Yesterday I was waiting on my beautiful slim wife who was in Zellers in the Westmount Shopping Centre. As I sat there waiting I could not believe the amount of young women pushing prams who had simply let themselves go to seed. Big fat shapeless asses pushed into tracksuit bottoms. I have family photographs from the days before TV, sofas and junk food - many from the 1920s and a few from just before WWI.

Know what? Barely a skinny woman in them (well OK, there is one woman who resembles Twiggy, but she died of leukemia 6 months after the photo was taken). Compared with my ancestors, I look like a half starved waif.

These were working women - dairymaids, seamstresses, parlour maids, cleaners, servants and farmers wives - no sitting around watching TV, no hamburgers, no doughnuts, no glossy magazines telling them how they should be.... they were all real women, with real lives and real bodies.

A funny thread, indeed, and I enjoyed a lot of the witty contributions.

An observation I made as a young man in a German town with a US garrison: the American soldiers' wives were visibly stronger in the lower parts of the body. Now by the global expansion of Macdonald's, Burger King et al. we can observe the same phenomenon with our women over here, too. About other countries I can't say so much, but the beautiful British female Mudcatters I have met at Hull are - how shall I say? - at least unfat.
But gentlemen, what is wrong with a well (or more) rounded lower end? It is appreciated since the early stone age, as shown by a 25.000 year old statuette, now preserved in the Vienna Museum of Natural History (back side not shown, unfortunately). And they had no fast food chains.

Luckily we all have differing views about the beauty or otherwise of the human form. Whilst aesthetics does matter to some degree I do try to look at the PERSON inside the body rather than the wrapping.

Saying that, I would agree that there are quite a lot of people who could do with covering up their weaker points. Conspicuous wobbly bits on either male or female don't really do anybody any favours.

I presume that Canadian Observer, Frank Joiffe and assorted Guests would be able to provide photos of their own svelte good looks. Put up or shut up boys!

Skinny models in advertising have warped the image of "ideal" women. It is totally unnatural for women to have the figures of adolescent boys. If you look inside the fashion industry, you realize that designers consider models "hangers" for their clothing creations to hang on for display. The focus is on displaying fashion creations, not having real women wearing clothing that fit real women. The models themselves don't really look like their photos. In the art department, their legs are extended to unnatural Barbie doll lengths and all kinds of adjustments are made to waists, breasts, necks, etc., before printing and publication. There is a backlash movement now with some companies using real women in ads without computer distortion.
That said, we are almost all affected by extra weight as we age because metabolism slows over time. Processed food and too-large restaurant portions combined with sedentary lives don't help us be healthy.   For the guys complaining about having to look at overweight women inappropriately dressed, check out all the overweight men inappropriately dressed.

All women that I know are beautiful within, that's all that counts. If you go through the members photo's you will see we have really lovely women, each and everyone of them(Sent in my photo three months ago, didn't appear !).
The mature women turn heads, the fashion industry women who send these skinny women onto cat walks aren't skinny themselves.

All women have beautiful qualities, it's great discovering them.

Given the effects of medication and age on meself, I certainly am in no position to talk about women. But this discussion raises a much larger issue. What is the role of physical looks in the larger issue of beauty and desirability?

I know that for me, looks play a part, but not a big part. Neither does age. How many times have I sat and just been completely enamored of a mature woman, long in life experience, self assured, talented, and just been completely attracted to her? There is a group of Mudcat women that I have never met 3D, but based on their sharing of themselves here, their views, that I would love to have dinner with, and I could care less if they are wide, slim, blue, black, yellow, grey, one legged, five legged, gay or straight, Catholic, Protestant, Agnostic, Wiccan, or Atheist. They are so fascinating to me that I just would like to share time with them.

I guess if that is the purpose of this thread, to encourage one to examine shallowness, and reassess what constitutes real beauty and attractiveness, then I am onboard.

As I work in advertising and also am a graphic artist, I know first hand how much images are manipulated.

HERE IS A GREAT EXAMPLE of how a photo is completely retouched before going to print. Gives you an idea of how different the actual bodies and faces of models are different than the photos we see in print.

