Subject: Tune Req: Peter From: GUEST,Peter Date: 28 Feb 21 - 11:42 AM Does anyone know if Whitby folk festival is on this year, I have held over tickets from the last 2 years. Booked accommodation in hope. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Feb 21 - 11:49 AM Have you tried Google, Peter? They are usualy up to date. Alternatively, try the WFF web site at https://www.whitbyfolk.co.uk/ |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,Peter Date: 28 Feb 21 - 11:55 AM Thanks found it on Google, fingers crossed hoping for the best. Thank you |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Jeri Date: 28 Feb 21 - 12:17 PM From the website: "We hope very much to be joined by all the artists that had been booked for 2020, please see below, but this will very much depend on where we are with regard to restrictions and venues over the next few months." |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 28 Feb 21 - 03:37 PM On Facebook, they've been saying a decision will be made in April. Derek |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST Date: 28 Feb 21 - 04:59 PM I thought the spa had shut so there is a venue gone |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,Brimbacombe Date: 01 Mar 21 - 04:08 AM The Spa was mothballed, wasn't it? I can't find too much detail on Google about its current status, but the venue has advertisements for events throughout 2021. I don't recall ever reading that it was closed permanently, and this report would seem to suggest that this was never an option: https://www.whitbygazette.co.uk/arts-and-culture/theatre-and-stage/no-plan-permanent-closure-scarborough-spa-and-whitby-pavilion-says-operator-it-consults-redundancies-2906358 (For what it's worth, I think the new Pavilion is a soulless venue, and not a patch on its predecessor. The bar area in particular is like being in an airport waiting lounge.) |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,matt milton Date: 01 Mar 21 - 04:25 AM I was trying to confirm what could (theoretically) happen when according the government's roadmap dates yesterday. It looked like as of 17th May large outdoor events could take place. And indoor events with attendees in clusters of 6 or two households (ie social distancing) And then from June 21st, all restrictions lifted. So theoretically at least, all festivals post 21 June would at least be legal however they were organised. I was looking at the London Folk Festival, which is scheduled to take place in a couple of indoor venues including Cecil Sharp House, between 18th and 20th June. Kind of annoying scheduling as if it were the following weekend it would not require any indoor social distancing measures at all. 'Course all of that is theoretical, in practice they all depend on the success of the previous stage so there could be a domino effect on the dates. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Malcolm Storey Date: 01 Mar 21 - 05:57 AM As grandma used to say "You can wish in one hand and s**t in the other. I know which will get full first" I think, and a lot of people agree with me, that any of the "normal" events we rejoice in will be very difficult to take place this year. There are a hell of a lot of certainties that need to be achieved before people will put their lives at risk - I see no sign of that despite Boris and his un-gallant crew and the efforts of the idiots who believe it is all a myth foisted upon us by the Chinese / Trump / Gaddaffi (he's not really dead you know - just living at the North Pole with Elvis). We are really missing meeting up with friends and doing the normal things but its better than the alternative. Just keep safe and well. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: r.padgett Date: 01 Mar 21 - 06:27 AM Sue Houston has said committee to meet and decide in April (fb) Anything can happen yet Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Mo the caller Date: 01 Mar 21 - 06:37 AM Here's hoping. Highlight of the year. Last year I think there was a fringe (since holiday accommodation was open). I suspect this year with vaccination, more of us will be tempted by that option if all else fails. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby Date: 03 Mar 21 - 07:12 AM Yes Mo, some (just a few though) of my 'crowd' ventured over last year and had an enjoyable time, if socially-distanced. Pubs etc. were open and spontaneous music and song broke out. We were chicken and stayed put but we have accommodation booked for this year in hopes of summat happening. Fingers crossed. 'It'll shine when it shines' as The Ozark Mountain Daredevils sang! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: John MacKenzie Date: 03 Mar 21 - 07:57 AM Well I'm hoping to be able to go, but will be very careful in the venues I visit. I shall still be wearing my face mask when I feel it's appropriate. The only problem I foresee, is suppin' ale, while wearin' t'mask. :) |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Steve Gardham Date: 03 Mar 21 - 07:59 AM Malcolm Never heard that one before. Brilliant! I'm collecting it from you so that makes you a traditional performer now:-) |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Malcolm Storey Date: 03 Mar 21 - 03:40 PM Hi Steve - I presume you mean Grandma's advice! She had several more which included "If you're not in bed by 10 o'clock you might as well come home." |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: JHW Date: 04 Mar 21 - 02:38 PM That's going back a bit, course these days we're not out at 10pm. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST Date: 04 Mar 21 - 05:25 PM Here’s one for you Steve if someone didn’t look very well my mothers was . He s only walking around to save funeral costs |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 04 Mar 21 - 08:00 PM Thinking about Whitby Just been listening to a recording of Brian Dawson (RIP) giving a presentation at Whitby on Percy Grainger collecting in North Lincolnshire in 1905 Brian was talking and singing in 2005. The recording is 1hour 15minutes of gold dust! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,Peter Date: 05 Mar 21 - 02:36 AM We're any singarounds " organised" last year if so where were the venues. Did Cobblers Monday have their session running. We are definitely going this year got accommodation booked it would be nice to know what fringe events are on even if the main event was not. What about the folk train all wearing masks of course. Has anyone tried singing in a mask? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: r.padgett Date: 05 Mar 21 - 03:21 AM Covid scuppered the festival last year Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Raggytash Date: 05 Mar 21 - 06:31 AM Wow! Did it really Ray, who'd have thought it eh? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby Date: 05 Mar 21 - 06:49 AM Fringe events last year? My friends told me there were sessions in the micro pub 'Waiting Room' on the station. I think the 'Elsinore' allowed music too. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Mo the caller Date: 05 Mar 21 - 08:16 AM The committee and artists did a good job last year of the online festival. If they manage to organise even a cut-down festival I shan't be asking for a refund on my rolled-over ticket. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Mo the caller Date: 27 Apr 21 - 05:49 AM Just heard the decision to cancel. How did last years fringe go? being double jabbed I feel a lot more confident about taking part in it this year. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Vic Smith Date: 27 Apr 21 - 06:06 AM This press release received from the Whitby Folk Week Committee: - WHITBY FOLK WEEK 2021: IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE DIRECTORS |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST Date: 27 Apr 21 - 11:07 AM Damn, I went ahead and confirmed my B&B booking thinking that,at worst, they would copy Sidmouth and run a cut down concert based festival. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: r.padgett Date: 28 Apr 21 - 03:25 AM The pubs will be open no doubt Covid rules permitting and hopefully dancing and singing as usual ~ I reckon accommodation will be well full Fingers crossed Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST Date: 28 Apr 21 - 03:42 AM I think any dance "event" will suffer threefold 1) people no longer with us 2) people reluctant to participate 3) a tendency to dance with one partner all night 4) a shift towards partner dances (eg French) 5) an uncertainty in numbers 😎 |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Apr 21 - 11:39 AM Threefold = 1,2,3,4,5! Let me add 6) the fact that the committee (presumably) aren't booking any venues because they've cancelled the festival. I do find it hard to imagine getting back to dancing again. But also hard to imagine not doing so. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Felipa Date: 28 Apr 21 - 02:46 PM I foresee in an upsurge in contactless dancing such as line dancing and step dancing. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Apr 21 - 04:11 PM Well, for those who find that satisfying it has already happened on zoom. But it's not for me. Not what i go dancing for. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Mo the caller Date: 10 Aug 21 - 10:29 AM Any idea what might be going on live in Whitby? I don't fancy sitting in my holiday flat trying to zoom on my phone. I'm sure I saw discussion of a ceilidh on the beach, but Facebook posts are hard to find. Don't particularly want to spend hours trudging round Whitby looking for folkies either. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: cujimmy Date: 10 Aug 21 - 08:21 PM I Will be travelling over from Leeds, I hope to see others |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Steve Gardham Date: 11 Aug 21 - 02:31 PM Ray I'll be there most of the week and I need you to sign some more cheques. Have you got a mobile number I can contact you on when we get there please? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Aug 21 - 06:58 PM I gather, from their Facebook page, that info will be sent out by Steve le Voguier, to those who enjoy taking part in the big Festival Orchestra - on Zoom of course again, as last year. And hoping for some other online sessions too: very much enjoyed Vicki Swan's Swedish tunes last year. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Malcolm Storey Date: 11 Aug 21 - 07:16 PM We will be in Whitby for the week and providing the weather is kind will enjoy just being there during the day. We will probably also make use of the car to re-familiarise ourselves with the delights of the area which we have missed greatly. Evenings will be spent with friends enjoying fine food and drink and hopefully listening to some fine singing and music. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,JHW Date: 12 Aug 21 - 05:56 AM Things happen, things stop. Loads of festivals you can't go to this year because they ceased to be long before covid. (Gone with some of the folks that went to them). Too many to list. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: r.padgett Date: 13 Aug 21 - 12:56 AM Steve Gardham yes Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: r.padgett Date: 14 Aug 21 - 12:24 PM Looking bit bleak pub sessions wise ~ the usual ones it seems are reluctant to allow what we expect ~ well walking could be fun Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,JHW Date: 14 Aug 21 - 03:22 PM Years ago I would walk around Whitby then decide ----it and drive to Edinburgh. Little France campsite flat and ever avaiable and loads on up there. But Campsite built on years ago. Won't want a tent in the hospital AND the A68 doesn't go by anymore. Years before that we used to sing in the Elsinore. Change happens. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: cujimmy Date: 15 Aug 21 - 07:00 AM What about the Fishermans Rowing club, there is loads of room in that top room. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - online From: Felipa Date: 18 Aug 21 - 07:57 PM loads of online Whitby music, song and dance and storytelling 21-27 August see https://www.whitbyfolk.co.uk/ |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Mr Red Date: 19 Aug 21 - 01:55 AM If it is anything like Sidmouth - the usual suspects will congregate to play and dance as best you can on tarmac or grass. One singleton carried a plaque around his neck with "Doubly vaccinated, re-flow tested, willing to dance" The grapevine gave us socially distanced Irish Set (yes it is possible) and a ceilidhs on the front near the Bedford. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: Malcolm Storey Date: 19 Aug 21 - 05:48 AM I may be wrong but I think cujimmy has confused the Fishermens Rowing Club with the Friendship Rowing Club. The Fishermens would certainly not be big enough to allow more than twenty at the most to be sufficiently spaced. The Friendship does have a large concert room upstairs. Also Mr Red, Whitby does not have the number of suitable air freshened areas that Sidmouth has. The Plough yard in the past was a good place to be and Vin Garbutt launched his professional career from there one year. Such a thing would be impossible to do these days as the pub belongs to Sam Smiths and all enjoyment is banned. Even presentations without music such as interviews, things with string, origami and shepherd's stick making were considered too racy - and as for storytelling - well??? |

Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,Rob Mad Jock Wright Date: 19 Aug 21 - 09:55 AM Oops for that last post. Meant to say.... Once overheard at the Whitby Festival many years back relating to The Whitby Hiring Fair "Never have so many travelled so far for so little." |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: GUEST,PeterC Date: 19 Aug 21 - 11:04 AM "Also Mr Red, Whitby does not have the number of suitable air freshened areas that Sidmouth has." Exactly why I normally choose Whitby over Sidmouth. Kept my B&B booking so at least this year I can do all the touristy things without thinking that I am not getting value from my season ticket. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year? From: cujimmy Date: 19 Aug 21 - 04:25 PM Yes Malcomlm I did mean the Friendship Rowing club, their large upper room has been excellent over the years, and there would be plenty of room to space out. Another good venue I think would be the Rugby Club, but it would be a bit of a walk from the town centre. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - Online This Year - 2021 From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Aug 21 - 04:49 PM Did I change the thread title correctly? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - Online This Year - 2021 From: Malcolm Storey Date: 19 Aug 21 - 05:32 PM I'm not sure the Rugby Club would be welcoming to festival goers. But if you want some exercise no doubt they would be happy to sell you a drink. |
