Subject: BS: Eagle Eggs Ready to Hatch--LIVE From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Apr 06 - 07:17 PM Some of you checked in at this site at the first of April and a few have checked back. I am absolutely hooked and have been a daily watcher. Tomorrow is the scheduled hatching day for the first of the eggs. It may seem silly but millions of folks around the world are getting a live and close up view of something a very few people have seen. I've learned much about eagles and I am looking forward to watching the cicks grow....providing everything goes okay. Last year both chicks were lost to a virus but the success of this pair over the years is impressive. Hancock House -- Link to Live Cam They share nest responsibility, You can recognize the male as he has a thicker but shorter beak than she does, his feathers are smaller and a good bit smoother, especially on the head. He is smaller (hard to tell unless they are together) and his eyes are far more "hooded" than hers. There are some screen shots over in the forum there that can help. He also seems to like playing interior decorator and plays around with the nest material an awful lot. There are also some screen capture of some cracks in the eggs. They have had problems with the great numbers of hits they have had to adjust to on the fly as it were. If your browser cache is pretty full it can cause a problem too.....also your connection. I can't really see the difference when they aren't together. I have a dial-up so I keep getting booted out. He was on the nest, then I heard THUMP THUM (I think the camera is sort of a perch) then I saw her land by then nest. Then I got kicked out. Whe returned, she was settling in. I sighted an egg, which she moved a little bit, then slowly settled on. She did this weird sideways rocking. Now she's just sitting on the nest, moving her head around. This is addictive. I think I might have some paint I can watch dry though. It's SO frustrating to keep getting stalled! |

Tris comes home everyday and tells me he saw the eagles at school. One note here........Last year both of this pair's chicks died of a viral problem. It is also said that as pairs age they become less successful and this pair has been together doing very well at almost two chicks every year for 19 years in the nest they are in. Soooooo...........There is some chance that only one or neither of these two will make it and according to those in the know, that possibility grows with age. Don't want to be a wetblanket here because I am hooked on this cam but just wanted to let y'all know. Jeri, don't forget the real thrill at the Crazy Horse webcam!!! Subject: RE: BS: Eagle Eggs Ready to Hatch--LIVE From: JudyB Date: 27 Apr 06 - 11:25 AM Michelle (and anyone else interested) - The first grade class might also like watching the eagle nest in Maine - that nest has three downy chicks who seem to be doing well, though the littlest one may have trouble in the long run if the parents can't provide enough food for all. However, this pair has had triplets before (the article doesn't say if all survived to adulthood), and we do seem to be having a mild spring, which should help. These chicks hatched the week of April 10 (or at least the first two did - watchers only saw the third one last week - or maybe I should say only saw three at once so they knew there were three last week). The camera angle isn't as good as the one in BC - but the chicks are very cute. Enjoy! JudyB |

The largest one is becoming a bit of a bully (as is unfortunately often the case in nests with multiple chicks of different sizes), and no one has seen the smallest one since the big one attacked it yesterday. I've seen two eaglets in the nest several times today and they've just looked cute and fuzzy and peering about over the edge - but there's no guarantee that the big one won't be picking on the medium one when you tune in. There hadn't been any previous reports of violence, and I was hoping they wouldn't go that way - there's a nest in West Virginia with three chicks that hatched in late March, and they are all apparently doing well after some rocky moments. But I guess that's not going to be the case for the Maine eaglets. They still are terribly cute, and it's a great opportunity to watch eagles at home - but I'd suggest checking to make sure all is peaceful before showing the eaglets to young children. JudyB |

Nothing moved for what seemed like an eternity. Then I saw "the guy". For one frame. Then he was gone. Pretty damn riveting, I can tell you. The eagle thing must be overloaded. It's really slow today. I don't see any eaglets yet. |

Now, the site looks like it went down. You think they had any idea they'd be attracting people from all over the globe? It's not like I don't have anything to do. This is me watching eagles: Click 2 minutes later, I get a picture that freezes 2 minutes later, that hunk of grass/leaf in front of the nest moves 1/16th of an inch and it freezes 3 minutes later, I hear possible eagle noises, but can't tell because nothing's moving 1 minute later, I hit 'refresh' 3 minutes later, there's a different eagle on the nest. Possibly, it's still rocking/settling in on the eggs. Picture freezes. 4 minutes later, a dog barks and a feather moves minutely Picture freezes The funny think is, their forum's almost as slow. I have a dial-up, but I figure these generous people never knew how popular birds sitting on a nest in a really big tree were going to be. |

