Electric Voices, the South West Surrey based folk organisation run by Lawrence Heath (which arranges concerts in Guildford,Cranleigh and Farnham, the Godalming Borough Hall ceilidhs, and the Music Institute Club in Guildford amongst other things!) celebrates its 10th anniversary with a special concert on Friday 22 June 2007 at the Electric Theatre in Guildford.

John Spiers and Jon Boden (who helped Electric Voices to celebrate the first night of opening of the Music Institute Club in Guildford in September 2005,have appeared at Cranleigh Arts Centre, and with Eliza Carthy and Ben Ivitsky, and also with the first lineup of Bellowhead, at the Electric Theatre) will be making their first appearance at the theatre as a duo.

There are still a few tickets left for this concert - so if you feel like coming along to help us celebrate our 10th birthday, please give the theatre's box office a ring on 01483 444789. Tickets cost £11 if bought in advance, or £12.50 on the day, and the concert starts at 8 pm.

Can't guarantee that there will be cake, but hope to see you there!

What a wonderful evening you'll have, just wish we could come along to our 'local' concert venue, but we're away at a Song & Ale so will have to miss.

16 bars?

That would depend on a number of factors, not least whether the sailor was brisk or stout, whether the version was collected by C# in West Harptree, Somerset, by Baring Gould in Widdecombe, Devon, or whether you were listening to Chris Willett on VOP, We've Got Orders To Sail, and possibly even whether it was being played in G or C.

Rambling Sailor/Trim Rigged Doxy

Whatever.

I think it's about average to take 10 bars to assess what's going on musically and another 5 to know whether it's going to work. That's what I did 5 years ago when I first heard Jon'n'John and the same process was going on among those around me at that tiny venue (Islington F*lk Club, as it goes).

This depended, of course, upon our being able to count bars in the first place.

When madlizzie first heard of them last week she doubtless took 'other factors' into consideration.

Not clever, not funny.

John Spiers & Jon Boden are serious musicians who, against the odds, are successful. This is a Good Thing. They care passionately about what they are doing.

And so do I.

Go to the Electric Theatre. It's a brilliant venue (thanks Lawrence).
OK, you've got to sit down, which is difficult. But it's tiered and you can see.

Your ears either go WOW! or they don't! Don't you go giving me any of this scientific musical business thanks very much and...I found them before you did too...it's just always got up your nose!

So there! ;0)

And they may be serious musicians, but they've got a darn good sense of humour on stage...Your words make them sound rather 'stuffy' which they ain't..

Lizzie.
Please Stop.
Please.
Virtually everybody here knows exactly who John and Jon are.
We also understand the journey that they've made to get where they are today. To their great credit.
Saccharine Fandom does them (and all the others you keep banging on about) a huge disservice.
Unlike the BBC message board, Mudcat is populated by (Mainly!) very intelligent and knowledgable people.
This is not the place for you, I'm afraid.
I applaud your enthusiasm, but, quite honestly, this is not the place to voice it.
Yes, yes, you'll shout and scream about your rights to say what you like.......Fine.
Only problem is, is that you are preaching to the converted, most of whom had already discovered what to you is a "New Thing", many years ago..... (or even longer than that)

We all know where the websites/youtube/whatever stuff, that you refer to exists.
We all know how to navigate the Web.
No need to keep posting links. Please stop it.

Finally, I don't particularly like SOH. They're OK, but it doesn't do it for me. Sorry. And the more you bang on about them, the more people will shy away. (Including the band, by all accounts)

I will be in Sidmouth. Housewives Choice. Sunday Anchor Gardens. why not pop by???
Doubt if you'll let me buy you a Tizer, but it's worth a try.

Ralph

Lizzie

I just give up. You just don't understand the potential damage that you can inflict to the people that you purport to admire.
I feel desperately sad for any artist that comes into your gunsight.
I'm so glad that I am now "persona non grata."

So, reckon the Tizer at Sidmouth is out of the question then?

Lizzie. Maybe the fantasy of emigrating to Canada was your best option.
Shame it was only a fantasy.

