Subject: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 08 - 12:42 PM I was wondering if anyone else besides me is annoyed with all the ozzie osbourne commercials. I swear the guy must be on a dozen commercials lately. Every time I turn on the TV. I personally never understood the appeal. I always thought he was an Alice Cooper or Frank Zappa wannabe without the talent of Cooper or Zappa. However, that is only my opinion and it is obvious that many people love him for reasons that elude me. But Iron man ... give me a break, 4 chords ... yeeeesh |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 04 Dec 08 - 04:54 PM I love the spots too. His music is not my cup of tea, but there is nothing wrong with it. People enjoy him, he is enjoying himself. Life is fun. I'm not a fan of judging a person by comparing them to someone else. |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 08 - 08:50 PM sorry but I am entitled to my opinion as strong as it maybe. I do know many friends I have that completely disagree with me also. That is the great thing about music, it can be wonderful to someone and awful to another but I most certainly will not apologize for my comments at all. To me he was an Alice Cooper wannabe plain and simple but that is my feeling. |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 08 - 09:10 PM I will say his personality does appear gentle and doesn't hurt anyone so I guess go ahead, but still dislike the sea of commercials. Maybe it is me. I just see so much music that is created in the marketing board room and not in the studio. Lesser artist with great marketing skill and somehow everyone goes nuts. Don't get it. Yet in any club or most street corners there are amazing creative musicians that people ignore. But can't blame Ozzie for having a good sales and marketing team. I wish some of the blues folks on the street in New Orleans or some of the folk people had that marketing clout but I am going off thread so I will leave it |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Dec 08 - 10:54 PM You asked if people were annoyed. I bet HE is, because he only MADE the spot-- he doesn't book how many times it appears. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: alanabit Date: 05 Dec 08 - 12:45 AM Old Dude, I will make no claims for Ozzy Osbourne's intellect or musicality. However, calling him an Alice Cooper wannabe is ignoring the fact that his original band, Black Sabbath, was successful a couple of years before Alice Cooper broke through. Vince Furnier created a character and played him for all he was worth. Ozzy Osbourne by all accounts really is as daft as he comes over. Personally I think he is no more than an amiable nutter, but I can think of few people, whom he resembles less than Alice Cooper... Pope Benedict XVI perhaps... |
|
Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Darowyn Date: 05 Dec 08 - 03:27 AM I must support Alanabit. I've never met Ozzy, but I do know his original manager, the person who first signed him, one of Black Sabbath's drummers, and his original producer and recording engineers, and I have heard countless first hand stories about him. I can report that he really is just what he seems to be. He and his band paid their dues on the live circuit long before Alice Cooper was heard of. (and I won't hear a bad word about him either!) Alice Cooper followed a long tradition of theatrical horror performers, like Screaming Jay Hawkins, Bobby Boris Pickett, Screaming Lord Such etc. Ozzy was just the lead singer in an early heavy metal band. Most of the 'Prince of Darkness' stuff, biting the heads off bats, and the like was mostly accidental- and front men wearing eyeshadow was not unusual at the time. I think the way that Sharon has built Ozzy, and the Osbournes into a marketable brand is astounding. I wish I did know them! Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Musket Date: 05 Dec 08 - 03:42 AM Brought up on Black Sabbath, so rather nostalgic for his singing. As a teenager, I was in a rock band on the Saturday night and doing folk clubs on the Sunday. The links? Playing Paranoid on the Saturday and Fluff on the Sunday.... I remember when the reality TV of their family was on, my son said I should watch this. I said something along the lines of "Isn't that some American reality thing? Sorry, they even nick the name from an old Brummy I used to admire." "Err.. dad, just watch it." I sat there with a permanent grin. It was indeed that old Brummy. A burned out rather tired old Brummie who has problems keeping up with reality. Going to put on my Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album now and see what mood it puts me in... |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 Dec 08 - 03:44 AM I'm just amazed that Americans can penetrate that Brummie/black country speech pattern. He's not on drugs you know (well not all the time!). There are whole areas of England where people talk that. Someone said, that ozzy's