Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Little Neophyte Date: 07 Nov 00 - 07:04 AM I must admit watching Guy eat was interesting. I think he should donate himself to a case control nutrition study. I didn't say a word about it because I was so fascinated in his food choices. Personally I think Guy would benefit from hiring a full-time nutritionist/trainer to coach him all day long. Bonnie

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Guy Wolff Date: 06 Nov 00 - 10:07 PM Hi gang, I have to add here how much I got from our trip.. Though I love new banjos(The ramsey 12"ers will make a great touring banjo))I must say how strong and personal a voice one gets from great old instroments.. There was a Farbanks at Amherst that just stood up and sang all on it's own..At Lexington was a Vega White lady ( Bonnie is that right) that was clear as a bell.. Also at Mandolin bros was another great early Vega( $6000.00 great)but incredable.. As far as playing goes I had such a great time playing with Bonnie.. I am working up again "East Viginia"(G sus 4: sawmil tuning), "Ruben's Train"(in D sus 4) "Wildwood FLower" ( in G tuning but with the 5th dropped to F and played in F)& House Carpenter (in G sus 4 :sawmill tuning) Plus Bonnie showed me how to do a blue clicky thing.. Sometime I may even try it. She was so great at not telling me how poorly my eating habits were..So I eat 14 eegs a week and extra whipped cream on the Hot chocolate...Anyway I have to thank her here for comming all that way and giving me the excuse to play all thoughs great banjos.. ( and some wonderful guitars to boot) We did have a blast and most do it some more!!!!! My best to all here |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: InOBU Date: 06 Nov 00 - 09:57 PM Ah well, I will just have to get up to Toronto, the sessiuns in New York are pretty cut throat anyway... Cheers, Larry |
|
Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Little Neophyte Date: 06 Nov 00 - 07:01 PM Kendall I appreciate your offer, but I saw so many banjos I am feeling instrumentally overdosed. Larry, we would have loved to drop in for a session but the road trip to Mandolin Brothers took up most of our day and we had to get back home in time to make supper for the kids and Erica. Bonnie

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Little Neophyte Date: 05 Nov 00 - 01:50 PM I'm home. I am still blown away by Guy's generous nature. He took me everywhere looking for a banjo and he was so patient with me too. Although I came home empty handed, Guy was able to help me discern what I really wanted. It was the process that was so much fun. Driving around the state laughing our heads off at life. Taking a few moments of serious decision making and then adventuring down the road to explore what the next store had to offer. His knowledge on banjos was a guiding light. He helped me understand the subtle differences between what each banjo had to offer. He was very intuitive of my needs and offered advice wisely. One of the greatest moments on this trip was having the opportunity to share music with Guy. I will never forget working with him on East Virginia. His wife Erica, and kids Elizabeth and Christian made me feel so welcome. Guys home has a warmth that radiates so much love. It is a refection of the beautiful person he truly is. I will never forget this trip. I feel so grateful to the Mudcat for making magical moments like this really happen. Bonnie

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Nov 00 - 09:32 PM Well, that's a bit unfair to the rest of us Bonnie, but Guy is indeed, one helluva' guy. His posts here have always been straight from the heart and whp and what a person is shows through in their writings. I'm glad you are both having such a GREAT time!!! I can't think of anyone who deserves it more! Spaw |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Guy Wolff Date: 04 Nov 00 - 09:10 PM This is a monumental moment. I listen closely to Lilly May Ledford do her thing and started picking up some of her haunting version of East Virginia. Its opened up a whole new world for me. I'm now feeing more comfortable in saw mill tuning and playing House Carpenter with more feeling. We pretended Guy was the fiddler and I backed his version of Soldier's Joy. You know something, my visit with Guy has been truly magical. He is one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. Not only is he incredibly gifted with an enless stream of talent, he is a beautiful person with a warm loving nature and a heart of gold. I think I'll stay here in Connecticut and have his family hire me on as the resident cook. Bonnie

