How can you say that rappers or people the read poetry out with a peice of rhythm music behind them singers, they don't sing they talk and it's boring, because one poem(song) sounds like every other poem(Song).

I remeber years ago my nephew put on a rapper's record and I sat and listened to it, and I thought after a while that's a long poem, so I got up walked over to the record player and found out that the neddle had nearly finished the first side.

Rap 'music' is shit but those to their own.

Besides, if the major towns of Canada weren't clustered close to the border, USers (pun intended) wouldn't be able to slip across for their own shopping. Here in Juneau many Alaskans regularly head for Whitehorse and Atlin for our own nefarious purposes- music, cabins, X-country skiing...

Mollywoggie, mollificent harks of munificent, magnificent, beneficent and all that good stuff. Can't hurt.

Alex... we live along the border because, firstly, it's warmer, what with all the hot air that blows our way from the south, and, second, because we are covertly massing up for the invasion, which usually takes place beginning in late fall of every year.... when the hot air turns to winter air and the grass is definitely greener on the other side of the fence.

Oh, and that cross border shopping doesn't hurt, either.

Someone clicky a number two, eh ? This Canuck is too lazy to look it up after thirteen straight hours of report writing.

Im not allergic or anything but its kind of sad that those who are cant take that chance anymore. Petr

Last year a boy I had a mild crush on nicknamed me "Mollywog." It stuck. The crush has long since worn off, but the nickname remains. :D Along with mollificent, of course *grin*

I just wish me mam would stop calling me "Molyester." Puhleeeze, mum, couldn't you find a *natural* fiber to nick me with?

Sigh.

By the way, while I'm here...this thread ROCKS. :)

I just realized that nobody's mentioned Hershey-ets, those eminem wannabes that have FIVE letters instead of just one. As a graduate of the Hershey Medical Center, Penn State's medical school located in Chocolate Town, USA, I'm disappointed. (For my birthday when I was a first year student, one of my friends drove all the way to Harrisburg to get me a Nestle's Crunch bar. For some reason you couldn't find them in Hershey...)

I'm just a junior lighting/sound designer, I'm afraid...still learning. Also, most of the stuff I've worked with is theatre, not mobile setups. So I can't help a -whole- lot with your question. What I -can- say is to go with something very versatile and get a flexible lighting tech. If you're going to be taking stuff on the road, you're not going to be able to create the same look everywhere; you've got to have crew and equipment that can adapt to a lot of different places. Lighting trees are good to have--they'll allow you to hang in places where you can't hang overhead. As for what instruments to use, a lot depends on what you can afford. I'm personally fond of Source 4 pars and leekos. ETC's Intellibeams are really nifty, but mondo expensive and probably more technology than you need. *grins* Actually, they're more technology than anybody but, say, Mick Jagger needs. But they're neat.

Alex, good thought, but how would you determine how hard is hard enough? I would assume this would be subjective, but would like the opinions of others.

Random surveys of a statistically significant population could yeild a mean, but would it truely be meaningful?

How hard must it be to be optimal?

You know if we take the shell-coating thing in the direction that Homeless is suggesting, within a very few generations we will come to the point where eminems are 100% coating and 0% chocolate. Which will sort of defeat the purpose of their being the chocolate that melts in your mouth and not in your hand. And they'll probably break your teeth, as well.

I think that, instead of going for overall hardness, the breeding program should go for a specificed amount of hardness, and any more or less hardness would be bred out. This should be based on a scientifically derived determination of the optimum coating-to-chocolate ratio. Just enough coating to keep it from melting, or from breaking just when you pick it up, yet not so much coating that the chocolate flavor (such as it is, of course) is overwhelmed. Eventually, as the result of our new and improved breeding programme, the entire herd would be of roughly the same hardness.

Hmmmm Kim...I never seen any GooGoo bars here in NC...

But you know what's cool? Eating Nerds, you know...those hard-as-hell candies that are shaped like fruit? If you eat one, and then take a swig of Mountain Dew, you get this AWESOME taste in your mouth. Kind of a synergism of flavors. Try it!

