Wassail! I'm on the case. Elves are complaining like billy-o, but I've told 'em that all mince-pie rations will be cut unless productivity is increased. It takes a lot of work to knit a book, you know.

Gee, how do you do all that fancy 'guest' stuff? I'm still trying to figure out how to change my postmark without getting arrested.

I was sort of joking about the tome. Don't expect to receive that from my mudcat Santa, but thought putting it in writing might get the idea into the REAL Santa's head. It's the kind of thing you put 10 dollars a week aside for the rest of your life to buy. Unless it's a business expense. I just love grammar, Latin and Greek roots, etymology of all kinds. You know, where words come from, and how we use the language. I'm the kind of wierdo who enjoys teaching subject/verb agreement.

Really, gift-wise, I'm easy, and not easy. I was serious about the sand: I have many of them, from all over the world, in small glass jars. But not nearly enough! It's very cool to hold them, and then see them compared to all the others, and imagine all the places they've come from. Kids love to help me plot them all on the globe.

I love gospel in the Black tradition, "folk" of almost any kind, but especially good, hard a cappella music. My CD of the year last year was Ken and Allison, Nextradition. After this Getaway, it's the Johnson Girls' and Kendall Morse.

I hate clothes, but wear 'em anyway. I especially hate t-shirts.

I'm a gardener, and a cook, and am relentlessly, ruthlessly curious.

Now you know more about me than most of my friends and family.

Dani

Since my Secret Santa duties have ended, sniff sniff, and I don't have anything to do, sniff sniff, and I have all this free web space at ivillage.com, why don't some of y'all send me some pictures to put up? Also, PM me if you want a web page for your santee.

I could disguise myself and play Santa for lots of folks, but I really do hate being anonymous. It's like my brother-in-law said about lying (he planned a surprise birthday party for his wife), "It gets easier the more you do it!"

Note to Dani or to Dani's Santa:

That "tome" can be found here at a price that you may be surprised to note is well within reasonable limits. If, for some reason, this link should not prove to connect properly, do a search for the title at: http://www.alibris.com/home.cfm

Others may also wish to investigate this (often inexpensive) source for books.

Some inside information, JE's SS: JenEllen's kitchen is decorated, ready for Christmas, in subtle shades of red and green, so anything in that colour scheme (particularly tomato and avocado) is bound to go down well... or not... *grin*

Ah!! Marie Santoinette!! Let them eat Guacamole!! (And Titanic Daquiris!!)

Dear Santa:
She's right, you know. It not so much that I can't cook, it's just that each attempt turns into, at worst, some monumental clean-up, or at best, a lesson in vulgarity for the neighbors.
Things I have learned: ALWAYS pit avacados before trying to make guacamole in the blender. Otherwise, you and 20 of your closest elves will end up covered in green flecks and having an inpromtu funeral by the dumpster, re-living all the great times you've had mixing drinks with said blender, and humming 'Taps'. Also: ALWAYS check to see that your appliances are turned off before you plug them in, especially hand mixers, and especially when trying to make tomato soup. I still stand firm, dear Santa, that I wasn't so much trying to throw this mixer towards the pot as I was trying to throw it away from myself...but you get the idea....

purring just knowing you're out there,
~JE

OK FOlks I need some help. On October 27th, someone posted as "GUEST, Jeri's secret santa" and asked a question of Jeri. I just got a PM from Jeri's secret Santa and she said that she did not make that post! I need for anyone out there who thinks that they are shopping for Jeri to PM me as soon as possible. I looked at all of my original PM's and I only gave Jeri's name out once, I think. So if you think you have Jeri, PM me. I mean, it's ok if Jeri gets two gifts but that means someone will get nothing, and that would make me sad. You all don't want me to be sad do you?????? *BG*

Karen B, sorry. I thought the point of this was to have fun (still do) and enjoy anticipating. (Like the kid looking at/shaking/furtively trying to peel the tape off the boxes under the tree. Not that I did any of that stuff.) I'm afraid I got a bit playful. It was me, hoping for a post like "hey, wait a minute - you can't be Jeri's SS, because I am!" Didn't work.

I apologize to you and to my Secret Santa, who obviously doesn't feel comfortable posting.

Watson,

Upon reassessment of the clues, I have changed my mind.

My secret Santa is male and lives in OZ, hence the phrase, "no worries" ala Paul Hogan. He is of average height, greying at the temples, and slight paunchy from over indulgence in Foster's. Small scar on forehead from crushing beer cans. He plays the guitar but never, never sings "Waltzing Mathilda."

Well, Well, Santa, am I getting warmer?

Dani, or a hint for Dani's SS,

If you haven't already read it, there is a book you would probably really like. It is called History in English Words, by Owen Barfield, who was a member of the Inklings, with C.S. Lewis & Tolkien, etc.

It traces the origins of words and relates them to the culture & social aspects of the original language's society.

Ah, well, whatever makes ya happy (that's the whole point, isn't it?). I've had such teeny-tiny Christmases of late that I want to make my Secret Santa's gift part of the day's celebration, so I hope (s)he'll understand. Last year: no Christmas dinner at all, and no present-exchanging with the family till the following Sunday (around my father's retirement-home-room bed). Fortunately a friend brought over a pressie in the morning, and I had two song-share parties to attend, so that was nice.

Hey, Ho! CapriUni's Secret Santa. Tell the elves not to sweat it on my account, an unbound book in ascii and sent via email would just as fine as a knitted one (and, by cricket, I have enough trouble with my cats curling up on my paper-printed books! I can't imagine how diffecult it would be to read a knit one)!

And remember, to, that my birthday is January 12, and we have a tradition in my family of a week's grace period with that, and (frankly) I'm willing to extend my Holiday season into February, this year so tell your elves (and yourself) that time is not of the essence!

(Heck! 'Twould be wonderful to recieve the present in June, for that matter... I'm in this for the giving, not the recieving)

Hmmm, so I do have a secret Santa. I wonder. There was no snide comment on the condition of my current hat so it couldn't be Sinsull.

If you are from an area of the world that I am not then anything special from your neck of the woods would be fine.

I guess part of the fun is in the detective work. Let me review the clues:

"Brett old son" This would indicate to me an American, possibly with a southwestern or midwestern origin.

Then there is a comment on finding a pattern to make the hat in question. This is someone who is handy with cloth. That sems to point to a woman thought the use of "old son" might indicate a man. Hmmm. Gonna have to skull this one out.

Hi All

Sharon - Sounds a lot like my Christmases too. I don't really have a family and it's been 4 years now since I had even a passable relationship at holiday time. Usually I get invited over to a friend's family gathering and wind up feeling very dissappointed when I don't fit in as part of the family. I try to tell myself every year not to accept my friends generous offers, but I usually accept.

Oh well...

By the way, one of the homes around the corner from mine has decorated their yard for Christmas - they did so on Hallowe'en night while the kids were going trick-or-treating.

pax yall