Interesting thread! A lot of truth in there from all sides.
Some observations from the last 12 months.
We went to Telford last spring, I can honestly say I had never seen so many overweight people in one day as I did in Telford Shopping centre.
My darlin' Sheila had some kind of stomach bug last summer and was off her food for about six weeks. In the end I had to give her quite a talking to. At our age, losing weight from the face is not a good move, you never put it back. And, as I told her, her bum started to feel like a bag of spanners,(Happily, that has recovered.)
Comment about Foot sizes is interesting. S is UK size 41/2B, and the only place we can buy shoes the right size is on the internet. Most shops now think that D is a narrow fitting!
However, what goes round comes round, As Liz says, Rubens would have loved present day asses.

LtS, maybe there weren't many *thin* women back there. But that's the same way that (until WWF and body-sculpting) you didn't find a thin wrestler. I'd lay any amount of money that those women had muscles on their muscles. Not sculpted like your gym-goer, but *strong*.

And I'd also lay long odds that none of them were anything like the size of the aisle-bollards that you see in shopping centres these days. The women who can't actually walk because they're too fat to unstraighten their legs, so they kind of lurch along by leaning alternately left and right, like walking a wardrobe round a corner.

There certainly are men who get themselves grotesquely fat too, but it seems to be rarer for men to get to that kind of massively obese stage than women. It may just be down to the fact that men generally burn more calories per day than women, I guess. Certainly men are taller, but even allowing for that, I've never seen a man where two of them side-by-side would block a supermarket aisle. But I've seen a few women that size, and I've seen plenty more who are well on the way there.

And we're talking morbidly obese here, right? It's not like having a few pounds to lose - we're talking 50-100 pounds to lose. You don't get that by accident.

That's what surprises me, you know - the fact that they don't seem to realise it. I noticed my waist band getting tight last year, so I decided it was time to start doing more exercise and keeping a closer eye on what I ate. Emma had the same experience this year. But when you can't fit into size 20 clothes, either you're about 7', or you've got a serious medical problem, or you've eaten so much food and done so little exercise that you've made yourself dangerously fat. Given that the first two are maybe 1% of the population, that leaves all the other fatties as the authors (or consumers) of their own disgusting shape. And sorry, but that much fat really is disgusting (whether it's on a man or a woman).

Lest people misunderstand, I like a well-rounded female body. I can't stand these stick-thin creatures they say are attractive. But there's a difference between "well-rounded" and "morbidly obese", and that difference is about 50lbs of pure fat.

Flash Company remarks on finding a lot of overweight people in one shopping center....

I do find that certain areas/situations are different. A number of years ago, a friend & I had occasion to be on two different college campuses on two successive weekends.

In Fort Collins, Colorado, we were amazed by the number of slim, 'cute', coeds wandering about. The next week, in Omaha, Nebraska, we were startled by the proportion of ummmm...'hefty' coeds in tight jeans.

Now, we didn't do any fancy demographic research to figure out the realtionship of town and school to relative figure type, but it 'might' be interesting. I have read that the deep south, with certain dietary habits, has a larger proportion of...well, largeness....and I'm sure that educational levels are relevant too.

Maybe there's a thesis there for somone.

it's true, people are getting disgustingly fat and unfit.

Part of it is that people just have no real idea of correct nutrition. Or exercise.

If I were running things (as would be sensible) I'd mandate proper school meals being served in all schools, and teach nutrition and physical education (in a larger sense than just gym - I'd give a real education on the needs of the body) in schools and to adults.

Guest 2.36 pm - of course there is a connection between calorie intake and weight although, as someone who suffered a severe emotional trauma and lost over 2 stone in 3 months while consuming the "reccommended daily intake", it is not so obvious as we might assume!

The problem is that the preoccupation with an unobtainable (for most people) "ideal" does appear to be making eating disorders worse - if I might quote from the above (rather lengthy article)

the same article also reinforces the dreadful effect upon the physical and emotional health of children as young as 10 that jacqui refers to!