Now, here in the South, one of the favorite candies is a GooGoo bar. I don't think there's any relation to the GooGoo Dolls, whom I happen to like.

Seems to me that most candies used to come in larger packages/portions. I had a GooGoo the other day and it just seemed So Much Smaller than they used to be. Same with donuts.

I took an IQ test and my score was something like 117 which isn't genius but is supposed to be above average. If I eat more Smarties can I get into Mensa?

Fantastic research from Burke and Homeless!

Sinsull asked about the cannibalism. I hadn't seen that commercial yet, but it does seem quite disturbing. How do they go about it? Is it one big cartoon-style gulp or are individual bites involved? Do they chew?

I'm less concerned over Spaw's sexual issue. My view is they are cartoon representations and the artists have taken some liberties. I mean, Donald Duck never wears pants; I can't recall if the M&M guys/gals/its do, but Don's a guy for crying out loud. Does Daisey wear pants or does she have a little skirt thing going? And Micky only has pants.

Now don't go opening that keg of fish...

Why are Boysenberries not Boysen colored? Strawberries straw colored? Oranges called oranges, but lemons not called yellows?

And I don't know if I've yet figured out the cow connection. Maybe it has to do with the whelks.

Heck, if I can't make it serious (yet not on the original topic), I might as well be silly.

Wow... and now I can try to totally hijack it in another direction, thanks to Caitrin!

Caitrin! You do lighting design?

VERY cool!

We've had some questions about lighting around here, and I do have a somewhat serious question that I don't think really merits it's own thread...

What would you (Heck, or any 'catter) recommend for a personal lighting setup? I'm talking a group of around 5-7, mostly static on stage, and hopefully portable within a minivan. Requirements would probably have to include stands to set up on...

I'm not actually looking to buy, I'm just curious for future reference, and here looked like as good a place as any...

However, I kinda dig a little wrong. Thanks for the laffs folks. You guys have made my day. Cow-orkers and co-techs...
I did think that I would be able to slide one M&M joke into this thread, but alas, all the ones I had thought of were used...

Sounds like a definitional question to me, Caitrin. Kind of like, If a husband says something in the forest with no one around, is he still wrong? Well, not exactly like that...besides, I'm not going to be a husband much longer, so I can be right as much as I want.

Actually, when you get down to it, the colors we see are just reflections of light. In fact, things are every color except the one they look like. For instance, the eminems you think are red are actually reflecting red light and absorbing every other wavelength. *grins* And that's been your lighting designer moment for the day.

Red blueberries are yellow when they're green. (At least that's true in the Olympic mountains, home of the Olympic marmot, which is better than the vegemot.)

How come nobody mentioned that all eminems are really WHITE?? Just suck on 'em for a while and you'll see. (There, that oughta shake up the MTV contingent....)
Or the best thing to do with them, which is to toss one up in the air and open your mouth wide. This is guaranteed to make your dentist, or Dr. Heimlich, very happy.

Sinsull asked:

Aren't any of you disturbed by the fact that the TV M&Ms have taken to eating each other? I can't decide whether it's cannibalism or incest.

Well Sins, I think its all a matter of what parts are being eaten and by whom. This brings up the point also being pursued here, and that is, how do you tell the sex of an M&M? Surely the M and the M do not mean that they are all male or we would have run out many years ago. I think this may explain the problem encountered by Frank and I above. Some of them are W&W (women/female) and others are M&M (man/male). This probably holds true for all the colors except tan which, being 3-D farts, are sexless.

MMario - You do understand why green dresses like a hooker, don't you? Heck, even school kids know what green eminems do to ya.

if blueberries aren't blue, and blackberries aren't black, what color aren't raspberries?

Does anyone remember the mint eminems they put out (quite) a few years ago called Royals? Those had all of todays variations beat, hands down.

