Well, I don't think it would be wrong to merge as many verses as appropriate and then pos them in THIS thread.

I only bumped the thread with my post because I saw on a movie site I was cruising that someone had asked for the name of the song. Sometimes when I'm watching a film or having one play in the background, a question or two will come to my mind and I'l look it up on IMDB or a few other such sites. Inevitably, someone else is also watching while surfing and thinking along the same lines. I posted a link to one of the Digitrad versions on the film site and then figured I'd make a comment here - same as my bump of the "Mary Don't you Weep" thread after hearing it at the end of Deawood last nite.

Hi Dave's Wife - as the song's not mine you're welcome to swipe them. Originally I had only verses 1,2 and 7 which I got from "Black" Stan from Manchester UK - remember him singing it 30+ years ago. I subsequently found the others (with a few word changes) on the net - forget whether I googled it or used Tabrobot - I remember the contributer had a NASA email address!

I just noticed something mildly of interest with regard to Plastic Jesus:

The heavy handed commentary on race relations thinly disguised as a featured film called CRASH, there is a running gag with Larenz Tate's character keeping a plastic Jesus with a magnetic base in his pocket and every time he and Ludacris' character steal a car, he sticks it on the dashbaord. The Plastic Jesus figures prominently in a tragic misunderstanding at the end of the film.

Anyway - in one of those annoying "Music inspired by" pseudo-soundtrack CDs that are all the rage, Billy Idol does a version of Plastic Jesus. I'm gonna have to see if I can get that on iTunes!

Music from and Inspired by Crash

I just recently purchased CHL and have been watching it like crazy. The scene in which Luke finds out his mother has passed and he picks up the banjo is gut-wrenching. I love the song however, I had taken a completely different aspect on the lyrics. Rather than it being a sacreligious spoof, I though it more along the lines of the plastic Jesus was a lost soul's attempt at redemption. Oh well, I'll just keep thinking that to myself. :)

Anyhow, to Dave's Wife, I've been reading these posts for the better part of an hour looking for the complete lyrics. I'm at work and while on smoke break just a few minutes ago, I was downstairs singing the bit from CHL and me and a fellow employee were talking about the movie, which sent us in to talking about another movie and then another.

He asked me if I had ever seen Crash, and I said that I had. And he said that it was crazy how the only good guy was the one to die. And I went woah... the one with the Plastic Jesus! How weird! And then I came back up to my office (yeah, I should be working) and was reading more and saw your post about Crash... It's weird that I had never made that connection. But yeah, I just checked out the Billy Idol version... not bad, but then I LOVE Billy Idol too! :)

Well, I've been coming back to this thread for a few years now. "Plastic Jesus" is one of my favorite scenes of all times. Now the word is that Paul Newman is battling cancer. What a contribution he's made in SO many aspects of his life over the years. Let's hope these are just rumors...

Ed Rush:

I don't know if we ever met, but I was one of a group of young guys who hung around at The Renaissance, Dave Barber's old coffee house on Blackstone Avenue, near downtown Fresno, in the late 1950's and early '60's. I ran into one of the old habitue's, Jon Adams, at a roots festival here in San Diego a couple of years back. I remember going to George's home the night before I was to report for Army induction, on January 19, 1961. His sister had invited me, along with some others, as a sort of official send-off.

I will certainly testify to your joint authorship of "Plastic Jesus." It was a part of local lore. I was amazed when it found its way into a "Sing Out" compilation back then.

I was aware that George, a very creative and talented guy, had passed away, though I had no details. I am glad that you are still alive and well.

The lyrics in the film go as such - (second verse repeated)

I don't care if it rains or freezes
Long as I got my Plastic Jesus
Sittin' on the dashboard of my car
Comes in colours pink and pleasant
Glows in the dark cause its iridescent
Take it with you when you travel far

Get your self a sweet Madonna
Dressed in rhinestones sittin' on a
Pedestal of abalone shells
Goin' 90 I ain't scary
'Cause I got the Virgin Mary
Assuring me that I won't go to Hell
