Great singer,songwriter, and storyteller. Politics are progressive, and he does it all with an accordian. Unbelievable. I drop in to this topic just to listen, and share everyone elses fun, but the northern michigan topics brought back some recollections. North Country folk fest, early eighties, at Gogebic comm. college. Folk dancing at the Armory in town....also... reference harpgirl to hanging with Linda Siglin...I logged more miles than anyone but the performers...getting to the Ark...and the folk festival...missed the first two. Used to live in a cultural wasteland...now if you are in northeast Michigan in the winter, check out the monthly events put on by the Corsair Trail ski counsel, held Nov.-Mar. in the Catholic church social hall in Tawas City. Art, I wish you well, didn't know of your condition, do you still have that dog...the one that was so good that when he was rabbit hunting, he got on two tracks, so he split himself in half and caught both of 'em?

I have to say I've been listening alot lately to Hans Mayer's Kid's CD See you Later Alligator. My seven year old wants to hear it over and over and over. The song about the imaginary monsters that kids see is excellent, and the "cover" of the girl scout tune of "God Bless my Underwear" gets many requests of AGAIN, again and again.

He's from LaCrosse, and played on recent Bill Miller recordings. His tune of "what you goin do with the babysitter" sung to the tune of "what you goin do with a drunken sailor" is excellent, but I think he wimped out and didn't put it on his CD, TOO Politically correct. Heck half the folk songs handed down wouldn't make it past the PC crowd.

Hey Art, thanks for Grand Marais. You're taxing my memory for the melody now.

Harpgirl, How did ya know I'd pilot the Julia Belle once in a while? Jokin' & singin' on that boat was the best job I ever had!!! Didn't even mind it being a 16 hour day.The Julia Belle Swain was sold by Dennis Trone---the man who designed and built her. Had to; the gambling boat competition got to be too much. But he's still running his boat the Twilight. Piloting the Julia Belle Swain was like riding an elephant---at least that's what it reminded me of---slow & ponderous yet majestic and wonderfully imposing! The slap-slap-slap of the paddlewheel was like the beating of a heart!

I got the wanderlust a few years ago and took the Julia Belle Swain, bingo cruise, I wasn't ahold of the tiller, and didn't see a barge with a ratchet-bar, it's all hydraulic now. I did spend a couple hours in the pilot house. They were that tourist friendly. Gives you a great feel and appreciation of the river, and how that part of our history might have been. On the other hand, bucolic it ain't. They ought to ban jet-ski's from operating in the same hemisphere as a sternwheeler. Right now I'm listening to Billy Bragg, Mermaid Avenue. The jury is still out, but to paraphrase the blues guys, they started out on billy bragg,(rock and roll) and then moved on to the harder stuff.

It's time for bed, but I've been listening to David Wilcox's Big Horizon. By the way I saw him a few weeks ago at the Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD, and he did Chuck Brodsky's road rage song. What is it? "Blow Him Away", "Blew Him Away", something like that. Somebody from Baltimore mentioned the song a month or so ago. Before that it was Sy Zentner's "Desifinado", an LP from the 60's, and my weekly taping of "Traditions" Mary Cliff's fine radio program.

This is Roger in Baltimore, the guy who mentioned Chuck Brodsky's song. I've only been to the Ram's Head once to see Loudon Wainwright III. It's a bit pricey for me. Nice place though, and a diverse offering of live music.

Hey northfolk,

I work and perform mostly in West and Central Michigan, with the occasional gig in SE Michigan (Detroit)area and once or twice a year on Beaver Island at the Shamrock. That is with my group "The Conklin Ceili Band" (the name is a story in itself) which obviously is an Irish group. I also do the occasional labor gig where I sing the music that helped define our movement as well as the music of the struggles faced by the everyday working person. After over 20 years in the movement, I have about a million stories in my head that I want to set to music, but I am just learning how to craft a lyric. They will be there though, because the stories they tell are too important not to tell.