I read an article in my local paper some time ago about obesity which suggested that almost a third of the women in our town were obese. Looking around after this I realised there must be some truth in it.
What I find strange is that some of them are my friends and I had never noticed! Perhaps that is because it does not really matter one way or another how heavy or light or fat or thin people are......
Are the people on this thread who are critical of overweight people the playground bullies of the past when there was maybe one of two overweight kids in the school. Shame on you! Let he/she who is perfect cast the first criticism.

Mike, don't be fooled - it really *does* matter. Check the stats for risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes caused by excess body fat, and you'll see why it matters. Excess weight is every bit as damaging to your health as addiction to cigarettes, drink or drugs. They're all hard to kick once you've got in that state, and there may be societal pressures that make it more likely for some people to resort to these as a distraction from everyday life, but ultimately it's *your* choice to get in that state in the first place, or *your* inability to recognise that your behaviour has got to that dangerous point. For drink, it might be inability to do without a "breakfast beer". For fat, it might be inability to walk a couple of miles, or inability to fit into clothes with less than a 50" waist.

In the UK, fat people are directly pushing up your taxes by increasing the cost to the NHS in treating these conditions. In the US, they're pushing up your Medicare bills. Let he/she who has to pay the health service bill for Fatty's various lard-related illnesses cast the first criticism. And in that spirit:-

"Get some exercise and quit eating cakes!"

I think you will find Mr Red was referring to the size of a woman's feet visa vis age. The referrence to shoe sizes on offer in shops is clearly a coded method of saying "average" which hardly describes one woman but does refer to "women". And does imply that the "average" size of all parts of human anatomy is increasing.

One third of women are overweight? Hmmm, I've been doing a little private research over the last couple days. Of the 11 adult women in my family, 4 (or approx 36%) are noticeably overweight. At the mall yesterday, of the 37 women (including teens) I saw, 9 or 25% were overweight. And watching the passersby on my street last night I counted 9 adult women, 2 of whom were overweight. That's less than 25%.

According to my local unofficial observations, on average, 25-36% of adult women are overweight. So if you find the looks of them so awful and offensive, how about directing your gaze to the other 63-75% instead? Presto! no more EEEEEEEEWWWWWW.....

Minding your own business would no doubt spare you all that useless negativity and irritation too, makeing you a happier, more pleasant person to be around.

Graham - where does that argument stop? Do we say the same of smokers, alcoholics, drug addicts, speeding drivers..... You could even have a case against sportsmen of all kinds for the sports injuries that take up medical time and money, and what about those gardeners?

The one person who is really affected by obesity is the obese person. I would agree that this is of concern from a general point of view as it does not bode well for the health of the next generation, who, we are told, may be the first generation of childern to die before their parents, but I would take a guess that, in the majority of cases, those fat people would be happy to lose weight. Problem is, with the myriad number of 'miracle diets' that have been in circulation for so long a lot of people have f****d up their metabolism and have lost the will to try again. That, along with the societal pressures you mentioned can make it very difficult to get back on the wagon.

I think a crucial factor here is to increase education in schools about proper nutrition. We could also do with less of the fancy cookery programmes that seem to saturate the media and get back to showing that a healthy diet can be interesting. Unfortunately it seems,from looking at the contents of supermarkets,that the 'good' foods are less advertised and more expensive than the crap that really has less nutrition value than the calories it contains.

If you want support to try and lose weight it costs - Weightwatchers and others of their ilk are not free. For those on a tight budget this is not something that they can easily finance and the same goes for gym membership. Many GPs in the UK don't have the time or resources to give the kind of support required here.

Education has got to be the key. That and allowing less advertising of the junk food that seems so attractive, and so cheap. Maybe advertisers should have to state the true calorific value of the product that they are advertising and compare that against the reccomended daily calorie allowance for the average person. That might just act as a short sharp shock for some.

Include pictures of crying families at funerals, absolutely miserable-looking people shaped like billowing mounds of bread dough with their rotten teeth falling out, covered with skin eruptions, in hospital beds wired up to a room of monitors etc etc etc.

