Subject: RE: BS: Labor Day... What a sick joke... From: Bobert Date: 04 Sep 12 - 09:33 AM On that we agree, Krinkz... Here in North Carolina we have a major problem... Small employers just ignore the workman's comp laws... Heck, they ignore the IRS laws and pay people cash and call them "independent contractors"... No taxes... No FICA... No workman's comp... No nothing and guess what??? They get away with it... You get messed up on the jobs site and it's tough, better luck next time... Oh sure, you can file suit against the employer who either hides behind some LLC or doesn't have a pot to piss in so if you win then he just BK's on you and you lose again... The "Charlotte Observer" writes about it about 2 or 3 times a year, year after year but it never changes... Good on the Dems for requiring the DNC Convention contractors to not only be legal but to use union labor... And, of course the usual people will do their blah, blah, blah union bashing but it ain't costing the DNC anymore to use union and legal companies than it cost the RNC to put on their convention... Subject: RE: BS: Labor Day... What a sick joke... From: Henry Krinkle Date: 04 Sep 12 - 06:40 AM It's true. You risk life and limb every day you go to work. And if you do get hurt, the compensation is a joke. (:-( 0)= |

Subject: RE: BS: Labor Day... What a sick joke... From: ChanteyLass Date: 03 Sep 12 - 08:53 PM There was at least one Labor Day parade in RI. It was in East Providence. Also, there was this "— In Rhode Island's capital, about 200 union members, students and Occupy Providence members marched from Brown University to the city's financial district, arguing that educational and financial institutions must help fix the economy and rebuild the middle class." Admission today was free at the Museum of Work and Culture in Woonsocket, RI. Next weekend I'll be at Sunday's Labor and Ethnic Heritage Festival at the Slater Mill Historic Site from noon to 5. I've started a thread on Mudcat about that. I have recently attended three school committee meetings in North Kingstown, RI, opposing the privatization of the custodian's jobs. It's another blow to labor, and I'm depressed about it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Labor Day... What a sick joke... From: kendall Date: 03 Sep 12 - 04:09 PM Only one in ten workers now belong to a union, and the time is at hand when the rest of you better wake up. |

Subject: RE: BS: Labor Day... What a sick joke... From: Ebbie Date: 03 Sep 12 - 12:08 PM I agree with you both; I remember the vibrancy of unions in the 50s. Not everyone was in the union but everyone talked about them. On the other hand, when Rap says: "Perhaps it's time again for Unions and Veterans to quietly demonstrate their muscle, perhaps again with parades." maybe that is the clue as to what has gone wrong. The people IN the movement need to become not only visible but need to demonstrate their pride in it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Labor Day... What a sick joke... From: Rapparee Date: 03 Sep 12 - 11:59 AM Where are the Labor Day parades, like I walked along side my father in when I was four years old? Like Veterans' Day and Memorial Day, it's just another day for sales. Perhaps it's time again for Unions and Veterans to quietly demonstrate their muscle, perhaps again with parades. I wonder if the people out fishing or barbecuing today realize that if it wasn't for the Labor Movement they'd be working? |

Subject: BS: Labor Day... What a sick joke... From: GUEST Date: 03 Sep 12 - 09:29 AM There was a time when American labor was appreciated but that day has come and gone... With Ronald Reagan using the full force of the federal government in busting the Air Traffic Controllers Union in the early 80's it has not only been open season on unions and labor but with government support... The minimum wage is now lower (after idexing for inflation) than at any time in our history... Boss Hog is not only living fat but he has his perfect world with people scrambling to take jobs any wage just to not be on the street... Go to any Starbucks and ask the kids there how many of them have college degrees... Lots... And making minimum wage of close to it... 1/2 of Americans are living at 125% of poverty or less... Is labor appreciated??? Go back to the 1908 election where the three major candidates all supported labor and labor unions... My, wouldn't it be something if we had that today??? But we don't... We have a government so afraid of the robber barons that they don't even want to utter the word union for fear of reprisal... If you go to the Washington Post on line there is hardly any mention of "labor" other than in the generic "Labor Day" as part of other stories... No mention of actual "labor"... No mentions of "unions"... No mention of the corrupt state of state is in... Well, I'll just end this this way: I appreciate each and every man or woman's labor... I have done a lot of it in my life... It ain't easy... It gets people hurt, crippled or dead... So on this "Labor Day" I would hope that people who read this will reflect a little more on the sacrifices our parents and their parents made and people are making as I write this... And, yes, they are sacrifices... Sadly, they are sacrifices that are being forced upon them... June Teenth??? Fun while it lasted... B~ |