One of the eggs does have a hole in it but still no eaglets. I think it must be the male sitting on the nest at this time. Certainly alot of nest cleaning going on. Seems to be moving lichen and moss around. Maybe making it nice and soft for the new arrivals. I hope that hole isn't the result of a marauding crow. Seems to me that the hole has been there for a few days. I'm waiting to watch the feeding of the eaglets once they are hatched. I wonder if the parents will bring a nice, juicy 'possum for dinner. |

Ravens are capable of making the same sound but I think it's an acquired skill. One poster in a local apartment shows a large regal eagle glaring out. The caption below says: I am smiling. In Juneau Alaska we see many eagles but that webcam is still fascinating. Interesting how serenely the bird sits on the nest. |

Doug Carrick the main Eagle wrangler admitted that he and his wife were both fooled by a piece of fluff around one of the larger holes. Mom and Dad have both been extremely active and there are some who say that's anticipatory and others who say its because something is wrong.......everybody has a different opinion of course. It may mean that the lttle hatchling wasn't strong enough to break the shell. It could also mean that a raven has found the nest. As I said, I did see the nest unattended for awhile. Less than a minute actually. Maybe it was the changing of the guard. I hope at least one eaglet survives. What is really amazing is watching them learn to fly. |

Did see the adult eagle get up, roll the eggs (including the one with the hole in it) pad the nest with more fluff and turn his head into the wind. I wonder why? Also, it was neat yesterday to both of them with beaks partially open as if they were panting, which indeed they were. Like dogs, they don't sweat so it adjust their temperature. I wondered what was going on with the two gigantic yawns which didn't make a sound. ...and yes, both eggs have holes in them. I thought maybe the eggs were between the wing and the body so the hatchlings could breathe but I guess not. They seem to roll the eggs around a bit. I even saw it tuck the eggs under its neck. Somehow I thought they would hatch all at once, within a matter of minutes. I guess I was wrong.......... |

Subject: RE: BS: Eagle Eggs Ready to Hatch--LIVE From: JudyB Date: 30 Apr 06 - 06:43 PM I've been following the "expert" discussion - 35 days is average, which makes the first egg 3 or 4 days overdue. However, last year's eggs in this nest took about 38 days to hatch, and it can be as long as 45 days (though that's not common). The second egg is at its due date now, though again another 3 or 4 days is not at all uncommon. Once the chick starts breaking out of the shell, it may take 12-48 hours (or possibly longer) after the first hole before the chick emerges. There is also a theory that the initial black spots that were assumed to be holes might have been muck or something - one of the eagles returned from hunting with some black gunk on it, and that might have gotten on the eggs. I'm not sure if there's agreement among the experts as to which of the visible marks are holes; most of the posts call them holes, and it seems likely that some of them are - but it seems unlikely that both chicks would have started making holes at the same time as the eggs were laid 4 days apart - giving weight to the theory that one of the parents should have taken a shower before returning to the nest. Guess we'll find out eventually. There was a news release that one of the eggs had hatched - it looked as if the head of a chick was coming out, but a later review of the film showed that it was some moss stuck to the egg. I doubt if the follow-up story got as much press. Must admit I do find the site rather addictive, and am watching a couple of other sites where there are hatchlings of various sizes - the oldest of which are beginning to try wing-flapping exercises. |

I still have some hope but very little that the remaining egg will produce. Carrick and others have noted that as eagles age they have more problems reproducing...just like us. This pair has had a very successful history. If a pair only reproduces themselves once, that is enough as someone else said. I think this pair has had 15 or more eaglets so they've done their job. I don't know if the experts running the site will be able to see anything in the overnight tape (I'm guessing they tape at night but don't stream it - doing a rerun of the previous day's tape seems more interesting than watching a slightly lighter spot on a black screen that might be the head of a sleeping eagle). I think I also read that last year's eggs hatched but the chicks died after a few weeks. JudyB (still hoping....) |