Hey, while we're at it how about making it a law to paint 3-D pictures of mangled bodies and smashed wrecks on the hoods of all new cars? And red-letter warnings on all the gas pumps too ie

But there was one (formerly and oh so very VERY slightly) fat-bottomed girl heavy on my mind as I rode. By the time I got back, I'd come up with this ....

This generation of kids in both North America and in Europe are the first generation of kids that are expected to have SHORTER life spans than their parents..... Sedentary lifestyles, garbage food and other things that make people fat are the biggest reasons.

Yep, certainly do. In fact, there was a local radio ad over here that I heard not long back saying "I do my bit for the local hospital - I don't drive over the speed limit. On average, X more people are injured due to speeding, and that costs Addenbrookes Hospital £Y extra a year."

I don't mind saying that I do adventure sports. But I wouldn't mind paying some extra on my tax to cover that, if there was an option to do so. I already have a higher rate on my life insurance and accident/illness cover, and that's fair enough. Ironically though, adventure sport participants rarely die through that sport, and are generally fairly healthy anyway. Fatties almost always die as a result of fat-related illness though.

You see, that's the problem - they all want a miracle, and they're not prepared to do sod all about it. This miracle diet, that miracle pill, the other miracle surgery. The one thing that really would be a miracle is if every last one of them put less calories into their system than they used up.

This doesn't mean gym membership or Weight Watchers. It means not eating at fast food joints - which in itself will *save* you money. It means exercise - walking for an hour every day would be great, and it requires not one cent in expenditure. A day's hiking each weekend would be even better. It means eating food that doesn't have high-fructose corn syrup in it. It means eating food that will fill you up without adding vast amounts of calories - home-made wholemeal bread is a classic place to start for this, and if you can't be arsed with kneading the dough (which is exercise in itself) then a breadmaker is cheap. It means not eating food that won't fill you up and *does* add tons of calories - ice-cream, chocolate, any kind of candy or dessert.

If they were addicted to drugs or drink or cigarettes, I'd have some sympathy. Those things get you addicted on a chemical level. But "addicted" to food? That's not an addiction, it's just a habit, and breaking a habit is simply a matter of caring to do something about it.

Last year, a young woman who is close to me lost 85 lbs in less than 9 months. She really needed to lose it -- at 5'7 her present 125 lbs is much healthier than 210, although I think she overdid it a little. How did she do it? Not through ridicule, and not through an eating disorder. She joined the LA Weightloss program, and followed their diet suggestions to a T.

She did NOT use their pills, though!

She tells me that the diet she followed was nothing unusual and not hard to follow. SHe could eat pretty well whatever she wanted, including fast food as long as she ordered it as recommended. SHe changed her cooking methods slightly (ie no frying in butter), watched her portion sizes, ate at least the minimum requirements of fruits and veggies every day, and most importantly (according to her) AVOIDED ALL PROCESSED FOODS.

TO her mind, that's the key - avoid all processed foods, and you sidestep a lot of problems. But all the stress she was facing in her personal affairs last year probably 'helped' a lot too, I hate to say!

CH I'm as concerned about morbid obesity as the next person.

What does infuriate me however is the continual presentation of body images (particularly to women) that are "biologically inappropiate" and result in a frighteningly high percentage being disgusted by their (perfectly "normal") body shape and an increasing range of eating "disorders"

There is some evidence to show that the diet "industry" (which makes money on the back of so much misery and engendered self-disgust) is also responsible, to some extent for actual increases in weight as repeated (yo-yo) dieting drives the "natural weight range" higher for some people!

Unlike some of the posters here, I would never accuse you of sexism CH (You can be equally rude to anybody! :) ) but nevertheless, from the very title of this thread, it would appear that fat is still a "feminist issue"

Emma, I strongly disagree that fat is a "feminist" issue.

Certainly the fashion industry is guilty of showing unattainable (and often unhealthy) "standards" of female beauty. But who edits and publishes these magazines? Who writes articles for them? Who buys them? Almost invariably, it's women, right down the line. "Women beware women" was never more apt.

