Absolutely WLD, couldn't agree more - my Bro-In-Law's a copper (thankfully escaped to be a Canadian copper nowadays), so I'm very much on their side.

Seems to me that the guilty few need dealing with much more severely than they currently are - and I can't see the logic of the 'Ban Football' Brigade whose solution would punish the innocent majority along with the scumbags.

There's a lot going on inside the game to combat hooliganism, thuggery, racism and the like - and unless you go to matches, you might not be aware of it - but every time some stupid editor gives the thugs the oxygen they desire by printing screaming headlines about their evil-doings, it's another set-back for those who are working to get the game its good name back.

WLD - I'm not denying that there's an element who misbehave in the way you describe. I'm simply saying it's a small minority. I've regularly attended games with crowds in excess of 35,000 over the past few years, I've only ever seen a handful of arrests and I've never felt in danger (unlike a game at Molyneux in the 70's where I felt fortunate to escape with my life).

I'll say it again - the vast majority of people attending football matches in the UK today are decent, law abiding people. A minority are thugs and, as is always the case with the media, it's the rotten apples you hear about, not the good ones. A headline such as 'Law-abiding Fan Attends Game With His Wife, Buys A Replica Shirt In The Club Shop, Enjoys The Game, Applauds Good Play By Both Sides, Goes Home And Enjoys A Chinese Takeaway' wouldn't sell many papers would it? Yet that, or something closely akin to it, is precisely what the majority do. It's a sad but inescapable fact that the media have hoodwinked the public into believing that ALL football fans are hooligans, and it patently ain't true. Some are, most aren't.

BTW, the taxpayer doesn't pay for the police - they present the clubs with a substantial bill for their attendance.

Well I watched the Villa win yesterday and didn't see any trouble (except for the missus).

Its absolutely great with Sky sports now. A couple of hours after the match you can watch your own team for 50 minutes (highlights) :-)

Well there goes my weekends. I live not too far from the other Claret and Blues - West Ham United (in dire trouble thanks to an overspend on the new ground and some really crappy playing the last two years).

It is a sad fact that there are some people who use the match as an excuse to drink, fight, swear, puke and piddle in the street. Worse is the amount of traffic (although this has been reduced in the last year, due to their relegation to a lower league). Of course, the same happens on Indian and Pakistan independence days (August 14th and 15th.... I'm not driving anywhere this weekend!), and other auspicious occasions such as the opening of an envelope.

Most of the crowds I see are well behaved, but only those I see within an hour of the match - they tend to be the families who come together, have a happy day out and then go home immediately after. It's the single, uncommitted people (male AND female) who cause the trouble. WHU played Chelsea in a grudge match a few years ago, on a Monday evening with a 7.30pm kick off, ending at 9.30pm. The sirens started less than 10 minutes after the final whistle and went on until 3.00am. And that is not uncommon.

As far as I'm concerned, Elizabeth I had the right idea!

After yesterdays' fiercely contested local derby between Middlesbrough and Newcastle, which ended in a 2-2 draw, both sets of fans were let out of the ground to go home and I'm happy to report that the black and white shirts mingled with the red shirts without a problem.
Not so long ago it would have unthinkable to let the visiting fans within half a mile of the home fans!

One time a few years ago, I was doing a bit of supply teaching in Derby and i had to take some kind of civics class where a woman police officer came round to talk to the kids. ( for our American friends the Rams Derby's football team has apparently about the same status as the New Orleans football team - hapless was a good word!)

after the class I was chatting to the officer and her colleague and they were telling me that after a match their coats were covered in spit. they had to have another coat ready from the dry cleaners after every saturday.

and when you go round and you see the away fans being escorted en masse from the train station with police horses and stuff and they're half pissed and singing - its a far from edifying sight, and you think why the hell should the tax payer be paying to protect these assholes from themselves.

Near where I live is the railway station of Alfreton. Every Saturday they stop football trains there to take people off the train who are tired and emotional.

I think you're a fan of Derek Brimstone. check out his son Eddy's book about his life as a soccer hooligan. In fact Eddy's on the telly every time they want someone to talk about skinheads and hooligans.

I'm not saying ban the bloody game, but it needs to get its act sorted out and turned into decent family entertainment rather than a sort of weekly truculent bastards reunion party.

