Subject: BS: Newcastle (no longer) Broon Ale From: GUEST,Mr Red (who never drinks it) Date: 23 Apr 04 - 08:22 AM I heard on the news that they are ceasing production of NBA in Newcastle and moving brewing to Gatehead. Could have been worse - It might have moved to Sunderland................ |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastl From: Bill D Date: 23 Apr 04 - 12:52 PM just as well...it has become a weird 'cult' item in certain places when imported here in the US, and they are charging exhorbitant prices for it. Perhaps the move will be for the better...(hey...maybe they could 'outsource' production to India! Dip bottles into the sacred Ganges, add some alcohol and color....) |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: Dave the Gnome Date: 24 Apr 04 - 04:52 PM I'm sure I posted a bit about Mann's here. Perhaps I have drunk too much of it! Not that that would make much difference at only 2.8% abv - Still a fine drop of beer though. Formaly made by Watneys and now brewed by Ushers of Trowbridge. Fine quaffing beer, long may it remain so! On the theme of the thread you may be interested to know, or not as the case may be, that the biggest local Eccles cake backery is now in Ardwick. Whatever next? Cheddar cheese not made in Cheddar...;-) Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: Raedwulf Date: 25 Apr 04 - 03:41 PM Not really. This is one of the things that pisses me off about those useless, worthless, faceless dickheads in Brussels when they start fussing along the lines of "You can't call it that unless you make it there". A recipe is a recipe, & it rarely makes much difference where it's made. Take all that fuss last year about Parma ham. If they were to make it in Parma using imported Danish pork, would it still be Parma ham? And, if so, why is it suddenly not Parma ham if it is made with (presumably Italian) pork processed in the same fashion in Denmark? Stupid! OTOH, alcohol is one of those things that is affected by where it's made, be it beer or wine. And one of my favourites is still Trent Mild, 2.7% out of a can from Tesco's. A very nice pint - drink beer for flavour not alcoholic strength! I find most super-strong (over 6%) beers sickly, frankly. Oh, & there's nothing wrong with a decent pint of Brown, Terry K! (Although Newkie, or Gatey, or whatever you want to call it, is no more than average). |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: Terry K Date: 26 Apr 04 - 04:14 AM Don't get me wrong RW, if they ran out of bitter and that's all there was, I'd soon be drinking brown ale. In fact, for a bitter drinker, Newcastle Amber (pale ale) was the better choice - not too bad actually. But the students didn't popularise it like they did the broon, probably not sweet enough for them. cheers, Terry |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: Gurney Date: 26 Apr 04 - 06:13 AM Much Cheddar is made in by Anchor in NZ. Stilton never was made in Stilton, in the days when it was made properly, but on Leicestershire farms. 'British' brand shoes are made in Fiji. I once heard that a Japanese industrial area had been named 'Birmingham' but that was in the days when British was best. |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: Dave the Gnome Date: 26 Apr 04 - 06:16 AM Here's another question. If you are in Bombay do you have to ask for Bombay mix? Or do you just ask for mix? I guess the latter, because if you go into a pub in Newcastle and as for a 'broon' we all know what you will get. (Aprt form a clip round the ear for taking the piss...) So, I guess MC needs to very carefull in cake shops in Derbyshire:-) Cheers DtG |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: MC Fat Date: 26 Apr 04 - 06:52 AM I'm always careful in cake shops in Derbyshire mainly due to an old scots mate of mine who after buying a bun asked the very lovely female assistant could he 'no have a poke' whereupon she slapped him on the face. A poke in Derbyshire/Northern England is a request for sexual gratification.... a poke in Scotland is a paper bag. |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: GUEST,sorefingers Date: 26 Apr 04 - 09:32 AM When I buy this beer in foreign places it tastes much the same as in blighty. I suppose it must travel well so moving it over to Gateshead can't make that much of a difference. |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: Dave Bryant Date: 26 Apr 04 - 10:12 AM Are there any breweries who still produce a proper Brown Ale these days. The Newcastle stuff, although very drinkable as bottled beers goes, was never what I would define as a brown ale, which was more of a bottled mild. At one time it was a standard product of every brewery, but now it seems to have completely disappeared. Rather as some Bitter drinkers would add a bit more sparkle to a pint by having a "Light and Bitter", many Mild drinkers would order a "Brown and Mild". Brown Ale was usually slightly sweet and was wonderful for adding to casseroles and as far as I was concerned, indispensible for creating the perfect Welsh Rarebit. |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: Beardy Date: 26 Apr 04 - 11:34 AM This is the second brewery Scottish Courage have closed in 3 months, following the Fountain brewery in Edinburgh. Although closing the Newcastle brewery they have bought Federation brewery a much smaller site and brewlength. What with their purchase of a 30% share in Caledonian in Edinburgh and selling Theakstons back to the Theakston family there are some strange moves going on in the ScotCo boardroom. Mann's Brown Ale is not brewed by Ushers as Ushers was closed in 2000. Its brewed under contract by Burtonwood for the Innspired pub group. Dave some micros are producing brown ales but usually named distinctinely rather than as brown ales and the image that is often associated with that name. Stewart |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: IvanB Date: 26 Apr 04 - 09:07 PM We had lunch with a friend today and, in the course of the conversation it came up that her father came from Sunderland. Then I opened this thread and found Sunderland mentioned in the first post. Inquiring minds want to know: What's wrong with Sunderland? Should we shun our friend even though her dad's been dead for years and we're thousands of miles away? Certainly wouldn't want to be caught associating with the wrong types, y'know. It'll hurt though - she's been my wife's best friend for years and is dearly loved by both of us. |

Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle From: Dave Bryant Date: 27 Apr 04 - 05:18 AM "and selling Theakstons back to the Theakston family" I thought they'd only sold the brewery itself back, but retained the Theakstons name. Obviously you never went into a cake shop in Bakewell and got away with either mistake! poke is the diminutive of pocket (I am told) hence the "Pig in a Poke" which was probably a cat anyway. So a paper bag (originally a cloth sack on would presume) looks like it all fits neatly - except when you let the "cat out of the bag" (same reference). |
