It's by Les Barker, and is available from the man himself via Mrs Ackroyd Records. I tried to find the lyrics elsewhere, but no luck.

Last year on the way to the Getaway to while away a long plane journey, I was thinking that Americans wouldnt understand the Geographical references in Les's text, so I put together a version using American place mnames that would convey the same sense. If anyone is interested I will post them

Martin, the sheer Joy of singing this , as the first 6 lines are the Original and it lulls people into a False sense of security, It is Great. For Jacqui here is the " Americanised" version (Poor lambs dont know about the Grand Union Canal and Stoke and Milton Keynes)

Exactly! It's a bit like singing one of the slow, minor-ish versions of The WIld Rover in Ireland - you're often about halfway through before people realise what it is!

As it happens, I occasionally sing a long version of Franklin so I should be well able to ambush the audience!

I'll be singing it at my gig tomorrow night for sure; my boss and family will be there (born and bred East-enders who moved up t'North to Sheffield from Milton Keynes - I'm sure they'll appreciate the last line of the song.

On the Mrs. Ackroyd album Yelp!, the song is about Lady Franklin's chagrin that her Lord has run off with Canadian folksinger Eileen McGann and the two of them are doing a tour of Canadian folk music festivals. (She ends up looking for James Keelaghan.)