From Ralph Jordan:

>>>You just don't understand the potential damage that you can inflict to the people that you purport to admire.
I feel desperately sad for any artist that comes into your gunsight.<<<

No, I don't understand, because you're 'Talking Through Your Tizer' I'm afraid.

Don't feel sad, not at all.

Here, here's a very happy memory of some gorgeous Folkie Lasses from last year's Sidmouth Folk Week, just outside The Anchor. Gillie and Bry from The Witches of Elswick, the photo is from their Myspace page if you want to check. I'd put a link in, but as you say above, you can find it yourself. Just put 'myspace' after their name, in case you've forgotten then look in the 'pics' bit.

The picture was taken by dear Jim Causley who had just given me one of the BIGGEST hugs bless him! He's a Champion Hugger, the Best in The West you know!

Two Lovely Young Folkie Lasses and an Ol' Folkie Bird..

The only one who is doing any damage here Ralph is YOU.

And the damage you are doing is not to me, nor to any artist. You are doing it to yourself and your reputation.

This world is MY world too Ralph. You will never break me, nor silence me, nor 'tame' me to become like you, so the sooner you begin to realise that the better..

NEVER AGAIN.

For this is MY world too.

Get used to it and let whatever is causing your bitterness be put elsewhere, far away from me.

Thank you

Lizzie

Good Grief.
I should have known better after all this time.
OK.
One last time.
Over the years you have fawned over many many artists (No, I'm not going to mention names, we all know who)

I'm very glad that I don't feature on your Christmas card list. I was getting scared at one point, when you decided that PJD were worth something.
Well, let me tell you one thing, young lady.
The artists that you espouse to champion, are very hard working, and on the whole, very badly paid. And to a man (or girl) they get very angry at the mention of your name.
I commend your enthusiasm, but, you have to realise that these fora are not the place to post such things.
We all know about these artists, and we will like them (or not) as we see fit.
All you are doing is alienating potential fans, by this huge splurge of soapy, sweet, .......nothing.
It's not big and it's not clever.
You talk about your world.
Well, please go back to it, and let us poor musicians (who are actually making music, unlike you), inhabit our world, and stop preventing us from earning a living, because that is what you are doing.
Which part of the above paragraphs don't you understand?

madlizzie, harassing and trivialising artists again.
Yes, they said.
Embarrassing.
There's a word for so-called fans who behave like this.
It's not nice.
But then, it needs to be bad, to encompass such appalling behaviour.
No wonder Canada wouldn't let her in.
Our misfortune.

Ralphie, I don't want to go anywhere near the musicians Lizzie fawns over, but I'm not too fond of anybody you and the rest of the pack of Lizzie-chasing pack of hounds talk about either. It all has to do with me being reminded of your crusades in here and realizing NONE of you knows when to stop.

With great respect.
Jeri is right.
I shouldn't go off on one with respect of something as pointless as the inane rants of Lizzie.
And I'm assuming that Jeri is referring to the CM saga (No, lets not start that one again)
I'm just a principled chap, Jeri Old Bean.
I just don't like to see injustice.
I also don't like to see sycophantic and career damaging rants from a certain ex inhabitant of Pinner.

Interestingly, quite a few of the artists that Lizzie has championed have stayed overnight in my house after a gig. And I consider them to be good and loyal friends.

This has led to some very interesting conversations over the cheese and biscuits.
I'll leave you to ponder on the subjects under discussion.
But, Jeri. Many apologies again.
Can we all go to sleep now?

All along and down a lea
And Bold Sir Rylas the wild woman fell on
Down by the river side
And he split her head down to her chin
You should have seen her kick and grin
Down in the grove where the wild flowers grow
And the green leaves fall all around

Good grief - I go off to sing at the Festival Hall (and I might add to open for Motorhead - traditional or what??), and come back to find all this!