One of the eggs was due on April 30, so if it's the one still being sat on, it's only 2 days over, but they're calling it infertile because it doesn't show any signs of hatching. The egg definitely has a hole in it and it looks bigger than the last time I saw it. I don't have much hope for an eaglet but at least the eagles are still caring for it. They haven't pushed the egg out of the nest just yet. If they still have hope, so do I. |

I think I watched one of the eagles making a hole yesterday. My guess is that they pushed the rotten eggs down into the holes. I hope we are able to watch next year. I learned alot. |

General consensus is that there never were viable chicks inside - the eggs were probably infertile, or else the eggs died soon after conception. What looked like a hole may have been the shell starting to rot. The parents removed some of the shells from the nest and may have buried other pieces - probably to keep other predators from coming to check out the smell. Watching the process with the second egg made it more obvious that the same thing had happened with the first egg, and a review of the first few minutes after the camera came back on after the first egg disappeared showed what were likely pieces of shell in the nest. (This is based on reading a very long thread - egg turning frequency - where many of the people who seem to know about things post - I'm not an expert!) Those who have seen the tape from last year noted that the parents started stockpiling food before the eggs hatched - the fact that they didn't do that this year makes me think they never heard any pre-hatch pecking from inside the egg - supporting the theory that the eggs were never viable. As others on the forum there have said, it makes me feel a little better to think that we didn't lose two eaglets because there were never eaglets in the eggs to begin with. The crew behind the web site have found another nest with hatchlings and are in the process of setting up a camera, though the view won't be as clear - they need to have the camera far enough away to not disturb the nest. It won't be the same as the eagles I watched now and then for the better part of a month (and kind of bonded with, in a strange sort of way) - but I'll probably check out their new site when it comes up. And they're also talking about a grizzly bear cam - I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to be the one to put a camera in a grizzly bear nest, hibernation or not! |

I have to admit I was slightly disgusted to think that eagles might canibilize their own offspring. I guess thats one way of getting rid of a rotten egg! I think the cams are much more informative than zoos. I hope zoos and aquariums are phased out as this becomes a more popular way of learning about wild animals. I found it fascinating. |

Subject: Problem with Eagle Cam? From: JudyB Date: 18 May 06 - 01:25 PM So I admit I'm a bit addicted to the eaglets - most days I check in on them in the morning when I log in. This morning when I clicked on my shortcut http://www.infotecbusinesssystems.com/wildlife/default.asp, I got a page from DirectNIC.com, which I think is probably their web host - and it said "The Requested URL was not found on this server." That worried me - I occasionally get "timed out" messages when the servers are busy, and occasionally "server not found" messages when they're working on things - but this sounds more as if the web hosting company had pulled the plug on them. However, being a bit persistent, I called Hancock House (which is the eagle experts part of the project and which has an 800 number) and the woman who answered the phone said the site had been down earlier in the day, but was working now. She had refreshed her browser and you can see things moving, so it seems unlikely she's seeing an cached page. But that was over an hour ago, and I still can't get on to any parts of the Infotec site. So my question for other eagle watchers is - can you get on? I know I have an active internet connection (I'm typing here) and I know our IS people haven't blocked us from streaming content as I can still see the Maine eagles. And I tried using the same link the woman at Hancock House used, in case something had been changed. Hancock House is (I think) in BC, as is Infotec - but if there's something preventing US users from contacting Canadian sites, I shouldn't have been able to get to Hancock House either (and I just went to a Canadian TV station site to be sure). He must be well into his 60s now. I had the great privilege of accompanying him on an expedition to capture grouse as part of an biodiversity insurance project in 1989. The camera's actually 80 feet away on a crane - don't remember the details, but it's a type of crane that's relatively quiet to minimize disruption when it was brought in, and they had the animal protection people on hand during the whole procedure. The plan is to reduce the zoom a bit as the eaglets get bigger, but for now they have a tight focus on the part of the nest where they spend much of the time. By the way, I can see them fine from home - it's just my computer at work that appears to not want to watch any more. :( |
