From first-hand experience - If you are alone and faced with unsolicited sexual attention, threats or worse, DO NOT allow yourself to become fearful or angry. If you succumb to either, your attacker will "feed" on it and the situation will escalate. But if you can manage to exude calm and confidence instead, while simply ignoring the threat if at all possible, it's more likely the offender will lose interest in you and move on.

Not sure if the same approach works for muggers, who obviously have a different objective in mind. And I'm grateful I've never had to find out!

There was a legend in Athens Ohio, when I was a student there. A young woman was hitchhiking to class. A man picked her up, and, instead of driving her to town, drove down a deserted room, and started pulling her clothes off.
Suddenly, she shouted, "Oh My God, I'm late for class!" grabbed her books and her clothes, and ran. The rapist, nonplussed, did not follow.

There was a fellow who attacked two women on their way to the gym. The first one screamed and attracted a group of people, so he ran.
The second one had a paddleball racket, so she did.

Always stop the car so you can see the wheels of the car in front. You will have left enough distance to drive away without having to reverse.

A car cigarette lighter is a very effective weapon, push it in if you feel threatened so it is good and hot if you need to use it.

In certain circumstances, I have carried two wallets, one of which contains a small amount of cash and some of those cr@p cards you get for membership of video clubs etc. No great loss to hand that over.

If you are going to carry a weapon, make sure you know how to use it, because a criminal is very likely to know how to relieve you of it and use it on you!

Another simple piece of advice to ladies. Keep your keys in your pockets. My mother used to get on my case all the time, because I did. Then somebody stole her purse. After that she quit pointing out that they spoiled the line of my clothing, and made holes in the pockets, and kept her keys in her pockets too.
Keep car and housekeys separate. That way the creep who takes your car can't come into your house.
A policeman adviced me that I should swear if threatenned. One night I met a creep, who grabbed the hem of my skirt on the 6th Street Bridge. I swore like a Marine Drill Sergeant. He walked off in disgust and raped somebody else that night.

Move a convicted rapist to the "sorting cells" most states use prior to assigning prisoners to a "permanent" location. Feed them meals and medicines heavy in estrogens. After the requisite time, move them to a regular prison....

And, regarding the title of this thread -- why only women?

If you think rape is sex, and castration makes rapists (I think you said "men", actually) safer to be around, you need to think again.

For the record, I'm not against castrating rapists as a punishment. (I'm quite medieval on that score). I just don't fool myself into thinking it's a solution (though it might serve as a deterrent -- which is far better IMO -- but I would bet on that either). If I had my way, they wouldn't be allowed back into society where they could hurt anyone else in any way. A bullet in the head might be a better alternative.

Except in Vermont, where it's perfectly legal. (And I think, in some of the western states, it's only illegal to carry concealed - if the weapon is out where people can see it, it's ok. But in VT, concealed is fine too.)

And we have the lowest per capita violent crime rate of any state except the two Dakotas, according to one report I saw a few years ago. (That may be out of date since the dealers have been working their way up I-91 from central MA.)

I actually found a Hilti hammerdrill with a full box of bits on the side of the road one morning. Ran an add in the lost & found for a few days and when nobody responded I sold it to a friend and bought my Strat with the money. It's probably also perfectly legal to carry a Strat almost anyplace you go. They make exceptionally nice bludgeons.

It's illegal to carry pepper spray in Canada. It's illegal to carry a handgun in the U.S. without a permit. However, it's probably perfectly legal to carry a nice 24 volt DeWalt hammerdrill with a 1/2" masonary bit pretty much anyplace. Never can tell when ya might need to drill into some concrete, ya know. Put that sucker up against some rapist's forehead, pull the trigger and he'll be wishing you had only used a gun.

Locking the car doors is good advice for another reason: you're less likely to be thrown out of the vehicle if you're in an accident.

Elderly lady in South Bend, Indiana was stopped at a light and a man came up to her open window. He ordered her out of the car, she put her cigarette out on his arm. He screamed and fled; she turned herself in to the police for injuring him. The cops didn't hold her....

Have you heard about the rape-resistant female condom? I am not making this up - it has barbs and will keep a would-be rapist busy while you run away. Wish I could remember where I read about it.

In these times of uncertainty and turmoil I am concerned about the
security and safety of my wife, all my lady friends (including 'catters) and my female relatives. The crisis that exists due to Katrina will most certainly give rise to crimes of every description. Especially CAR JACKINGS,
ARMED ROBBERY, PURSE SNATCHING AND PERSONAL ATTACKS against women. I am advising all lady 'catters…

•   To always be aware of your surroundings…check out WHO is in your immediate area and if necessary how to KEEP THEM AT A SAFE DISTANCE.
•   Be aware of who in the vicinity of ATM's if you have to use them. It is best to go to the bank and cash a check.
•   NEVER show large amounts of money anywhere!
•   Keep your car doors locked at all times.
•   Keep your handbags in the trunk of your vehicles or at least covered in the floorboard.
•   If someone approaches you while you are stopped (especially at a red light) lay on your horn and if necessary floorboard it and get out of harms way.
•   Try to shop without your handbag, keep a minimum amount of cash, debit and credit cards and your driver's license in your pocket or bra or even your shoes.
•   Shop with friends…safety in numbers.
•   If you are caught in the open and attacked by assailants…don't be a hero…if you have a handbag, throw it at them then scream and run.

I have been involved in the world of security many years of my life and know how folks are likely to act in times of uncertainty. Unfortunately, there is that element who are just looking for an excuse for violence and upheaval. We are starting to travel unknown roads that few of us are aware of. I am sure there are many more ways to protect your selves and be safe. All 'catters are duty bound to keep us all informed of problems in our part of the world…the planet is indeed getting smaller. Let us keep in touch with each other and reach out to all that we can.