And this gives the lie to it being a "feminist" issue. If it was a feminist issue, the problem would by definition be that men were discriminating against women who weren't stick-thin, or that men were advocating this body image. The fact that men aren't doing this and it's *women* doing the advocating means that it's impossible for it to be a feminist issue, for the same reason that it's impossible to be racist to someone of the same racial group as you. Sure, it's specific to women, but it doesn't make it feminist.

Re that Times article, it commits a basic error in logic - it assumes that "overeating" and "underexercising" are fixed values. That's obviously complete rubbish. Lumberjacks, soldiers, professional athletes and other groups who do hard physical exercise every day *require* something like 5000 calories per day to do this work. "Overeating" for them would be 6000 calories; "undereating" would be 4000 calories. Compare and contrast to a couch potato who never leaves their air-conditioned/heated house, for whom 1000 calories per day may be overeating.

When you add in the various other factors, all they do is modify where your baseline for "overeating" and "underexercising" kicks in. In other words, if you're in a heated house and you're eating the same calories as someone in an unheated house, you might need to run 2 miles extra per week than them, perhaps. If you don't then you're overeating (or underexercising), even though you're eating the same as them.

To misunderstand that is like saying "You drove due east from your house in central Ohio perfectly safely. I drove due east from central Manhattan, bounced off a zillion buildings and then fell in the river. What am I doing wrong...?" Sadly, there's a lot of apologists for fatness who make exactly this mistake. The fact that the Times would phrase their article this way is disappointing.

Grab, it is by far mostly men who own the fashion magazine publishing houses, but you are right that it is women who buy the magazines. So, who is influencing whom? According to advertising research that I posted somewhere in a message (don't have time to find it now) the idealized super thin youthful face and body is promoted to drive sales of not only fashion, but of anti aging products, cosmetics, diet products, plastic surgery, etc. Many women and men both buy into that super thin ideal - enough to make it a hugely influential industry. Print it and they will buy....

Alice, it's certainly mostly men who own the companies, but it's women who run the women's magazines. I don't have any evidence for the assumption, but I doubt the owners have much say in what goes in them, so long as they make a profit.

You're right about men starting to buy into the plastic surgery thing, as well. More false assumptions - women believe men want stick-thin waifs, and men believe women want bodybuilders. All rubbish, but you'd never know from the magazines.

Grab, I don't know what you base your assumption on that it is mostly women who run the magazines. It is mostly men who control the content of the magazines. Women's Wear Daily, the bible of fashion industry, publishes the job changes "Executive Moves". The most powerful positions are mostly held by men.

Last three generations of my parents families ( before mine, from circa 1900 - 2000) Included 11 thin men, 3 fat men, 10 fat women, 4 thin women. Men died ages 43 to 67 (heart disease, diabetes, cancer). Women died ages 51 to 96 (cancer, stroke, old age). All the men are deceased. Three women, two fat, one thin, are still living (in their own homes), ages 80 to 86.

Anecdote does not equal data.

But I don't believe 20 to 30 extra pounds is as much of a risk as we are told. Reefer Madness with a plate of pasta, my honeys.

It is entirely possible to be healthy AND well rounded.

Since I had my dicky ticker fixed (and that was a genetic problem, nothing to do with body size - I lost 3 stones [42lbs] and was still fainting every time I stood up), I've been relatively healthy... I'm just lazy so I don't run for buses or use the stairs - but neither do I sit and guzzle cakes, buns and fizzy drinks every day. My diet is low in fat, high in fibre, veggies, water and vitamins. I limit my chocolate and alcohol intake, I try to walk whenever sensible and I have various excercise tools which I use (and not just as a clothes horse)... I'm the same weight now as I was before I had Limpit, but no one could ever accuse me of ever being thin!

Larger than magazine pictures does not automatically equal unhealthy.

Back in the 70s, NYC ordered new buses from Japan. They had the lowest bid. Unfortunately, they built the buses based on Japanese butts - many riders took up two seats and were not comfortable.
