May I be the first to wish everyone, English non-English alike, a happy St George's Day. Celebrate it in style.

Thanks EP. It's good that someone recognises it! I get really p*ss*d off that St Pat's Day is celebrated with such vigour but our poor old patron saint is mostly ignored. Wear your red roses with pride!

Happy St George's Day to all ze Englanders! May your lance never blunt or droop.

And happy nameday to me too. And to all the Georges out there. May those that love us rejoice, and may the bottoms drop off those that hate us (literal translation of Greek wish).

There's likely a saint for everyone under the sun. Clever marketing strategy by the ancient fogies of Rome. All that aside, and to the extent that saints' days celebrate the goodness of people, "Bless 'Em All" (literally).

...and I am St George, that noble champion bold
who with my trusty broadsword won ten thousand pounds in gold.
It was I who fought the fiery dragon and brought him to the slaughter
and by that very token won the King of Egypts daughter...

Enter the black prince of Paradine...

Whoops! Sorry! Already done that haven't we:-)

Happy St Georges day everyone (In England AND Russia!)

Cheers

Ah, Isabel, you just unfortunately included George W in your wishes...never mind.

All this wonderful fuss for a Turk who never probably set foot on English soil, and killed a mythical dragon. Then again, you guys adore Richard the Lion Heart, who spent about 9 months of his entire reign in England, and never bothered to learn the language!

Who says you are an insular bunch? Happy St George's..xx..e

Richard the LH didn't need to speak English: everybody he was likely to speak to could speak French!

We had our St G's celebration last night at Bedford FC, with plenty of un-pc songs.

Liz,
Hooray for Sainsburys. A red cross is just the ticket on such a day, especially since rumour has it that St.George was quite partial to hot cross buns.

Well that's your oven busy for the next 14 weeks.

I am by nature a dragon, so yes, I agree with Tracey.... not at all happy about dragon slayers (it's why I never shop in Marks & Spencer) either, metaphorical or not.

What's all this about red roses? Is it some sort of plot aimed against us Yorkshire Folk? I think we should be told.

The red (wild) rose is an English national symbol. We have two on our kitchen table right now. I actually prefer roses to waving flags around --prettier and more subtle.;)

Anyway rather than winge about no one celebrating, do what we do and go out on a huge night, EVERYONE suited up with a rose. Love too.

When will we get a bank holiday to celebrate (get pissed)it? I drink plenty of whisky and then guinness on the appropriate dates but I need an excuse to get more real ale into me. Should it be an electoral manifesto issue?

But this year the calendar was kind, and St George's was on a Saturday. I celebrated it by watching a local Morris side, then playing the Turkish Knight with the Herga Mummers at the Queen's Head in Pinner, and then spending the next 11 hours ensconced there with La Inglesa, HergaKitty, Tim F, Dan McKinnon et al, supping some fine Youngs Special, singing our hearts out for ourselves and for the chock-a-block appreciative audience of that fine establishment, and generally wallowing in a benign, celebratory atmosphere. Well done the Queen's Head, pig roast and all, for putting up something special for the day. And well done the 200 or so revellers that went through its doors yesterday.

Knackered home at 1am for a double shot of something with Dan and a natter, bed by 2:30am, up at 8am without a hangover!

Yes, it was a grand St George's Day!

Oh Greko - I would have loved to have seen that! Did Manitas do his sweep bit OK?

I sat in a pub garden and had chips and beer... French Fries with mayonnaise and American (Coors) bitter. The chips were wonderful but the beer was horrid... all taste up front, nothing to savour and it didn't even get me warm and fuzzy.
