Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: Donuel Date: 26 Apr 08 - 07:36 AM I've heard of Alpenglow. In the summer the glow can be a yellow green and tints the water a neon shade of strange torquoise as though the water is illuminated from beneath. Yeah that last picture of the Stratus cloud in Novemeber came with a wave of 50 mph wind that said "I am the final dividing line between summer and winter!" |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: Alice Date: 25 Apr 08 - 05:27 PM It's called Alpenglow. Very common here in the mountains. Western sunset, the mountains on the east glow with the colored light. Any clouds in the eastern sky glow, too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: bankley Date: 25 Apr 08 - 03:39 PM I heard that the sun doesn't rise or set at all.... and that the earth is not really flat.... damn evolutionists it's probably the afterglow from the recent global "4-20" smokathon |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: MMario Date: 25 Apr 08 - 03:13 PM but sometimes you do get a "sunset" display in the eastern sky - and nothing in the west. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 25 Apr 08 - 03:12 PM What am I missing? Perhaps I am not understanding the joke because the sun always rises in the east and sets in the west no matter where you are, right? |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: GUEST Date: 25 Apr 08 - 03:05 PM Those first photos look like the sun shining on a cumulonimbus thunderhead-type cloud. Here in North Texas, such clouds are known to produce hail and tornados provide certain conditions prevail. The last photo is a stratus cloud. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: Ebbie Date: 25 Apr 08 - 02:51 PM Here in Juneau Alaska, the sun sets most of the year (it varies by degree) on the'north' snd of the Gastineau Channel (not manmade, so not really a channel). Very often the sunset throws its colors down channel to the 'south' end (in reality, our channel does not run true north and south) where it tints all the mountain tops and sneaks onto the water of the channel through the passes between. I have seen not only the mountaintops but the ocean colored mauve and pink and orange and yellow. One wouldn't guess that the sunset itself is diametrically opposed. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: topical tom Date: 25 Apr 08 - 02:25 PM I think that those are really eastern lights as opposed to northern lights.Seriously though, great pictures all! |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: MMario Date: 25 Apr 08 - 01:50 PM Eastern Sunsets can be quite spectacular. Also the occasional 360 degree sunset. I'm not sure just what causes them, but my grandmother's window faced due east across a salt marsh - and she would qwuite frequently get eastern sunset displays - they were at their most spectacular when combined with a high tide and not only would she get the sky colour in the east, but it's reflection in the water. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Apr 08 - 01:46 PM You can see the sun rise in the West any day - all you have to do is fly due West at the right time and place. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: Donuel Date: 25 Apr 08 - 06:05 AM Its easy to be in the right place when all I did was go in the backyard. Thats why I was so attuned with the East & West directions. Alice you do have the biggest sky. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: GUEST,Mr Red Date: 25 Apr 08 - 02:32 AM This looks for all the world the same night I drove home with the sun visible below a block of cloud. It was brilliant yellow-orange and if it lit high cloud from afar that would be the colour. It was about 7pm UK BST and lasted 15 minutes or more. There must have been an atmospheric effect to produce that colour. It wasn't red but the lower sky (wispy cloud) was filled with the same colour glow. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: Alice Date: 24 Apr 08 - 11:57 PM We have sunsets that look like that, glow on the eastern huge clouds that fill the sky, but also add a large mountain range glowing (alpenglow). In July and August, there is often a full rainbow or double rainbow with it, in front of the glowing clouds and mountains. http://www.montanalightphotography.com/landscapes.php Alice Bozeman, Montana |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: heric Date: 24 Apr 08 - 11:06 PM The sun only sets to the West when you're in the East Amos. Fabulous Donuel, thanks. I once saw a true spectacle while landing in Omaha, surrounded by enormous, but well spaced cumulonimbus at sunset. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: Amos Date: 24 Apr 08 - 10:30 PM Yes. But...doesn't the sun usually rise in the East? And set in the West? Did you cross directions, or was it really the eastern sky being lit up like that? A |

Subject: BS: Rare sunset in the east From: Donuel Date: 24 Apr 08 - 12:00 PM A few weeks ago we had a wonderful sunset in the eastern sky while the western sky had no evidence of a sunset at all. The clouds were large and low and must have been at a fortuitous angle to create this effect. These web shots have less depth, deep color and contrast than the actual photos but it shows what a sunset in the east looks like. first here is what the western sky looked like the whole time. http://usera.imagecave.com/donuel/don/sunsetwest.jpg While looking due east for the next 5 minutes... http://usera.imagecave.com/donuel/don/sunseteast1.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/donuel/don/sunseteast2.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/donuel/don/sunseteast3.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/donuel/don/sunseteast4.jpg |