Never seen rules for eating eminems (other than save the green ones for your girlfriend), but I have seen a contest...

----- ----- ----- ----- -----

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels.

Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round.

I have found that, in general, a couple colors appear to be tougher, but until I am able to confirm my initial results, I cannot disclose which colors these are. My results are quite consistent with respect to the new blue M&Ms which appear to be genetically inferior, and I hypothesize that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theatre of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world.

Occasionally I will get a mutation--a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment.

When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ, 17840-1503 USA, along with a 3"x5" card reading, "Please use this M&M for breeding purposes."

This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free half-pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this "grant money." I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion. There can be only one.

-----

Just a personal note--in my opinion, the assumptions underlying this experiment have not been thought out adequately. Is it ethically--or edibly--desirable to breed into this experimental model the single "hard coat" trait? What about selecting for higher chocolate content? Or less runnyness of exterior dyes when the candies are placed on top of ice cream sundaes?

two items the professor said were always brought up to refute that statement - one was blueberries - which I have explained above - the other item would be scallops - because of their pretty blue eyes. But the actual reason there is no blue food is that virtualy all the (non-mineral) "blue" seen in nature is NOT due to pigment - but rather refraction, reflection, scattering, etc and the substances are actually of another color.

Do a search on Google for "What makes blueberries blue" -- it's a PIGMENT, anthocyanin. A blue pigment. Also makes some flowers blue.

I thought it was some substance on the skin like dust. Blue dust. Like grape "must", only on blueberries. I know some colours are optical illusions. Some bird feathers, if you put them in a blender, end up being a different colour, because it's a refraction illusion. I dind't think blueberry dust was that way. I admit I could be wrong.

Alex

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Eminem Rules
From: MMario

Nope - it's an optical illusion. touch it and it goes away. *grin* actually it is called "bloom" and isn't even skin deep. it is a very thin layer on top of the skin of the fruit. but under that, nope, the stuff isn't blue. Some plums have a blue bloom as well - but same thing - it actually wipes off; and if the fruit is handled much at all before cunsumption, let alone cooked, it won't be blue. According to the nutrition courses I took there is no naturally occuring blue food.

Leastwise that's what they taught me at that place I'm still paying for 25 years later.

In the UK M&M's used to be called 'Treats' - peanut or chocolate variety. They said the change was to standardise the names across the Atlantic. I reckon they changed them when they heard the joke about a man who used to put sweets up his bum. When asked why he said it felt a treat.

The less said about that the better I guess....

So? Other products with changed names. Marathons became Snickers. Oil of Ulay became Oil of Olay. Any 'other direction' changes? We need to know these things!

Cheers

Guest - I think you can take our opinion of eminem from our comments. Personally I have far more respect for the candy - even green, despite the fact she dresses like a hooker.

The ones in a tube were best - bit like a prepubescent sinking a "yard of ale" - with the added frisson of seriously choking to death.

Charlie says, "Love my Good 'n' Plenty!"
Charlie says, "Really rings a bell!"
Charlie says, "Love my Good 'n' Plenty!
"Don't know any other candy that I love so well."

There. Musical content. Happy now?

Moeron ? I used to say "**** 'em if they can't take a joke". I now would like to expand that to read, "**** 'em'n'em if they can't take a joke".

When you eat your smarties, do you eat the red ones last ?

you can get them in boxes too, though.

The ones we used to use for Kazoos were the boxes from Good 'n Plenty.

Well, I guess they were Eminem's but they definitely would melt in your hand. They're little candy covered chocolates. Not only could yoy play that Kazoo, but you could play along to the jingle....

When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the red ones last ?

Do you suck them very slowly, or crunch them very fast ?

etc.......

You must be talking of a different sort of Smarties than I remember, gnu. The ones we get around here are colored sugar tablets that come in a roll bound up in cellophane. What are yours like?

I prefer Smarties. But then, I'm a Canuck. Haven't had any in over thirty years, but I remember that the empty box could be used like a Kazoo (sp ?).