Whether one likes football (soccer, Association football, call it what you will) as a sport is a matter of personal preference, and I understand perfectly well that it doesn't grab everyone - fine, no problem, whatever floats yer boat.

But what drives me nuts is the assertion commonly made by non-football-lovers that all football supporters are violent drunken thugs who use every game as an excuse to brawl, smash up the stadium and pee/vomit copiously in every street within a five-mile radius of the game. It's simply untrue, I've never behaved in that way and I don't personally know anyone who has. I regularly attend Premiership games (and sadly, since the demise of Leeds United, Championship games) and I've seldom seen any trouble either in the ground or outside it. Not saying it never happens, just far less frequently than many would have you believe. The louts are in a small minority and that most supporters are decent, law-abiding people who go to a game simply to support their side and enjoy a sporting spectacle. Brucie please take note.

Football? What's football compared with rugby and cricket? No better games in my opinion, speaking as a true non-football supporter. If I'm asked, I support the local side of wherever I live, but I prefer rugby and cricket. And, incidentally, rugby IS football! It's proper name is rugby football. It's soccer football that's the proper term for the thing that we hate that is called football.

I must admit I thought the gas-mask ruse was a good one. I rather like that sort of terrace humour. No malice, just teasing each other.
For the benefit of those who haven't a clue what we're talking about,
Middlesbrough, being famous for its' heavy industry and, in particular, the large chemical industries clearly visible as you near the town, has a reputation for having a polluted atmosphere to the extent that those of us residing in the region have come to be known as "smoggies" to our near neighbours.
When visiting Newcastle fans planned to arrive wearing gas masks the authorities stepped in and spoilt their fun.
I'll keep an eye out for the patches tomorrow! (sorry)

Apparently the players are not going to shake hands before kick-off as a precaution against the spread of conjunctivitis which has been rife in the Newcastle camp recently. Seemingly it will be OK to knock seven shades out of each other on the park though!?

Football is a game in which people kick a ball with their foot (or feet). Sometimes they kick it with their heads, in which case the game is renamed at the commercial break and becomes headball. Adults who play take great pleasure in putting the ball--a leathery thing mad from cut up and sewn together five and six sided pieces of animal hide--into a net which is jealously guarded by a man who stands there and watches the adulds run all over the field kicking the ball. Then the fans (people who go to watch) beat the shit out of each other. Many recover from their beatings and hangovers either in jail or hospital or both. The game has rules. American pro football, just like soccer/Football in the UK, has already begun its "preseason," much earlier in the year now than in the past, when it was strictly an autumn phenomenon.

In the good old days, football began with the school year, early in September, and ended on or about Thanksgiving (end of November). The college game still sticks pretty much to that schedule, plus the "bowl games" -- formerly a half-dozen specially-scheduled contests during Christmas-New Year's week, now a much larger number of games througout December until the Monday night after New Year's.

The NFL (professional league) has extended the season at both ends, starting in August and continuing steadily well into January.

Sometime within the next month or so, I will inevitably get caught up in the general civic ednthusiasm over the lovable but usually hapless New Orleans Saints. However, at this absurdly early date, my annual practice is to resist the temptation to start investing my emotions in the team that was for many years our fair city's ONLY representative in any American "big league" sport. (We recently acquired a slightly-better-than-avereage NBA basketball team, the Hornets, which helps things a bit.) There'll be time enough for citywide heartbreak later in the year.

Not me. There are sports I prefer to watch, eg. cricket and RU but I still enjoy the game and support Norwich City. I think the only times I have got pissed off with football are:

1. When it has interfered with a much greater enjoyment of mine, ie playing music in sessions.

2. Constant reporting of things like every move in David Beckham's live.

3. What I have sometimes felt as bias towards the monied clubs like MU. And for that matter, the money in the game now and that in the English league, there are not many clubs I would feel stand a chance at the top. I'd guess that is even worse in Scotland - Rangers and Celtic but who else?

Still I agree with your feeling that the season seems to get longer.

We're only just into August unyet the football season is just about to start, when I were a lad it didn't start at least for another month,I thought it were a winter sport, seems like we've only had a few weeks break. Is something to do wi Global warming. What do you lot think?
