Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Oct 00 - 01:21 AM Thanks. I needed that. Sugar Dog all wore out from reboot reboot reboot every time she make a message, an' other stuff too. She perk up ear, hears where-at did that Indian go. Whistle up WonderGoose, and off she fly on that good strong back. She sail long and wide, she sail high that WonderGoose. Look down she spy a window dimly lit, third floor of a building... uh huh say Sugar Dog, this Goose have her a real good eye. WonderGoose she slide down low and arc off the side draft slippin' past the building... Sugar Dog laffin' in delight, she slip offa that gooseback, and fluffy ears float her down easy on the air right into the parking lot. Sure, she sez, Ah knows where that Indian boun' to go! And there it sit! She trit-trot, trit-trot over by the open door, head for the elevator, and take herseff up where was that window. An' yas, she fin' a door stand open, room lit soft with computer glow. Lil giggle escape from out her neck an' she dive across room, giggledoggin' the man is in there. He know she comin', he always see Sugar Dog just before she arrive. Cuz he a Sugar Dog Man, a 'specially clearsighted one too. Gotta be such, give her that name an' all. Sugar Dog and Sugar Dog Man set a spell, see if maybe any banjo lady show up. Maybe do a lil howlin', have a laff. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: Amos Date: 21 Oct 00 - 12:38 PM In the dark cool autumn night outside the mudcat Cavern Tavern, a soft wind helps the early falling of red leaves from maples, tan from oak, find their way to the ground. The wind pauses, as though startled for a moment, but the leaves, now begunin their descent, make their way toward destiny in graceful, lilting swoops through the night's soft dark. Pale shadows and ripples of moonlight cascade across the receding hills into the sugared forests of the mountains behind the Tavern. The yellow light of the Tavern windows falls outward and splashes a brief distance across the parking lot before surrenderign to a soft, cool autumnal darkness, laced with moonbeams. The chatter inside the tavern, the flames from the jello-pit, the clink of virtual glasses, are a bundle of cheery sounds. Heat rises into the mnight in waves from the busy kitchen and bar. You can see it wqavering into the night air from outside like waves from hot asphalt in summer. But the night is cool and absorbs them. In a sudden gust of wind, the chatter of the Tavern in its many dimensiuons seems for a moment to suspend, all voices reaching a pause point simultaneously in the strange synchronicity of large groups in small places. And in the pause an ancient sound comes back through the night, ewafts in through the windows, down the chimbleys, across the tavern floor, through the ponderous forms suspended in the jello pit. It is a deepthroated rumble, a watery sound like a large boat in still summer waters, a low-pitched bass bubbling out the rhtyhms ofunlimited and unused power. The sound grows from a faint whisper over the country hills, and approaches veering andf snaking along the linesof the small two-lane blacktop road that runs in front of the Tavern, bound from Anywhere to All Points. As the rumble, soft and liquid, grows louder, those who have spent ime here before look at each other in recognition. It is the sweet liquid basso profundo of a 1939 Indian, drawing closer and closer. As it pummels the doors and windows of the Tavern a green glow seems to stream back in through the windowpanes, overriding thre Tavern's firelight and candleglow with an eerie celestial vibration of green light. It dances momentarily across the walls and floors of the busy Tavern, a verdant sparkle laced with golden flecks, a hum of its own, and it stretches and fades as the sweet deep murmur of the giant Indian motorcylce rolls by and away into the autumn evening, bound for destinations unannounced but tinged surely with its own precise rhythm of divinity... |

Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: JenEllen Date: 20 Oct 00 - 09:31 PM Party night....hmmm...the perfect party night.... A traveler coming up the road would only know of it's exhistance by the soft glow of light coming from the trees surrounding the tavern. They might catch smells dancing on the breeze, alternating whiffs of SusanAR's delightful cooking and greenish clouds of partially digested vegemite... Intrigued, they further up the path. Feet crunching on gravel in time to the music they now hear. A curly headed woman is on the porch, wearing nothing but white socks, a banjo, and a smile. Her fingers travel lightly, hardly a neophyte, her music delights all on the wooden boards, and incites her listeners to the dance. The dog door of the tavern swings constantly. Dogs, cats, possum, (and a moose?) use the trees as their playground, then return to the tavern for warm laps to curl up in. The traveler would peek in the windows to see the curiosities held within. Along the wall, the worn bar offers a variety of delights. In the center of the bar rests a small lighted shrine rejoicing in the credit card that is Bert's.... The traveler enters, tripping over a pile of warm fuzzies that was left close to the door. A warm Hespearian voice tells him to "Take two, they're small" and he does...and with one fuzzy under each arm he promises a game of euchre before the night is over. The volume on the big screen television is turned off. A small group watches a baseball game. Music as a metaphor for life, this game is a metaphor for the tavern, since most of these people are on their firsts, seconds, and thirds by the looks of it. Inbetween plays, the patriarchal Rick is quizzing the lot of them and grinning like a Sugar Dog. The traveler slides on offal from the jello pit, and accidentally walks into the Brassieriatorium before finding his own cozy spot to watch the proceedings. One small corner of the tavern holds a group of renegades, debating the creative genius of an ex-Monkee. A Mousetheif plays "Some of Shelley's Blues" on the jukebox. The European contingent is holding a certain Bron hostage, snogging wildly, and regaling the others with pictures and tales of Llanstock past, and plans for Llanstocks future. In an area piled with pillows, fluffy sofas, and reading lights a red-headed woman is consoling a love-lorn young man. The woman gives the young man a hug before curling up on a sofa with the Moose and the Professor to dream up a fabulous tale. The Sugar Dog curls up on her lap for a while before chasing the possum out the door. The tavern tonight holds all of this and more.....

Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: wysiwyg Date: 20 Oct 00 - 04:33 PM Packing to leave one's job can have unanticipated blessings. Mine was, I just found the three kids' books that had gone missing after one staffer's little girl got too old to come to work with mommie anymore. (O mommie, I'm too big to go THERE! I go to Big Girl school!) I spent many hours reading to her, a little at a time, as she grew up among us. I thought the books were long gone. Two, irreplaceable I think, had been well-used when I bought them for my own son, when very, very small, and he turns 21 next week. I'm going to send them to him for Christmas, after they have visited a certain friend of mine in CA. (Yes, you, BG.) Well! One has the BEST poem, I could almost recall it... knew it would make a great song! So I'm giving it its own thread-- go look for the Sugar Plum Tree, which MUST grow just outside the Mudcat Tavern. (Sorry, the names in the poem, although changed to protect the innocent, have been spoken for already. WhaHoo! More critters I get to write!) I'll clicky to it later if I can. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: MMario Date: 18 Oct 00 - 12:53 PM Dang little hawk, your virtuality synchonizer must be out of whack! One of the first underlying principals of the Tavern is that due to it's nature the vices of one occupant do not interfere with the pleasures of another occupant. Of course ye olde mudcat tavern does tend to metamorph on a frequent schedule. I'm still trying to find the camara I put down during the tequila jello wrestling match, and the sneaks I took off during the riverboat cruise... |
Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Oct 00 - 12:23 PM Little Hawk ties his horse at the front of the Tavern, and peers suspiciously through the almost opaque and slightly greasy windows. These white people have the weirdest ways of socializing imaginable, he thinks. Time to shape-shift. A slight rippling effect in the aura, and Little Hawk is transformed into folksinger George Coventry, complete with harmonica pouch containing 8 keys of harmonica, and guitar in hand. He enters the Tavern. The air is way too smoky, but he's seen worse. Cigarette fiends are slumped at the tables, their eyes glassily fixed upon giant TV screens where overly paid athletes cavort before thousands of Homer Simpson clones. Would this be an opportune time to transform back into Little Hawk and put an arrow through the screen? Well, perhaps not... It's fun playing the George Coventry, famous folksinger part, walking casually in like Dylan at the Nickelodeon...but not as dangerous...because George is not really famous, except at Don's Coffeehouse and a couple of other local spots like that. It's an enjoyable fantasy with "little risk involved". (Pick the right song title for that quote and you could win an as yet unspecified prize...). Ah, here are some of the Mudcatters...a bizarre but generally likeable bunch of people with their fingers directly on the pulse of what is and is not a "folksong". Just ask 'em. Everyone is still winding down from the Sargeant Kat and her Howling Commandos episode. Matt is playing the guitar, and singing in a surprisingly good voice...plenty of depth and timber...but the damned jukebox is drowing him out. Spaw farts sonorously in its general direction, and the jukebox utters an inchoate shriek and dies. Good. Now we can listen to Matt properly. Looks like this visit was worthwhile after all... |

Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Oct 00 - 09:26 PM Zeb, if you want some real craziness, just input the word 'Tavern' in the filter box and set the refresh to 2 years. Start with the oldest and watch as the thing becomes completely crazed. The subjecy matter is different and the cast changes, but these past few by comparison are pretty mild. There were some really whacked out tavern threads!!! Some, as Mario said, have gone the "Group Writing" route like one that a real excited young fella'that we used to have around here started called the "Mudcat Juke Joint" Run a search on that one...it pretty good and a lot of fun. And Matt_R.....Glad to see you around here at the Mudcat. You might like that Juke Joint thing too. Ya never know do you? Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: MMario Date: 16 Oct 00 - 09:09 PM Another reason is that the Taverns are to some extent a "guilt-free" BS zone, where thread creep is welcomed, okay, tolerated, alright, put up with... We call these threads "taverns" but they have been virtual campfires, lounges, cooperative fiction writing sessions, bereavment sharing, and a whole host more of things. You may not have been around long enough - (a scan of your posts shows only three days) but for many of the 'catters this is NOT virtual. Many of us are quite simply "ourselves" - though expressing ourselves in written form. I may not be able to stop and chat in a local pub with some of my friends - they are too far away. But I CAN stop by a tavern thread, and "unwind" with them. No everyone understands that. Matt_R - welcome! welcome! WELCOME! Give that sugah-dawg a big hug for me.

Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: CarolC Date: 16 Oct 00 - 08:46 PM Sorry, thread creep! Zebedee, it looks like you are new here. If so, welcome to the Mudcat. I find that I have a much better experience here in the Mudcat if I just stay out of the threads that don't appeal to me, and I post to the ones that do. Some of the threads that I post to probably don't make much sense to many of the people who read them. Other threads don't make much sense to me. One of the beautiful things about the Mudcat is the rich diversity of the individuals here, and the amazing mix of creative input, as well as useful information and sometimes outright silliness that can be found here. It's a wonderful place. Best wishes, Carol |

Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: Zebedee Date: 16 Oct 00 - 06:55 PM I'm sorry Praise, and it's probably something lacking on my part - but I really don't understand these threads. Can someone please explain how telling virtual friends that you'll buy them a virtual drink or whatever can possibly be a good way to spend your time. I try to live by the ideal that you shouldn't 'criticise what you can't understand' so I won't be critical. I do however find the idea of these threads completely baffling. If someone can explain their attraction, I'd be grateful. Thank you Zeb |

Subject: RE: BS: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: wysiwyg Date: 16 Oct 00 - 06:49 PM CLICK HERE TO REVISIT THE LAST SUCH TAVERN |
Subject: MUDCAT TAVERN THREE, JUST THE From: wysiwyg Date: 16 Oct 00 - 06:36 PM This is the tavern that is just a tavern, no spacetime irregularities or manipulations, no special effects other than those caused by nature, no mystery plots. We are opening tonight in honor of DAVID LEVER, and someone will probably make a clicky here so that later Tavern visitors in the next millenium can see how he was treated for all his good behavior. Dave (tam), my knickers are still up the flagpole, and I fly them this time for you. Long may they wave! Over there in the back there's a game of hearts going on, and beyond that is Ernie Dowell's wake, till Thursday AM EST. The recliner section looks kinda empty but it's early yet. Now that the Olympics are over, we have the bigscreen TV going over in that area, but it's OK. It's just archived Mudcat Radio and Video shows, and Max can't see us but we can see him. Remotes at each recliner too, and afghans. The pajammie closet is stocked with every size and style of comfies you can imagine. A brazzer storage vault with locking bins has been added to prevent some of the unfortunate hijacking of lingerie that occurred last time. So ladies, get comfy in confidence, it will still be there when you dress to go about your business. Something REALLY NASTY seems to be going on over by the Jello Pit. The odor coming from that area suggests that the Jello Dive this time includes optional time-release Marmite and Vegemite administration. Of course it has to be taken ahead of time but there are little jars along the bar. Someone is over there standing by with a little blowtorch to light the emissions as divers pass by. The lingering memories many here have of Miss Caitrin are tending bar. Lot of Caitrin's back there it seems. Maybe Herself will stop in with a plate of cookies. I am happy to see that work on the doggie door has been completed, where lurkers, newbies, and Sugar Dogs can come and go freely. Look out for cats whizzing around your legs through themain door. Sneaks. Lurkers, please do stop at the Loo to leave a little graffitti, and will someone please tell me how to spell graffitti? A Whiskey Cat is curled up on the top shelf of the bar surveying all. Sugar Dog she come in and say "woof!" That mean, where mah BEER???? She take a big bowl an' she hop up in a recliner, maybe some good lap come along. Oh, and there be a link to the last such tavern right quick. Sugar Dog hop down go fetch. Whoosh!