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Jon Freeman Date: 04 Nov 00 - 06:31 PM That's what I meant by "shuddering at the thoughts", Guy. My tenor is based on the Mastertone Flathead design and it weighs a ton (mine has resonator and flange to add to the weight). I play sitting down but there have been times I have wondered about people who play intruments of this type standing up (maybe you're one of them) - they must have stronger backs than me! Jon |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Guy Wolff Date: 04 Nov 00 - 06:02 PM Hi Gang.. I just wanted to add here that anyone in the Toronto area that has the chance to take lessons fron Rick Feilding should realey think about it.: (Guitar or Banjo)..He has given Bonnie a great foundation and the tools to realy take off.. We have been having some very esoteric(SP?) banjo talks and the playing has been a blast.. I know most of that is Bonnie's will and spirit but Rick has realy given her room and the tools to fly.. Some day I realy have to sit down and play with the man..All the best to all who have jumped in on this thread.. PS Jon that mastertone is alot of mass ( Even without the flang and resonator) I dont know if even my head could be thick enough!!!! See you, Guy |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Jon Freeman Date: 04 Nov 00 - 12:34 PM Bonnie, I envy you going through places like Mandolin Bros - maybe one day... Anyway, I hope you do come away with something nice - please let us know. Of course you could always bang Guy on the head with his Mastertone... Jon (shuddering at the thoughts of being hit on the head with one of those) |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Guy Wolff Date: 04 Nov 00 - 10:58 AM You know, I really think I found the right banjo..... in Guys living room that is. I fell in love with his ball bearing Mastertone. So this is the plan......... When I get the call from Mandolin Brothers that they have a ball bearing Mastertone on hold for me. I'll take a flight (first class of course) back to Newark New Jersey and hop into a limo to Staiton Island and pick up my new banjo. Does anybody have some suggestions on where I can take the boys out for lunch to thank them? Something in the 5 star range. My real problem is finding the right designer to cut a case pattern so I can send it off to Gucci in Milan. Guy and I were not sure if I should line the case with sable or mink. Since Oscar De La Renta and Bill Blass happen to live in Guy's town, we thought we'd get together tonight and think tank these important issue. Willie-O I never realized how expensive getting a good instrument would be Bonnie & Guy |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: katlaughing Date: 04 Nov 00 - 02:00 AM Bonnie and Guy, this is so much fun reading along about your forays and you get to throw a pot, Bonnie!!! Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Willie-O Date: 03 Nov 00 - 10:41 PM And if you're not a JCP, you are....? Inquiring minds want to know. ..... When Fielding was here, a local non-musician friend of mine brought along a banjo to show and ask about, which was passed along from someone or other.... Damn if it wasn't a genuine open-back Fairbanks. Not a Whyte Ladie I guess, but still, what are the odds? I have an open-back banjo that wants to be played a lot more often than I ever will. (I made it, many years ago, so I'm sentimental about it, but more about it gettin gplayed I think.) You should try it out sometime Bonnie. Like WHEN YOU COME TO VISIT. There, now you have an excuse. Besides, I know where there's this Fairbanks... Of course, if you hang around Mandolin Brothers much longer, you'll probably not have any money to spend on stringy things for, oh, the next twenty-five years or so. But when you find the right one, you'll know in a moment. W-O

