Subject: RE: Mary Makem From: Barry Finn Date: 10 Feb 01 - 03:11 PM Thanks for the posting, I've been pretty sick as of lately & might not of heard of these sad tidings until far down the road. I've sung with the boys a fair bit over the past few years by chance of mutual friends & have become pretty fond of them, they being so naturally warm, funny & friendly. If I can make it I'll pass on in person my condolences along with those from here, if I can't I'll ask John Nolon our mutual friend from here to do so, Thanks again. Barry |

Subject: RE: Mary Makem From: Jon Freeman Date: 14 Feb 01 - 09:17 AM Kendall, you were not alone in missing the other one - I missed it too. I would not be sending cards as I have never met or corressponded with any of them but the Clancey Brothers and Tommy Makem were the main reason I grew to enjoy folk music - I guess I would say Tommy Makem and family are important to me for that reason. Subject: RE: Mary Makem From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 14 Feb 01 - 11:22 AM Jon, I agree. I can't speak to someone I don't know personally at such a private time as this. It's interesting how so many people touch our lives in many ways that we don't even realize until later. And in retrospect we can see many different influences and meetings throughout our lives, many times not even realizing where the influence originated. Quoting Alice: The video, Mountain Born - The Jean Ritchie Story, is available at her website. It's a very interesting documentary, with footage of Tommy Makem talking about being a teenager when Jean Ritchie came to make recordings at his mother's house. |
