Bill D - we had an obscene phone call at three o'clock one morning - and they didn't suppress their number. So we reported them - Ma and Pa were away, and son had had a party, which got gatecrashed. It was the crashers wot done it!

But I don't think Ma and Pa were too happy when they were visited by the local uniforms investigating the complaint...

Well, I did this, too....

We'd been getting calls from Olin Mills, a photography company, offering to take pictures of my non-existent children. Finally, I'd had enough.

"Hi! This is Olin Mills. We have a special offer on pictures of your children...."
(sounds of sobbing from me)
"Sir..? Sir?"
"I...I'm sorry. It's just that my wife and I want children very much, but I was wounded by a castrater mine in Vietnam."
(a pause)
"I'm so sorry sir. I didn't mean to...I'm sorry. Goodbye, and good luck."

They didn't call again for three years.

My mother uses the same line on all telemarketers:

"Oh, sorry. I'm Vegetarian."

She said it the first time to someone selling mail-order meat so now she falls back on it every time. She claims it shuts most of them up for a second, then she says "Goodbye. Have a nice day" and hangs up.

True conversation, that happened when I was getting ready for work, running late, and had to completely change clothes before leaving. The phone rings.

"Hello?"
"Hi! This Mark from Smitty's Siding! Wouldn't you like to enjoy the benefits of vinyl or aluminum siding on your home? We have a special offer...."
"You're selling siding?"
"Yes! And we have a special offer...."
"I think that anyone who sells stuff over the telephone catches their t**ds, puts little sticks in them, and freezes them as t**dsicles. Do you do that?"

there's a LOT fewer obscene calls these days with caller ID available. A local college president got caught a few years ago, and it seems to have scared the possible perpetrators. Add to that the free availability of 'porn' on the WWW, and it just ain't worth the trouble for most of 'em.

I was talking to Shane, Brucie. He says that he would be happy to give you an obscene phone call anytime if you will accept the charges. One of his favourite hobbies is phoning numbers at random in Blind River and leaving such messages on answering machines. He says he does it at random because "I ain't prejudiced, eh?". He wants to sort of spread it around evenly, without showing favouritism to anyone in particular. He mistakenly left such a message on the phone of a girl he was trying to ask out recently, and she threw a milkshake at him the next time he showed up at Pizza Hut, and kicked him out. That's what you get for being fair and unbiased, eh? No respect.

I realize that it's a bit late to offer a *serious* response to this query, but here goes:

1) Wouldn't one have to accept the charges first, in order to learn whether the call is obscene or not? The only thing you can do is to accept charges *only* when you know the caller's identity.

2)We have occasionally received calls with the automated message "you have a collect call from a pay phone at Orleans Parish Prison," without any identification of the caller. These seem to come in bunches -- we'll get one or two per month for a while, than none at all for a year or so before they start up again.

Unfortunately, we got bunches of these calls while our kids were teenages living at home, often late at night when someone was still out running the streets, and it was entirely possible that a family member was indeed in jail (for underage drinking, smoking pot, being a passenger in a car with a drunk driver, etc.) Only after taking the call did we ascertain that the caller was a stranger calling a wrong number.

The worst thing was, we learned that these collect calls from the local jailhouse were billed at an outrageously high per-minute rate.

One more thing: If any one *does* have an obscene call collection, would you please post the best specimens?

My charges, however, were trumped up by the local authorities over that unfortunate nude rollerskating and pasta incident. It was all just a mixup. Your situation involving the 2 donkeys the yogurt and the blonde wig, however, were authenticated by authorities.

Every year at this house museum where I live, I have a different volunteer from somewhere in the country come help do tours for a period of weeks. This one year I came home and found the volunteer sawcer-eyed.

She said, 'Ebbie', you got a phone call'.

Seems she answered the phone and a man asked for me. She said, She's out at a music thing. Can I take a message?

He says, Um. Ok. Yeah.

She says, Just a minute- let me get a pen.

He says, OK.

She got the pen and said, OK. What's the message?

Brucie, if you are talking about the possible "business relationship" collect call I made from a payphone in Slovenia, where I offered an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the ENTIRE eastern Europe market of www.thonksky.com, and the way I described what the alpine breeze blowing over my nearly naked body as I was standing in the phone booth with nothing on but my thong, and of course a pair of black socks and wing tipped shoes, well, all I have to say is some people just can't see an opportunity if it hits them over the head. I do appreciate you sending the money to bail me out of the Ljubljana jail though, and the check's in the mail to pay you back. (you may need to hold it til Friday...something about my account being screwedup, you know how banks are)

the scam thing involved dialing 90# ...here is the info:
....someone "received a telephone call from an individual
identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician that was running a
test on our telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test the
QMOW should touch nine (9), zero (0), pound sign (#) and hang up.
Luckily, the QMOW was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the
telephone company we were informed that by pushing 90# you end up
giving the individual that called you access to your telephone line
and allows them to place a long distance telephone call, with the
charge appearing on your telephone call. We were further informed
that this scam has been originating from many of the local
jails/prisons. Please "pass the word"."

I've had a few phone messages on my answering machine that indicated that someone from the county jail was trying to make a collect call to my house. It was a recorded voice asking if I would accept the call from so-and-so at the county jail. Since I don't know anyone who has ever gone to jail it is unlikely they were really trying to call me. HOWEVER, there IS an urban legend about a scam out there, and one little bit of it is actually true: if I had a business line and were to authorize that call, then I think there is a way to make a whole bunch of calls on my nickle. They don't hang up after the call, they push the star or pound button then make another call and another and another. . .

This is what I've read, anway.

Considering there may be widely varying thresholds for people, what would you consider "obscene?" A call from Pat Robertson? From George Bush? From Heidi Fleis?

Actually, I can't remember if I ever made a crank call or not; I can remember when we had a phone with a crank to "ring"; each party on the line had a code, so many longs, so many shorts. But I'm not sure if I ever made a call myself before we got a dial phone.