home video programme was Bush's favourite tv programme. The brummie nasal whine and the Texan drawl must be on opposite ends of some scale or other. |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Acorn4 Date: 05 Dec 08 - 04:03 AM He is very funny especially when he tries to act as a role model for the kids. Can't wait for him to do a Child Ballad! |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 05 Dec 08 - 10:44 AM "I am entitled to my opinion as strong as it maybe." No one denied that you are entitled to an opinion. Please don't try to deny others who disagree strongly with the stance you take. I think it is wrong to judge a person by comparing him with others since each individual that you mentioned has a unique style and are not similar. You can live and judge however you choose. |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Becca72 Date: 05 Dec 08 - 10:50 AM I am a HUGE Alice Cooper fan and I just don't see the comparison, either. They are nothing alike. Ozzy is alright, though I'm not a fan of his music. I've only seen a couple commercials with him and I find the text messaging one that's out now to be a riot. I chuckle every time I see it. What scares me a little, though, is that I can pretty much make out what he's saying...but I do transcription for a living so I'm used to garbled talking. :-) |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: GUEST, Sminky Date: 05 Dec 08 - 11:31 AM biting the heads off bats and the like was mostly accidental I'll need more time to think about that one. Ozzy always was great fun and, unlike many of his contemporaries, still is - though perhaps not in a way he intended. |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: PoppaGator Date: 05 Dec 08 - 12:13 PM I'm a bit too old, and perhaps too American, to have ever been the least bit interested in Black Sabbath. I recognize the name, of course, and have been aware that the band came into prominence a long time ago, and maintained their popularity for quite a long while. They must have been doing something right, whether it was to my personal taste or not. I really knew nothing about Ozzie until the MTV "reality" show, which my kids urged me to watch. I came to enjoy it more than I would have expected. Sharon is obviously the main promoter and "brains of the outfit." Good for her! I cannot understand a thing that comes out of Ozzie's mouth, but then that's normal, right? That's the point of those text-messaging-phone commercials, which are quite amusing. What's a "Brummie"? I assume that refers to a region of England ~ just where is it, what's the major city, etc.? |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Jeri Date: 05 Dec 08 - 12:24 PM Not an Alice Cooper wannabe. Lots of bands (as pointed out) did that black eye makeup and the darkness stuff. I thought Black Sabbath was a more hard-core than Alice Cooper. Music is NOT a competition. Anyway, about the bat-head-biting-off thing, I hear Ozzie in some interview saying it was supposed to be a prop bat [made out of licorice or some such] and when he realized it was a real bat, he was disgusted. Had to get shots and everything. I watched the show once in a while. Rick Fielding told me about it because he liked it. In any case, people don't get hired do commercials because of their musical talent and skill. Mr Whipple and Mr Clean would never have amounted to anything. |
|
Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: olddude Date: 05 Dec 08 - 12:34 PM I would rather listen to Mr. Clean or mr. Whipple squeezing the charmin However I take no offense to anyone who disagrees with my position in anyway. No music isn't a competition it is in the ears, minds and heart of the individual. It presses peoples buttons for some, disgusts others but that is its beauty. Otherwise, we would all be listening to the same tune over and over again. My point it is all marketing. And I know I am crabby this week so I go off on things. Just don't get the appeal. Then again I also detest the cave man insurance commercial that is runs non stop also However Ozzie, I hope he enjoyed a good glass of wine with his bat |

Loved Humble Pie... Loved Cream... And Mountain and Eric Burden and the Animals and the Kinks and Jefferson Airplane... Thane in the late 80's we another round of 3 chorder bands like Tesla, Poison, Metallica, Warrent and the grungies like Mother Love Bone, Stone Temple Pilots, Perfect Circle, Phish, Tonic, etc... Loved 'um all 'cause like Black Sabboth they all had an attitude... So, I'm lovin' the Ozzy-mercials... Thay are a hoot!!! Bobert the HeadBanger |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: olddude Date: 05 Dec 08 - 12:36 PM Well Bobert, with the respect I have for you ... I have now become an Ozzie fan you have converted me :-) |
|
Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Jeri Date: 05 Dec 08 - 01:02 PM Oh sure... you convert for Bobert but not me! I hate the cave men commercials too. I can overlook failures in logic unless the subject matter is too stupid, and those commercials are too stupid. For one thing, cave men were called CAVE MEN because they lived in FLIPPIN' CAVES. You get a corporate 'cave man' living in a nice apartment with nice stuff, flying on airplanes, playing tennis and hanging out in the 21st century version of a fern bar. This is NOT a CAVE man. On top of that, he's not supposed to be lacking in intelligence (and he's got way more STUFF than me anyway) and acts hurt when lower intelligence is referred to, which pretty much proves... well, if it doesn't prove he's not smart, he sure comes off whiny. BUT THEY AREN'T CAVE MEN, PEOPLE! |
|
Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 05 Dec 08 - 01:15 PM Jeri, I think you are making some rather sterotypical assumptions about how caves were decorated. I would imagine that ferns were part of a typical cave back in the good old days and most cave men would want nice things in their caves. I would assume that as soon as the first cave person discovered fire, everyone was decking out their humble abodes with torches. Soon every cave person probably had a set of wheels in the front yard and I would bet even back then that cave men judged people based on the size of their wheel. |
|
Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Jeri Date: 05 Dec 08 - 01:30 PM Yeah, maybe Ron. We were all at the same stage of evolution back then though. Was there some sort of racial purity thing that kept Neanderthals from hooking up with modern-type Paleolithic humans? We're talkin' 'Clan of the Cave Bear' stuff here, and there may be a case for that. Apparently, neanderthals got stoned a lot. So then, how did these insurance commercial 'cave men' manage to live for thousands of years without getting exterminated by the P-men? What? Were they living in caves or something? Did space aliens borrow them for a while? The attitudes of those guys in the commercials could be explained by prolonged, repeat anal probes, so maybe that theory has some merit. On the other hand, I really hate those commercials for making me think about stuff like that. Go Ozzy... |
|
Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 05 Dec 08 - 01:35 PM You know, you might be on to something. I will never look at a cave man exactly the same way in the future. |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: PoppaGator Date: 05 Dec 08 - 02:00 PM Head-banger Bobert: I had pretty much the same taste in rock/pop music as you, up to a certain point in time but no further. I, too, loved Eric Burden and the Animals, Jefferson Airplane, the Kinks, and Cream, but none of the more recent bands you cite (except for Phish ~ I haven't been a real deeply-involved fan, but what I've heard of 'em I've enjoyed). Now, the Grateful Dead, that's something else again entirely. Loved 'em from the first I ever heard of 'em and ever since, right through the various subsequent pop eras that never caught my attention, like punk, glam, metal, etc., etc. ~ more of a taste for mind-blowing than head-banging... |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: PoppaGator Date: 05 Dec 08 - 04:36 PM Yeah You Rite, olddude; I'll see you and raise you: If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come thru the music? Would you hold it near as it were your own? Its a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. And if you choose, to lead must follow, But if you fall you fall alone, If you should stand, then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home. |

Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 05 Dec 08 - 05:53 PM So there we were, sitting in a small country pub, in the wilds of Devon, just off Burgh Island on the South Devon Coast, where the silence was only broken by the distant song of the gulls flying over The Pilchard Inn, across the bay. My brother, Leigh, gets up from the table, where we were sat with Mum and Dad. He disappears into the other bar for a short while, then comes back, sits down and winks at me. I start to get worried, and look around at 'the locals' in their farmer's hats and coats enjoying their pints of local brew... ...when all of a sudden.....at 30,000 decibels, from the small jukebox in the bar next door.............. !!!!!!!!! And everyone froze, apart from Leigh, who spluttered into the bubbles of his Coca-cola, while his horrified parents stared at the seagulls who'd come to investigate the noise..and 'the locals' growled about "they bloody 'emmits and grockles!" I'm still recovering from a Lynard Skynard concert in about 1972...front row, in front of the speakers... Eek! I like those words, Dan. Pretty. HOW does Ozzie put up with Sharon? I can still recall the horror on Seth Lakeman's face when she lunged for him on TV one day, and gave him the biggest smacker of a kiss on the lips. Poor Seth, he was left reeling, for all the wrong reasons. LOL. Apparently, Kelly Osbourne is the Agony Aunt for Radio 1. Oooookkkkkkkkkkay |
