Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: Pseudolus Date: 25 Feb 02 - 04:22 PM Did anyone hear Gretzky after the game talking about the coin in the ice? Apparently the folks responsible for putting in the ice were Canadian and there was a Canadian coin embedded in the ice for luck. It was in there the whole time. They dug out the coin after the game to send it to the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame. Pretty neat story but it seems to me the luck was not necessary considering how well the Canadians played. Of course, just for giggles, I wouldn't mind borrowing the coin and taking a trip to Las Vegas!! Frank |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Feb 02 - 04:09 PM I don't watch hockey any more, but I am always willing to watch Don Cherry! The guy is a born entertainer. I love those "tough guy" talks he gives, I love his tacky Mactac salesman suits with the high collars, and I love his dog. He makes John Wayne sound like a wuss. Don Cherry may be the most impressive strategic weapon Canada still has, since Sergeant Renfrew of the Royal Mounted retired "Cuddles" and put his old horse out to pasture. Sounds like I missed a really fine old-fashioned hockey game this time, though... This is what I get for totally ignoring the Olympics, eh? :-) - LH |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: gnu Date: 25 Feb 02 - 08:22 AM Steve's right. My mother, 75 years young, does not care for any sport except figure skating and absolutely abhors contact sports of any type. But she followed the men's hockey like a trooper. She even likes Don Cherry !!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: Steve Latimer Date: 25 Feb 02 - 08:05 AM Ard, Thank you for the advice. We're just pretty darned excited. I'll take some flack over this, but the majority of Canadians will tune into the Olympics, cheer for the various events, but hockey. Hockey is Our game, and frankly, we haven't had the greatest success on the world stage in many years. I went to bed almost 5 hours after the game ended, and there were still horns honking and people cheering in Downtown Whitby. With all due respect to the other athletes, this sort of behaviour doesn't happen when we win a gold in another event. |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: gnu Date: 25 Feb 02 - 07:12 AM Oops. Some of you may not know who Don is. That's Don Cherry, a colourful commentator, past coach of the Boston Bruins, loved and/or hated by all Canadians. |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: gnu Date: 25 Feb 02 - 07:07 AM This thread started after I posted this to the Cdn Women's Hockey thread... What a game !!! Don said it best when he posed the question, "Why, if NHL hockey is so poor compared to European hockey, did the gold and silver medals go to Canada and the US ?" Bravo to both teams. I wouldn't want to be one of those Europeans who were crapping on us when the NHL gets going again. Gonna be a bit of payback coming, I'd say. I'll add this, too. After the game, in my brother's neighbourhood, there was game after game of pickup on the streets - kids at every turn. I wish I had a sporting goods store. |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: Rick Fielding Date: 24 Feb 02 - 10:24 PM Brophy is still COACHING!? 'Fraid you nailed another point Steve. You're right. even the slightest rink enlargement would cost them big. Did i read it right this morning about what some fans were willing to pay to see today's game? Noticed something interesting as well. I switched back and forth from CBC to NBC (or was it CBS) and the American's dodged several bullets, goal-wise. They ran commercials at every face-off and ALWAYS came back ten seconds late. Geez, it's nice to see a game played THAT QUICKLY as well. All in all, one of the best games I've seen. Guess the Russians are totally pissed, when even Canada gets more medals than them...Does 'em good. Rick |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: Steve Latimer Date: 24 Feb 02 - 09:59 PM Rick, I agree with you about the Centre line, but what would be even better for NHL Hockey would be to use Olympic size ice surfaces. That give more room for the skilled players to manouver past the goons, it would open up the game for better passing plays, it would add more speed to the game. Of course, the red line might go away. The ice surfaces will never be enlarged as it would mean removing 3 or 4 rows of seats @ about $200 each per game. It's going to be tough to watch an NHL game in the near future, isn't it? |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: Rick Fielding Date: 24 Feb 02 - 09:51 PM Sick as a dog today....but not too sick to go YEAHHHHH! Puhleeze grant me one wish oh hockey Gods.....let them get RID of that RED line in the NHL (won't happen I know) and we can have exciting hockey ALL the time! They won't get rid of it 'cause it would eliminate the role of "Goons" and tough guys...and probably result in far fewer fights. Right now almost every team has a "third line" comprised of hard asses, with little speed. With the freewheeling Olympic style these guys would be left in the dust (or shavings). I think North American fans would quickly grow to like it. Rick |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: DougR Date: 24 Feb 02 - 09:34 PM I thought it was a great game, and though it probably will be considered unpatriotic, I was rooting for Canada all the way. About time they took home the gold for hockey. Congrats you Canadian "Cats." DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: wysiwyg Date: 24 Feb 02 - 08:13 PM Great game, caught the second half or so. We were rooting for the Canadians-- out of gratitude for the whole damn sport, and so many fun times enjoying it. Felt they deserved it. Would have liked to see a tie tho so we could squeeze another period of thrills out of it! So classy the way they stopped trying too hard to score after getting an overwhelming lead. Good guys, the whole bunch, both teams-- played full out. ~Susan |

Subject: Canadian Men's Hockey, Gold!!!!! From: Steve Latimer Date: 24 Feb 02 - 07:26 PM What a hockey Game!!! Both teams played textbook hockey, it was fast, clean, the officiating was good and Canada came out on top. I don't think non-Canadians can have any sense of what hockey means in this country. The game has been over for over an hour and a half, they are still celebrting in the streets. This is the First Gold that we have won in men's hockey in 50 years. My father has retired to Ireland, he called me and he's still shaking. Don't let the final score fool you, this was a much closer game than it would indicate. What a treat to see the finest players in North America assembled on the larger Olympic ice surface. Cudos to both teams, the Americans played a wonderful game too. Now I remember why I love this game. |