Could I perhaps revert to the REAL point of this thread - to let people know that Electric Voices are celebrating 10 years of very worthwhile existence?? The concert should be a fitting tribute to the hard work of Lawrence Heath in promoting excellent and worthwhile music and dance in South West Surrey over the last 10 years - it is a BIRTHDAY celebration (and yes, there WILL be cake for all who come to the concert - special cakes with "Electric Voices" emblazoned on them) which Jon and John will be helping to promote - and hopefully we will all, as usual, have a thoroughly enjoyable time with them. SO instead of squabbling over who said what and when could I suggest that if you live round this way (ie Guildford) you consider buying a ticket and coming along and joining us and see them in action.

The Electric Theatre - from which Electric Voices takes its name - is indeed a great little venue - no dancing tis true, but intimate with good sight lines throughout, and much loved by all the artistes who have appeared there.

Could we now put a sock in all this irrelevant argey-bargey, and a cover over the parrot's cage and say goodnight and put all this to rest ?

I haven't come into this but it is virtually impossible (although I manage generally) to ignore Lizzie since she hijacks threads like this and makes it very difficult for people who may want to actually find out about the gig at Guildford but have to plough through all that nonsense of hers.

And it's not just this thread.

Mudcat can be like a group of friends having an intelligent, fun and sometimes acrimonious but that's the way with friends, discussion in the pub and somebody come in and spews up on the table.

That can be difficult to ignore, especially when the spewer has no concept of the effect of their actions.

Needed saying (probably a waste of time) will go back to ignoring and will not respond further.

I hope you sell the gig out. Those guys deserve everything they get.

I'm contrary and the more hype John and Jon were getting the more determined I was not to see them. I saw them in Lewes two weeks ago and was very impressed indeed. The passion, expression and delight that these two pack into everything from a simple morris tune to a gruesome ballad is very moving.

Moreover, they are two very down to earth blokes trying to make a living doing what they love with no ego and no edge.

I wish I could get to Guildford next Friday to see them again but will wait for broadstairs and bellowhead in august.

Jon B sang unaccompanied at the EFDSS event at Cecil Sharp House last Monday night - a reminder, if ever one was needed, of how powerful and compelling his voice is.

Spiers and Boden are one of the few bands I can listen to over and over again. Their arrangements are always fresh and exciting. Truly great music which manages to be both contemporary and traditional.

Enjoy the gig, everyone who's going - I look forward to visiting the club sometime in the not too distant future!

Can I hijack this thread for a minute to ask if anything folk(ish) happens in Guildford on a Tuesday night, because I'm going to be staying there for one night this week?

Its a pity my visit doesn't coincide with Jon and John's concert. That would have been a major stroke of luck, because I've seen them a number of times and I really enjoy their music and their entertainment value.

Is there anything happening this coming Tuesday in the area that would be worth checking out?

Hi Declan
Just saw your posting - re this, regrettably, to the best of my knowledge, there isn't anything folk(ish) happening in the vicinity of Guildford on a Tuesday (there are sessions in Godalming, just a few miles away on Mondays and Wednesdays and a club in Byfleet on Thursdays, but I can't think of anything around here on a Tuesday.) I'm sure that one or another of the regulars in this place might be able to put me right on that if I've missed anything. Sorry you won't be able to make it on Friday. You could try having a look at the Links section of the Electric Voices website which you can find here
Look for the reference to the "all-singing, all-dancing links" page - you never know it might lead you to something helpful.

Should you return to Guildford at a later date, the club meets in the middle of the town twice a month on Friday nights; Electric Voices fixtures at the Electric Theatre tend to be at weekends, as are the ones at Cranleigh Arts centre .

Ruth - definitely agree with all you say. That was an interesting night altogether ... as to John and Jon, for me the thing that always shines forth is their absolute enjoyment of and involvement in what they are doing, which, of course, spills out and transmits itself to their audience - it's always a wonderful evening of shared experience. If you're talking about coming to the Music Institute club, we'll look forward to seeing you I have no doubt (another victim for my raffle ticket selling skills??) - I would say bring some cinnamon vodka with you, but suspect that might not be feasible!!
