I'm looking for the lyrics to a scottish song (gauging by the acent of the singer) whose title I cant guess and words I can just barely make out (a very bad tape). The first line is something like...

"Ah tell me what was on your mind"

And I think theres a later line going something about wilde geese flying with their beaks out to sea...

Not expecting to find out, but I'm having no luck doing a search for the above lyrics.

Also, for what it's worth, the song has a "feel" of something more modern... hope that helps...

I think this is the song you are looking for. It is one of my favourites. I transcribed it from a Jeannie Redpath album of poems set to music, but I don't know who wrote it.

WILD GEESE

Oh tell me what was on your road ye roarin' Norland wind?
As ye come blowing from the land that's never from my mind
My feet they travel England but I'm dying for the north
My friend I saw the silver tides run up the Firth of forth

Aye wind I ken them well enough and fine they fall and rise
And fain I'd fee; the creeping mist on yonder shore that lies
But tell me as ye pass them by what saw ye on the way?
My friend I rocked the roving gulls that sail about the Tay

But saw ye nothing fleeing wind before ye came to Fife
For there's much that lies beyond the Tay that's more to me than life
My friend I swept the Angus Braes that ye havna trod for years
Oh wind forgive a homeless fool that canna see for tears.

And far above the Angus straths I saw the wild geese flee
A long long skein o' beating winds with their heads toward the sea
And aye their crying voices trailed around them on the air
Oh wind have mercy hold your words for I dare not listen more.

Regards
Marion

I wouldn't have thought it possible from bits and pieces of verses, but that certainly does look like it. Thanks so much, this has been driving me crazy...

jbuscher & guest Q

If you type Wild Geese in the Lyrics and Knowledge box, you will get loads of information including a transcription that is more Scottish than mine, and the tune.

Enjoy!
Regards
Marion

Marion, it is not in the DT. I checked several Wild Geese threads and came up with several songs with that title, but missed the post by George Seto in thread 45223 (11 Mar 02).
To link with that one by Jacob and Reid: Wild geese (Norland)

I think the original title was Norland Wind.

V 2 l 2 should be
And fain I'd see the creeping mist ...

Seto had "And fain I'd feel the creeping mist..." Either one works.

The first time I discovered it I was in tears. I heard it from Cilla Fisher, and Artie Tresize. I've always wished I could sing it but even though I can put on a bit of an accent, its too broad scots for poor me. I had to content myself doing renditions to myself.

Try the above link. The words are by Violet Jacob music by Jim Reid and sung by lots of people.
Hope this is of some use