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Guy Wolff Date: 03 Nov 00 - 11:04 AM Just because I am going to buy myself a shmata for my head and add the Wolff banjo logo on the peg head, does not mean I am projecting at all. It is pretty interesting, the Bart Reiter is a class act, it truly is. But I just couldn't do it. To own an instrument like that, made me feel too much like a Jewish Canadian Princess. Bonnie |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: SINSULL Date: 03 Nov 00 - 10:57 AM mAKE gUY HELP YOU PICK OUT SHOES WHEN YOU'RE DONE WITH THE BANJOS. It's the least he can do. Damn Capslock |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Guy Wolff Date: 03 Nov 00 - 10:53 AM Ok .Ok, THe ideas are flying . I think Bonnie likes My banjo..This is not projection guys I promise (I've taken a 1925 ball bearing mastertone ,taken off the resonator and Flange, Put on a fiber head and a taller half moon bridge with wider string set up: Thank you to Tony at Fretted Instroments , Amherst). So of course I didn't asks anyone if they had one when we were out and about.. But Mandolin bros DO have a 1926 coming back (We hope ) from a try out..I asked every heavey weight store owner:Stan, James & Tony if they thought I was nuts to transform a early Mastertone this way and I must say they were all very polite.( Of cource two of them are killer frailers). |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Whistle Stop Date: 03 Nov 00 - 09:08 AM You hit some of my favorite shops, too. The folks at the Music Emporium are great -- I've bought a number of fine instruments from them, and my fair share of accessories too (also had some first-class repair/maintenance work done by them). Glad to hear you're enjoying yourselves. |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: dwditty Date: 03 Nov 00 - 06:23 AM Well, you certainly hit the best spots around. I spent hours, maybe days, in the Fretted Inst. Workshop when I lived in Amherst (Now New Haven). Spent plenty of time in Cambridge, too. I recently bought an exquisite 12 string at Mandolin Brothers a few weeks ago. Hey, are you guys following me? Good luck, Bonnie, finding your new friend. dw |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: DonMeixner Date: 02 Nov 00 - 11:46 PM FUTURE NEWS FLASH!! In a fit of ironic humor, Bonnie buys the first one she tried. A Harmony Sovereigne with the backalite pot and resonator, Black Diamonds strings and clear Remo head. Bonnie will be quoted it have said. " If its good enough for Mel Bay, its fine for me." Don |

Honestly, I couldn't think of a better time than to be in the Northeast in the Fall traveling from banjo store to banjo store with Bonnie and Guy!!! Now, I 'spect we should get to hear some great duo's that emerge from this little adventure and take a gander at some fabulous pics! Can I follow behind y'all and pick up the banjos that you leave behind? I'll take any old wooden tone ring Flesher, or maybe a Ramsey, or Reiter. JAB. Waa Waa Waaa. |

Subject: RE: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Guy Wolff Date: 02 Nov 00 - 08:35 PM Hi Guys Well my flight was 1 1/2 late and poor guy had to wait in the parking lot playing 3 banjos to keep himself entertained. I heard he gathered some crowd even Jay Unger's banjo players exwife stopped by to listen to him. Guy was easy to spot, he was the one with the red bandana jumping up and down smiling from ear to ear waving banjos at me. He makes great company on the road trip, we listen to The Skillet Lickers, Clarence Ashley & Doc Watson, Lilly May Ledford and of course Dave Macon. The best part were the instore concerts he held while I was trying different banjos in the back. People got signed CDs, a chance to pick up tips from the Great Master 'a legend in his own mind' (direct quote from his wife Erica) Well I didn't find a banjo yet but I am having an amazing time in the World of Guy Tomorrow he is going to teach me how to work with clay. We are going to start off with a simple flower pot. To be continuted Bonnie

Subject: Little Neo & Guy Go Shopping From: Guy Wolff Date: 02 Nov 00 - 08:24 PM Hello everyone! I have a house guest!! We have just spent two days of incredable banjo lusting..I picked Bonnie up at the Hartford airport and we went up to the Fretted Workshop in Amherst to look at Tony's collection of old and new banjos.. Ramsey's and Reiter's were struned all over the place.. My faverite was an old Fairbanks (Cole?) that just popped..There was a Ramsey student 12 " model worth seriuos thought as well.. It was interesting looking at the difference between an old instromant with such a particular "Voice " and some very good modern"Solid" banjos. From there we forgot about lunch ( I had a chicken grinder worth forgeting Bonnie had water) and ran up to Lexington to look at The Music Emporium and all their incredable treasures.. I think I got cross-eyed from so many good instroments( And low blood sugar).. Today we ran down to Mandolin Bros. .. Stan was so nice to us.. After trying $20 or$30 thousand dollars worth of instroments and not buying anything he still gave us each a T shirt: what a g |
