Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: JennyO Date: 26 Jan 11 - 08:47 AM Today we had porridge with brown sugar and creamy milk. Yum! Rob said his mother always cooked it with milk, and I always just cooked it with water (and a pinch of salt) and added the milk when eating it. So we've reached a compromise - cooked it with half milk and half water. BTW I think the pinch of salt is very important for the flavour. When I was in Oz, I sometimes used to have it with soy milk, brown sugar and LSA (ground mixed linseed sunflower and almond) and it was really yummy. I'm not a great lover of soy milk, but it does go well with porridge. As for having breakfast food at other times of the day - I've often been known to have weetbix for a bedtime snack - very satisfying. And for the person who suggested kittens - raw or cooked - I quote my friend Rhymin' Simon here - "I like kittens, but I couldn't eat a whole one!" |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Dorothy Parshall Date: 27 Jan 11 - 03:30 PM Yesterday we had the veggies left from supper. I had left them in the frying pan and seeing there was plenty of liquid, I heated them to bubbling and poached two eggs in there. Totally delicious. Veggies for breakfast have become a habit. I have to make "planned overs". Today, no planned overs so it was a quarter of a two egg omelet and two small pieces of toast with tahini. The omelette had a handful of oregano leaves mixed into the eggs and shredded romano and salsa in the omelet. Sometimes I put in planned over spaghetti sauce. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: JennyO Date: 27 Jan 11 - 04:29 PM Today was more a brunch than a breakfast. It was a bit of a fry-up with bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and - best of all - bubble and squeak made from fried onions mixed in with left-over mashed potato and cabbage - made into a big patty and fried on both sides. Yum!!! We didn't need anything more to eat till dinner tonight! |

Maybe I'll try it sweet tomorrow. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Fastauntie Date: 30 Jan 11 - 07:56 AM Today I'm off to a local cafe for some kind of omelet (with mushrooms if available), maybe one of their bacon-and-cheddar muffins, and definitely a big latte. These days during the work week it's usually a Clif bar, Luna bar, or something similar, no prep required and I can eat it while dressing, then a cup of coffee when I get to the office. I like my oatmeal with salt and butter, and have it for dinner as often as for breakfast. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Slag Date: 30 Jan 11 - 07:08 PM Well, this is mundane to me but looking at what you all eat, hey! Maybe it's exotic. 3 eggs (brown, free-range) soft scrambled, one medium brown Russet potato from Idaho hashed and well browned on both sides, Potter's Hot Sausage from Oklahoma, 3 slices of soft white bread, toasted and slathered with butter, strawberry perserves, piping hot dark French roast Italian 100% Arabica coffee (Peerless). And I know what many of you are thinking right now but you'd be wrong. Maybe once a week if I'm lucky. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Rapparee Date: 30 Jan 11 - 08:09 PM Everclear and corn flakes, breakfast of champions. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Jeri Date: 30 Jan 11 - 08:26 PM You shouldn't drink Everclear with corn flakes. It might go with Fruit Loops, but corn flakes should be paired with a nice bourbon, oat meal with a good breakfast single malt would be very Scottish, and rum goes with well with Cocoa Puffs. I've been pretty healthy with all the grainy cereal and apples, but this morning, I got to the potato chips first, and then had a cheese omelet for dinner. I guess it was a backwards sort of day. Must go back to the Red River tomorrow. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 31 Jan 11 - 03:16 PM ...or perhaps you mean my coffee with a beer-like head on it - got by pouring from a dizzy height. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 31 Jan 11 - 03:22 PM That would be it. My coffee never has a spoon in it, which is why I didn't recognise it. Why do you pour it from a great height? Doesn't that make it go cold too quickly? Or is it that you are preparing your breakfast on the floor or a low coffee table and you can't be bothered to bend down? |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 31 Jan 11 - 03:41 PM I like to get an extra stir, and froth, by pouring from a height into the (pre-stirred) instant coffee, sugar and soya mix; and then to re-stir as I sip down my cup of coffee (or tea). |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 31 Jan 11 - 07:13 PM Pouring from a height adds air into the brew - a big thing in some parts of the world when serving tea - the more foam, the better. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 01 Feb 11 - 09:11 AM ...great heights/great minds..! And, without tongue twisting, does anyone ever tip their toast over as, apparently, taste buds are atop our tongues? |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 01 Feb 11 - 10:01 AM My dad used to ask me if i wanted a high poured or a low poured cup of tea and I thought he was joking but it did taste better. Unfortunately not many people use teapots these days. Talking of rituals with toast I leave the top crusted half until last and it has to be buttered up to the edge and if I have jam or marmalade it can only be spread to just a bit below the buttered crust. Strange but true. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 01 Feb 11 - 10:14 AM Not strange at all, Patsy, I always eat the top crust last, with plenty of butter right up to the edge. And it's always real butter. And I always make tea in a teapot. I was once astonished to watch someone making tea for six people in the kitchen attached to a hall (while we were setting up for a dance). He lined up six mugs and, ignoring the large teapot on the shelf, put a teabag in every cup. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 01 Feb 11 - 10:16 AM And I usually use loose tealeaves, not bags. |
